UNIT 1: Week 1 – 2 LEARNING AIMS: After learners have completed these lessons, they should be able to:         

Use spelling rules based on word visualisation and basic rules of double consonant spelling patterns. Understand the use of silent consonants. Understand the pronunciation of silent consonants within words. Understand abbreviations and the rules that accompany them, including contractions, initialisms and syllabic abbreviation. Identify three different types of sentences: simple sentences, complex sentences and compound-complex sentences. Recall different word types such as nouns, adjectives and pronouns. Use concord to determine whether the different parts of the sentences agree with each other. Use the simple tenses: simple past, simple present and simple future. Look at the context (surrounding text that gives you a general idea) to identify difficult words or words that you might be unsure of.

These lessons will recover some of the topics learners have worked on in previous grades as well as introduce relatively new topics. LESSON 1 1.1

Our first attempt at running a planet was a disaster; we will simply travel to another. If the aliens are unfriendly; our reputation will apparently precede us. The kids will completely mesmerise the teachers. Because of your parking violation, you will not enter your dog in the show tonight. The parade of adventurous men regularly stuns onlookers. Utter nonsense stealthily approaches at high velocity! The cranky old lady thoroughly prioritises her vegetable patch. Each night Jason patiently helps Greta with her paintings. On weekends Dave dutifully searches for all his missing socks. Swedish radishes meekly emerge from the frosty ground. The poet unnecessarily inspects the orange. The old man wholly enjoys taking leisurely strolls along the pier. The car columnist never, slipped on a banana peel before. The pompous elite usually stayed at their beach house for the summer. The fire was bravely extinguished before it spread. John slowly asked for a crust of bread. The lady casually wrote cheques. We regularly flossed while listening to old Broadway musical songs. The crab immovably clenched onto my car’s bumper. Dave reluctantly decorated his room with pixelated pictures. The cranky old lady cheerfully bought a bucket of roast chicken. Greta methodically bent the pipe cleaner to a 89° angle.
