Facilitator’s Guide G06 ~Bible Education
Introduction Dear parents Welcome to Bible Education: One of the most important subjects your child will be exposed to. You have a responsibility to teach your children about faith and religion. We need to teach our children the content of the Bible and raise them to accept its guidelines as the foundation for their lives. You are welcome to use your favourite Bible translation when reading Scripture verses to your child. Remember that repetition is the best way to learn something. Repeat the verses as often as you can. You can also purchase any of the Scripture-based children’s Bibles available in book shops. It is important for learners to get used to the “sound of the Scripture”. They must listen to and memorise Bible verses as they are written in the Bible. The language used in Bibles (even modern translations) differs from the language we use every day. It is best to expose learners to the language of the Bible so that they may use the Bible with confidence. Start or close off every day’s lesson with a prayer. Prayer guidelines accompany every lesson, but it is important for learners to learn to pray on their own. Encourage your child to pray and set an example by also praying. People who were imprisoned, tortured and traumatised for religious or other reasons often testify that the Scripture verses they memorised as children carried them through those difficult times. We are going to discuss the life stories of Bible characters. Learners must memorise at least one Scripture verse from every theme. Key verses are provided to choose from. Regularly test your child to ensure that they still remember the verses and understand their meaning. The parts from the Bible that are discussed in Grade 5, 6 and 7 form a unit. This is arranged by theme and is not necessarily chronological. The theme for Grade 5 is ‘God’s people’. We examine the reaction of the people who lived in biblical times to the words and work of God. The examples serve as guidelines for learners to make their own decision to obey God. In Grade 6 the theme is ‘How I live’. Learners will learn how to live a life of obedience and faith. In Grade 7 the theme is ‘God teaches me’. The all-important objective is to guide learners (as true believers) to direct their life and habits to the Word of God. Only the lesson outlines have been provided – parents must flesh it out by using the Bible, through discussions and prayers, but most importantly by setting an example through the way 2

they live. This is the most important task and assignment that God has given parents: He gave you children as a wonderful gift from His hand and He expects you to raise them to honour His name. May the time you and your children spend in the Word of God bring you great joy and many blessings. Remember the following: 1.
2.
3.
The ladder of faith is the most important thing that you can teach your child. Other academic subjects have no value for eternity. Only by teaching your child that we can be saved through Jesus Christ, can you give him/her an opportunity to stand in front of the throne of the Almighty God one day. Use the Bible. The Bible is the Word of God. Every member of the family should have their own Bible. You may use any Bible translation, but make sure that your child is able to use and understand the language used in that specific translation. Spend enough time with your child and as a family with the Word of God and in prayer.
Work schedule There is a task for every day of every Unit (six weeks for Unit 1; nine weeks for Unit 2, nine weeks for Unit 3; and six weeks for Unit 4). There are 30 reading lessons for Units 1 and 4 and 45 reading lessons for Units 2 and 3. Start every day with Bible Education. It is the best time of the day to take in the Word of God. Make sure that there is enough time, not only to discuss the lesson content, but also to discuss the important values of the lesson content. Assessment You will notice that there are no tests, exams or continuous assessments in the Bible Education learning plan. Bible Education is not an examination subject. This doesn’t mean that you cannot do you own assessments. You can select the Scripture verses you want your child to memorise. Grade 5 learners are expected to repeat the broad outline of Bible stories. In Grade 6 finer details such as names and places are added and learners are expected to give the broad outline of the message of the story. In Grade 7 learners must be able to give even finer details such as the correct version of Bible stories and the meaning of it in their own lives. To ensure that the truths and values of faith are reinforced, Bible Education employs the same techniques as in other subjects. All three levels are tested: knowledge, understanding and application. For example, can learners identify the main character(s) in a Bible story? (Knowledge). Do learners understand that Daniel’s obedience to God landed him in trouble with 3

important people? (Understanding). Can learners distinguish between right and wrong in their own life? (Application). Do revision every day and regularly test learners’ knowledge and levels of understanding of the work. Repeat information regularly and pray for everything that is being read, discussed and learned. Other resources Although the singing of hymns and gospel songs does not form part of this subject, it is still a great way to teach children about God and to help them to remember and understand the content of the Bible. You are more than welcome to use other resources as well, but keep in mind that the Bible itself is the most important resource of all. Letter to learners I conclude this short facilitator’s guide with a letter to learners: Dear friend Welcome to one of the greatest subjects that you will ever study: Bible Education. You will get to know God and His Word (the Bible) better as we study the most beautiful stories ever told; stories that: • are true • teach us about God’s love • help us to live our life in the right way. May each Bible story help you to: • see and experience God’s love • hold on to God and trust Him • be an example to your friends and others around you. The study guide has been compiled in such a way that you: • will work with the Bible itself • will get to know the content of the Bible • will be able to use the Bible with confidence. The main goal of Bible Education is to teach you how to be an obedient follower of Jesus by following the examples set by people whom you are going to read and learn about. Make sure that you have your own Bible and read from it every day. It is the most important book you will ever read. It is the greatest story ever told! Enjoy every moment! 4
