PREFACE PRESCRIBED BOOKS All texts required this year are either in the facilitator’s guide or in the study guide. INTRODUCTION The facilitator’s guide is divided into four units and 18 lessons. Each lesson is taught over two weeks. Units 1 and 3 have five themed lessons each, and Units 2 and 4 have four themed lessons each. At the end of Units 2 and 4, learners write examinations. (Please see Assessment Requirements for further details about the examinations and assessments.) At the beginning of each lesson is a skills table that reflects the relevant activity in both the study guide and the facilitator’s guide. Each lesson has four sections: Listening and Speaking, Reading and Viewing, Writing and Presenting, and Language Structures and Conventions. Each section contains activities. Each activity is labelled, with a corresponding activity to the study guide. Each activity has a time reference. (Please see Timetable and Time Management for further details about the lesson and activity times.) At the end of each lesson there are remedial and extension activities for learners to complete if time allows. These may also be used as preparation for examinations.

TIMETABLE AND TIME MANAGEMENT Allocate time for Grade 5 English Home Language as set out below for each two-week lesson: • Listening and Speaking – two hours • Reading and Viewing – five hours • Writing and Presenting – two hours • Language Structures and Conventions – one hour Each activity in this book has been developed to meet these times. Aim to account for eight lessons per week; i.e. 16 lessons per two-week schedule. EACH WEEK your timetable should include: • 2 x 30-minute listening and speaking activities • 1 x 30-minute reading and viewing activity • 2 x one-hour reading and viewing activities • 2 x one-hour writing and presenting activities • 1 x 30-minute language structures and conventions activity

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS Assessment forms a large part of this guide. Each unit has two assessment task requirements that each total 100. Each unit contains activities that form part of the formal assessment. Refer to the portfolio book for all formal assessment tasks. STUDY TIPS AND METHODS 1.

Make a study plan. Study over the course of a week, do not leave it until the night before the test or examination. Revisiting the information moves it from short-term memory (the type that disappears almost immediately) to long-term memory, where you can retrieve it later.

Start as soon as you know when your test will be.

Know what will be in your test or examination.

Get some sleep. You need as much sleep as possible, otherwise you may be too sleepy to study.

Eat a good breakfast. Studies show that learners who eat breakfast before a test consistently do better.

Avoid the last-minute cram session.

Study right after waking and just before bed.

Activity 1: Listen to a short story 1 hour

Read the following short story to learners: Once upon a time, there were two very intelligent and capable boys, John and Simon. Their wonderful talents were obvious from an early age, and they easily outdid everyone around. They had always known they were special, and they harboured inside them a desire that, in the future, everyone would come to admit how exceptional they were. Each of them developed in a different way. John used all his talent and intelligence to have a successful career and show everyone his superiority. He took part in all kinds of competitions, visited all the most important people and places, and was great at making friends in high places. Everyone knew that one day, he would be the most important person in the land. Simon never stopped feeling a heavy responsibility. He would do almost any task better than those around him, and he would feel obliged to help them. This didn’t leave him enough time to follow his own dreams of greatness. He was always busy looking for ways to help others. As a result, he was a much-loved and well-known person, but only in his own small circle. Destiny was such that a great disaster struck that land, spreading problems and misery far and wide. John had never come across anything like this, but his brilliant ideas worked successfully throughout the land, and they managed to slightly improve the situation. But Simon was so used to solving all kinds of problems that the disaster hardly affected the people in his region at all. His admirable methods were then adopted across the land, and the fame of this good and wise man spread even more than had that of the first young man. Simon was soon elected governor of the whole nation. John then understood that …

Stop reading the story here and ask learners to predict what will happen next in the story. Then continue reading the last paragraph: The first boy then understood that the greatest fame and wisdom is that which comes from the things we do in life, the impact we have on others, and from the need to improve ourselves every day. Ask the learners literal questions on the text, for example: 1. For what did John use his intelligence and talents? (To have a successful career and show everyone his superiority.) 2. Was Simon liked by others? (Yes, he was a much-loved and well-known person.) 3. What did John learn from Simon? Read the story again and ask learners to relate the story to their own lives, for example: a) Do you know someone like John or Simon? Learner’s own. b) What kind of impact did they leave with you? Activity 2: Discuss the story 1 hour

Reread the story and encourage learners to write some questions they have on the story. Tell them that their questions can be as simple or as complex as they’d like. Question words are words such as: Who – is only used when referring to people. Why – is used to obtain an explanation or a reason. How – is used to describe the manner that something is done. When – is used to refer to a time or an occasion. What – is used to refer to specific information. Where – is only used when referring to people. Now, encourage them to recap the story with each other. Ask them to express their opinions about the story. Guide their group discussion by asking questions such as: 1. Do you think Simon showed responsibility? 2. Do you show responsibility to the people in your community? 3. How do you show responsibility? 4. How do you think you can be responsible at home? Make sure learners are able to maintain the discussion, give feedback and can respond with empathy and respect to others’ ideas.

Activity 3: Predict from a title and pictures 30 minutes

Ask learners to turn to Activity 3 and read the title: 1. What does each word in the title mean? Queen refers to royalty, and a journey refers to travelling from one place to another. 2. What do you think the story will be about? The story is about a princess who has many things and gives something of value to a poor boy. The ask them to look at the pictures. 1. What do they tell you about what the story will be about? The pictures provide more detail about the story: it’s about a young girl who is given a small box; she goes for a walk and sees a poor boy on the side of the road; then she hands the box to the boy. 2. How do they relate to the title? We assume the queen refers to the girl and her journey is walking along the road.

Activity 4: Use reading strategies 1 hour

Ask learners to turn to Activity 4 and skim the text.

The Queen’s Journey A young queen was given a special present from a great wizard. It was a magic chest that would bring happiness to the whole kingdom whenever it was opened in a place where there was a spirit of generosity. The queen travelled all over her kingdom, looking for the most generous people. When she had collected them all, she opened the magic chest. However, nothing whatsoever happened. That was, until one day when, returning to her castle, the queen saw a poor little boy begging. The queen would have given the boy some money, but she didn’t have any with her. So the boy asked her if she could give him the old chest she had, so he could sell it in town, for a little money. At first the queen hesitated, because she had been told the chest was magic. But on seeing how poor the boy was, she gave it to him. The boy took the chest and opened it.

Immediately, all the most wonderful things one could imagine started flying out of the chest, accompanied by the sound of singing: “Why look for it in others? Goodness always starts in yourself”, went the song. And as well as enjoying all the wonders of the magic chest, the queen learned to set an example in virtue, and she became the best queen ever to reign over that kingdom. 1. 2.

The queen and the poor boy. The queen is given a small chest from a wizard. The chest would bring happiness to the kingdom if it was opened in a spirit of generosity. The queen travelled across the kingdom looking for generous people, but came across a young boy who was poor. She didn’t have any money to give him so she gave him her chest. When she did that, all goodness came out. Encourage them to use phonic (sounds) and contextual clues to find the meaning of the text: responsibility and thinking of others before yourself. Word level work Common nouns and proper nouns refer to the names of places and things. Can you identify the nouns in the passage above? Write down as many as you can. Ask learners to identify the nouns in the passage they are reading, e.g. queen, present, wizard, chest, kingdom, people, day, castle, boy, money

Activity 5: Discuss new vocabulary 1 hour

Ask learners to turn to Activity 5. In this activity, learners must find words they do not understand. If learners are struggling to find words they don’t understand, ask them to provide their own definitions of the words. (E.g. generosity, returning, hesitated, virtue.) Provide them with a good dictionary, and encourage them to write down the definitions in an exercise book.

Activity 6: Discuss the story in detail 1 hour

Ask learners to turn to Activity 6. Encourage learners to engage in a meaningful and critical discussion about the story.

Use these points to guide the discussion: 1. What is the plot of the story? A wizard gives a young queen a magical chest, which she gives to a poor boy on the side of the road, as it was all she had to give. 2. Who are the characters? The young queen and the poor boy. 3. What kind of people are they? The young queen is wealthy; she has a lot of things; she lives in a castle. The boy has no possessions and no food; he is a beggar. 4. What is the setting of the story? A kingdom. 5. What are your feelings toward the characters? Learner’s own. 6. What is the cause and effect in this story? Doing a kind deed causes goodness and kindness to flow from others. Cause and effect is when one event causes another one to happen. The cause is why it happens and the effect is what happens.

Activity 7: Reflect on texts read independently 1 hour

In this activity, learners must reflect on two or three books or articles they have read on their own. They can use the story in Activity 4 as one of the texts if needed. It may be a good idea to encourage learners to have the books with them when they reflect on the books. Note: When learners are asked to relate texts to their own life, it is important for them to a) express how the text has changed their perspective on a subject, b) identify members of their family or friends that are similar to the characters, and c) identify similarities or differences in setting, etc.

Activity 8: Compare texts read independently 30 minutes

To compare one thing to another means to find the ways in which they are similar and the ways in which they differ. Bring two books, posters, magazines, etc. to the lesson. Ask learners in which ways they are similar and how they differ. Explain that they have just compared two things with each other. Now, encourage learners to compare the books/texts from Activity 7. Explain that comparing means to find the ways the books are similar and the ways they differ. Encourage any kind of comparison, from the colour of the book to the plot and style.

Activity 9: Prewriting: Read a book review 30 minutes

Ask learners to turn to Activity 9 and read the book review with them. Encourage them to engage in a discussion about the following: 1. The structure of a book review is simple, short and to the point. It will always have the name of the book, the author, a brief description of the book and a personal review. 2. The language use is conversational and light-hearted. Sentences are short, and words are simple. 3. The purpose of a book review is to make potential readers aware of what to expect in the book and to sway them to either to read it or not. 4. The audience will be determined by the type of book being reviewed. In this case, it will be primary school children.

Activity 10: Brainstorm ideas 30 minutes

Read through the activity with learners. Discuss a few appropriate topic ideas for their story. Ask learners to take out a pen and paper and begin writing down some brainstorming ideas.

Activity 11: Write a short summary 30 minutes

Encourage learners to write a full summary of their story. Their summary needs to outline the events and actions of the story, as well as introduce and develop the characters. Make sure learners are aware that this isn’t the whole story, but a summary of events.

Activity 12: Write a topic sentence 30 minutes

Explain to learners the structure of a story: introduction, body and conclusion. Their story needs to have these three paragraphs. The introduction is short, concise and introduces the story. The body must be the longest part of the story. The conclusion is also short and concise, and concludes the story.

To help them plan their word count, tell them that the introduction and conclusion can be 30 words each and the body can be 60 words. This will give them their 120 words. Encourage learners to write a topic sentence for their first paragraph. The topic sentence is the first sentence of the paragraph and is the most important, as it introduces the paragraph. The topic sentence needs to be punchy and grabbing, e.g. “The room was cold and there was a strange hissing sound coming from behind the closed door to my right.” This sentence sets the scene and the tone of the paragraph, and it encourages you to read further.

Activity 13: Produce a first draft 1 hour

Encourage learners to write their first draft. Once they have their full story written down, encourage them to stat proofreading their work for any spelling errors or grammatical errors. Allow them to use different colour pens when they are revising and proofreading their texts. Language structures and conventions Quotation marks Quotation marks indicate the portion of words spoken by someone, e.g. John said, “Please come to the house.” Encourage learners to use quotation marks (direct speech) in their stories.

Activity 14: Dictionary work 30 minutes

Encourage learners to use a dictionary to check their spelling and to increase their vocabulary by finding synonyms for simple words. Language structures and conventions Synonyms Revise synonyms: synonyms are words with a similar meaning, e.g. worktable and desk. Use a thesaurus to find synonyms in your stories. Encourage them to use a thesaurus to find synonyms in their stories.
