NEWS From Our Artistic Director A letter to members from Ginny Brown

D

ear Members, Implicit in the ISTD’s mission ‘to educate the public in the art of dancing’ is a responsibility to ensure that our work is accessible to all, regardless of (dis)ability, age, culture, gender or financial status. Broadening access to dance has been a guiding principle throughout my career and I am therefore delighted to announce a raft of new initiatives to ensure breadth of access to the ISTD.

BRIAN SLATER

Financial Bursaries

I am delighted to announce a raft of new initiatives to ensure breadth of access to the ISTD

In 2018 we are introducing new bursaries to support current and future dance teachers to develop their skills and qualifications, as part of the ISTD’s charitable purpose. Teachers will be able to apply for funds under three categories: 1. Initial teaching training (the new Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education and Dancesport Associate). Applicants will be able to apply for up to £5,000 to cover the cost of training and associated expenses (such as travel and any carer costs) 2. Higher teacher training (the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy). Applicants may apply for financial support of up to £2000 towards the cost of the course fees and associated expenses. This course is suitable for professional dancers and experienced teachers who wish to further their teaching skills and gain a government recognised teaching qualification (QTLS). The fund is already available for the next course, starting in September 2018, and applications are open until 15th April 2018. For further information see page 37 or contact the Education & Training Department: higherqualifications@ istd.org

3. Continuing professional development for international members. We understand that it can be logistically challenging and expensive for international members to attend ISTD training and that this can prevent our teachers from continuing their professional development. Therefore we are also introducing bursaries to support international members with the cost of travel to another country for intensive study periods with the ISTD Applications for the new bursaries will open in early 2018 and will be assessed on financial need, plus motivation to undertake training. Look out for further news to be posted on the website shortly. The ISTD also supports talented young dancers and their teachers through the Theatre Bursary Awards. ISTD young dancers are selected by each theatre faculty to compete for awards of up to £3,000 to support further training. Come and experience this exciting showcase first hand at the Quays Theatre, the Lowry, Manchester on 21st January 2018 (see page 24 for further details).

We are excited to be starting a disability dance research project

Disability Dance Research Project Additionally, we are excited to be starting a disability dance research project, which will run through 2018. Three ISTD teachers have been selected to partner with three disability dance specialists. During the year they will explore how ISTD syllabi can be adapted to suit the needs of their disabled learners. This process will be recorded and evaluated by Imogen Aujla, Senior Lecturer in Dance Science at the University of Bedfordshire. Thank you to all who responded to our recent questionnaire about including disabled learners in your classes. Responses revealed that whilst most teachers generally felt confident managing disabled learners’ needs in their classes, only 36% felt they had sufficient knowledge of disabilities. However, it was gratifying that 76% of respondents stated that they would like to make their classes more accessible to learners with differing disabilities. This project is a step in that direction and we plan to share the outcomes with members early in 2019.

Theatre Advanced 1 and 2 Analysis These initiatives to broaden access to ISTD training fit nicely with the new Theatre Advanced 1 and 2 Analysis exams (introduced in the last issue of DANCE). These will enable teachers to progress onto the Licentiate and Fellowship qualifications by providing an accessible route to gaining the Advanced 1 or 2. These new exams have been very well received and are now available for examination. Do you have experience of introducing ISTD syllabi to a new group? Perhaps you teach children in a state school, work with older adults, or teach recreational classes in a non-typical setting. If so, we would love to hear from you. To share your experience and photos, please email marketing@istd.org. Ginny Brown, Artistic Director

The ISTD Chair, Sue Passmore, shares her latest news

XS Latin at Dance Proms 2017

I

n this issue I am focusing on several examples of the extraordinary dedication and achievements of our members that I have encountered recently. The latter end of 2017 has had so many highlights, surprises and most importantly a reality check for potential growth in building our future. On Saturday 4th November the Blackpool Grand Finals was a triumph and without the tireless effort of the remarkable Nicky Miles might never have been possible. The Empire Ballroom had been forced to close for essential repair to the roof, however, miraculously it was encased with scaffolding and the organisers produced their usual highly prestigious event. The Dance Proms sadly faced the end of an era and this year’s performance was without doubt spectacular in diversity and quality of technical underpinning across the age spectrum. XS Latin, guest artists at Dance Proms, wrote the following: XS Latin coach and ISTD member David Mallabone was delighted to receive a call from Sue Passmore inviting the team to perform as guest artists at the prestigious 2017 Dance Proms. David was one of the founder members in 1997 before becoming part of the coaching team in 2005. The club continues to have close links with the Cambridge University Dancesport team with its current members being largely, although not solely, made up of current or former students at the University. XS Latin specialises in Latin Formation dancing, which includes the five International Latin dances and requires teams of couples to dance them in ever-changing patterns and with tight synchronization. The team is largely a competitive team and indeed, Sue and David first met to discuss the Dance Proms performance after the team had become the first British team in eight years to win the British Open Latin Formation Championship in Blackpool. However, the team also perform demonstrations and the show at the Royal Albert Hall promised to be an unforgettable one. Their current routine, based on the Broadway musical Wicked, XS Latin won the 2017 British Open Latin Formation Champions, British National Formation Champions and UK Adult Formation Champions.

Sam Rowe is studying for a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry. He had not danced before coming to Cambridge to study and has now danced ballroom and latin for two years. Sam said “after putting my books down in the evening, I devote most of my free time in the week to dance training and see it as a wonderful release from the rigours of academic work at such a high level.” Kirsty Davies is a former student of Experimental Psychology at Cambridge University. She now works for a medical research company as a Principal Clinical Research Scientist but continues to dance with XS Latin. Kirsty studied lots of dance forms as a child, including tap, ballet and disco but started her career in ballroom and latin on arriving at Cambridge. She said, “It was an honour to dance as guest act for Dance Proms on behalf of the ISTD. The setting and the lighting were utterly incredible and the whole evening inspired me to want to dance as well as I can. An evening I will never forget.” Thomas Nelson is currently studying Classics at Cambridge. He has been a member of XS Latin for three years and, in that time, has competed in Germany, Hungary, Austria and the Netherlands with the team. Reflecting on Dance Proms, Thomas said, “It was a real honour to perform in such a prestigious venue, and the atmosphere on the night was incredible: the applause of the audience, the building’s excellent acoustics and all the lighting effects made the show feel very special.” XS Latin is very grateful to Sue and the ISTD for the kind invitation to perform at such a spectacular event and to the wonderful audience for their incredible and enthusiastic reception. It is particularly special to be able to perform at an event where dance in all its forms is celebrated and honoured and the atmosphere and respect of all the performers backstage was testament to this. It is to be hoped that there will be opportunities to promote a new initiative at the Royal Albert Hall, which is without doubt our most important, iconic venue for recognising international music and dance for global ‘well-being’. The Malaysian Awards culminated a month of ISTD teaching and examinations. For both Ginny Brown, Artistic Director and

myself it was the first time to visit Kuala Lumpur. Although the schedule was tight we were able to observe different aspects of ISTD delivery throughout the short visit. The organisation, energy and dynamic at every level was outstanding. Throughout my career recognising potential skill and an indefinable quality of dance performance has been rewarded in many ways and this visit did not disappoint. Sherina Hamzah was working with two other young teachers led by Jackie Barnes on the Grade 5 Modern syllabli. This was the first class Ginny and I watched and after speaking to Sherina. After the class I asked her to share her profile with me for DANCE Magazine:

I have also spent a significant amount of time choreographing and entering groups for competitions locally. In 2014 and 2016 I was awarded the Mercedes Benz Award for Creative Excellence by the Director of the KUALA LUMPUR PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE. Other than that I spend my free time with my three children who are nine, six and two years old.

I have been teaching the ISTD Tap and Modern work since I opened my studio in 1999. I love teaching and absolutely enjoy all the work in both Tap and Modern. The design of the syllabus trains young dancers well, and at this stage I already have several students around the world finding jobs as teachers, dancers, or in various fields in the performing arts. My studio is now 18 years old and I am thankful that it is still thriving. I have 15 teachers working in my centre and about 500 students. This year I opened a new branch, which will serve as a suitable black box space for in-house productions. I obtained my Tap Fellowship in 2012 and two years later obtained my Modern Fellowship. It is my proudest achievement as a teacher, because I used to admire all the examiners and tutors coming to my country with the initials ‘FISTD’ and to be able to use that behind my name is, for lack of better words ‘awesome’.

#BestPractice: Insurance The final element in our series of articles about the new Professional Standards Scheme The ISTD Professional Standards Scheme covers four main areas that form the foundation of a good dance teacher: Child Protection Insurance Continuing Professional Development Health and Safety The scheme is being rolled-out in conjunction with our new-look DANCE-TEACHERS.ORG, a searchable directory where ISTD-qualified teachers can register their details and advertise their dance school business. For each completed element of the scheme you will receive a badge against your online profile, showing potential customers that you take your responsibilities in the dance studio seriously.

How do I get started? We recognise that some aspects of the Professional Standards Scheme may be unfamiliar. To help you get started, we have produced a series of articles, each focusing on one element. You can find previous articles in DANCE Magazine issues 481, 480 and 479. More detailed guidance and template documents for each professional standard are downloadable from the ISTD website at www. istd.org/courses-and-training/professional-standards-scheme.

Insurance – do I need it? Insuring your dance business is a legal requirement if you employ others but even a teacher operating solely can benefit from the financial protection that insurance provides against unforeseen events. What constitutes an unforeseen event? For example: • You or another suffers an injury on your school’s premises • A student blames you for their failing a prestigious audition and sues for the money paid for classes • Adverse weather damages your school and equipment, leaving you unable to teach for a number of weeks No single type of insurance will protect you against the full extent of potential claims, so it is important to take out a suitable range of policies. In most cases this can be done with a single insurer. Here we will briefly break down the most common types of insurance that a dance teacher should have, depending on their circumstances.

Mandatory Insurance If you employ another person for any kind of work at your school (dance teaching, reception duties, cleaning, etc) then you must take out Employer’s Liability Insurance. This type of insurance will protect you in the event of claims made against you by an employee for injury or illness allegedly caused by working at your school. It will also cover the associated legal costs of defending yourself against such a claim.

Recommended Insurance Public Liability Insurance provides protection for claims made against you by members of the public for injury or damage to their property. Professional Indemnity Insurance covers you in the event of alleged professional negligence (eg a student is injured while attempting a dance move and alleges you did not adequately demonstrate it); accidental breach of copyright or confidentiality; defamation or libel; and loss of money, data or items for which you are responsible. Buildings Insurance is important for anybody who owns their school’s premises and who wants to protect it against damage, adverse weather or natural disaster. Contents Insurance will provide cover for the contents of your premises against damage or theft. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot teach for an extended period of time (such as a result of natural disaster), then Business Interruption Insurance will protect you against the subsequent loss of income and the additional costs of getting yourself back on your feet, eg temporarily hiring an alternative venue and new equipment. If you become ill or injured, Health Insurance can help with the costs of diagnoses and treatment. In some cases it will also provide financial support during your time off from teaching.

What next? For our UK members, the ISTD has an on-going business relationship with Arthur J. Gallagher Insurance Brokers Limited (which is underwritten by AXA Insurance Limited). Arthur J. Gallagher provides policies for our teachers, adjudicators, examiners and dance school principals. Their insurance scheme offers the following standard essential covers: • Public Liability £5,000,000 (Higher limit available upon request) • Employer’s Liability £10,000,000 • Free legal helpline • Financial loss cover up to £25,000 It can also provide the following optional covers: • Personal accident for teachers and pupils • All risks for property and computers • Business Interruption • Money For more information, please contact the Arthur J. Gallagher team. Tel: 0345 073 8495, email: danny_king@ajg.com We advise our non-UK members to seek out trusted insurance providers in their respective countries. If you would like any further help or advice, the Education & Training Department is on hand at coursebookings@istd.org or on +44 (0)20 7377 1577. Alternatively, full guidance and template documents for all elements of the Professional Standards Scheme are downloadable from www.istd.org/courses-and-training. The National Youth Ballet of Great Britain The National Youth Ballet of Great Britain provides professional performance opportunities for talented students from across the UK

T

he main aim of the National Youth Ballet of Great Britain (NYB) is to offer talented young dancers, aged 8 to 18 years, an opportunity to work, rehearse and perform like a professional dance company. Members are recruited by audition and in the words of the NYB’s artistic director Mikah Smillie: “Without the teachers’ expertise we wouldn’t have the calibre of students to do it.” The NYB commissions bold new work, created by professional choreographers working within the industry, collaborating with musicians, designers, eminent composers, costumiers, and technicians to create a complete company experience. Many alumni have gone on to gain contracts with major ballet and musical theatre companies throughout the world. The NYB also encourages children from all walks of life to become involved with their outreach Fit to Dance programme in schools and the community. Find out more about the National Youth Ballet of Great Britain online at nationalyouthballet.org.

“We finished with a short question and answer session. It’s great to be able to share my experiences, both as a dancer and a choreographer, to inspire and encourage young dancers.”

Ruth Brill is a First Artist and choreographer with Birmingham Royal Ballet. She recently lectured at the ISTD’s Performance Masterclass on Tuesday 24th October 2017. Just after the class she said: “It was a pleasure teaching the NYB performance masterclass at the ISTD today. We had such fun! I wanted to give the young dancers an insight into working and rehearsing like a professional company. We focused on my recent work Steamboat Summer for the NYB. I taught an excerpt directly from the opening scene, followed by a more creative, task-based exercise. The workshop had an emphasis on character development, stagecraft, drama, personality and performance. “It was lovely to have teachers observing the session in such a positive way. I believe that the work that the NYB does complements and builds on the strong grounding that teachers are giving their students every week, in their schools. NYB offers something different – a chance to use this technique to develop through a performance experience. 10 DANCE ISSUE 482

The work that the NYB does builds on the strong grounding that teachers are giving their students every week

Wonderful, inspirational masterclass McAlpine Dance (Twitter feedback following Ruth’s ISTD Masterclass)

How did dancing with the National Youth Ballet of Great Britain (NYB) help you? The NYB offered me valuable performance experience and the chance to work as part of a company at a more demanding level, at a crucial stage of my development as a dancer. I was able to learn how a performance comes together and enjoy the excitement of building a production to a climax in a major theatre. The repertoire is wide and varied, giving me the chance to try different styles of dance and making me more versatile as a dancer. I was treated as a professional, expected to be resilient, independent and competent. At the same time, I was working with industry professionals, who support and work with the NYB, and who demonstrated skills that I would need in the future. I made many helpful contacts, some of whom I have kept in touch with throughout my career. Would you recommend teachers to encourage their gifted students (who may be looking at dance as a career) to apply to dance with the NYB? Yes! The NYB gives young students a wonderful experience and offers an opportunity to dance on a world stage, with professional

quality costumes, sets and production. High standards are expected of all participants. As a result, those involved have the chance to perform and grow, respond positively to the challenges and expand their knowledge of characterisation and dance styles. They can experience the importance of company spirit and feel what it’s like to be part of a closely-knit team. It is valuable to meet like-minded young people and establish new friendships. In all these ways, students can raise their self-esteem and confidence. How did you get into the NYB? I heard about the NYB through my local dance teacher and having seen advertisements in the dance magazines. I went to watch performances when I was very young and was inspired to apply in the future. Local auditions are held across the country. I got through the first round, then to the finals and casting auditions in London. There was an agonising wait to hear if I had been accepted. Then the letter came listing the parts I had been cast to dance in. The audition process itself was a useful learning experience.

DANCE News

What is the best thing about choreographing for the NYB? This is an exciting time for the NYB. Building on Jill Tookey’s legacy, Mikah Smillie is pushing the company forward and exploring exciting new possibilities. There is a great, vibrant atmosphere. I was given a great deal of freedom as a choreographer in the choice of music, casting and projection design. It is always a very satisfying experience to create an entirely new piece. The children were enthusiastic and receptive, working hard at every stage of the process. I was able to reconnect with established and successful alumni, several of whom I had worked with in the past. What is the most difficult aspect of this? We rehearsed and produced a 22-minute ballet in 10 days! It was an intense period of time, requiring fast and highly focused work. With precise preparation, this was successful because the momentum drove me forward. I’m also still a dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet, so I was juggling two jobs at the same time. What is the best thing about working with the Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB)? I moved to BRB to experience its extensive repertoire and work with David Bintley. While protecting and cherishing the important heritage of masters such as Macmillan and Ashton, BRB also develops new works. I enjoy working with David Bintley, a choreographer himself. He has given me the opportunity not only to dance a variety of wonderful roles, but also to choreograph. My first main stage commission for BRB, Arcadia has been performed on tour, at Birmingham Hippodrome and at Sadlers Wells. David Bintley has been supportive of my career and encourages me with each new challenge. As a patron of the NYB, he enabled me to make a piece this year, while continuing to dance with the company. 12 DANCE ISSUE 482

And the hardest thing? BRB have a very busy schedule with a great deal of repertoire. We have to learn quickly. We are a touring company, which can be tiring and challenging at times. Yet it all brings us closer together within the BRB family. And is there anything you’d like to add about the NYB that you think would be important for ISTD members to know? The NYB offers a chance for everyone involved to grow and develop. There are opportunities within all aspects of the company – dancers, costume, administration, stage management and design. Working with a new generation of choreographers, designers and dancers, the NYB is nurturing upcoming talent. Interview by Tamsin Moore

DANCE News

The NYB celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2017 with four performances of its Time in Motion programme at the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham, followed by a gala at Sadler’s Wells on 3rd September. I must declare a personal interest in the Company, for which I have taught and choreographed since 1990, and am now a Trustee. Even so, I can report without much fear of contradiction that the ’Wells gala presented a rejuvenated NYB fairly brimming with energy and optimism under the new artistic directorship of Mikah Smillie, who was appointed in 2016 following the death of its inspirational founder, Jill Tookey. Each year NYB recruits members by audition, with 75 dancers aged 13–18 forming the main Company, and 30 children

aged 8–12 in its junior ranks. During an intensive residential summer school, the season’s repertoire is created and rehearsed, costumes are fitted, set-changes and lighting plotted. There follows a short week of rehearsals and performances in a regional theatre, before the season ends with a gala, which is usually held at Sadler’s Wells. The NYB Beyond Ballet choreographic platform provides aspirant choreographers with rare access to the full resources of a large ballet company. After making a formal pitch of their proposed ballet, successful participants go on to engage with all aspects of production, from auditions and casting to collaboration with composers, designers, rehearsal directors, stage management and wardrobe. Although the Beyond Ballet initiative was officially introduced four years ago, it has developed over time in response to a rising tide of talent. Alumni Drew McOnie (now an Associate Artist of the Old Vic), Joanne Meredith and Andrew McNicol are among those who made some of their earliest professional work for the NYB. For the 2017 season, this opportunity was extended to three young choreographers, Ruth Brill, Arielle Smith and Louise Bennett. All are at very different stages of their professional careers.

Other items from the 2017 programme included NYB repertoire revivals, including Christopher Hampson’s fabulous Carnival (2000), and Jonathan Payn’s ever-popular Iken (2001). It is notable, however, that the 2017 NYB choreographic platform provided a welcome opportunity for female choreographers, who are still all too rare in ballet. “But the form has to move forward”, insists Ruth Brill, “and it is important for audiences and artists alike to take risks.” Brill, Smith and Bennett are among a new generation of artists willing and able to take those risks, while National Youth Ballet’s Beyond Ballet choreographic platform aims to help them to do just that. Look out for NYB’s return to the ’Wells in September 2018. Anna Meadmore The above article is based on an earlier piece Anna wrote for the July 2017 edition of Dancing Times.

ance Proms has provided ISTD and Royal Academy of Dance schools, teachers, and students a unique performance platform since 2010. This years’ event was bigger and better than ever before with schools from Austria, Italy, Malta, Vietnam and all across the UK joining together as a company to perform original pieces created by their teachers and choreographers in a variation of genres. From Ballet to Commercial, Contemporary to National, there really was something for everyone in this fantastic and eclectic performance.

The ISTD would like to congratulate all the dancers on their excellent performance skills, the teachers and choreographers for exceptional creativity; the guest acts Flawless and students from the Flawless Dance School, Nafisah Baba, and XS Latin for their inspiring work and finally all the members of the Dance Proms event team for all the hard work putting together another unforgettable experience.

INTERNATIONAL BARBARA SIMONS IN CANADA

O

n 13th June 2017, my students from the Pia Bouman School for Ballet and Creative Movement in Toronto took their National Dance Exam at Canada’s National Ballet School with examiner Barbara Simons. Zita and Amelia took their Gold Medal exam and Alaia and Sophie took their Silver Medal exam. For the project, Zita and Amelia made a traditional Austrian dessert called Kaiserschmarrin and created a collage about Russia. Alaia talked about Portuguese custard tarts and Sophie made a collage about Italy. Also, four dancers took their Folk Dance study exams. They presented three dances from England. Willa and Sarah baked English scones and Audrey and Emily made English rice pudding. We all had a wonderful time and it was pleasure to have Barbara Simons. Congratulations to all my students! Library News ISTD Librarian, Sarah Jardine-Willoughby reports NEW Library Catalogue

An Unusual Portrait of Cyril Beaumont

I am in the process of entering details of all the library books onto an online database, Libib.com, which is searchable via the web. There is a link to the catalogue from the Library webpage on the main ISTD site. I am making sure every book will be listed with the correct details on the database with a photograph of the book, usually of the front cover or title page. The shelf mark is listed on the catalogue as call#: = dewey number. I am also trying to include a note with the copy information if our copy is a presentation copy or sometimes the previous owner. It is possible to download a Libib.com app for a smart phone or tablet to be able to check the catalogue at any time. I am checking the entries against our old ACCESS database by title and have reached “L”. Most of our new books are already on the database and I have to just add the #call mark information. The main work involved is entering most of the older books from scratch, also adding photographs to many entries. I will update this information when it is complete.

Many photographs of Cyril Beaumont portray him as an older man, including the portrait behind my desk in the library (image 1). So, I was intrigued to find an unusual portrait of him (image 2), which is a drawing that was published in 1916 in a magazine called Drawing: a paper devoted to art as a national asset. It was published in the issue for October 1916, No. 18, Volume 3. The drawing accompanies an article about his bookshop. The drawing makes Cyril Beaumont look like a 1950s rebel, smoking a cigarette, and was not reproduced in his autobiography, Bookseller at the Ballet: Memoirs 1891 – 1929, or in the biography by Katherine Sorley Walker. The closest one is the drawing by Randolph Schwabe (image 3) used on the cover of Bookseller at the Ballet but in this picture Cyril Beaumont is more formal.

Donation I am delighted to report we received a large donation of books from Marion Roberts, and I was pleased to find many books to add to the library stock, most of which have now been catalogued on the databases.

The 2017 Cyril Beaumont Scholarship

I

was delighted to have Deborah Weiss as my co-adjudicator at this year’s Cyril Beaumont Scholarship, held at the KS Dance Studios in Warrington on 12th October. Deborah was a student when I was on the staff at White Lodge and we were both delighted to be able to reach total agreement on awarding this prestigious scholarship to Chloe Howarth. As well as demonstrating a strong

technique, Chloe danced elegantly and musically, with a particularly pleasing use of the Cecchetti port de bras. The runner-up, Danielle Burgess demonstrated excellent dynamics and very strong elevation. The Mary-Jane Duckworth Award for a promising male student went to Patrick Gill for the intelligent way in which he tackled some complex enchaînements. Commendations for musicality and dynamics were given to Zoe Kelsall and Susanna Murphy. The combination of Gillian Hurst’s excellent teaching and John Taggart’s sensitive musical accompaniment ensured that the 16 students were all able to perform to a commendably high standard. I would, however, like to make one practical suggestion concerning the balance of class work at future competitions: a shorter barre could allow more time for the students to perform in smaller groups, enabling them to demonstrate the important ability to pick up and perform complex unseen exercises to the best of their ability. The numerous distinguished guests included David Lloyd and Brenda Last OBE, KS Dance patrons; Elisabeth Swan, Chair of the Cecchetti Trust; Ginny Brown, Artistic Director ISTD; Kay Ball, Chair of the Theatre Faculty Board and Catherine Hutchon, Chair of the Cecchetti Society Classical Ballet Faculty. Kate Simmons and her friendly and efficient staff ensured that we all enjoyed a truly warm welcome. Richard Glasstone

The Cecchetti Children’s Awards took place on Sunday 5th November at Westminster Kingsway College Theatre. The day was organised by the Cecchetti Group Chair, Elizabeth James and a splendid support team of volunteers working with organisers, Lisa Hunter, Tanith Waldie and Sarah Bradshaw and Stage Manager Rachel Gordon and David Marley Technical Support. Let’s Make a Competition was presented by Tanith Waldie with pianist Mike Silk accompanying and although it is not judged, Elisabeth Swan, the Adjudicator for the afternoon was able to give encouragement and advice to children who may wish to go on to take part in a competition. The Children’s Award work was presented by Sarah Bradshaw and accompanied by Evie Preston. Miss Swan warmly congratulated all those taking part and their teachers for their support. The deserving winners are listed on the next page.

Our focus then shifted to an exploration of teaching practice, starting with a session

The course ended with some time spent reviewing the content and structure of the Cecchetti teaching examinations, with each of us hugely inspired by what we had learned during the day, and excited to continue our training. Cecchetti Vocational Awards winners with centre adjudicators Jessica Clarke and David Nixon

Cecchetti Classical Ballet Vocational Awards 2017 It was most encouraging that as many as 56 students, from a selection of 9 Vocational Ballet Courses, had registered to participate in the 2017 Cecchetti Vocational Awards, held on Sunday 19th November at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre’s Lilian Baylis Studio. However, the time it takes to assess each applicant fairly does regularly present the organisers of this event with some logistical problems. Initially, the applicants were divided into three groups, each group to be seen in an unset classical ballet class. These classes were carefully structured by Shannon Parker and sympathetically accompanied by Olga Mazour, Ms Parker’s often challenging enchaînements were confidently tackled by the students. Inevitably the setting and teaching of each exercise took up most of the time allotted to each class. This left very little time to assess each student individually. Personally, I would have liked to see each candidate perform a series of grands jetés en tournant – there is no surer way of seeing whether that student understands the dynamic connection between the Cecchetti ports de bras and allegro work. None of this could have made it easy for our two distinguished adjudicators, David Nixon OBE and Jessica Clarke to reach their verdicts; but I was certainly most impressed by the perspicacity of their choices as well as by the wise practical advice they gave to the students before the names of the winners were announced. In the Fewster Cecchetti Scholarship section of the Vocational Awards, No 8 Serina Faull and No 13 Ai Sa Mok, both from Elmhurst Ballet School, received Commendations. The Fewster Award for a promising male dancer was No 46 Basil James whilst the promising female award winner was No 14 Natalia Watt – both from Tring Park School. The runner-up to the Fewster Scholarship was No 5 Georgia Smart from Elmhurst Ballet School and the winner was No 35 Molly Hall from English National Ballet School.

adjudicators’ job was certainly not an easy one, but the winners were very deserving of their success. The Awards weekend is a key event in the Cecchetti Faculty calendar and relies on the generous voluntary help of so many colleagues, both in the preparation for the event and on the weekend itself. The members of the Cecchetti Group and their Chair, Elizabeth James and Awards Organiser, Lisa Hunter are the key to this. Also vital to the success of the event is the support of all the teachers who prepare their students. I am extremely grateful for the huge amounts of time, energy and commitment each gives to realise the Awards and make this exceptional performance opportunity available to so many young dancers. The Cecchetti Mabel Ryan Awards were held at the Lillian Baylis Studio, Sadler’s Wells Theatre on the 18th and 19th November. The weekend began with the Lower Junior, Junior and Middle Mabel Ryan Awards and it was a pleasure to welcome Brenda Garratt-Glassman and Lucille Briance as the adjudicators. Sarah Wells’ encouraging presentation of the children’s work on stage, accompanied by Maria Milanova’s sympathetic playing, allowed the youngest dancers to enjoy the competition. On Sunday the adjudicators of the Senior Award were Jessica Clarke and Mary Stassinopoulos, who both bought their expertise and warmth to their assessment of the dancers. Carolyn Parker’s supportive presentation and Olga Mazour’s inspiring music enabled the senior competitors to show their best work. CLASSICAL GREEK DANCE

Ruby Ginner Awards 2017 A showcase of the best Classical Greek dance has to offer From Penny Childs

From Jill Baldock

The Ruby Ginner Awards were held on Sunday 12th November 2017 in our new location, The Venue MK, Milton Keynes, which created an extra buzz of excitement. Over 150 competitors in six classes were put through their paces during the day. Teachers Donna Card, Lucy Pohl, Alison Seddon and Carol Vasko set some challenging and innovative sequences. The music, provided by pianist John Hoskins enhanced the competitors’ animated and inspired performances. Our adjudicator Jill Baldock was treated to the best Classical Greek dance has to offer and I was privileged to assist her with the special awards throughout the day. As a passionate advocate of Classical Greek it is always a pleasure to see how diverse the genre is. The Ruby Ginner Awards is a wonderful opportunity to showcase this and observe how it produces such musical and expressive dancers. Congratulations must go to the teachers for the high standard of technique shown in all age groups, which gave us adjudicators some very difficult decisions to make. With my organiser’s hat on, my thanks must go to our Faculty Chair, Kay Ball and all those who helped to make such a special and happy day. Penny Childs

What an absolute pleasure to be surrounded by my fellow Greek Dance lovers. Each class was produced with imaginative input, from bugs and viruses to seaweed and crackling fires. The dancers were given the opportunity to contribute to the creative expression and deliver with delightful techniques. I was able to witness the development of the techniques from the tiniest 6 year old dancer through to the powerful 18 year old senior, all being honed into becoming the ‘complete’ dancer. The class work was produced and directed by exquisite teachers, inspiring the dancers’ imagination. To see the musicality in abundance was a particular joy for me, knowing that the dancer still had room in their lives to be artistically inventive. All underpinned by the excellence of John Hoskins on piano. Who could not be inspired by a live musician? Thank you to all who contributed to this very special day. Anaya Bolar What has the ISTD Bursary Award done for you?

Being selected for commendation boosted my confidence and pushed me to pursue what I really wanted

Anaya Bolar at the 2016 ISTD Bursary Awards

A

s we approach the ISTD Bursary Awards 2018, we caught up with Anaya Bolar to find out how she’s getting on with her training, just a year after achieving a commendation in the 2016 Bursary Awards. She is currently in the final year of her Sports Medicine degree at Coventry University, but returns each weekend to Birmingham to continue her dance training and teaching. Since her success at the Bursary Awards in 2016, Anaya has been determined to pursue dance professionally, a venture that still faces challenges in the classical Indian dance sector. The significant monetary prize that she received, however, has stood her in good stead. “It has given me the headspace to just move forwards with my training,” she related to me. She has saved the £2,000 prize money for professional training in India this December, where she hopes

to learn from a variety of teachers and also invest in Carnatic music training, which is essential for the holistic understanding of Bharatanatyam. I asked her about the experience of participating in the Bursary Awards, to which she gave me some colourful anecdotes. It was not a breeze, she recalls. When she arrived for the competition, she found herself surrounded by contemporary and ballet dancers who seemed extraordinary and virtuosic, leaping across the warm-up space effortlessly. “They were all doing splits and whatnot, and there I was in my corner, trying to recite my mantra.” However, her Bharatanatyam skills shone through for the judging panel and she was selected for the senior commendation, which she says has been life-changing.

The atmosphere backstage at the Bursary Awards was lovely and we were cheering each other on SIMON RICHARDSON

Not only has it given her the finances to access professional training, she has also made a good friend and collaborator in Kaine Ward, who danced as her duet partner in a contemporary piece for BBC Young Dancer. “The atmosphere backstage at the Bursary Awards was lovely and we were cheering each other on,” she recalls. “I knew as soon as I saw Kaine dance that I had to collaborate with him.” The duo was choreographed by contemporary dancer-choreographer Subhash Gorania, and the piece received substantial attention. Kaine has gone to the Juilliard School in New York and Anaya is delighted for him and their future friendship. Since their collaboration, she has also conducted a Bharatanatyam workshop at his old school, Tring Park School for Performing Arts. The Bursary Awards have undoubtedly opened many doors for Anaya, and the Classical Indian Dance Faculty is excited to be hosting the next round of selections for the 2018 Bursary Awards, with optimistic hope that another Indian Classical Dancer can go on to shine. Dance Exchange 2017

A varied programme of excellent lectures

Above: Alex Costi Right: Vernon Kemp Above: Lisa Ambrose

MORNING BY JACQUI NORTON The 29th DFR Dance Exchange was held at a new venue, The Elgiva Theatre on Sunday 17th September 2017. First up was the warm-up lecture by Lisa Ambrose, which proved how very interesting a warm-up can be when carefully constructed and beautifully performed. The next lecture was on Freestyle medal work, by Alex Costi assisted by two of her pupils. The first routine demonstrated was for Bronze level, and then Alex added some additional figures suitable for Silver level, with an optional spin section. Both routines were well performed with attractive arm and leg lines showing expressive presentation and good quality of work throughout. Samantha Vale led the lecture assisted by the DFR Street Team then taught three routines covering Bronze, Silver and Gold levels for the Street Dance medal test syllabus. Samantha is a highly experienced, knowledgeable and talented Street Dance teacher. She was awarded the Carl Alan Street Dance Teachers’ Award for 2016. The tremendous amount of work that was taught with Samantha’s enthusiasm and energy proved to be a highly successful and very useful lecture for everyone. The Rock ‘n’ Roll genre is hugely popular with every age category and this style was presented by Stacey Edwards, who has had tremendous success in the various competition levels and medal examinations with her highly trained pupils. She gave us an insight into her foundation programme. The next subject to be covered was competition work by Stefanie Watts who has had a great deal of experience in this field. Primarily, Stefanie prefers, “substance over speed”. This interesting lecture covered many aspects for solo and couples’ competition work, and also included some helpful points with regard to etiquette at competitions. It was well received by all the teachers.

Next up was the eagerly awaited question and answer lecture by ISTD examiner, Vernon Kemp. Vernon has a special way of making this type of lecture interesting to help teachers keep up to date with syllabus requirements. Vernon also confirmed that there is now a special examination available until 31st December 2018, using the code IDF in the Faculty column and PSL in the Level column on timetables, for the Peggy Spencer Legend Award. The last morning lecture, Party, Party, Party! was presented by Liz Young, who is accustomed to entertaining everyone at Blackpool events. Liz immediately invited everyone onto the floor to participate and, with her tremendous personality, began by teaching excellent, lively party routines for use as solo and pairs routines with a variety of foot actions and good body movement including shimmies. This is one of the most humorous lectures I have ever attended and, with Liz’s dynamic approach to teaching in a fun way, created a very happy atmosphere. Jacqui Norton

Next up, showing four different routines, all with different rhythms and styles, there was so much content in this lecture by Suzanne Hammond – always remembering to think outside the box – a valuable lecture, and always a pleasure to watch, a fabulous end to our day. Finally, Lisa Ambrose had everyone up one last time for cooldown. A fun party circle for the final mobiliser left everyone in great spirits at the end of another fabulous day of lectures.

AFTERNOON BY MICHELLE ARNELL

We began the afternoon with more work from Samantha Vale and the DFR Street Dance Teaching Team, this time concentrating on Street warm-ups. Sam completed her lecture with a fun social circle exercise, great for use at the end of a class – another valuable lecture from a very knowledgeable teacher. Richard Marcel then brought everyone up onto the floor with a groovy warm-up to introduce his Latin/Reggae inspired routine. This was action packed and danced with power and great performance skills from his demonstrators. The movements used were raw, fresh and very commercial. The use of hair and clothing as part of it made his routine unique. I’m sure we will be seeing Richard back again in the future. We then welcomed Mandy Peace to the floor with her teaching techniques. The movements used in all the exercises were incorporated into a routine, turning technique into suitable class routines – some very useful tips for teachers to take back to their pupils.

Yvonne Taylor-Hill Hands Over the Key After being part of the Disco/ Freestyle/Rock ‘n’ Roll Faculty since its conception and Chair for 21 years, I decided in this election year, it was time to hand over the helm of what I had affectionately named the Titanic. It was so called because the Faculty was the biggest under the Dancesport Yvonne Taylor-Hill Faculties’ Board, carrying a cargo of four genres – Freestyle, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Country Western and Street Dance. On reflection, it has been a wonderful time in my dancing career. As a young student, I always loved debating, so standing for a committee would provide an opportunity for harmonious discussion with like-minded, dedicated colleagues to find a solution or compromise. Sometimes the debate would be feisty but always pleasurable especially when the outcome would benefit our very loyal membership – to be involved with the future of both dance and the Society was a challenging way forward. While Chair I was fortunate to serve on ISTD Council and the Benevolent Fund Committee as well as many other sub-committees. How lucky was I to be mentored by Elizabeth Romain, who I trained, coached and assisted for many years, as well as Peggy Spencer, Anne Lingard, Sydney Francis and the lovely Joyce Percy. I can say (without being pretentious) that I am so proud of everything the DFR Faculty Committee has achieved under my watch. This could only have been achieved through teamwork and spirit from the crew, an excellent Faculty Secretary and Co-ordinator and dedicated Vice-Chairs, especially Paul Streatfield who has been a marvellous friend, giving me huge support and advice during calm, turbulent and sad times. On reflection – what fond memories do I leave with? Leaving a legacy – that through my Slow Dance lectures, Slow Dance became compulsory within the syllabus, of formulating professional syllabi and of course the grades and Intermediate syllabus, all endorsing the foundations of secure technique about which I am so passionate, our 25th anniversary celebrations and by no

means least – the banner parades at Grand Finals which never cease to bring on a tear and a gasp of breath. In closing, huge thanks to you all for your lovely words, messages, cards and gifts. It is wonderful to feel so appreciated and my late husband Peter would be so chuffed and proud of me. I am not retiring. I am still teaching full time and examining, which I love. The Dancesport Faculties’ Board know that the ISTD ‘runs through my veins’. I am merely taking the opportunity and time to ‘smell the roses’, or should I say, my very large garden. I am only a phone call or email away. Through the love of dance, I look forward to seeing you at many events in the coming years. Yvonne Taylor-Hill

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM YOUR NEW CHAIR The last term of 2016 saw some changes within the DFR Faculty Committee. I was honoured to be elected Chair of the new committee, which began in September 2017. However, the biggest change is that Yvonne Taylor Hill, Patsy Graham and Rachel Wadey have decided to stand down from committee work. I would very much like to thank these three for being so dedicated to their roles within the Faculty and for giving up so much of their precious time to ISTD business. I for one enjoyed every meeting working alongside them and learning from their expertise. I’m sure you will join me in wishing them much happiness for the future and in the knowledge that the new committee will continue to uphold all the amazing work that has been established during their time. I would like to introduce the new committee. I have two valuable Vice Chairs, Maria Howse and Nigel Kirk, both examiners with many years of experience on this Faculty along with committee members Jonathan Reed and newly appointed Julia Westlake and Michelle Arnell, and Faculty Co-ordinator, Penny Childs. Together we make a great team of busy, active teachers. With forward thinking and planning I know this committee will continue to lead the way for a bright and healthy future for our members in Freestyle, Rock ’n’ Roll, Street Dance and Country and Western. On behalf of the DFR Faculty Committee I would sincerely like to wish you and your families a prosperous, healthy and happy New Year. SET DANCE EVENT REPORT BY KIRSTY WARREN Dancers from all over the country have been competing all year for a place to dance at the prestigious Grand Finals. Finally, the long-awaited 8th October 2017 was here. On arrival the queue outside the Guildford Spectrum was full of excited dancers and enthusiastic supporters, all with a keen eagerness for the doors to open. Once inside everyone was buzzing. The Set Dance Banner Parade started at 9:30am, when Nicky Miles introduced all 40 schools in the Set Dance event. The adjudicating panel for this event was introduced: Suzanne Hammond, Maria Howse, Nigel Kirk, Jonathan Reed, Paul Streatfield, Yvonne Taylor-Hill and Julia Westlake. Paul Streatfield, the new DFR Faculty Chair, congratulated all competitors for making it to GFD, wishing them every success for the day and announced that they were all winners. He also expressed his thanks and appreciation to the DFR Faculty Events Co-ordinator, Patsy Graham, for all her hard work and commitment over the last 20 years after she had made the difficult decision to retire.

The adjudicators had an exceptionally hard job to pick the finalists. I was blown away by the standard in all the finals, which was truly outstanding with dancers of the highest calibre demonstrating breath-taking routines. What a spectacular event with well-deserved winners. Congratulations to all the Set Dance contributors and teachers for all their input and hard work. Well done to each one of you. Kirsty Warren

The Slow dancers were radiant and performed their routines with beautiful emotion, resistance and gracefulness. The Street style competitors were fantastic, performing with superb attack and attitude and showed great isolation and strong Street style moves. Above: Rock ‘n’ Roll pairs 54 DANCE ISSUE 482

PAIRS REPORT BY YVONNE TAYLOR-HILL Podiums were cleared away, the floor emptied ready for the first of the supporting events and a new adjudicating panel was introduced – Carla Field, Kirstie Henry, Moya Jordan, Vernon Kemp, Jacqui Norton and Naomi Richards. All was now ready for the first rounds of the Pairs event and the competitors were bursting with adrenaline and energy. As a teacher, I can say from personal experience, that this is always an event that is so enjoyed by the dancers themselves. Dancing with a ‘buddy’ is so much fun and a less daunting experience. I was very impressed with the partner skills developing from some of our younger medallists who were already showing an appreciation of shape and line towards partner as well as good spatial awareness. No more solo routines danced side by side – well done. Overall, I felt that this year the dancing and choreography ticked all the required boxes that produce excellent couples dancing – good connection to partner both visually and physically, inspired choreography that showed a change in shape and position to each other, dancing that moved around the floor safely with an understanding of floor craft and spatial awareness. Yvonne Taylor-Hill

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL FINALS REPORT BY SHONA CLACK At 3pm following the Pairs competition, Nicky Miles introduced each dance school competing in the Rock ‘n’ Roll event as school representatives filed past into the arena carrying their colourful school banners. All the Rock ‘n’ Roll qualifiers

joined them to create high spirits for the start of the Rock ‘n’ Roll finals. Taking to the floor first were the Under-8s and Under-10s. They showed so much energy in their dancing, and their timing was impeccable despite being the youngest competitors. As the competition moved on there was a good use of syllabus figures and compound steps being danced by the Bronze/Silver/ Gold levels. Our first rounds were concluded by the four remarkable couples in the Over-25s. It is so wonderful to see the commitment these dancers still hold and how much enjoyment they get from their dancing. The costumes and the choreography were the two elements that stood out for me this year. The choreography was pleasing to watch especially from the Gold Stars and Awards categories. They combined a variety of basics with some outstanding partner work to incorporate lifts and jumps and had some imaginative sequence of steps to finish off some fantastic routines. It was soon finals time and you could see from the smiles and expressions on the competitors’ faces as they were dancing that they were ecstatic to have been chosen and were all determined to gain a place on the podium. The adjudicators had their work cut out and this shows what an exceptional job the teachers are doing to train their pupils throughout the year. The standard improves greatly every year and it will be so exciting to see what 2018 holds. What an amazing event and congratulations to all the winners. Shona Clack

There was a great display of solo dancing with some excellent floor-craft. The Under-6s performed with just as much talent as the Gold Stars and the rounds of Solos show an increase in standard every year with a lovely display of bold and beautiful colours in the Bronze & Below sections to the glitz and glamour of the higher levels.

This year there was an additional event – the ISTD teachers dancing to ‘5678’ proved how wonderful they really are and great role models for their pupils. After the presentations were made, many happy faces left the venue proudly holding their trophies as they made their way home, ready to do it all again next year – 7th October 2018 – at the Guildford Spectrum. Thank you to the DFR Faculty Committee for excellent organisation of another amazing National Grand Finals’ Day, to Nicky Miles for compering, keeping a busy programme of events on time, to Justin Light for inspiring dance tracks throughout the day, to the adjudicating panels for their commitment ensuring the best dancers got through to the final rounds, and less obvious but with very important contributions to the smooth running of the day – the team of scrutineers and the tireless runners and Door Stewards. H

uge congratulations must go to everyone involved in this year’s Junior Ballet Awards held at The Venue in Milton Keynes on 29th October. Upon arrival I was greeted by our Co-ordinator Julia Beattie who, as always, makes you feel welcome, and an electric atmosphere in the foyer, filled with excited children and parents. As I went backstage to help with the Grade 1 class, I was amazed to see the way in which the large team of examiners and student helpers organised the children in a calm and friendly way, ensuring that everyone knew exactly what was required of them, preparing the children to be able to dance and give of their best. Special thanks go to Lisa Aldridge, Ruth Davies, Sadie Morgan, Beverley Rand, Helen Steggles and Donald Vleugels. The afternoon session saw the Grade 2 classes and I was privileged to be one of the Faculty to adjudicate this group. As in the morning there were three classes and then the final with about 60 children in each of the grades. Joanne Evans and Alison Avis taught their beautiful classes calmly to put the candidates at their ease and the overall standard was excellent. The teachers and parents should be very pleased and proud of the achievements of the children. Well done to Jackie Styles who stage-managed the whole day, for the first time, to Vivienne Saxton our Faculty Chair and to all in the Imperial Classical Ballet Faculty. Janet Marshall

The Training of Ballet Technique Courses Reports from the ISTD’s successful courses in Guildford and Italy From Cathy Court

From Judith Koppenleitner

I attended the ISTD Imperial Ballet Summer School in August and was thrilled to be able to spend a day working with Helen Steggles to learn about The Training of Ballet Technique (TBT). The day was so inspiring, with Helen’s clear and objective approach, which enabled me to immediately understand the benefits of each exercise and how to apply them to children and students of all ages and abilities at the various stages of their training. Helen explained so clearly the importance of creating a ladder system to apply the fundamental skills, which are so important to train pupils safely throughout their development. The work is very clearly laid out in the course of study, concentrating on particular areas of ballet training and within those sections a clear method of progression. Helen also emphasised the importance of the use of suitable music to enhance the work. I have been using TBT in all my classes this term, working up to Intermediate level. The students have responded very positively to the work. The exercises are simple but so effective and therefore the students can immediately feel the benefit of the exercise and apply it to their class work. I have found this has also encouraged the students to take ownership of their work in class as their understanding of how their own individual body works is increasing. Thank you, Helen, for giving me the opportunity to develop my own understanding of the fundamental skills required for the teaching of classical ballet and to be able to pass this on in my teaching. Also, many thanks go to Debbi Parks who played so beautifully for us on the day. Cathy Court

I found The Training of Ballet Technique at the ISTD summer school not only enjoyable, but also very educational and beneficial. It was recommended to purchase the book and DVD prior to the course, which I found to be very helpful. The course of study comprises many short exercises, so to be able to gain an overview by watching the DVD and reading through the book before attending the course, certainly aided the understanding. Helen Steggles who ran the course was passionate and presented even the simplest exercise in an interesting way. We learned, went over and discussed most of the exercises and how they progressed. I found it to be of great benefit to be able to actively try them out, working with a partner and practise and discuss teaching methods at the same time. The training concept is very user friendly and designed for any teacher to be able to incorporate it in their weekly classes. During the day we had interesting discussions about a variety of aspects of ballet teaching and it has broadened my knowledge and given me new ideas. I have already started using many of the exercises recommended, not only with my younger students, but also with my full time vocational and DDE students. So far, I have found it to be extremely useful and well received by all of them. Judith Koppenleitner

Images: Technique training courses in Bari

From Diane Durant in Italy The course in Bari, Italy was a great success. Many of the teachers attending had already gained their DDE or Licentiate status, but there were also some younger DDE students. Initially, watching the DVD gave the teachers a good idea as to what they were looking for and eventually what they were hoping to achieve. The important aspect of these exercises is that they can be taught in everyday classes and without the use of any equipment. The training exercises are prepared on three different levels, and for various age groups, from the young children to the more mature adult. The different sections from ports de bras to adage through to pirouettes and allegro make a very interesting variety of work. The teachers enjoyed working in pairs, which helped them understand more fully the technique of some of the exercises. Helen Steggles was the lecturer on this occasion. She was very professional and full of information, which made the whole day profitable and enjoyable. The exercises were taught very clearly and with precision. At the end of the day Helen taught a junior ballet class, introducing some of the exercises from the programme. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a lovely way to finish the day. How to Make a Miracle Happen Morgan Hemphill reports on another sparkling Blackpool Grand Finals

T

here is always something spine tingling and special about walking into the world famous Winter Gardens in Blackpool. And this year’s ISTD Grand Finals were no exception. Whilst preparations by dancers, teachers and dance schools across the UK and as far away as Barbados got underway, behind the scenes hard work, organisation and dedication was transforming the prestigious Empress Ballroom ready for a busy and successful weekend. With damage to it’s beautifully ornate ceiling, the ballroom had been closed for repair, so it wasn’t until the last minute that the event was given the full go ahead. Huge

congratulations to Nicky Miles, the ISTD and the whole team who worked endlessly to make it happen. After lessons, practice and training, tan, hair, make-up, rhinestones, long journeys, early starts, the doors opened on Saturday morning to the buzz and excitement, with the youngest competitors ready to dance first. It always inspires me to see so many dancers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities coming together, cheering on friends and fellow competitors. Seeing the thrill and enjoyment of dance through the whole of Saturday’s programme from the early rounds right through to the finals, makes anyone see just what dance is about. And it didn’t stop there. Saturday night brought Disney to Blackpool. A full evening of dancing, good spirits and laughs combined with a fabulous Disney parade with every character imaginable. Richard Lifshitz and Laura Robinson, the current International Professional Rising Star Champions performed a fantastic Latin show, a combination of traditional, modern and creative ideas together with great dancing held something for

everyone. Everyone had a great evening and a chance to let their hair down, celebrate results and add to an already brilliant weekend. Another early start on Sunday, for the adults this time, proved to be just as electrifying as the day before. The day started with the Sequence events followed by the Ballroom and Latin events and couples to round off the weekend. From first rounds to the finals the energy was high, with many successes and personal achievements along the way. Packed cars, trophies galore, tired feet and plenty of new stories were taken away from another ISTD Grand Finals weekend. I’m pretty sure that all dancers, teachers and the team of organisers are already looking forward to what the next year brings... after a good rest of course! Well done and congratulations to everyone who participated in and supported Grand Finals 2017. Morgan Hemphill

ISTD Medallist Festival in Troisdorf Angela Pikaski and Alex Tenou report on a successful and supportive event

O

n Sunday 25th June we danced our first ISTD Medallist Festival in Troisdorf. When we arrived in the morning the atmosphere was very much the same as before the start of any other competition: dancers trying out the floor, getting dressed, warming up, preparing for their great day. What we found very special was the great support that the dancers gave each other. No matter if there was a young dancer dancing his or her first medallist competition or a group of more experienced dancers competing against each other, the crowd cheered for every dancer. Between their competitions most of the dancers stayed in the room to support all the others. So although it was a competition and everyone wanted to deliver a good performance the atmosphere was very friendly. What was really new for us was being judged as individual dancers and not as a couple. Most of the other dancers danced with a teacher in the solo competitions. We were really impressed by the way the teachers danced the whole day with all their different students, doing their best to make them look good. It was nice to see how a teacher can dance one dance with a beginner junior dancer and the next with an experienced adult dancer and give both the best possible support. So every competitor was able to show his or her best dancing. And you could tell that the teachers really enjoyed those dances themselves.

What we found very special was the great support that the dancers gave each other At the end of the day there was a party where all the dancers came together to talk and dance and have a good time. Our first Medallist competition was a great new experience and we are very happy that we were given the opportunity to take part. ISTD Salsa in India Conrad Coelho introduces the new ISTD Salsa Syllabus in India

I

have been teaching Latin American and Ballroom Dancing in Mumbai, India, since 2006. In my quest to pursue excellence in dance, I travelled to England in 2009 to learn the ISTD Syllabus and in due course gained the ISTD Ballroom Student Teacher and Latin American Associate qualifications. I am also a Salsa enthusiast and have been passionately promoting this dance style in Mumbai, along with other popular club dances such as Bachata and Merengue. The unique selling point of Salsa has always been its ‘social dancing’ element ie you could frequent a Salsa club and dance Salsa with strangers and socialize. The biggest challenge to a Salsa teacher, however, is devising a syllabus for this dance that could have varied permutations of hand holds, arm positions, turn patterns, shines and styling. Any Salsa enthusiast would agree that once the fundamentals are learnt the possibilities of the combinations are limitless, allowing for personal expressions of the music. The Salsa scene in India is growing exponentially with almost every city hosting a Salsa party on almost every night of the week. With this increasing popularity of the dance, the need for a relevant and credible syllabus is essential. During my interaction with Simon Cruwys, an ISTD Examiner, at a medal test exam day in Mumbai in December 2016, I was pleased to learn that the Authentic and Emerging Dance Committee (formerly the Club Dance Faculty) had recently released the ISTD Salsa syllabus. I was also aware that Susana Montero (world renowned Salsa expert and performer) was part of the Salsa syllabus framing team. So, very excited to learn the revised ISTD Salsa Syllabus, I travelled to the beautiful town of Bournemouth in England in May 2017 and commenced training with Suzanne Hammond, Fellow and Examiner, AED Committee member and co-author of the Salsa syllabus.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the syllabus study material consisted of four books: a Technique Book dedicated to each of the three main styles, LA, NY and Cuban coupled with a separate Study Book dedicated to understanding the rich history and evolution of the music and dance and also covering technical aspects of footwork, spinning, free styling, music definitions and much more. Care was taken to also add chapters on Class Structure, Legal Requirements and Professional Etiquette, which are invaluable to a new teacher entering the profession. It was also a pleasure to meet Cuban Salsa expert and author of the Cuban syllabus book Ian Postle, and gain insights on Cuban Salsa styling. Having studied intensively for two weeks with Suzanne Hammond, I was entered for the LA Salsa Associate exam on 20th May 2017 with Miss Anne Lingard as my examiner. I am pleased to announce that I passed with Highly Commended. Gaining this qualification, I am so very proud to say that I have become the first ISTD qualified Salsa teacher in India. On my return to India I was very much looking forward to sharing this extensive syllabus with my students and am now excited to announce that many of them will be taking the Salsa medal tests in December at my exam session. I also have four candidates currently studying for the LA Salsa Student Teacher examination. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Cruwys family for hosting me during my stay in England and Simon Cruwys and Suzanne Hammond-Cruwys for your whole hearted support and guidance. I now look forward to the ISTD Salsa Licentiate Qualification… Viva La Salsaaa! Conrad Coelho, LA Salsa Associate, Latin American Associate, Ballroom Student Teacher, Mumbai, India

TRIBUTES TO JOAN SOUTHWOOD (NÉE FIELD) From Vernon Kemp

On joining the Sequence Faculty Committee in 1987 I began to see the dedication and hard work behind the scenes that Joan brought to the ISTD. Despite living the furthest from London in the North East, Joan Above: Joan Field attended many meetings and regularly examined all over the UK. As our friendship developed I began to realise the depth of knowledge behind that calm exterior. As well as the countless dancers and teachers that Joan has left in the North East, her legacy to the ISTD is without doubt the wonderful Grade work in Sequence. Above all, I will remember her genuine open nature and friendship. Vernon Kemp

From Jill Bush In the past I had never stopped to consider how long I had known Joan. Truly, I was amazed to discover that we had first been introduced 40 years ago, when I was a newly qualified Associate. Many years of Joan’s life were dedicated to the ISTD, not only was she a teacher but also a multi-faculty examiner, lecturer and highly valued committee member. In all the years that I knew Joan she was always the same. She was a calm, modest and very kind person, who never sought the limelight or expected any recognition. She herself was overwhelmed when the Society honoured her with the Imperial Award in 2001: “Whatever have I done to deserve this?” I heard her say. The list would have been endless! From Morris Langham I have known Joan all of my life, as my mother and Joan were cousins and our families were very close. After years of trying, Joan finally persuaded my younger brother, younger sister and me to go and learn to dance. She was an excellent teacher and soon had the three of us with partners and entering competitions. After many years of competing I went on to study with Joan to take my professional exams with the ISTD. I am sure you will always be remembered, Joan, by all those people whose lives you improved through dancing. God bless you and thank you for bringing dancing into my life. n Sunday 12th November, I arrived with the sun shining on the new Bird College building and there was an air of excitement and anticipation for the day of workshops and competition ahead. From the moment we entered it seemed to be the perfect location for our showcase. The opportunity to work at such a great location was inspirational for our ISTD dancers. It gave them a taste of what a day in the life of a full time college student might feel like. The quadrant layout has a strong community feel with large, bright studio spaces. The environment and architecture gave a vibe of inspiration while, at the same time, providing a safe place to engender positive dance creativity. The facilities were topped off by the terrific support and enthusiasm of the Bird students who looked after everyone for the whole day. They were certainly a credit to Luis De Abreu

(Vice Principal), Shirley Coen (Principal) and Bird College. Luis also found time to give parents of the students a guided tour of the new building, which was an unexpected and additional treat. The children were split into four groups with well-established and seasoned professionals from the dance world. The students were taught a broad range of different styles of modern dance from musical theatre to hip hop. This proved both challenging, insightful and fun. During the day, I walked from studio to studio, witnessing each space buzzing with excitement. The classes gave off a great energy due to the fast and professional pace at which they were being taught. From what I observed, not one student ever sat down or gave up. They all rose to the challenge. One student quipped: “how inspiring it was to work with professional dancers and get a real taste of West End repertoire.”

Our choreographic competition in memory of Miss Doreen Bird, followed in the afternoon. It was a joy and a privilege to watch 11 beautifully created dance pieces, across the age range from 8–18 years. The quality of the trios and troupes made the judges’ decisions much harder. The dancers had the joy of performing in the beautiful new Doreen Bird Foundation Theatre, which fashioned a wonderful theatrical experience along with some atmospheric smoke. While the judges went out to deliberate, two students from Morea Performing Arts danced their own choreography. Both dances were motivating and inspirational.

From Vancouver to Guildford Penelope Boyse’s memories of summer school 2017

hen I heard the news that my beloved residential summer school was returning, I could barely contain my excitement. From 2002–2013 Chichester teacher training summer school had quite literally been the highlight of my year, as it allowed me the opportunity to reconnect with so many of my amazing and inspirational tutors and mentors from Bird College, Tracey Lee, Katie Morea, Lyn Richardson and Tereza Theodulou to name but a few. It is also the place where I made some of my most special teacher friends from around the globe. On the first evening all residing delegates and faculty members were invited to the bar for the welcome meeting, which was the perfect environment for mingling and getting to know one another, hosted by the new Artistic Director, Ginny Brown, the newly appointed Chair of the Modern Theatre Faculty, Tereza Theodoulou, and Jackie Hayward, Chair of the Tap faculty. All three welcomed us with open arms, updated us with their latest news, and gave us a brief insight into how the week ahead was going to be structured. We spent the remainder of the evening reminiscing, and sharing our excitement about what was to come.

Each day would begin with an energizing warm up of our choice, (either Jazz or Tap or Pilates) and the evenings filled with lectures, additional classes, social gatherings, and the famous trivia quiz night. For the first two days I studied Advanced 1 Modern, with the lovely Ruth Armstrong. Ruth did an amazing job at reading the class and recognizing our needs. We spent the days recapping/learning exercises, dancing our hearts out, and laughing uncontrollably at her hilarious personality! We all felt enormous gratitude to Ruth, for sharing her great knowledge and expertise, which was informative and inspiring.

The work was created so beautifully and taught with such clarity

DANCE Modern Theatre

I spent the next two days learning the new Inter Tap Syllabus. Heather Rees taught this with great precision, passion, and enthusiasm, and on day one we managed to get through the warm ups and drills, leaving a little time at the end to play around with rhythm. Leaving day two for the technical exercises, performance sequences and amalgamations. We were even lucky enough to have Ruth perform her Musical Theatre Amalgamation, so that we could see the detail and style required. There was an enormous amount of information to take in, but the work was created so beautifully and taught with such clarity, that it seemed to flow through our bodies with great ease. It felt so good to just let go and dance. On the morning of day five, I met a sympathetic response from the ISTD staff, when asking if I could drop in and out of classes.

I had just one more day to squeeze in as much information as possible, before heading back to Vancouver. This would be an enjoyable and slightly less taxing day, spent with the lovely Helen Green, Alison Forrester and Elizabeth Reeves, revising some of the Tap and Modern grade work. What a wonderful way to conclude such an amazing week. I would sincerely like to thank everyone involved in making it such a special and memorable experience, and I cannot wait until next year. NATIONAL DANCE

Residential Recollections Lisa Norris, Karen Thompson and Sally Upton remind us of the benefits of residential summer school

PHOTOS BY RACHEL CHERRY

I am delighted to report that I now have a regular weekly National dance class at my school

The ISTD Residentital Summer School 2017

I cannot thank the National dance tutors, Jayne Wing and Barbara Simons enough for sharing all their knowledge with us and to all the National course attendees for giving us so much encouragement and support so that we were able to return to our schools and introduce the National work. I am delighted to report that I now have a regular weekly National dance class at my school, which is proving extremely popular and have also recently been invited into one of our local primary schools to teach. My students are gaining so much from the National work and I would encourage more teachers to attend courses and see the many benefits it has to offer their students. Karen Thompson

From Karen

From Sally

Having wanted to attend the National Dance residential course for several years, I finally got my wish in 2017 and travelled over to the Surrey University campus in August. I was looking forward to learning more about the National graded work and developing my interest further. When I arrived, and found my way around the campus, I was delighted to meet with past London College of Dance students, some of whom I hadn’t seen since graduation. An evening of reminiscing ensued, which is one of the great things about being on a residential course. The following day I made my way to the superb venue at the Guildford School of Acting, where I was greeted with such friendliness at the National dance warm up session, given by Jayne Wing. This was an excellent way to meet other teachers. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming that we soon became engrossed in learning the syllabi. Jayne Wing was so clear in her instructions and imparting her knowledge that Elisa, my dance partner for the week, and I were slightly in awe and wondered if we would be able to learn all the various countries’ dances and more importantly replicate their different styles. With lots of encouragement from everyone, we soon became more confident and even though it was hard work, we had so much fun.

On Monday 7th August I headed off early to the National Summer School. It was easy to find and I was soon under my umbrella making my way to the building. It almost felt like one’s first day at school, with anticipation, excitement and not quite knowing what to expect. On signing in, the ISTD staff were cheerful and helpful and pointed me in the right direction. I was greeted with a lovely warm welcome from Barbara Simons, and friends I had made on previous National summer schools. We were soon all up and enjoying working on our first dance. Everyone was very friendly and by changing dance partners frequently you really got to know each other. Barbara Simons’ delivery of the Vocational syllabus was clear, working at a suitable pace for everyone and we were able to make helpful notes as we went along. Jayne Wing had been taking the National grades class in another room and at various times we all met up and had fun dancing some of grade dances together. It was great to get together with other National teachers and examiners, we had time over lunch and in breaks to chat together, compare experiences and ask any questions that we had. The highlight of the summer school for me was the new Primary Class Examination that Barbara Simons has created. We all took part in the class, learning the new work to some great tunes for children. The syllabus is a general introduction to National dance

and will be very good for youngsters, as it requires partner work. This will give the opportunity to make new friends and the less confident children can rely on the support of someone with whom to dance. I am looking to start this as a family class as I think all ages will enjoy the new work. Thank you to Barbara Simons and everyone involved for a great summer school. I will look forward to next year. Sally Upton

From Lisa, the Helen Wingrave Award Winner National Dance has always been a favourite of mine. After introducing the vocational grades at the college where I teach, I felt that I needed to improve my knowledge and decided to apply for a place on the summer school in Guildford. I was then lucky enough to win the Helen Wingrave Award, which was a scholarship for the tuition fees enabling me to attend the course. I am very grateful to the National Faculty for giving me this opportunity. It was lovely to be taught by the National Faculty Vice Chair, Barbara Simons, who taught me National at college many years ago. As always she delivered the work with passion, imparting her

The teachers attending were all at different stages of their learning but many, along with myself, needed Licentiate training so it was good to share the experience with others in the same position. We took time to discuss the many requirements of the Graded and Vocational Graded exams as well as the teaching examinations, which was very useful and gave me the confidence I needed to deliver the work. Each and every person who attended this course was friendly and supportive and the lecturers were a credit to the National Dance Faculty. Lisa Norris

NEW PRIMARY CLASS EXAMINATION The new syllabus will be examined from January 2018. The examination will be conducted by the teacher and candidates will be entered in sets of up to four. The syllabus does not cover dances from specific countries, but focuses on the basic elements of National dance, such as working in partners, groups and patterns, using simple steps including walks, runs and gallops. It is suitable for teachers of all dance genres who teach young children and those who teach in primary schools. No previous experience of National dance is required. The work was taught for the first time at the Teachers Residential Summer School in Guildford, where it was extremely well received. The following are a few of the comments that were made: “The highlight for me was the new Primary Class Examination.” “It will be very good for youngsters as it requires partner work, which will give them the opportunity to make new friends.” “I am looking to start this as a family class as I think that all ages will enjoy the work.”

TAP DANCE

Intermediate Tap Feedback from teachers who have attended Intermediate Tap courses in 2017 From Alison Christy

T

here was a Buzz in the air as I checked into the Guildford School of Acting for the ISTD residential summer school. Everyone was talking about the new Intermediate Tap syllabus, “ground breaking”, “so much content”, “amazing”, “can’t wait to teach this”, were the comments from the lips of the delegates who had already taken the two day course. Demand was at an all-time high, so the Society had to schedule four separate courses to fill the demand.

This is a syllabus that will bring the ISTD to the forefront of Tap in this competitive era We were presented with a very cleverly and well-constructed syllabus and the clearest Tap notes that I have ever laid eyes upon. The syllabus contains drills to perfect technique, technical exercises, turning sequences, and numerous time-steps. It culminates in two exceptional amalgamations that are so relevant in the world of Tap today. The build-up from the grades is now seamless and it’s such an exciting start to the vocational examinations. Thanks to the whole team on creating such an amazing training tool for today’s young tapper, and a syllabus that will bring the ISTD to the forefront of tap in this competitive era and be relevant and challenging for very many years to come. Alison Christy

From Emily Goldborn

T

he new Intermediate Tap syllabus is modern, fresh, challenging and embraces the roots of Tap. I’m so pleased to see a strong rhythm Tap influence, and extended vocabulary and techniques like slides included. The styles are varied and reflect the diversity of Tap dance and, as we always have, place a strong emphasis on the connection between music and dance. The new drills stress the importance of focusing on each step individually and mastering them, while the technical sequences bring these steps together in a way that allows the students to understand how to apply the vocabulary. The amalgamations give a further chance for students to really dance and show their skills. The choreography throughout the syllabus is beautifully done and feels lovely to dance. The interpretive section

replacing the ‘rhythm’ section is exciting and I hope will motivate people to explore and experiment with rhythm and musicality. Overall the new Intermediate has a feeling of continuity from the new grades and seems like a natural progression now in terms of content and standard. As teachers what we all really need and want is a vocational syllabus that excites us and our students, and the Tap Faculty have done such a great job creating this for us. Although we all do free work and training outside of the syllabus with our students, it’s lovely to have set work that is up to date, fun and still challenging. From a business point of view we need an energised syllabus that keeps our students coming back, and from an artistic point of view we need work that is exciting and gives students the necessary training to cope with what they will encounter when they move on to the next part of their journey – especially if they are training/working internationally. By keeping up to date and embracing different styles in how we train our students we can elevate the level of Tap we see in this country – and maybe even its popularity in mainstream culture. I know my students are going to love it and I can’t wait to teach it. Emily Golborn

From Liza Meggitt

T

he new syllabus is everything that we ISTD Tap fanatics hoped it would be – stunningly modernised incorporating American styles, but carefully retaining the ISTD character with a nod to the old work. Right from the start of a true Tap warm up (rather than a more choreographed sequence) through to the brilliantly devised vocab drills, technical exercises and turning sequences, as teachers we could feel the improvement of technical skill, artistry and virtuosity of upcoming Intermediate students in our hands with such a syllabus creatively crafted with care. In truth, picking up the syllabus to write this article, I got utterly distracted with my own squeals of delight on recalling some of the time-steps. I’ve always been a huge fan of the contrasting Inter Tap amalgamations, with a special place in my heart for the Schottishe, but the exhilaration of learning the two new dance sequences made us all realise how lucky the new generation of vocational students will be to learn such stunningly choreographed routines from different ends of the performance Tap spectrum. DANCE People

I

have had one of the best 12 months of my life and it’s all down to one thing… Ballroom and Latin dancing. Last year I took part in The Secret Life of the Ballroom, a six-part UKTV Original television documentary series following five everyday couples, as they started competitive dancing around the UK. My reluctant partner was my 18 year-old son Harry and together we spent three months learning a new dance every two weeks with our amazing ISTD dance teacher Caroline Hampton from Hove Dance Centre. We then took to the floor to compete against the other couples. There were highs – winning the Cha-Cha and the Waltz – but also lows due to sickness bugs and struggling to fit it in around our ‘normal’ family life.

We spent three months learning a new dance every two weeks with our amazing ISTD dance teacher

Walking into the Winter Gardens on competition day was a dream come true When the filming stopped I was left with a big void in my life, so I set myself another challenge, to dance at the ISTD Grand Finals within the year. With Caroline’s help I took my social dance test exam, entered into my first medallist competitions around the South of England and, to my total amazement, qualified to dance at Blackpool. Walking into the Winter Gardens on competition day was a dream come true… the music, the dresses. The atmosphere was electric and hazy with hairspray, but I loved it. I felt I danced the best I had ever danced on that historic dance floor and will be back every year until I get to wear an ISTD Grand Finalist’s sash, so watch this space.... Roberta Woodhouse

Teaching Qualification Assessments Regulated Teaching Qualifications Below is the Teaching Qualifications Calendar for the current Diploma in Dance Instruction and Diploma in Dance Education until the end of 2018, to allow Approved Dance Centres to plan their delivery. Note that entry dates for Health and Safety and Lifespan Development examinations have been separated for EU and UK Approved Dance Centres because of the extra time potentially needed for translation of papers. All fees and relevant work or information should be sent to the Professional Qualifications Assistant in the Customer Services

& Quality Assurance Department, by the Approved Dance Centre with which the learner is registered, by the closing dates indicated. Although the ISTD will make every effort to adhere to these dates, they are always subject to review and potential alteration. Please note: This is for the existing Diploma in Dance Instruction and Diploma in Dance Education qualifications, to allow for the transition to all units of the new Diploma in Dance Education from September 2018.
