Robbie is lying on his bed. He is reading a magazine about skateboarding. He wants to be a super skateboarder, just like Tony Hawk. He reads that the ±rst skateboarders were surfers in California, many years ago. They wanted something to do when the waves were ¶at and they couldn’t surf. Robbie falls asleep. In his dreams, he does a back¶ip while people clap and cheer.

The next morning, Robbie knows what to do. I will go to the skatepark and watch the skaters. I’m sure I can learn a few things, he thinks. “Good morning,” says Mom. “Morning, Mom, I have to go to the skatepark. It’s very important research,” Robbie says in a hurry. Mom smiles. She knows Robbie loves skateboarding. “All right, you may go, but take a slice of toast to eat on the way.” Robbie grabs his backpack and a slice of toast and sets off for the skatepark. 9

The skatepark is very busy. Everywhere skaters are doing tricks. Robbie watches one doing an ollie, an easy trick if you practise enough. I wonder whether I can do that, he thinks. Just then, a skater speeds down the half-pipe and does a perfect backÂśip. When he lands, everyone cheers. 10
