Coronation 56 Special Acknowledgements
SPECIAL THANKS go out to all dedicated and hard-working individuals who helped make our first virtual coronation come together. This has been a challenging and unusual year. None of this would have been possible without your passion, drive, and unwavering support. Thank you so much for helping the Imperial Council of San Francisco remain successful and move into the future!
A Letter from
Empress Mimi Osa My Dearest Community,
What a reign this has been! Never could I have ever imagined what this year would bring: new challenges, different opportunities, and evolutionary experiences. Had I known then what I know now, I don’t know if I would have had the same ambition and determination to run for Empress. I have so much respect and admiration for each and every one of our titleholders who trusted us to lead them before there were any signs of light at the end of the tunnel and who bravely stepped up to become the beacons of hope and inspiration for us all. Imperial Crown Prince Andrew Hirst MunRose, you’ve really put your heart into your role and been like a supportive big brother to your fellow titleholders. Thank you for all of your efforts and eagerness to help in every way possible. Imperial Crown Princess The One and Only Rexy, it’s incredible to see how our relationship has grown! You were always there whenever I needed you while also juggling other projects. You are an amazing woman I am honored to have in my life. Mr and Ms Golden Gate Ashle Blow and Bernadette, our very first virtual title winners. You each bring so much joy and creativity to everything you do. Thank you for upholding the wonderful legacy of the title, the eponym of our Court. Mr and Miss Gay San Francisco Sage Sanchez Munro and Linda Summers, y’all are wild! You created excitement and fun when we needed it most. Thank you for all of the energy and ambition you’ve shared with us. Mx Cowhand Foxxy Blue Snacks, our very first, of potentially many more, gender-neutral titles. Congratulations and thank you for being a pioneer of change in our organization. I look forward to witnessing the impact your legacy will have in our history. Though we didn’t get to do much “traditional traveling,” I had the great pleasure of “virtually visiting” a few Courts and connecting with some amazing Monarchs and Titleholders from across the system. Shoutouts (in no particular order): Keoki and Averianna of Hawaii; Manny and Vicky of Alameda; Mahaliah, Prince Sam, and Lucinda of Long Beach; Melody, Brandonn, and Maliyah of Fresno; Valerie of Dallas; Dani Blue of Boise; Coco LaChine, Antonio, Aaron, Graham, and Madelyn of New York; Virginia of LA/Hollywood; Miss Drew of Ontario…Sorry to anyone I’ve missed! Find me at a future Coronation, and I’ll give you an appreciative pat on the back, lol. Thank you to the Board for all your patience and guidance in adapting to and navigating this year. Last and most certainly not least, thank you to my beautiful chosen family. It’s all of your love and support that has kept me going through this reign. Kipper Snacks, Pearl Teese, Foxxy Blue Snacks, Rexy, Felipe, Anela Addams, Juicy Liu, Kimberly Michelle Westwood, Shima B. Valentine, Ehra Amaya, Malibu Boulevard, Kenzie B. Valentine, and of course Chris Ochoa. The Modest and Simply Graceful Empress,
Mimi Osa
Emperor William Bulkley’s Step-down Bedtime Story
Once Upon a Time… in a land not so far
away, a magical dream turned inside out for a newly crowned Emperor and Empress. The dream dissolved into an unrecognizable haze until after a long while, a new reality emerged. A glimmer of that once happy dream lived on in the hearts of the Emperor and Empress and their court. And that light is just visible, now, on the horizon. As we approach 14 months of living with Covid-19, it is both astonishing and challenging to look back over our 14-month reign. In the U.S., there have been nearly 580,000 deaths in just over one year. We are fortunate San Francisco was on the leading edge of containment.
“Nothing that grieves us can be called little; by the external laws of
proportion a child’s loss of a doll and a king’s
loss of a crown are events of the same size.”
- Mark Twain
We knew this year would be different. We did not know how or for how long. We knew that we had a commitment to our charities, to our community, to our court, and to ourselves. From the beginning, I have been dedicated to carrying on the great tradition of the Imperial Court of San Francisco. That purpose is even more vital after this unexpected year. The unexpected is what we have come to embrace. We were challenged in ways we could not have imagined. We each decided personally our level of engagement with our families and friends. It was obvious that with bars closed and travel restricted, our goal for the year would be less financially and more community focused. As we negotiated digital events and virtual meetings, I knew that participating in our local community would be one of the highest and best uses of my time. Since our Mr. and Miss Golden Gate days, Empress Mimi Osa and I have worked with various local LGBT communities. I am happy to have continued that mission this year with the Leather Community, Krewe de Kinque, GAPA, and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. One of the highlights of the year for me, among many, was being granted Sainthood by the Sisters.
belly, all else is poetry.”

While much of the world sheltered in place, many loosing their jobs, I helped with food distribution as a way to relieve some of the burden. I was honored to volunteer with both the San Francisco Marin Food Bank and Tenderloin Tessie’s Holiday Dinners distributing food to those in need. We kick-started our fundraising with Emperor Leandro Gonzalez and Prince Ben Wong, as we held two very successful Tamale Time events assembling, cooking and delivering, door to door, hundreds of tamales. Many of them were donated to front line workers or those in need.

—Allen Ginsburg
Activism was an unanticipated, yet essential, response to the many political awakenings in our county and community. As the tragic death of George Floyd reverberated throughout the nation, we stood in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter and Black Trans Lives Matter movements here in San Francisco. National politics could not have been more significant this year and being part of the Get Out The Vote activities with the Reverend Diana Wheeler and Sister Agnes was so important to me. This culminated with a grand celebration in the Castro for the election result announcement of our new President and the first female Vice President of the United States. But despite Kamala Harris becoming the first black and Asian Vice President, it did not stop the violence. I was saddened by the need, but determined by the necessity, to march with our friends at GAPA for the #StopAsianHate protests. And while “SF Pride” was canceled, I could not have been more proud to participate in Illuminate the Triangle, the People’s March, and Rainbow World Pride 2020. And yes, as our founder Mama Jose Sarria’s life work attests to, being out and proud is a political act.
I am very proud of our titleholders who form the core of our Imperial Court of the Majestic Golden Gate. To our first titleholder family, Brent, Sadie, Keaton, Olive, Joey, Tara, Bandit, and Bobbee, we went through this frustrating transition together. We navigated our personal boundaries and challenges as this pandemic surfaced. We love you and appreciate all that you did for our court during this time. I was honored to have Imperial Crown Prince Andrew Hirst MunRose and Imperial Crown Princess The One and Only, Rexy by our side this year. Your trailblazing talent and dedication is limitless. You are the future. I am so grateful to both our Mr. Golden Gate Ashle Blow and Miss Golden Gate Bernadette. You have proven yourselves to be leaders in our community with style, talent, and grace. You both have had long histories of community service in San Francisco, and you chose to be part of our Imperial Court. Thank you. Mr. Gay SF Sage Sanchez Munro and Miss Gay SF Linda Summer have been so inspiring. Your personal stories and creativity are unparalleled. We wish you both well in your future community service. One of the proudest accomplishments of our reign was the introduction of the first gender nonconforming title to the Imperial Court. Mx. Cowhand, Foxxy Blue Snacks, we could not have asked for a more accomplished artist to initiate this title.
From the moment I thought about running for Emperor I was fortunate to have incredible support. More than my court family, they are true friends. I am so grateful to Emperor Frankie Fernandez, Empress Saybeline, Emperor Leandro Gonzales, Emperor John Richard Daniel, Empress Emma Peel, Empress Cockatelia, Ben Wong, Mando Daniel, Ashle Blow, Bernadette Bohan, Prince Wolf, and my brilliant husband,
Gareth Gooch. You have all been incredibly encouraging on this difficult journey. I thank all the SF monarchs who came to my aid: Emperors JP Soto, Terrill Grimes, John Weber, Salvador Tovar, Nic Hunter, Grand Duke Fred Townsend, Empresses Marlena, Angelina, Snatch, Alexis Miranda, Donna Sachet, and Khmera Rouge. Mimi, thank you for co-reigning with me this year. Thank you for your hard work with our titleholders and for producing Snack Bar and other online events all year. We can be proud of what we accomplished under the circumstances. We’ll have many years to continue that service. We cannot accomplish our court goals on our own. I am grateful to all the many volunteers, donors, and supporters, too many to name, who contributed in so many ways to our court. I thank the hard work and dedication of the ICSF Board who navigated this year so cautiously for the well being of the community. They did their best to set our sights for smooth sailing. Thank you John, Stephen, Galilea, Cameron, Pollo, David, Armin, Misty, and Nathan. To our candidates for Emperor and Empress, David, Ehra, and Juanita, thank you for stepping up in this difficult time. As we begin to see the light on the horizon, I know you all will shine. You are all superstars and I am here for you for a laugh, or a cry, or for a helping hand.
Sooner or later… we must join the
diaspora, venturing beyond our
biological family
to find our logical one, the one that actually makes sense for us.”
—Armistead Maupin
And now, as our story comes to its twilight, we bask in the warm glow of our magical dream. We will be inspired to survive and to flourish with literature, music, art, nature, science, close friends, and chosen family. May the strength we garner from one another carry over to the next reign and beyond. Let us all continue to work hard, with friendly cooperation, for the life, love, and strength of our community for all the years to come, happily, ever after.
