WELCOME
Professor Maggie Dallman Vice-President (International) & Associate Provost (Academic Partnerships), Imperial College London
It is my pleasure to welcome you this evening on behalf of Imperial College London to the WE Innovate Final 2019, to hear from some of our top female student innovators and entrepreneurs. The long-standing gender inequality in many of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine) subjects as well as business is well known, and as a scientist it has been my passion to encourage other women to realise their potential and work towards change. Since its launch in 2014, I have enjoyed championing the programme both within and outside of Imperial, and seeing the community of female student entrepreneurs grow. Harnessing some of the best STEM talent and providing a platform to develop innovative ideas into enterprising projects, WE Innovate gives female Imperial students both the skills and confidence to develop into successful entrepreneurs.
WE Innovate —
I would like to extend our special thanks to BP, Santander Universities, Octopus Ventures and Engineers in Business Fellowships for their support of the programme this year, and to all the industry and business experts who have guided our talented female entrepreneurs as part of the WE Innovate programme. I wish you all an interesting and entertaining evening.

SPONSOR
Foreword We are delighted to be working with Imperial College London and the WE Innovate teams. As the world’s population continues to grow, innovation will bring new opportunities to billions of people. We see possibilities everywhere to help the world transition to a lower carbon future; university partnerships and venturing continue to support our ambition of advancing the energy transition.
This programme is, therefore, a natural fit on both fronts; in supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs through sharing our venturing know-how and in highlighting the power of building strong partnerships through greater diversity and inclusion.

Marine Valton Bio-F Solutions Eco-friendly bio-fertilisers based on natural microorganisms, with the aim to reduce damage to the environment and farmers’ costs, for more sustainable food production. Bio-F is developing eco-friendly bio-fertilisers based on algae: these organisms grow on the free supply of sunlight, atmospheric CO2 and nitrogen to directly provide the most important nutrients to plants, thereby replacing chemical fertilisers. Our product is more efficient, both in terms of land use and farmers’ workload, minimising their costs and increasing revenue. Our experiments showed a 242% increase in wheat production, greatly surpassing similar

products in the market. Contributing directly to the circular economy by cleaning wastewater, our product also drastically reduces fertiliser lost into the environment and their destructive consequences, while contributing to a more sustainable food supply chain. Mint Suchaya Mahuttanatan Cadget A bioplastic cast that is breathable, comfortable, easily applied by doctors and affordable. Cadget is a breathable and washable cast that’s less bulky but has the same strength as casts currently used.

The cast can be put around the fracture area to be perfectly molded to the soft surface before it becomes rigid. Using Cadget requires no additional casting equipment on the scene which halves the operation time.

Sophie Paisley-Marshall Orbit Materials Developing carbon-negative secondary raw construction materials from waste. Orbit Materials have developed carbonnegative construction materials from waste residues. Orbit Materials promotes a circular economy through the development of a treatment which successfully improves the quality of a waste product so that it can be repurposed within construction applications.
WE Innovate —
Furthermore, our technology reduces the strain on virgin raw materials whilst capturing carbon, thus making our residues carbon negative.

Martina Oliver Huidobro miCHIP A portable blood testing device which allows diagnosis for a wide range of diseases. The test detects small molecules called microRNA in the blood. These are powerful biomarkers for disease, but current tests require expensive laboratory equipment and require large amounts of blood to evaluate. The first roll out of our technology will focus on pancreatic cancer to tackle late diagnosis.

Lauren Dennis: In memoriam Lauren Dennis was an exceptional woman who commenced MSci Chemistry in October 2014. She was a finalist in our 2016 WE Innovate programme with her team Velox who developed a Livestock Test Disease Kit – an innovation that tackled Rift Valley Fever in cattle. Sadly in 2018 we lost Lauren to small bowel cancer. Lauren was an absolute champion of all things entrepreneurship. She was a huge supporter of students working in this area – so much so that she undertook an internship working with the Enterprise Lab team in its inaugural year. The team in the Lab have many happy memories of working with Lauren on events and her playlists are still our ‘go to’ music. Lauren was also an active member of the wider student community. She was Elected Wilkinson & Weeks Hall Representative; a Rectors
WE Innovate —
Ambassador; a member of Imperial College African Caribbean Society; took part in Imperial Horizons; played for the College netball team and took part in competitions such as FoNSMAD and ACT Now. Lauren’s enthusiasm for life was infectious. She will be remembered as an incredibly positive soul, thoughtful to the needs of others and loved by many. We hope this evening you will join us in remembering the impact of this incredible young woman.
