Facilitator’s Guide Grade 2 ~ English Home Language

Introduction for the facilitator Impaq’s approach to language teaching in the Foundation Phase Language is an instrument for thinking and communication. The effective use of language enables learners to think and gain knowledge, be creative, develop their own identity, as well as express their feelings and ideas when interacting with others. Learners’ home language forms an important foundation and becomes the instrument for communication and learning. Effective language teaching and learning require the development and creation of learning opportunities and interactions that focus on the development of learners’ ability to listen, speak, think, argue, read and write. This learning programme comprises 20 learning units that stretch over the 40 weeks of the academic year. Each learning unit consists of 10 days spread over two weeks. Each day offers 3 or 4 detailed language sessions on these aspects: • Listening and speaking, • Reading and phonics, • Writing and handwriting.

Listening and speaking Listening and speaking form an integral part of all other learning areas. Specific sessions are dedicated to focused activities to help develop listening and speaking skills. The listening- and speaking activities are designed to improve learners’ vocabulary and language structure. As facilitator, you should use all possible opportunities to have a conversation with your learners. If a learner does not engage in spontaneous conversation, you may start a conversation by asking questions, using picture discussions and/or storytelling. The listening and speaking activities include conversations about specific topics, picture discussions, introductions to new stories, as well as discussions after each story from the reading series. The Grade 2 Home Language programme offers focused listening- and speaking sessions, which are often integrated with reading or writing sessions. It is your responsibility to integrate listening and speaking with other learning areas. Integrated listening and speaking activities help to develop critical thinking, self-expression, and listening and speaking while engaged in learning activities within each learning area.

Reading Reading proficiency is an important component of this programme. The year plan is based on the reading series: The adventures of Ben, Lebo and Hanna, which consists of Phases 5 - 8. Each phase includes six stories. As the year progresses, it is assumed that learners’ reading proficiency develops, which means that the vocabulary and text in the readers become incrementally longer and more challenging. The programme is developed to promote word recognition and language structure. Learners regularly read high frequency words to improve their reading proficiency. As learners’ reading proficiency improves, time dedicated to high frequency words is reduced. You introduce learners

to sight words to prepare them for the reading lesson and use flash cards from the learning aids to introduce new words. These flash cards promote word recognition and help to develop learners’ reading proficiency. The learning programme provides for individual reading, as well as shared reading when you read with them and introduce new words. Learners will know the words by the time they have to read the text. However, there will be sessions, during which a learner is expected to read unseen texts.

Phonics Every learning unit includes a range of phonics activities that alternate between the introduction of new sounds and digraphs, word-building and spelling. The various phonics sessions are spread over the 20 learning units. Learners revise all the single sounds (vowels and consonants) and digraphs learnt in Grade 1. Learners are introduced to new digraphs and more complex sound combinations. The programme is designed to introduce learners to new sounds, but to also provide for consolidation. In addition to the phonic activities, learners complete a weekly writing activity where they are required to spell and write familiar words.

Handwriting This learning programme provides for the systematic mastering of handwriting skills. Learners revise patterns that develop their handwriting and is introduced to new patterns in preparation for cursive writing. They learn the correct shapes of the letters (capital and small letters) and practise continuously during the phonics and writing activities.

Writing Writing activities focus on learners’ ability to write text, while handwriting focuses on the skill of forming letters. Writing activities are initially very simple and learners use single words to complete sentences. As the programme progresses, learners are challenged to write sentences, plan and write stories, read with comprehension and answer questions. The Grade 2 Home Language programme introduces learners to basic rules of grammar, the use of nouns and verbs in sentences, punctuation and creates awareness of past, present and future tense in language and written text.

Materials and learning aids Grade 2 learners use pencils for all written activities. These activities are done in two Workbooks, i.e. Workbook 1 - Handwriting and Phonics, and Workbook 2 - Writing. In addition, learners need two blank books (an exercise book and one for work done in class, please use books with Irish lines and margins) for creative writing, writing exercises and spelling tests.

Facilitator’s Guide Grade 2 ~ English Home Language

Learning unit Day 1

1 Week 1

Session 1: Listening, speaking and reading - “Have you seen my glasses?” This is a combined reading, listening and speaking session. Depending on the stage of each story in the reading series, the listening and speaking sessions are integrated with the reading sessions. At the end of each new story, there is a listening and speaking session as well. During this session learners are introduced to the new story, or at the end of each story learners talk about the story and answer questions and/or draw conclusions.

• • • • • • • • • • •

Discuss the title and the picture on the front page of the story “Have you seen my glasses?” Read the title of the story to learners. Read the title again; learners read the title with you. Discuss the use of the question mark at the end of the title: Look at the punctuation mark at the end of the title. Which punctuation mark can we see? (Question mark) Why is there a question mark? When do we use question marks? Learners formulate questions. Emphasise the difference between a question and a statement (a normal sentence). Let’s look at the picture on the front page of the story. (cf. Reading Series, Grade 2, Phase 5, p. 7) Where are Ben and Carin? (In a bedroom.) Why do you say they are in a bedroom? (Learners identify the furniture and say that’s why they are in a bedroom). What is Ben doing? Wat is Carin doing? What are the friends looking for? What makes you think that? (The friends are looking for glasses because the title of the story is “Have you seen my glasses?”). Let’s start reading this week’s story to find out what happens with Ben and Carin.

The reading sessions provide for independent and group reading (Reading with the facilitator or a friend). Facilitate each reading lesson and use the sight words as indicated to introduce learners to new and/or unfamiliar words. In addition to the sight words, learners read high frequency words, e.g. they, the, is, am, are, it, etc. These are familiar words found in almost all texts. Learners are required to read high frequency words to improve their reading proficiency. If they find it difficult to read a word, they can try to sound and read the word, before you sound and read the word. • Flash the high frequency words to learners. Session 2: Phonics • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

In Grade 1, learners learnt most of the single sounds and a few digraphs. All the familiar sounds are revised during the first term. Tell the following story: Coco is a cat. The cat climbs into the cot. Ask the following questions to facilitate the phonics lesson: Coco is an animal. Which animal is Coco? What did Coco do? Listen to the story again and try to recall all the words that start with ‘c’. Allow learners to name all the words that start with ‘c’. Read the following sentences. Learners listen and clap their hands when they hear the ‘c’ sound: Coco can climb into the cot. Candice eats candy and claps her hands. Can you clap your hands? The cock crows in the cage. Can you remember what the ‘c’ sound looks like? Flash the ‘c’ sound to learners. Emphasise the shape of the letter ‘c’. Flash the ‘c’ words from the learning resources to learners. They read the words to you. Flash the words to the learners again. They sound each word and read it to you. Make a sentence with the word. E.g. cat - The cat sits on the mat. cock - The cock crows. cut Dad cuts the meat with a knife, etc. Words for the sound activity: cat, can, cut, cot, cup

Day 2

Session 1: Listening and speaking

• • • • • • • •

It is the beginning of the year and learners have started a new school year. Have a discussion about the December holiday. Use questions to help learners who do not talk spontaneously. Everyone had fun during the holiday. Were you at home during the holiday or did you go away to family, friends or a holiday destination? Use the learners’ frames of reference and formulate questions according to their discussion, e.g.: Where did you go during the holiday? Who went with you? Did you enjoy the holiday? Why? What did you do during the holiday? Are you looking forward to the new year? What does it mean to ‘look forward to’ something? Why are you excited about the new year? Have a conversation of about 10 minutes where learners talk about their holidays. Pay attention to their vocabulary and use of complete sentences.

Session 2: Phonics • • • • •

Yesterday, learners read and sounded words with the ‘c’ sound. Let’s think of a few words that start with ‘c’. Learners name words that start with ‘c’. Today, we listen to another sound. Listen to the story and see if you can recognise today’s sound. Ted the tiger is tired. He is too tired to tiptoe to the tree. Ted is an animal. Which animal is Ted? What is wrong with Ted? Listen to the story again and try to recall all the words that start with ‘t’.

Learners are reading the story “Have you seen my glasses?” In today’s session, they will read that Ben and Carin are visiting Grandpa and Granny on the farm. Use the events in the story as starting point and begin a conversation. This session follows on the reading session. Ben and Carin are visiting Grandpa and Granny. Where do Grandpa and Granny live? (On a farm). Do you know someone who lives on a farm? Have you ever been on a farm? What do people do who live on a farm? (They farm with livestock or plant crops. Learners may explain in their own words.) Where does your grandpa and/or granny live? If learners no longer have a grandpa or granny, you may refer to any other person close to them. Do you visit your grandpa and/or granny often? What do you like to do when you visit them? Do you enjoy visiting your grandpa and/or granny? Why is it fun? Talk about the emotions children experience when they visit Grandpa and/or Granny. How does it feel when something is fun? How does it make you feel?

Day 5 Session 1: Writing familiar words • • • • • • •

© Impaq

This week, learners revised various sounds and built words. Learners are required to write these words in an exercise book with the correct spelling. Revise the sounds of the week before they write the words. Flash these sounds to the learners a few times: c, a and t. Shuffle the sequence of the sounds while you flash them. Explain to learners that they will write familiar sounds in their exercise book. Write the date at the top of the page. You may write the date on the board for learners to copy. Learners must listen to each word you say and write it in pencil in their exercise books. Read each word slowly and clearly. Learners write the word. If learners find it difficult to spell and write the word, they can sound and read it instead. Once they have managed to sound the word, they can write it in their exercise books. 22

and sounds of the story to write their sentences, e.g. This is my Granny. She has a red dress. Note the use of punctuation and capitalisation, as learners are already aware of the full stop at the end of a sentence and the capital letter at the beginning of a sentence. You may emphasise the capital letter during this activity.

Learners complete Activity 2 in Workbook 2. They must write two sentences to tell you about their grandpa and/or granny. Remember that a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.

Day 6

Week 2

Session 1: Listening and speaking • • • • • • • • • • •

Start a conversation about emotions. Refer to the reading series: “Have you seen my glasses?” Ask learners to read the sentences on page 8 of the story. Refer to the emotions that Ben and Carin experience: They love Grandpa and Granny, and they have fun on the farm. When do we say that something is fun? How do you feel when you are having fun? Ben and Carin love Grandpa and Granny. What does it feel like to love someone? Learners explain in their own words what it means to love something or someone. How do you behave towards someone you love? (When we love someone we treat him/her with respect, do fun things together, listen when he/she speaks, etc. Learners discuss what it means to love someone.) What do you like doing for your mom/dad/brother/sister because you love them? Even when we love someone, we sometimes argue with them or have different opinions. How do we feel when someone does something we don’t like? (Upset or even angry). How does it feel to be angry? When have you been angry with someone in your family? Have you ever been unhappy about something your mom/dad/brother/sister did? What did he/ she do and why were you upset? What did you do to solve the problem so that everyone could be happy again? Use additional questions to keep the coversation flowing. Pay attention to learners’ vocabulary, sentence construction and use of full sentences.
