UNIT 10: Words, phrases and clauses ACTIVITY 10

10.1 a. b. c. d. e.

This film is set apart through a degree of quirkiness and black humour. Gene Hackman plays a selfish father who returns to his children after an absence of 20 years. With the assistance of a voice coach, Johnny Depp is convincing as a Cockney police inspector. (The phrase can also be added at the end.) Barry Levinson scores another hit with this highly entertaining movie. It is a riveting film, despite the ludicrously litter-free London streets. (The phrase can also be put in front.) (5)

10.3 a. b. c. d. e.

The scene with the extras was shot against the sun which/that was setting. The hero stared at his friend who disappeared under the water. The crew battled to stop the camera which/that toppled from the scaffold. The director shouted at the public who tried to get close to the actor. We watched the last scene which/that was filmed first. (5)

After directing seven retakes, the director was exhausted. Before acting the important scene, the actor said a little prayer. The posse rode out to meet the stagecoach carrying the gold dust. Sending out signals, the starship approached the new planet carefully. Since speaking to the people on earth the captain has not used the intercom once. Two possible endings to the film were first discussed before filming. After completing the final scene, the camera crew and actors had a party. Having devoted a lifetime to the cinema, the actor looks forward to the day when he receives an Oscar for his achievements. Providing strong backing for the film by finding a sponsor, the producer feels entitled to a say in the choice of the main lead. OR By finding a sponsor and providing strong backing for the film, the producer feels entitled to a say in the choice of the main lead. Needing money desperately, the actor made a play for the main role. (10)

UNIT 11: The manipulative word This whole exercise is to point out how the consumer is manipulated through advertising. Please assist the learners in the discussions and analyses required in the different activities. It should make them understand that no one can avoid this exploitation and that we are all “victims” of the ideas depicted in the media. • • • • • • • •

Consumer: a person who pays for products and services Commodity: an item that can be sold or exchanged for money Persuade: to convince a person to do something Persuasion: the noun used to refer to the ability to convince a person Luxury: an item which is not necessarily needed, but wanted Luxurious: having qualities of being an item of superior value to ordinary items Exploit: use something or someone more than the person or object wants to be used or can be used Exploitation: the act of using someone or something more than it should be

Using a pun: 1. Renoir was a famous painter who painted using oil-based paints, because these give a better quality picture. The advertisement implies that olive oil also gives food a better quality taste. 2. The advertisement plays on the word “pot”. It implies that a good pot of tea is just as uplifting as drugs, but it is legal and healthy. “Pot” refers to the slang used for cannabis.

ACTIVITY 11 Unit 11 has no measurable activity.
