Lesson 1: Urban vs rural

In this lesson, you will: • participate in a group discussion • do a listening comprehension activity • read a cartoon • answer questions on a cartoon • read a short story • answer questions on a short story • create your own advert • practise sentence structure • practise concord This term we focus on the theme “I am South African”. Here we will discover different issues that affect our everyday living: Rural versus urban living (where we discuss the different communities that we encounter), equality in democracy (where we discuss issues of equality within our democratic unit), news media (where we talk about different kinds of news media and how they affect our lives), buying local (where we discuss how important it is for us to buy locally produced foods and goods), and checking in! (where we go on journeys with a travel agent). In the first lesson (Rural versus urban), we will deal with how urban and rural living is translated into advertisements, a cartoon and a short story. Let’s allow these texts to show us how important both the rural and the urban are to us as a society, and that we cannot discredit one or the other as both contribute positively to our environment.

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Activity 1: Participate in a discussion Discussions are a way of interacting with your peers about a particular subject. When you engage in a group discussion you do various things: 1. Defend a position 2. Negotiate 3. Fill in the gaps 4. Share ideas and experiences 5. Encourage other members in your group to share their positions 6. Take turns 7. Initiate and sustain conversation 8. Show an understanding of concepts. Look at the advertisement below and listen while your facilitator reads the advert to you:

Begin a discussion on the advert. You will have 30 minutes to discuss the advert. Remember to make notes about the positions, ideas and experiences that were said by everyone in the discussion. When you discuss adverts consider the following aspects: • Tone of voice. This refers to the way something is said or written. Examples of tone of voice are warm, helpful, sophisticated or competent. • Pacing. This refers to the rate/speed at which something is said. • Emotive language use and manipulative language use. Emotive language is the choice of words that aim at getting an emotional response out of the reader/ listener. Manipulative language is the choice of words that an advertiser will use to make what is being advertised sound better and bigger than what it may actually be. Giving reasons why you should/must buy the product.

Font size. Larger font is used to draw attention and smaller font is used for important information relating to the advert. Body language. This is important to consider when discussing an advert as the positioning of a person or the people in the advert reveal the tone of the advert and is a non-verbal way of using manipulative language.

Abbreviations Identify the abbreviations used in the advert: ERE mes.

Activity 2: Do a listening comprehension activity A listening comprehension is a written text that is read to you. You are required to listen to the text and answer questions based on what you have heard. Listen carefully as your facilitator reads an advert about urban versus rural living. Your facilitator will read the advert twice. Make notes as your facilitator reads the text to you, then answer the questions below. When making notes during a listening comprehension, be sure to only write down the important points otherwise you will be wasting valuable listening time. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

What is the advert about? What manipulative techniques does Thoko use? What does Thoko say that makes you trust him? Would you call Thoko? Why? What is a personal chauffeur? Place the following sentence into the simple present tense: Thoko used to live in Diepsloot, a rural area. Look at the sentence: Hi, my name is Thoko. a) Name one noun in the sentence. b) What kind of noun is it? c) Write the sentence in the past tense. What are your experiences of riding in taxis?

Remember: The simple present tense is any action or situation that happens regularly, every day, always, sometimes, often, seldom. The simple past tense is any action that has happened already.

Activity 3: Read a cartoon A cartoon is a visual text that is created for enjoyment and entertainment. We enjoy cartoons because they make us laugh and show us the funnier side of situations. When you look at a cartoon, you need to look at what and how things are said or drawn that make you laugh. You need to be able to identify and discuss the purpose and message of the cartoon using the following techniques: Skimming and scanning You need to skim and scan the cartoon by quickly looking at what has been drawn and reading what has been written. For example, are there speech bubbles or is the text only within the cartoon? Careful and accurate skimming and scanning will help you make inferences about the meaning, the characters and the setting of the cartoon, will show you how punctuation and font have been used and will indicate the body language/interaction between the characters in the cartoon. Intensive reading This kind of reading will help you to identify the purpose and message of the cartoon. Every cartoon is written for a particular reason and has a particular message for its viewers. Making inferences To make inferences means to make assumptions based on facts. The facts in a cartoon are the words, the images and the way things are set out in the cartoon that will help you make assumptions on the message, meaning and purpose. Study the cartoon below:

What do you see in the cartoon? Is there any text in the cartoon? What are the features of the text? What part of speech is “population”? Look at the man walking down the street. What inferences (assumptions) can you make about who he is and what he does? What do the types of houses tell you about the area? What does the text and the picture tell you about the message of the poem? Why is the cartoon humorous? What does the man’s body language tell you about him? Evaluate (examine and judge) the meaning of the cartoon. Compare and contrast this rural house to what you think a city house looks like.

Activity 5: Read a short story A short story is a story that is generally between three and five pages long but can be shorter. Short stories usually deal with a few characters and concentrate on the mood rather than the plot. They also generally focus on one incident; have a single plot, a single setting, and a small number of characters all over a short period of time. Read the short story below twice. The short story is about a teenage girl who travels from her rural village to the big city for the Idols singing audition.

Vuzi’s experience of the big city ‘Wow’, said Vuzi as she looked at sky high buildings. ‘I have never seen anything like this before. This is spectacular!’ Vuzi couldn’t help but look skywards as she studied the tall stately buildings in wonder and amazement, thinking of how her life had changed and dreaming of how it may never be the same again. Vuzi was 16 years old when she entered the South African Idols singing competition. The only reason she entered was because a) her friends wouldn’t stop saying how great her voice was, and b) the auditions were to be held in the big city! And oh she had dreamed of seeing the big city ever since her parents bought a TV just four years ago. Having a TV completely changed Vuzi’s perception of her world. Vuzi was born in a very small community, populated only by 2 698 people. © Impaq

There was only one market owned by the same family for generations. Everybody had the same kind of house, with the same number of rooms, and the toilets were communal. There were stray dogs that roamed the area. But this was her home, and she loved it. She loved the hustle and bustle of the corner coffee shop where she waitressed. She loved being part of a community where she knew everybody’s name. So having a TV changed her perception of the ‘outside’ world. It was the TV that gave her a passion and desire to leave her community and see the Big City. On the morning of the auditions, Vuzi was so excited she couldn’t control herself! Her friends were just as excited and there was much giggling and shrieking. When Vuzi caught the taxi into the big city, she couldn’t help but think about what she had seen on TV. After a few hours, Vuzi arrived in the Big City, and was completely amazed by the sounds, the sights and people she saw. After a few minutes of walking around, Vuzi realised that she needed to ask someone for directions. But nobody would stop for her. She tried signalling for a taxi, but didn’t know the correct signs. Falling onto the pavement in despair, Vuzi burst out crying. Then she heard someone calling: “R10 for a ride to the Idols venue”. This was it, she thought. She stood in the queue for the taxi and dipped her hand into her handbag searching for her wallet, but couldn’t find it. She knew she had packed it. Activity 7: Create your own advert When creating your advert, consider the following features: 1. Correct format. This includes the length of your advert, making sure you consider where the advert will be seen – a magazine, newspaper, billboard or brochure. 2. Purpose. Consider the target market, who the advertisement is intended for, and why you are advertising. 3. Text features. Consider the sense your advertisement is appealing to (in other words which of the five senses is the advert targeting?), the layout and font size and the effectiveness of the choice of colour or lack thereof, and the register – the tone of your advert. 4. Language use. Is the language clichéd (overused expression), repetitive (using the same features, such as phrases like “you know” or “see what I mean”, figurative (using figures of speech), rhetorical (insincere), emotive (creating emotion in you), manipulative (persuading you to change), etc. Create an advert advertising the opening of a new restaurant in either a rural or urban area. Use the following tips to form some ideas. Brainstorm your advert. 1. Think of some of the best adverts you have seen in magazines, billboards or newspapers. 2. What were the features that stood out for you? Was it the colour, the words, the picture, the catchphrase or the register of the advert? 3. Think what kind of restaurant you would like to open: what food would it serve? What would your logo look like? 4. Think of some emotive language (words to pique your interest) you could use. 5. Play with some possible pictures you could put in the advert. Draft and edit your advert. 1. Write the text of your advert. 2. Check you have correct spelling and punctuation. Have you used emotive language? Does your picture and your advert go well together? Is it eye-catching? Does the advert make the reader want to visit the restaurant?

Write your advert neatly in your exercise book. Remember to check your spelling and pay attention to your spelling patterns. For example, i before e except after c. Your advert must be eye-catching and should keep the attention of the reader. It must create a desire for the reader to own the product or use the service. It must include the correct format, have a clear purpose, include the correct text features and language use.

Activity 8: Sentence structure There is a lot involved in sentence structure: there are phrases, clauses, subject-verb agreement and simple, complex and compound sentences. Throughout this year you will learn more about all of them in more detail. For the purpose of this lesson, we will focus on sentence structure in an advert. Adverts use simple, short, sentences. These types of sentences are catchy and the reader or listener is more likely to remember them and the advert. If longer, more complex sentences are used, the advert would become boring and would lose the interest of the reader or listener. Look at the advert below, and answer the questions that follow.

REMEDIAL ACTIVITY Comprehension Read the following extract and answer the questions that follow: Urban refers to areas relating to the city, and rural refers to areas relating to the country. When we talk about urban versus rural living, we are referring to the people, circumstances, and characteristics related to city life versus those related to country life. In urban areas, there is a wider range of choices people can make, for example, there is generally more access to a variety of foods, education, jobs, cultural and social events, making the standard of living higher than in a rural area where there is a lot less choice.
