Welcome to the Autumn 2020 edition of Focus, the quarterly magazine from Imperial Health Charity. It has already been an incredibly testing year for our hospitals - perhaps the most difficult the NHS has ever faced - and as we move towards the winter we know there are further challenges ahead. During this tough period, your continued support will be more important than ever as we strive to help our NHS colleagues and their patients get through the difficult winter months to come. It's a great source of comfort and pride to know that, with your invaluable support, we've already achieved so much in 2020. Turn to pages 4 and 5 to read about how we've been putting the money raised for our Covid-19 Relief Fund to good use, including a £1.7 million grant to pay for better facilities and wellbeing support for our NHS staff. Elsewhere in this edition you can read about the incredible fundraising efforts of the Move for Zoë team, who have raised £40,000 to support the intensive care unit at Charing Cross Hospital as well as the brand new 'hybrid' operating theatre that has opened at St Mary's thanks to our £1 million contribution. And don't miss the highlights from our fantastic Art in Focus exhibition, Thank You! You can read more on pages 8 and 9 or visit imperialcharity.org.uk/ thank-you to view our online gallery.

ABOVE: Titchner's colourful artworks have been installed in the Emergency Department at Charing Cross Hospital.

Titchner inspires colourful new look for hospital A&E C haring Cross Hospital’s emergency department has undergone an artistic makeover using words of comfort and inspiration to adorn its walls. We teamed up with staff from the hospital’s A&E department to commission Turner Prize-nominated artist Mark Titchner, whose work is celebrated for its exploration of language, to decorate the area’s bare walls with inspirational art.

“I was thinking of a kind of exotic dream landscape in contrast to the functional space of the building” Titchner created this bespoke work, entitled We Work Together, after conversations with hospital staff. He listened to their thoughts and feelings about working at the hospital, what they hope for patients and what it means to be part of the wider community in north west London. 2

Inspired by these conversations, Titchner included messages of hope, pride and unity against a soft and natural foliage background to contrast with the clinical environment of the hospital. “I wanted the artworks to be linked to the working medical life of the hospital and I felt this needed to be done in a visually pleasurable way,” said Titchner. “I was thinking of a kind of exotic dream landscape in contrast to the clean, functional space of the building. “My approach was going right back to the botanical starting point of modern medicine and connecting the natural world with the scientific one.” We Work Together features a series of positive, uplifting messages in large print along the department’s walkways and corridors. The short phrases include messages such as ‘I believe in we’, ‘Each for all’, ‘We are part of something greater than us’ and ‘We are what we do’.

Study highlights baby loss trauma A study funded by Imperial Health Charity suggests as many as one in 12 partners experience posttraumatic stress after a miscarriage. More than 100 couples who had lost their baby were surveyed for the research, which was led by Imperial College London. Researchers found that, one month after a pregnancy loss, one in 14 partners had experienced posttraumatic stress, rising to one in 12 after three months. The study was funded through our Research Fellowships programme, with support from the Imperial NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. It follows a previous study by the same team that examined the impact of pregnancy loss on mothers' mental health. Obstetrician Dr Jessica Farren, who led the research, said: "This study demonstrates there is a sizeable proportion of partners who experience severe psychological symptoms after pregnancy loss."

92% of NHS staff felt 'supported' Nine out of 10 NHS staff said they felt supported by Imperial Health Charity during the Covid-19 crisis. In a recent survey, 92% of staff who responded agreed our efforts had made them feel supported at the peak of the pandemic. At the height of the first wave we funded extra counselling sessions, faster wifi and provided resources for staff to set up temporary rest areas on their wards. We also delivered more than 170,000 meals and ran three pop-up shops, entirely free for NHS staff. Compared to last year's survey, there was a 29% increase in the proportion of staff who agreed our contribution makes their hospital a better place to work.

New ‘rest nest’ is a home from home for hospital staff

H

undreds of emergency department staff at Charing Cross Hospital are benefiting from a newly refurbished rest area, thanks to a £40,000 grant from Imperial Health Charity. With support from Taylor Howes Design, the refurbished space, dubbed the ‘rest nest’, includes new lighting, flooring and a kitchen. The emergency department is one of the busiest parts of the hospital - last year the department saw 350,000 patients - and staff often face extremeley challening situations. It’s therefore essential that staff have a calm and quiet space to relax and recharge between shifts in a comfortable environment.

Ffion Griffiths, Deputy General Manager for Urgent and Emergency Medicine at Charing Cross, said: “The new rest nest has really given everyone a relaxing space to get away from the hustle and bustle. Everyone was blown away when they saw the transformation come to life. It really is a world away from the old break room. “Staff are really grateful to Imperial Health Charity and Taylor Howes Design for supporting our staff room redevelopment and we would like to say a big thank you!” To find out more about our grants programme, you can visit imperialcharity.org.uk/grants

Staff to share Covid stories in story-telling workshops

N

HS staff have been given the chance to share their experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic as part of a digital storytelling project funded by Imperial Health Charity. In a series of workshops, staff from a wide range of hospital roles will each produce a short film telling their own personal stories. They will have the opportunity to talk about how the pandemic has affected their work, personal lives and relationships. As well as hearing from front-line staff, the workshops will explore

the experiences of staff who were redeployed to a new role, those who spent time shielding at home, and those from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds. The workshops will be run by Patient Voices - a company that specialises in helping healthcare organisations improve by unearthing staff and patient stories. Through our small grants programme, we’ve fully funded the digital story-telling project, which will take place over a series of interactive online workshops starting in November.

‘A lasting legacy’: our £1.7m grant to fund long-term staff support programme T

housands of hard-working NHS staff will benefit from improved facilities and better mental health support, thanks to a £1.7 million grant from Imperial Health Charity. A major programme of long-term staff support at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust will include refurbishments to hundreds of staff rooms, changing rooms, shower facilities and kitchens as well as extra counselling and mental health support. Planning work is already under way and the first round of improvements to staff spaces is due to begin in the autumn. The programme, intended as a “lasting legacy” to the efforts made by NHS staff during the Covid-19 pandemic, will benefit more than 14,000 staff across the Trust’s five London hospitals. We awarded the £1.7 million grant from our Covid-19 Relief Fund, which has raised almost £3 million since we launched the appeal in March - and you can turn to page 5 to take a look at how we’ve used these generous donations to support staff and patients over the last six months.

“This programme of support will serve as a lasting legacy to the extraordinary efforts staff have made to provide such outstanding care during the pandemic” Ian Lush, Chief Executive of Imperial Health Charity, said: “Over the last few months the NHS has faced the greatest challenge in its history and we’ve all been humbled by the courage, commitment and resolve that staff have shown throughout the pandemic. “I’m incredibly proud that we’ve been able to play such an important role in supporting the Trust during 4

this unprecendented period and we’re determined to do even more to help staff in the months ahead. “This major programme of support will serve as a lasting legacy to the extraordinary efforts that staff have made to provide such outstanding care during this time.” Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has been among the busiest NHS trusts in the country during the pandemic, caring for almost 2,000 patients with Covid-19. 700 members of staff were temporarily redeployed to new roles and the Trust increased its intensive care bed capacity by 110% (from 68 beds to 143 during the first wave) to cope with the sudden increase in cases. Since March, we’ve been providing essential support to aid the Trust’s Covid-19 response. At the beginning of the pandemic, we recruited more than 350 volunteers who helped

us distribute over 170,000 free meals to hospital wards and departments as well as running pop-up shops at Charing Cross, Hammersmith and St Mary’s hospitals entirely free for NHS staff. Thanks to the generosity of thousands of donors and supporters, we’ve also been able to fund a range of other projects supporting staff and patients, including: • free access to faster wifi across our hospitals • ‘virtual visiting’ tablet devices to help patients stay in touch with loved ones • extra counselling services for NHS staff to access emotional support • resources to help staff set up temporary rest areas on wards • emergency grants to support bereaved families of NHS staff who died during the pandemic. ver 100 supporters around the world have helped to raise £40,000 for the intensive care unit at Charing Cross Hospital after taking on a series of active challenges in memory of a friend. In August 2019, 26-year-old Zoë (right) suffered a brain haemorrhage as a result of previously undetected acute Leukaemia. She was admitted to the ICU at Charing Cross - but sadly she never recovered and died 25 days later. In the months that followed, Zoë’s close friends felt inspired to support the ICU and the incredible staff who cared for her in the weeks before she died.

“Fundraising was the most direct way for us to show our support when we were feeling so hopeless” They created ‘Move for Zoë’, an active fundraising team, and set an ambitious goal to raise £20,000 in her memory. 6

Alice Brady, co-creator of Move for Zoë, said: “When Zoë was in hospital we got in touch with Imperial Health Charity about fundraising as it felt like the most direct way to show our support when we were feeling so hopeless. “The regular updates we received from Zoë’s family showed how tirelessly the team was working to try to save her, so it was also a way of saying thank you to the NHS team, as well as hopefully being able to make a real difference with her legacy.” Coronavirus restrictions meant the group was unable to take part in

the RideLondon100 cycling event as planned. Undeterred, the team set upon encouraging friends and family to ‘move for Zoë’ by doing something active to raise funds on the weekend of 13 and 14 August 2020 - a year after Zoë was admitted to hospital. “Zoë was the loudest and most energetic person, and she was an avid gym bunny,” added Alice. “So ‘moving’ for her seemed like the most fitting way for us to all join together and remember her.” With contributions from around the world, the Move for Zoë team smashed their original target by raising £40,000 - double what they’d set out to achieve. “The amount we’ve raised has honestly blown us away and surpassed all of our expectations,” said Alice. “It’s testament to the amazing girl Zoë was and how loved she will always be. “We’re so happy to have raised so much in Zoë’s memory and we hope it will make a real difference to the ICU.” FOCUS • AUTUMN 2020

Bringing volunteers back into our hospitals safely to support NHS staff and their patients O

ur Crisis Response Volunteers made a huge contribution at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, helping us deliver over 170,000 meals to hospital workers, managing our free shops for NHS staff and carrying out many more essential tasks. Now we're working to make sure we can re-introduce volunteers back into day-to-day roles in our hospitals where it's safe and practical for us to do so. At the same time, we're also building up a reserve team of volunteers who will be ready and available to help our hospitals in the event of another emergency or a surge in Covid-19 cases.

“We're building up a reserve team of volunteers who will be ready to help our hospitals in an emergency" Sam Morris, Head of Volunteering at Imperial Health Charity, said: "We're extremely grateful to the hundreds of people who stepped forward to become Crisis Response Volunteers during the first wave of Covid-19. Without this incredible effort we would not have been able to provide such exceptional support to our hospitals during this time." ABOVE: Crisis Response Volunteer Jay Roome delivers meals to staff at Hammersmith Hospital BELOW: Vian Shathur talks about her experience as a Crisis Response Volunteer at Charing Cross Hospital.

Volunteer Q&A: Vian Shathur Why did you decide to volunteer? It was a chance to help during the pandemic. I'm a fit, young and healthy person - it seemed like a waste not trying to do anything. What did your role involve? Mostly distributing lunches and dinners to the Covid wards at

Charing Cross Hospital. Later on we managed the charity's free 'Haircuts for Heroes' service for NHS staff. What was your most memorable moment? One of my favourite memories from volunteering is how the catering staff made us feel so welcome. Despite the difficult situation, we still managed to laugh most days.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, creatives across the country helped us thank all our key workers with vibrant, visual art. Now we’ve brought some of our favourite works together in a very special exhibition.

T

hroughout the coronavirus pandemic, people all over the country have been using the power of art to display their gratitude and appreciation for the NHS. In fact, Covid-19 has triggered an explosion of creativity, from poetry and posters to paintings and photography. So, for our latest Art in Focus exhibition we decided to bring just a few of these stunning artworks together to help us celebrate and applaud our hospital heroes.

8

The exhibition - simply titled, Thank You! - is a joyous and hopeful collection of the most vibrant visual artwork around. “These past few months have seen the whole country come together in support of all our key workers and we’re delighted that Thank You! has managed to capture that spirit,” said Delphine Allier, Art Curator at Imperial Health Charity. “We’re immensely grateful to all the artists involved for their generosity in support of this project.”

Featuring works by the likes of Damien Hirst, Mark Titchner and Morag Myerscough among many others, the exhibition has brought these bright and colourful creations inside the hospital walls for the benefit of staff and patients. Initially on display at Charing Cross Hospital, Thank You! will move to Hammersmith and St Mary’s hospitals over the coming months so that thousands more can enjoy the artworks up close.

“We've seen the whole country come together and we're delighted that Thank You! has captured that spirit” For those people outside the hospitals, we’ve also made the collection available to view from FOCUS • AUTUMN 2020

the comfort of home in our special online gallery, which is accessible on our website. Among the artists featured in the exhibition is Sheffield-based designer Emily Williams, who created a series of poignant prints celebrating front-line workers. Other star names include former professional footballer David James who generously donated one of his paintings after being moved by the efforts of the NHS during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Morag Myerscough collaborated with In Good Company to create her colourful work, displaying a simple message: “Our superheroes. We love you.” “I wanted to show how much we appreciated all the work the frontline workers are doing,” explained Myerscough. “And hopefully to bring a bit of

colour and words of love that might make a tiny difference on their way to and from work.”

“I wanted to bring a bit of colour and words of love that might make a difference on their way to and from work” A total of 27 artists are featured in the exhibition, with 36 works making up this very special collection. Other notable names whose work appears include Anthony Burrill, Ruby Taylor, Erin Anaker, Adam Dant and Nathan Wyburn. ‘State-of-the-art’ hybrid theatre opens at St Mary’s thanks to £1 million grant A

new multi-million-pound operating theatre has now opened at St Mary’s Hospital, thanks to a funding boost from Imperial Health Charity. The new ‘hybrid’ endovascular theatre suite allows for complex surgery and high-quality imaging to take place in a single operating theatre. It means the hospital’s worldleading vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists can work together to carry out endovascular procedures without the need for open surgery. The theatre will transform care for patients with blood vessel problems and will also be used to treat those who have suffered mutliple trauma injuries, speeding up operations and reducing the amount of time patients spend in hospital. Last year we awarded a grant of £1 million towards the total £2.8 million cost of the project.

ABOVE and BELOW: The new ‘hybrid’ theatre at St Mary’s; Richard Gibbs, Clinical Director for General and Vascular Surgery

“We are bringing together a high-performing team with state-of-the-art technology to provide the very best treatment for our patients” Colin Bicknell, Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Head of Speciality for Vascular Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “This is a very valuable addition to our provision for patients. “It means we are bringing together a high-performing multi-disciplinary team and state-of-the-art technology to provide the very best treatment for our patients.” By performing both the surgical and imaging elements of procedures in the same space, the new theatre will minimise the risk of complications occurring during complex operations. 10

For example, surgeons will be able to use X-ray guidance to insert a stent through a tiny incision in a patient’s artery. This minimises the physical impact on the patient and is less painful than traditional methods.

Hayley Pannick, Director of Development at Imperial Health Charity, said: “We were delighted to be able to support this very important project, and it’s wonderful to see the theatre open and ready to provide vital treatment for patients." FOCUS • AUTUMN 2020

Collaborating with Imperial College’s Dr Aldo Faisal, Dr Bentley has set up an innovative project called ABCNEWS (Automated Behavioural Classification - National Early Warning Score). The principle is to help NHS staff use artificial intelligence to predict when a patient’s illness worsens, with handy digital monitors attached to the patient’s wrists and ankles allowing staff to track their movements. A pilot study at Charing Cross Hospital's Stroke Unit, showed that patients who spent more time in bed were also those who

Admission to intensive care is often a stressful event for a child as well as their parent or carer - not only during their time in hospital, but after they leave as well. Dr Simon Nadel, Clinical Lead for Children's Intensive Care, hopes to combat this problem by carrying out a study which involves introducing a booklet for families, full of helpful information to support their children. "If this study is successful it could be used in all children's intensive care units across the UK, affecting 20,000 children a year," said Dr Nadel. "It could produce a major benefit to the mental health of these families."
