LISTENING AND SPEAKING
Activity 1: Participate in a group discussion 45 minutes Engage learners in a general discussion around traditional ceremonies of all kinds, for example, Zulu weddings, Xhosa culture, ancestral worship, Christmas, Yom Kippur, Easter, Diwali, etc. Include as many South African cultures as you can. Bring pictures, books, magazines, posters and physical props to encourage discussions. Encourage each learner to participate.
Activity 2: Do a listening comprehension test 1 hour 15 minutes Read the following article to learners. This article compares the traditional with the modern Zulu wedding ceremony.
Zulu weddings: Traditional versus modern ceremonies Traditional Zulu weddings have evolved over the years. Let’s compare the traditional wedding with the more recent version of the Zulu nuptial ceremony. Traditional ceremony The traditional Zulu wedding is called umabo. When a Zulu girl informs her father that she’s ready to get married, her father arranges a ceremony to inform the public about her availability. Once the bride has found her prince, the negotiations for her cattle for lobola can begin. Lobola is the most important aspect of the wedding and marriage. Lobola is a tradition where the groom’s family and the bride’s family meet to discuss how much the groom is willing to offer the family for their daughter. It is a great and effective way of uniting and solidifying the two families. After lobola has been finalised, the wedding date is set. This process is called ukubona izinkomo. Once a date that suits both families is set, the bride’s family begins to prepare for the ceremony. The bride’s family slaughters a goat after the ancestors have been told that she is getting married. The goat is used in a ceremony known as umncamo in order for the ancestors to protect the daughter. The groom’s family slaughters a goat to welcome the bride into the family. After the ceremony, the bride is expected to stay with the groom’s family. Evolved traditional wedding ceremony Nowadays, Zulu brides have a “white wedding” as well as umabo. What often happens is that the “white wedding” will happen in the morning, while the traditional ceremony will occur either later in the day,

the next day, or whenever the couple is financially ready. Many people wed traditionally first and then when they are financially ready, they have a “white wedding”. As long as there is a marriage certificate obtained either from the Department of Home Affairs or from the priest of their church, the marriage is valid. When the bride arrives at the groom’s family’s house, she has to walk around the house. This is for her to be introduced to the ancestors of the groom. This is done, preferably, in the bride’s white wedding dress. The bride then changes into her traditional wedding attire. Gifts from the bride are given to the groom’s family according to a list drawn up by the groom’s family. Tradition and customs vary between families. Zulus try very hard to stick to the traditional part of the wedding ceremony, since the modern wedding is not easy to orchestrate as it depends a lot on the two families and their circumstances. Engage in a short discussion about the text by asking learners questions. For example: 1. What is the main idea? 2. Can you relate to what is in this article? 3. What is lobola? 4. What does the bride wear in a modern wedding? 5. How do the traditional and modern wedding ceremonies differ? 6. What kinds of wedding experiences have you had?
SUGGESTED ANSWERS TO ACTIVITY 2:
1. 2.
The main idea is a comparison between traditional and modern wedding ceremonies. Learner’s own answer, as it is dependent on their own experiences of cultural wedding experiences. Lobola is how much the groom is willing to offer the family for their daughter. Lobola is a way for the groom to show his appreciation for how the family has raised the woman he wants to marry. It is also a way to unite the two families together. The bride wears a white dress since they have a “white wedding”. In the traditional wedding ceremony, lobola is offered and once negotiated on the wedding date is set. Both the bride and groom’s family will slaughter a goat, which is not done in the modern ceremony. In the modern ceremony, the bride wears a white dress, and the bride will walk around the groom’s family’s house in her wedding dress. Learner’s own answer, as it is dependent on their own experiences.

advantages and disadvantages of both. Bring an anthology of short stories (such as Storyscapes) with which the learners can engage to the lesson. A short story is longer than an essay and shorter than a novel. It captures an event in a short space of time. As with any story, a short story needs a plot, characters and a setting.
1.
The plot refers to what the story is about. The characters refer to the people in the story. The setting refers to the place the story is set.
2.
This is based on learner’s own opinions. Suggested answer: A novel is longer than a short story, but it has more of a storyline and characters develop more in a novel than a short story. While short stories are shorter, they are easier to read and generally contain morals.
Pros and cons refer to the advantages and disadvantages of something.
Activity 4: Read a short story 1 hour Instruct learners to read the short story in Activity 4. Vocabulary in context Encourage learners to underline any unfamiliar words, e.g. obligation, unsung, penetrate.
Activity 5: Discuss a short story 30 minutes Engage learners in a general discussion about the features in this short story. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
There is the speaker, and others who he mentions. The climax is the fire that starts without warning and out of the blue. Uganda The message could be to enjoy the things that happen as these create memories that are forever and invaluable. Learner’s own. 21

Language structures and conventions Pronouns Recap pronouns with learners. Personal pronouns refer to people or things (I, you, she he, they) Possessive pronouns indicate ownership (his, hers) Reflexive pronouns reflect back to the noun (himself, herself) Relative pronouns join one part of the sentence to another (whom, which, that, who, whose) Encourage them to make sentences using these pronouns.
Activity 6: Answer questions on a short story 1 hour Instruct learners to read the story in Activity 4 again and answer the questions on their own. 1. The title of the story is “Sweet memories”. 2. The author is Philip Baryaruha. 3. The speaker grew up in Bushenyi District Western Uganda. 4. The speaker grew up in “mizirigyembe” village. 5. The children would be woken up by the sound of the metallic milk containers knocking on each other as they were being carried by the milkmen. 6. They spent their lunch times trapping guinea fowl, mudfish, and looking for wild honey. 7. The opposite hill to the village called “ishekye” would suddenly catch fire. 8. The fire would start around 8 pm, and would appear in intervals ranging from weeks to months. The fire burnt so brightly that it provided light to all surrounding villages. 9. It means “ishekye is on fire”. 10. The Bacwezi are people who were believed to be semi-gods and were rumoured to have superior powers. 11. Learner’s own. 12. I know the speaker enjoyed living in the village because he says it was a privilege to live there, and that it was a marvel. Also, the general mood and tone of the story is positive and full of life and excitement. 13. Learner’s own. For example, both are events that happen at a specific time, or as a result of something else. This one is a small one compared to a wedding or ceremony.

WRITING AND PRESENTING
Activity 7: Plan a narrative essay 30 minutes Ask learners to turn to Activity 7 of their study guide. Read through the information box about writing a narrative essay with learners. A narrative essay is an essay that tells a story, or gives an account of events. It often revolves around a plot or storyline, and it sometimes has a moral. Tips to writing a narrative essay: • Plan well. It is important to plan a narrative essay well, as this ensures your thoughts progress logically. • The introduction always tells the time and the setting, and it introduces the characters. • The body has a number of paragraphs. Each paragraph contains a new thought that builds up to the climax (the highlight of the story). • The conclusion ties the story up. • The characters develop and should be limited in number. • Dialogue should be used sparingly. The narrative essay shouldn’t look like a play script. • Use the past tense. Write the essay topic on the board, and engage in a short discussion on possible ceremonies about which the learners could use to write. Instruct them to plan their essay by drawing up a mind map.
Activity 8: Draft a narrative essay 30 minutes Learners write their first draft. Language structures and conventions Synonyms and antonyms Recap synonyms (words similar in meaning) with learners. Recap antonyms (words with opposite meaning) with learners. Encourage learners to play with words by using a thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms to use in their essays.

LANGUAGE STRUCTURES AND CONVENTIONS
Activity 11: Subject-verb agreement 30 minutes Ask learners to turn to Activity 11. Go through the theory of subject-verb agreement with them. Say a few sentences, and encourage learners to say a few sentences, and ask them to indicate the subject-verb agreement. Subject-verb agreement means that the subject in a sentence and the verb must agree. For example, John was helping the lady cross the road. “John” is the subject, and is singular. There is only one boy. “was” is the singular verb. John and James were helping the lady cross the road. “John and James” is the subject. There are two boys. “were” is the plural verb. You cannot use expressions like “I is”, “she am”, “it are”. You say “I am”, “she is”, “it is”. Singular subjects must be followed by singular verbs and plural subjects by plural verbs. Then instruct them to complete the activity on their own. © Impaq

LISTENING AND SPEAKING
Activity 13: Listen to a speech 1 hour Read the following speech to learners. This is a snippet of the speech delivered by President Jacob Zuma during the official launch of the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Garankuwa, Pretoria on 14 April 2015. Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla, Chairperson of the Interim Council, Professor Olive Shisana, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Mr Mduduzi Manana, Academics and students, Distinguished guests, Ladies and gentlemen I am delighted to form part of the launch of the third new university in South Africa, the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. In the State of the Nation Address on 17 June 2014, I indicated that education remains an apex priority of this government. Government will continue to invest in education and skills as the key to economic growth and development. Today’s event is another example of the fulfilment of that commitment. South Africa today is faced with an extensive shortage and an inadequate distribution of health professionals. We have an undersupply of new and appropriately trained health science graduates, which is why we need to focus on producing this important health professional core. The establishment of Sefako Makgatho University therefore provides an excellent opportunity for the development and training of a new generation of health professionals who will make a positive impact on the lives and livelihoods of the many South Africans still marginalised by poverty and lack of access to health services. The university will go beyond only training medical doctors. It will also produce other health professionals such as dentists, nurses, physiotherapists, medical technologists, radiographers, and so on. Funding has been made available for this university to take off. For 2015/16 financial year an amount of more than two hundred and ninety eight million rand (R298m) has been allocated in the form of a university subsidy to support the operations of the institution. In addition, government has also allocated R210 million to support the establishment of this new university. It is not a coincidence that this university is named after former ANC president, Mr Sefako Mapogo Makgatho. Sefako Makgatho was a teacher, politician and journalist born at Ga-Mphahlele, in the then Pietersburg district in Northern Transvaal (now Limpopo). President Sefako Makgatho dedicated his entire life © Impaq
