Facilitator’s Guide G07 ~ Bible Education
PREFACE Dear facilitator, Welcome to Bible Education: One of the most important subjects the learner will be exposed to. Teaching the learner about faith and religion is an important task we as facilitators have here on earth. We need teach the learner the content of the Bible and raise them to accept the guidelines of the Bible as the foundation of their lives. Please read the Bible verses that are given to the learner in your favourite version of the Bible. Remember that repetition is the best way to learn something. Repeat the verses as often as you can. You can also purchase any of the Scripture true children’s Bibles that are available in stores. Remember that it is very important for the learner to get used to the “sound of the scripture”. He/she must listen to and memorise the Bible verses as they are written in the Bible. The language of the Bible (even modern versions) are different from the language that we use every day and therefore it is important to expose the learner to the language of the Bible. This will allow him/her to use the Bible with confidence. Start or end every day’s lesson with a prayer. There is a guideline with every lesson, but it is important for the child to learn to pray on his/her own. Encourage the learner to pray and set an example by also praying. People who were imprisoned, tortured and traumatised, for religious or other reasons, often testify that the Bible verses they memorised as children helped and carried them through those times of torment. This year we are going to discuss the life stories of figures of the Bible. The learner must learn at least one Bible verse from every theme off by heart. I will provide key verses for you to choose from. Regularly test the learner to ensure that they still remember the verses and understand their meaning. The parts from the Bible that are discussed in Grade 5, 6 and 7 form a unit. This is managed by theme and not chronologically. In Grade 5 the theme is “God’s people”. We examine the reaction of the people who lived in Biblical times to the words and work of God. The example (sometimes good, sometimes bad) serves as a guideline for your child to make his/her own decisions to obey God. In Grade 6 the theme is “How I live”. The learner will learn how to live a life of obedience and faith.

In Grade 7 the theme is “God teaches me”. The all important objective is to guide the learner (as a true believer) to direct his/her life and habits to the Word of God. I just present the outlines of the lessons – you as facilitator must flesh it out by using the Bible, through discussions and prayers, but most importantly by setting an example through the way you live. This is the most important task and assignment that you received from God. May the time you and the learner spend around the Word of God bring you great joy and blessings. Please remember the following: 1) The ladder of faith is the MOST important thing that you can teach the learner. Other academic subjects have no value for eternity. Only by teaching the learner that we can be saved through Jesus Christ, can you give him/her an opportunity to stand in front of the throne of the Almighty God one day. 2) Use the Bible. The Bible is the Word of God. Every member of the family should have their own Bible and must use it. You may use any version of the Bible, but make sure that your child will be able to use and understand the words from that specific version. 3) Spend enough time with the learner as a family with the Word of God and in prayer. Work schedule There is a task for every day of every Unit (six weeks for Unit 1; nine weeks for Unit 2, nine weeks for Unit 3; and six weeks for Unit 4).There 30 readinglessons for Units 1 and 4 and 45 reading-lessons for Units 2 and 3. Start everyday with the Bible period. It is the most important period of the day. Make sure that there is enough time, not only to discuss the lesson content, but also to discuss the important values of the lesson content. Assessment You will notice that there are no tests, examinations or continuous assessments in the Bible Education learning plan. Bible Education is not an examination subject. This doesn’t mean that you cannot do you own assessments. You can select the Bible verses you want the learner to learn by heart. In Grade 5 learners must be able to repeat the broad outline of the Bible story. In Grade 6 finer details such as names and places are added and we expect them to give the broad outline of the message of the story. And in Grade 7 they must be able to give finer details, correct versions of the Bible story and the meaning of it for their own lives.

To ensure that the values and truths of faith are reinforced, we use the same techniques as in other subjects: Test all three levels: Knowledge, understanding and application. For example: Can the learner identify the main character? (knowledge). Does the learner understand that Daniel’s obedience to God landed him in trouble with important people? (understanding). Can the learner distinguish between right and wrong in his/her own life? (application). Do revision every day and regularly test the learner’s knowledge and levels of understanding of the work. Repeat information regularly and pray for everything that is being read, discussed and learnt. Other resources Although the singing of hymns and gospel songs does not form part of this subject, it is still a wonderful way to teach the learner about God and to help them to remember and understand the content of the Bible. You are more than welcome to use other resources as well. Just remember that the Bible itself is the most important resource of all. I conclude this short Facilitator’s Guide with a letter to the learner: Welcome to one of the greatest subjects that you will study this year: Bible Education. In this subject we learn more about God and His Word, the Bible. But you know this already, don’t you? This year we will study some of the most beautiful stories ever told, stories that: teach
us about God’s love help us to live our life in the right way. May each Bible story help you to: see
God’s love hold on to God more be an example to your friends and other people. The Study Guide is put together in such a way that you: will
work with the Bible itself will get to know the content of the Bible will be able to handle the Bible with confidence.

The lessons differ from other school work – you will enjoy learning more about God. In every one of the lessons there is an explanation to help you to understand the Bible text better. The main goal is to teach you how to be an obedient follower of Jesus by following the examples set by the people who you are going to read and learn about. Make sure that you have your own Bible and read from it every day. Remember: nothing is more important than what you learn from God. Remember that Jesus loves you so much that He gave His life so that you can live for all eternity. Such a gift makes one very happy – show and live that happiness! You may sing and laugh and dance and skip because God loves you. Do it! Enjoy every moment!

Unit
UNIT 1: God cares for us and teaches us LEARNING AIMS: After completing this unit, the learner must know the following:
That God loves you. That God cares for you. You do not need to worry, just trust in God. God looks after nature. We should only love God. We should obey God. God still performs miracles today.
INTRODUCTION The most important things we must know and learn in life are the things that God teaches us. Nothing is more important than God: not school work, money, sport, or playtime or work. In the Bible we learn how God has worked with people through the ages and how God also work with us in this way every day. We must learn everything that God wants us to do. We learn these things in the Bible. God talks to us through the Bible. He uses the Bible to teach us. The Bible is the most important book you must read and learn from. We get important values by studying the Bible. You are never too young to start studying the Bible. Read your Bible on a daily basis. In this way God teaches you and you get to know Him and love Him. ACTIVITY 4
Obedient: Compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority. Holy: Dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred. Mercy: Compassion or forgiveness shown towards someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm. Advent: When Jesus comes back to Earth.
