Welcome to Focus, your quarterly magazine from Imperial Health Charity. The contribution that volunteers make to help our hospitals should never be underestimated. Day in and day out, at evenings and weekends, all year round, they freely give their time to support our work - providing a helping hand to hospital staff and making an enormous impact on the overall experience of care for patients and visitors. In my time at the charity, I've had the pleasure to meet hundreds of our remarkable volunteers - some of whom have been donating their time to assist the health service for more than 20 years. They bring not only their time but also their warmth, energy, enthusiasm and expertise, making it possible for our hospitals to offer that friendly, personal presence for patients and visitors who may be anxious or concerned about their visit. And that's not all. As well as enhancing the experience of care for our patients, volunteers also have a hugely positive impact on our NHS colleagues. Time and again, they tell us how much they value and appreciate the support of volunteers - and the incredible morale boost it gives them to see a familiar face signing in for their volunteering shift. I'd like to say a personal thank you to all those who gave their time to support our bulb-planting event at Charing Cross Hospital recently (pp 6-7). But also to each and every one of the 800+ volunteers who dedicate themselves to supporting our important work. Thank you.

Thank You! Appeal raises £32,000 for children's A&E
W Ravinder's fab fundraising dinner serves up vital funds Restaurateur, food writer and chef Ravinder Bhogal hosted a fabulous fundraising dinner and online auction, raising thousands of pounds to support our children's wards at St Mary’s Hospital. The dinner, hosted by Ravinder (pictured, above) and her husband Nadeem at her restaurant Jikoni, raised £15,950 for children's play equipment on the hospital's Grand Union ward as well as boosting our art and music therapy programmes for young patients. Ravinder was inspired to get involved as two of her friends’ children receive regular treatment at St Mary's for a rare condition. She said: “My two editors and dear friends coincidentally both have young children who suffer from Diamond Blackfan Anaemia, an extremely rare blood disorder which affects only a small number of patients in the UK. “It means they’ve needed blood transfusions every three weeks since birth and I’m in awe of their resilience and their brave children. “Our fundraisers at Jikoni always give back to our local community and St Mary’s is a vital part of it.” On the night, the team at Jikoni served a delicious vegetarian feast from Ravinder’s new cookbook Comfort & Joy. Ravinder also organised a successful online auction with a host of incredible prizes. We’re so grateful to Ravinder and the team at Jikoni for their fantastic fundraising, which will help us give every child the best possible experience of care at St Mary’s Hospital. Thank you!

e'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who kindly donated in support of our Winter Appeal this year. Since launching the appeal in November 2023, we've been staggered by your incredible generosity - which has helped us raise a remarkable £32,000 to support the children's A&E at St Mary's Hospital. Your donations will help us transform the busy A&E department into a more welcoming and relaxing space for families as well as equipping the team with brand new games, engaging activities and the latest interactive resources to keep children entertained in hospital.
These important improvements will help our fantastic NHS colleagues provide the best possible hospital experience for children who may be seriously ill or injured. We can't wait to share more with you once this vital work gets under way. Thank you!

Going green! Nomination for sustainability team at awards
W
e'd like to say a huge congratulations to the fantastic sustainability team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, who were nominated for a prestigious Health Service Journal award recently. We've been proud to support the team over the last two years, funding a range of projects that aim to reduce the carbon footprint of our hospitals and find more sustainable ways to provide care for our patients. Well done! 3

Family's fundraising efforts help us fund NICU equipment O
ne family's extraordinary fundraising feats have helped us provide extra support for the incredible hospital team who saved their daughter's life. First, Ian Cox completed the Battersea Park Half Marathon along with friends and family, raising over £28,000 to help us support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea Hospital. Ian and his wife Justine were inspired to give back to the hospital after their daughter Daisy was born prematurely there in 2021 - weighing only 850 grams. Now, Daisy's sister Matilda is planning to take on not one but two running events - the London Marathon and the Royal Parks Half
“Daisy received an amazing level of care from the incredible NICU staff, who were such a great support to our family” 4
Have you seen these beautiful artworks at Charing Cross? Next time you visit Charing Cross Hospital, why not take a moment to see these stunning artworks by Sumuyya Khader? Three large vinyl installations, along with a series of original paintings and limited-edition prints, are now on display throughout the hospital's ground floor corridors. An artist and illustrator based in Liverpool, Khader's work predominantly explores place and identity. These new installations celebrate the life-giving properties of plants through colourful depictions of luscious greenery. “Everything I do is about engaging in conversation through visual language,” said Khader. “Whether it's a print, painting or a commercial piece of illustration, I'm hoping to start a conversation that sometimes, verbally, I find difficult.” Sumuyya Khader, Commission for Charing Cross Hospital, 2023. Marathon - to continue the family's support for the hospital. “My baby sister Daisy was born on 2 December 2021, 14 weeks early,” explained Matilda. “Needless to say she didn't have the easiest start in life and spent her first couple of months in the NICU. “Fortunately she received an amazing level of care from the incredible staff, who were such a great support to our family during this difficult period. Daisy's now doing really well - a very happy, healthy and vocal two-year-old!” The family's fundraising has
already enabled us to buy a video laryngoscope - a special camera used to place a tube into a baby's breathing pipe - to care for babies who are struggling to breathe. We've also purchased reclining chairs for the unit, which give mothers and their babies the chance to bond through skin-to-skin contact, improve feeding and reduce the likelihood of infections. Volunteer 'responders' lend a helping hand during challenging winter period BELOW: Volunteers Jimmy and Israh give their time to help.
A
brand new team of volunteers has been providing extra support at Charing Cross Hospital this winter. Our volunteer 'responders' are ready and waiting to help with a wide range of non-clinical tasks - from collecting medication to picking up shopping for patients. The team is able to lighten the load for NHS staff and help the hospital respond to urgent tasks more quickly than normal. “We can transport blood test results, help at mealtimes, and so much more,” said one of our volunteers, Jules.
“If you look hard enough, you can see that hospitals are full of hope. Full of inspiration. Full of laughter” “People think hospitals can be scary and worrying places. But if you look hard enough you can see they're full of hope. Full of inspiration. Full of laughter.” FOCUS • WINTER 2024
Since introducing the role in October, our 'responder' volunteers have already given over 380 hours of their time to lend a hand. Following requests from NHS staff, they've been able to assist with hundreds of tasks, saving more than 26 hours of staff time. Amy Hill is a matron in the A&E department. She says our volunteers have made a big impact for her team. “We're so grateful for the support of the volunteers,” she said. “They've been so patient and so understanding. We really believe this is a great example of two of our key values - collaboration and kindness.”
Celebrating our incredible team of hospital volunteers! We were thrilled to see so many volunteers at our Thank You event in January to celebrate the incredible contributions they make at our hospitals. Dozens of volunteers and NHS staff joined us at No.11 Cavendish Square for an evening of food, drink, and fun, before we handed out special awards for those who have gone above and beyond for our patients. We were also joined by several NHS colleagues who expressed their gratitude for everything they do. Germaine, who received a Make a Difference Volunteering Award on the night, said: “It was quite unexpected but I’m happy and it makes you feel appreciated. “For me, this is about helping people, being there for them, and making an impact in their lives.” Last year, 569 volunteers gave a combined 18,000 hours of their time, helping to improve the hospital experience for more than 84,000 patients – the biggest year in the history of our volunteering programme. ozens of our fantastic supporters came together recently to help us take the first steps on the way to a bright and beautiful new entrance at Charing Cross Hospital. Green-fingered volunteers generously gave their time to plant over 9,000 daffodil bulbs that will be ready to burst into full bloom this coming spring. Members of staff from several of our local partners - including Tishman Speyer, BNP Paribas and Vodafone

- strapped on their gloves and got stuck in as part of our first ever corporate volunteering day. Led by expert garden designers Beth and Dario from Dario Pizzi Design, they dug holes, planted the bulbs and put the turf back in place, ready to blossom when the milder weather returns. Their wonderful efforts will help to add a splash of colour to the hospital grounds, providing a warm welcome for patients, visitors and staff at Charing Cross this year.
Like many of those taking part, Martyna, a Business Development Specialist at Vodafone, has a personal connection to Charing Cross Hospital. “I was treated here in 2011 and 2022,” she said. “I had a ruptured brain aneurysm and the doctors here saved my life. I decided to volunteer today just to give something back, and my colleagues also joined to support me. “The highlight for me was seeing how everyone came together to do this project. I think we worked really well together and I really enjoyed it!” Daffodils are the first perennial flowers to bloom after winter and will be the first that hospital visitors see in the spring. A huge thank you to everyone at BNP Paribas, CBRE, London Business School, Putney Rotary Club, Tishman Speyer, Visa, and Vodafone for taking part! FOCUS • WINTER 2024

SUPPORTING CREATIVITY IN HEALTHCARE AT OUR HOSPITALS
Personal stories inspire Keith's poem marking 75 years of NHS
ABOVE and RIGHT: Poet Keith Jarrett; artworks on display at Charing Cross Hospital as part of Held in Hope
A
commemorative poem inspired by the personal stories of staff working at our hospitals has been performed for the first time as part of celebrations marking 75 years of the NHS. Keith Jarrett’s poem, We Were One Of Many Voices, pays tribute to the extraordinary efforts of hospital workers and reflects on real-life experiences shared by staff at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Keith read the poem in front of a live audience at Manchester’s Aviva Studios recently as part of a special evening of artistic performances inspired by healthcare staff across the country. The performance marked the finale of a nationwide creative programme - Our National Health Stories celebrating the important role of the arts in healthcare during the 75th year of the NHS. Kate Pleydell, our Arts Engagement Curator, said: “Poetry and performance art is a wonderful way to connect with patients and NHS staff, so we were delighted to be part of this national project celebrating 8
the arts in healthcare. Last year Keith spent time speaking with staff at our hospitals, and their thoughts, feelings and reflections about the health service have inspired this beautiful poem. It’s a wonderful way to mark 75 years of our NHS.” Another of Keith’s poems, 'In Touch', was featured in the national programme of events alongside our Held in Hope exhibition, which is currently on display at Charing Cross, Hammersmith and St Mary’s hospitals. The exhibition showcases the work
of six artists who each explore the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on our hospitals and communities. Drawings and paintings by Thompson Hall and photographs by nurse Hannah Grace Deller feature in Held in Hope, alongside photographic collages by Bindi Vora, paintings by Susie Hamilton and silhouette portraits by Aida Silvestri. To watch Keith perform his poem and find out more about the national project, you can visit: ournhstories.org.uk
How your support can help us grow our hospital arts programme We provide a wide range of creative workshops and uplifting arts activities in clinical settings for everyone at our hospitals to enjoy. We also manage a museum-accredited art collection of over 2,000 works, many of which are on display around our hospitals. But our arts programme is funded by generous donations and we can only carry on this important work with your continued support. If you can, please make a donation to support our arts programme today. To donate, go to imperialcharity.org.uk/donate and enter the word 'arts' when you make your gift. Thank you!

St Mary's first to offer innovative new procedure for acid reflux Around one in five adults in the UK has problems with severe acid reflux - a disease that can lead to swallowing difficulties, coughing and asthma as well as teeth and gum damage. And until now treatment options available on the NHS have been limited, with a number of possible side effects for patients who undergo surgery. But now pioneering surgeons at St Mary's Hospital are using an innovative new procedure for the very first time. The new operation, which involves placing a small silicone device on the outside of the stomach, uses keyhole surgery - which means patients can go home and recover more quickly. The first four NHS patients to have the operation were treated at St Mary's in September 2023, with more patients treated in December. Those who have been treated so far are all making a good recovery and have been able to stop taking medication to control their symptoms. Mr Ahmed Ahmed, a Consultant in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, performed the recent procedures at St Mary's. He said: “I'm delighted that our patients are making a quick recovery and are in the process of getting back to normal. Considering the significant problems some of them had with swallowing their food before their operation, this is a very exciting outcome.”

Chelsea FC stars surprise kids with secret hospital visit Y
oung patients at St Mary's Hospital were given an early Christmas present thanks to a surprise visit from three famous footballers. We welcomed members of the Chelsea FC women’s team - Hannah Hampton, Aggie Beever-Jones and Zecira Musovic - to the hospital as they stopped to deliver gifts to children on the hospital’s Great Western ward recently. As well as having the chance to meet their football idols, the children also received Chelsea balls, scarves, drinks bottles and other gifts generously donated by the club. The visit was organised by Chelsea Foundation, which provides a range of education, health and wellbeing initiatives in the local community. We’re proud to be working in partnership with Chelsea Foundation and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust to support this important work, helping to tackle inequalities in our society that have a negative impact on people’s health. One of these initiatives is Bridging the Blues – a 12-week healthy lifestyle programme that includes physical activity, education and mental wellbeing support. Over the last year the programme
has helped dozens of patients with cardiac and respiratory conditions as well as those who are recovering from a minor stroke. You can see lots more pictures from the visit on our website. Just go to: imperialcharity.org.uk/latest-news 9
Serving up a boost for our hospital heroes this winter How you can leave your legacy and make an incredible gift for the future

housands of NHS staff working in our hospitals through the tough winter period have been able to enjoy an extra special treat, thanks to your support. During December and January, our fantastic volunteers gave their time to help us deliver bonus staff room supplies to our hard-working hospital heroes at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The breakroom boxes came packed to the brim with tea, coffee, snack bars and sweet treats, offering a timely boost to our incredible NHS colleagues. Our staff and volunteers rolled up their sleeves to pack the food and drink into boxes and deliver them to hundreds of hospital teams working in wards and departments across the Trust's hospitals in north west London.
“Thank you so much for these extra treats. This really made us feel acknowledged and appreciated” 10
Your generous donations have enabled us to provide these extra treats for healthcare professionals who are working hard to care for patients throughout another challenging winter for the NHS. In fact, it's just one one of the many things we're doing to support the wellbeing of NHS staff working at our hospitals. Earlier this year we funded a series of special events and activities to help hospital staff celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NHS. And we also opened two brand new lounge areas at Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital for staff to enjoy during their regular breaks.
At every important moment in our lives, the NHS is by our side. It's there to welcome us into the world, heal us when we're sick and take care of us as we grow older. The NHS is part of our life story. Leaving us a gift in your will is a wonderful way to help our hospitals - not only today but for generations to come. Thanks to the kindness and compassion of generous supporters like you, we'll continue to help our hospitals provide outstanding care for thousands of people and drive forward life-saving medical research. You might be inspired to say thank you after receiving exceptional care at one of our hospitals. Or you might be passionate about our NHS and motivated to make a real difference for decades to come. By leaving us a gift in your will, you'll be part of the next incredible chapter in its story. You can make a gift to a specific hospital, ward or department. eople experiencing homelessness this winter have been able to access extra support, thanks to your generous donations. Our £5,000 grant has enabled staff at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust to provide help for patients who are unhoused or at risk of homelessness. The extra funding meant our A&E departments could purchase a supply of high-quality warm winter clothing and footwear to give to patients when they leave hospital, reducing the risk of hypothermia during the coldest time of the year. Our grant also enabled hospital staff to provide food and sanitary products for those who may have fallen on hard times, as well as copies of birth certificates to help them move into temporary housing.

The project has proved so successful that the Trust has now secured NHS funding to continue providing support across all five of its hospitals for another three years. “At a stressful time in my life, when my physical and mental health was at an all-time low, a member of staff offered me not only empathy and compassion, but also helped me secure temporary accommodation,” one patient told us. “Their assistance and genuine concern for my welfare has had a very positive effect on my wellbeing and I now feel more able to face the challenges in the next stage of my life.” The borough of Westminster, home to St Mary's Hospital, is by far the most affected area of London, with over 2,000 rough sleepers. “Having the emergency cash fund is only a little thing but it has such a big impact,” said Liz Wordsworth, from St Mary's. “We were able to give a mobile phone to everyone we discharged who didn't have one, which meant they could keep in touch with their doctor.”

ECMO APPEAL Will you help us provide life-saving care for patients at Hammersmith Hospital?
We want to give patients in need of life-saving critical care the very best chance of survival. Will you help us? When a patient arrives in hospital with a very weak heart, we have to act fast. There might only be a matter of minutes for us to make the key decisions that will determine whether someone lives or dies. If the heart is too weak to pump enough blood around the body, an emergency life support machine like ECMO may be needed. ECMO stands for extra corporeal membrane oxygenation and it's a special machine that takes over the job of the heart and lungs in an emergency, giving the patient's organs time to rest and recover. In a life-threatening situation, it can keep a patient alive for days, weeks or even months. 12
Having an ECMO service at Hammersmith Hospital will enable us to provide better care for our local community. It will mean we can act quickly to save patients' lives right here, without the need to move them to another hospital in an emergency. If you can, please donate today to support Imperial Health Charity’s ECMO Appeal and help us bring this life-saving service to Hammersmith Hospital. Thank you!
