PREFACE RECOMMENDED BOOKS Below is a short list of age-appropriate books: • Stuart Little by E.B White • The Adventures of a Taxi Dog by Debra Barracca and Sal Barracca • Matilda by Roald Dahl • Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede • Holes by Louis Sachar • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins • Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick • Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt

INTRODUCTION The study guide is divided into four units and 18 lessons. Each lesson is taught over two weeks. Units 1 and 3 have five themed lessons each, and Units 2 and 4 have four themed lessons each. At the end of Units 2 and 4, learners write examinations. Each lesson has four sections: Listening and Speaking, Reading and Viewing, Writing and Presenting, and Language Structures and Conventions. Each section contains activities. At the beginning of each lesson is a list of the things that will be covered in that lesson. At the end of each lesson are remedial and extension activities, which may be completed if time allows. Each section is broken down into activities. Some of these activities will be used as part of formal assessment tasks. Refer to the portfolio book for all formal assessment tasks. Addendum A at the back of the book contains the rubrics that will be used to assess your assessment tasks.

SECTION 1

SECTION 1:

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Activity 1: Listen to a short story Your facilitator will read you a story. Listen carefully as the story is read. Discuss the following points: 1. For what did John use his intelligence and talents? 2. Was Simon liked by others? 3. What did John learn from Simon? 4. Relate the story to your own life, for example: a) Do you know someone like John or Simon? b) What kind of impact did they leave with you? c) Do you think you are more like John or Simon? d) Why do you say this?

Activity 2: Discuss the story Your facilitator will reread the story to you, and will guide you in a discussion about the story. As you hear the story, write some questions about the text. Your questions can be asking for answers directly out of the story, or they can be asking for more information from the story. Question words are words such as: Who – is only used when referring to people. Why – is used to obtain an explanation or a reason. How – is used to describe the manner that something is done. When – is used to refer to a time or an occasion. What – is used to refer to specific information. Where – is only used when referring to people. Consider these questions as you engage in your discussion: 1. Do you think Simon showed responsibility? 2. Do you show responsibility to the people in your community? 3. How do you show responsibility? 4. How do you think you can be responsible at home?

Remember: When you take part in a discussion, it is important that you express your opinions clearly, and that you listen to what others say. You don’t have to agree with what they say, but you must always respect what they say. Look at the rubric in Addendum A to see how you will be assessed.

SECTION 2

SECTION 2:

READING AND VIEWING

Activity 3: Predict from a title and pictures Read the title of the story below. “The Queen’s Journey” 1. 2.

What does each word in the title mean? What do you think the story will be about?

Look at the pictures below. 1. What do they tell you about what the story will be about? 2. How do they relate to the title?

Activity 4: Use reading strategies Skim the text below. To skim a text means to read over the words quickly and get the gist of the story. As you skim, pick out the most important information, such as characters, places and events. It is also a good idea to pick out any words of which you do not know the meaning.

The Queen’s Journey A young queen was given a special present from a great wizard. It was a magic chest that would bring happiness to the whole kingdom whenever it was opened in a place where there was a spirit of generosity. The queen travelled all over her kingdom, looking for the most generous people. When she had collected them all, she opened the magic chest. However, nothing whatsoever happened. That was, until one day when, returning to her castle, the queen saw a poor little boy begging. The queen would have given the boy some money, but she didn’t have any with her. So the boy asked her if she could give him the old chest she had, so he could sell it in town, for a little money. At first the queen hesitated, because she had been told the chest was magic. But on seeing how poor the boy was, she gave it to him. The boy took the chest and opened it. Immediately, all the most wonderful things one could imagine started flying out of the chest, accompanied by the sound of singing: “Why look for it in others? Goodness always starts in yourself”, went the song. And as well as enjoying all the wonders of the magic chest, the queen learned to set an example in virtue, and she became the best queen ever to reign over that kingdom. Once you have skimmed the text: 1. Write down the names of the characters. 2. What happened in the story? 3. What is the meaning of the text? Language structures and conventions Word level work Common nouns and proper nouns refer to the names of places and things. Can you identify the nouns in the passage above? Write down as many as you can.

Activity 5: Discuss new vocabulary 1. 2. 3.

Reread the story. Underline unfamiliar words from the story. Using a dictionary, write down the meanings of the words from Question 2.

Activity 6: Discuss the story in detail Discuss the following points:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

What is the plot of the story? Who are the characters? What type of people are they? What is the setting of the story? What are your feelings toward the characters? What is the cause and effect in this story?

Cause and effect is when one event causes another one to happen. The cause is why it happens and the effect is what happens. Look at the rubric in Addendum A to see how you will be assessed.

Activity 7: Reflect on texts read independently

When you are asked to relate texts to your own life, it is important for you to: 1. Express how the text has changed your perspective on a subject. 2. Identify members of your family or friends that are similar to the characters. 3. Identify similarities or differences in setting, etc. Think of two or three books or articles that you have read on your own. Reflect on the texts you have chosen by following these steps: 1. Retell each of the stories by answering these questions: a) What were they about? b) Who were the characters? c) What happened in the story? 2. What was your response to each of the books? 3. How can you relate the stories to your own life? Look at the rubric in Addendum A to see how you will be assessed.

WRITING AND PRESENTING

Activity 9: Prewriting: Read a book review Read the book review below:

BOOK REVIEW Book title: Matilda Author: Roald Dahl What is the book about? This book is about a little girl, Matilda. She is very clever. Her parents send her to school, where her teacher, Miss Honey, soon realises that Matilda is a genius and tries to help her. School is difficult for Matilda because the headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, is a bully and doesn’t like Matilda. Everyone is scared of Miss Trunchbull. One day, Matilda realises that she has special powers, and she uses these powers to defeat Miss Trunchbull and help Miss Honey. What is the setting? There are a number of places in the book: the village library, Matilda’s home, the school, Miss Honey’s cottage and the home of Miss Trunchbull. Who are the characters? The characters are Matilda, her parents, the librarian, Miss Honey and Miss Trunchbull. What did you enjoy most about this book? This book was so humorous. I enjoyed the part when Matilda glued her dad’s hat onto his head, then tricks her parents into believing there is a ghost in the house.

Would you recommend this book? Why or why not? I would recommend this book because it is funny, and it captivated me. It has made me want to be responsible for my friends by not allowing them to be bullied. Discuss the following points: 1. The structure (how the review is laid out). 2. The language use (which words have been used and why). 3. The purpose (why was the review written). 4. The audience (who will read the review).

Activity 10: Brainstorm ideas You are going to write your own story. You can choose to write about anything, but the message of the story must be about being responsible. Your story must be 120 words and three paragraphs long. Start jotting down the things you want to say in your story, such as: 1. The events that will take place. 2. The characters. 3. What it means to be responsible. 4. How you show responsibility. 5. How the message of your story will show responsibility

Activity 11: Write a short summary Write a short summary on your story: 1. Read through your brainstorming ideas. 2. Now, write a short summary of what you want in your story. Your summary must include all the events and characters you want in your story.

Activity 12: Write a topic sentence 1. 2.

Read through the summary you wrote in Activity 11. Now, write a topic sentence for your first paragraph.

Study Guide G05 ~ English Home Language

The topic sentence is the first sentence of the paragraph, and the most important as it introduces the paragraph. The topic sentence needs to be punchy and grabbing, e.g.: “The room was cold and there was a strange hissing sound coming from behind the closed door to my right.” This sentence sets the scene and the tone of the paragraph, and it encourages you to read further. 3.

Form some of your ideas into one coherent paragraph.

Each paragraph must contain a new idea. The introduction is short, concise and introduces the story. The body must be the longest part of the story. The conclusion is also short and concise, and concludes the story.

Activity 13: Produce a first draft Take the paragraph you wrote in Activity 12, and develop your story into two more paragraphs. Then edit your story. Here’s your first draft checklist: 1. Do I have three paragraphs? 2. Do my paragraphs link together nicely? 3. Have I used quotation marks to show speech? 4. Have I used appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation? Language structures and conventions Quotation marks Quotation marks indicate the portion of words spoken by someone, e.g. John said, “Please come to the house.”

Activity 14: Dictionary work Read through your first draft, and use a dictionary to check your spelling.

Language structures and conventions Synonyms Revise synonyms: synonyms are words with a similar meaning, e.g. worktable and desk. Use a thesaurus to find synonyms in your stories.

Activity 15: Write a final draft Now that you have written your first draft and checked your spelling, it is time to write your final draft.

1. 2.

Write out your story in full, revising and proofreading it as you go. Once you are confident that your story is perfect, write it out neatly and present it.

SECTION 4

SECTION 4:

LANGUAGE STRUCTURES AND CONVENTIONS

Activity 16: Sentence level work Read the definitions for the types of sentences. The simple sentence is a sentence with one verb, and it deals with one idea, e.g. John helps people. The compound sentence is a sentence with two or more verbs. It may be made up of two simple sentences and joined with a conjunction, e.g. John helps people and plays soccer. The complex sentence is a sentence that contains a main thought with other thoughts that provide additional information. These thoughts (clauses) are joined by conjunctions, e.g. John helps people while he works at his doctor’s practice after he plays soccer. 1. 2.

Look at the story in Activity 4. a) Identify the types of sentences. b) Explain the types of sentences. Write two simple sentences. 23

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Activity 18: Listen to an information text

An information text is a text that informs you about a subject. In this case, the information text is about “respect”. An information text is mostly written in formal language, and can sometimes use words we do not understand. This is why it is important to keep your dictionary close when reading or listening to an information text. Engage in a short discussion on the following points: 1. What do you think respect is? 2. To whom do you show respect? 3. Why do you show those people respect? Your facilitator will read you an information text. 1. Discuss any vocabulary that you do not understand. 2. Has your opinion of what respect is changed after listening to the text?

Activity 19: Discuss an information text Your facilitator will reread the information text to you and will engage in a discussion with you. Here are some questions to think about as you engage in your discussion: 1. What do you think respect is? 2. How do you show people respect? 3. Whom do you respect? 4. Why do you think it is important to show respect? 5. What do you think cause and effect is, and how do you think this relates to respect?
