Dr Hudson’s bad-tempered patient Today Maria is taking her child to see the doctor. She dresses Annie in her pretty blue dress. Dr Hudson’s consulting room is next to their house under the biggest tree in the garden. Dr Hudson is working very hard. Maria and Annie sit on a stone, waiting. The smart lady coughs once, but Dr Hudson is very busy! He doesn’t even look up. Maria wonders if he can hear her. Maybe he is deaf ! But he does have two ears. Whenever Annie pretends not to hear, Maria always asks if the two objects on the sides of her head are ornaments. Now Maria coughs very loudly. Dr Hudson jumps up. He runs to Maria and slaps her on the back. “Oh dear, I think your lungs are finished, Madam. Put out your tongue!” “No, Doctor! I will not!” says Maria firmly. “It is bad manners to stick out your tongue at someone. A tongue’s only work is to lick and to taste!” Dr Hudson shakes his head. He looks into Maria’s ears. “Hm! These ears have not been washed properly. How are they supposed to hear when I speak to you?” he asks. He puts a little brown mud into a spoon. He holds the mud medicine very still so that the patient can drink it. “Oh sis, ugh! Take it away from my nose, it smells bad!” yells Maria. She jumps up and hits out at Dr Hudson.

“Hm, I see there is nothing wrong with the arms and hands. The arms can swing and the hands can slap and the fingers can still hold the doll, too,” Dr Hudson says. Now Maria is so angry that she tries to kick Dr Hudson. “It is not a doll, it is my sick child, Annie! She is the patient, not I!” Dr Hudson jumps backwards. “Hm, I see there is nothing wrong with the legs, either. They can swing and kick. What a pity your feet are bare and your toes dirty,” Dr Hudson says. Maria grabs her sick child and plants herself in front of Dr Hudson. “You are a bad doctor. You can’t even see who the patient is. I am going home!” she says. “Don’t fret, Annie, my poor sick child, I will give you medicine myself. Open your mouth wide and swallow once. Then lick your lips if it was nice.” Dr Hudson sighs and sits down next to his tomato box table. “Oh dear, a doctor has a difficult life with such bad-tempered patients.”
