Facilitator’s Guide G10 ~ English Home Language: Language

PREFACE Dear facilitator, Welcome to the Grade 10 course for English Home Language. When learners are in Grade 12, it is expected of them to know all the technical work (literary terms, language) and skills that were studied from Grade 8. For this reason, it is suggested that learners keep a summary book up to the end of Grade 12. They can make their own summaries and notes in it. It is important that leaners practise comprehension and interpretative skills, as well as writing skills. Do not regard the answers in the facilitator’s guide as the only ones that are correct. As long as any point made is substantiated from the text, it may be accepted. Encourage learners to read as widely as possible and make their own comments on any questions raised in the articles that they read. They must also be able to recognise any techniques that are used in a text to achieve a certain effect. Use the questions and answers in this course as an example. PORTFOLIO WORK All the portfolio tasks for Grade 10 can be found in the portfolio book with complete instructions. Make sure that it is done neatly, and that learners keep it in a file until the end of Grade 12. Do not send in any portfolio work, unless you are asked to do so. TESTS AND EXAMINATIONS Learners are expected to know all the theory of work that was done since the beginning of the year. Since it is not possible to repeat everything each year, the notes in the summary book are very important for the following years. Learners will need these as a quick reference for future exercises and tests. At the end of terms 2 and 4 learners will write full examinations. Paper 1

The man who was injured had to be rushed to hospital. If a boy likes a girl he will tell her. May I please have an apple? He is a famous lawyer. It is a universal truth that people want to be respected. I hope to study at a university one day. It is an honour to meet you, Mr President. I have but an hour to speak with you. The truth of the matter is that he committed the murder. It is simply one of the best films I have ever seen. It is the story of a rich man who falls in love with a poor girl. My brother graduated from the University of Pretoria in 1996. In the past, one had to go all the way to the post office to post a letter. Mozart was a musical genius! He is a true gentleman.

Activity 2: MEMORANDUM 1.

Never assume to know the dress code solely by the tone of the occasion or the invitation. I did this recently, and a lack of thorough research and my “No, it’ll be fine” approach backfired on me in a most spectacular manner. The event was the 25th anniversary performance (“Two Nights Only!” said the invitation) of Old Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert hall in London. Before I continue with my story, I must point out – for the sake of what’s left of my repute – that I in no way like musicals. Watching people dance merrily with floor mops and sing instead of talk makes me blush frantically.

The men must’ve been very hungry since they ate all the food. The girl neglected to complete her essay. The boy forgot his jacket at his friend’s house. My mother and I are very alike; we both enjoy going to the cinema. One must never forget one’s manners. The teacher shouted at the learner: “You should listen when I speak!” Whose book is this? The boys lied to their parents. Who ate the last piece of chocolate cake? You have no one but yourself to be angry with; it’s all your fault!

3.

Learners’ sentences should reflect a clear understanding of the different adjectives. Furthermore, the sentence should be grammatically correct.
