UNIT 1 Geography of the Biblical lands LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this unit you should be able to do the following:
Demonstrate knowledge of the location of the various Biblical lands within Palestine. Demonstrate knowledge of the climate, animal and plant life in the Biblical lands. Demonstrate knowledge of the various Biblical lands outside Palestine.
INTRODUCTION This unit focuses on the geography of the Biblical lands within and outside Palestine. If the learner has a good idea of the country's location, the story of the Bible would be much more credible. This gives the learner the assurance that these countries did in fact exist and that they are not merely imaginary places that people have thought out. The unit also tells the learner more about the plants and animals that are found in these countries. Many of these plants and animals are mentioned in the Bible. This provides the learner with a broader knowledge of the Bible. Lesson 1: Geography of the Biblical lands in Palestine FOR THE CURIOUS: Guidelines for the facilitator regarding the instruction to the learner. Archaeologists work with artefacts. These are abandoned manufactured products of man. It also includes material remains of people, such as skeletons. The archaeology of Palestine is called Biblical archaeology. Biblical archaeology is a unique kind of archaeology. The Biblical excavations are done to answer the following question: "How do the observed facts fit into the story of the Bible?" Over the years, the excavations in Egypt and Palestine have increasingly confirmed the reliability of the Bible. Research methods have also changed over the years. These days, every single surface is scrutinised in detail by using state of the art scientific methods. Archaeology teaches us that people always left something behind after they have lived in a place. We can learn a lot from these objects that were left behind. We learn about their way of life, food consumption, agricultural methods, religion, rituals and culture. Discuss the learner's findings with him/her. The learner may also use the Internet to find information. The learner may also search for nice photos of the excavations and paste these in his/her workbook. The facilitator should guide the learner in the research and offer the learner the opportunity to broaden his/her knowledge of the world of the Bible. © Impaq

Knowledge of the geography of the Biblical lands is essential for a thorough understanding of the Bible. Most places in the Bible are not known to us and we have never seen these places. To us, the Biblical lands are merely names of unknown places. As soon as we can visualise ourselves in these places, even only in our imagination, the Bible becomes a reality to us. (Any five facts are correct.) (5) A tell is a ruins hill of old cities from Biblical times. In Biblical times most cities were built on a hill to ensure greater safety. When the city was destroyed by war or earthquakes, the ground was simply levelled and the next city built on top of the ruins. (Any four facts are correct.) (4) The Caspian Sea (1) The Euphrates and the Tigris. (2) God planned it so that all civilisations would originate from here. The trade routes passed through Palestine, which meant that people of different nations and cultures travelled through there. Palestine formed the centre of three world regions. Therefore, it was the ideal place from where to spread the Gospel. (Any two facts are correct.) (2) The Philistine vlakte OR Philistéa. (1) Dotan (1) Lower-Galilee and Upper-Galilee (2) Any ONE of the following: Makkedah; Machpelah; Addulam (1) Any TWO: wheat, dates, flax, rice, tropical fruit. UNIT 2 History of the Old Testament: Biblical figures LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this unit the learner should be able to do the following: Demonstrate a wider knowledge of the importance of Creation. Demonstrate a wider knowledge of the history of the most important figures in the Old Testament period.
INTRODUCTION The unit starts with the Creation of the world. The learner is introduced to the God who has created the earth and everything on it from absolutely nothing at all. This once again makes the learner aware of God's power and control and that nothing happens without God planning it. The learner is also introduced to the figures from the Old Testament who have all played an important role in die fulfilment of the gospel. The learners meet Cain, Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Esau, Joseph and Moses. Lesson 8: The Creation FOR THE CURIOUS: The following information about cherubs serves as a guideline to facilitator when discussing the learner's research. It is believed that a cherub is a type of angel. In the Bible, two spiritual beings are mentioned: on the one hand there are the angels, and on the other, the devils. The angels are in a personal relationship with God, while the devils are in revolt against God. The appearance of cherubs is mentioned only in a few places in the Bible. In Ezekiel we read that he sees cherubs, but he gives confusing descriptions of them. The cherubs are often associated with fire; for example, the cherubs who guarded the entrance to the Garden of Eden were armed with flaming swords. It is also mentioned in the Bible that cherubs were carved from wood and were worshipped as idols. The Babylonians and Assyrians made cherub sculptures with the head of an eagle or a lion. The Israelites placed two golden cherubs on the lid of the Ark of the Covenant. Solomon also put two giant cherubs in his temple. The cherubs were the symbol of God's greatness. Below is an illustration of the cherubs at the entrance to the Garden of Eden. (www.jw.org) © Impaq
