We are pleased to announce the new alternative Theatre Advanced 1 and 2 Analysis examinations, which will be available from 2018 (see page 9). These are aimed at those already teaching or who wish to teach. ance Proms returns to the Royal Albert Hall, London for its seventh year on Sunday 5th November 2017. With an amazing line up of selected schools, inspiring guest acts, plus support from celebrity patrons this is a celebration of dance you won’t want to miss! 2017 marks the launch of the Dance Proms Young Choreographer category. Open to young creatives aged 10–21, the Young Choreographer category aims to give aspiring choreographers from all over the world a platform to showcase their work like no other, plus guidance and support to these growing artists in the form of one-to-one mentoring with an established industry professional. All entries were reviewed by a celebrity judging panel made up of Darcey Bussell CBE, West End actor John Partridge, BBC Young Dancer winner Nafisah Baba, and co-founder and choreographer for BalletBoyz, Michael Nunn OBE. They were asked to consider originality, creativity, use of space, floor patterning, movement, use of costume, and choice of music when choosing a winner. The decision was unanimous and in July Christopher Thomas was announced as Above: Young Choreographer the winner of the first ever Dance Proms winner, Christopher Thomas Young Choreographer title. He will go on to receive a one-to-one mentoring workshop with Akram Khan, MBE (DESH, iTMOi, Vertical Road, Gnosis and zero degrees) and will perform his choreography In Light of Those You Love in November.

The choreography is inventive and physically demanding

S
ince the previous edition of DANCE magazine I have been able to attend numerous summer performance events across the UK and it has been so reassuring to see the outcome of all the skill and dedication our teachers provide for all their students regardless of age or culture. The choreography is inventive and physically demanding. We are conscious of the ‘fusion’ of styles with complex partnering and inclusion of acrobatics and our responsibility as teachers for providing a secure technical underpinning very relevant to the core stability. This season has been a revelation in seeing the contrasts in production values and in the majority of shows the audiences have shown their support and pleasure in what is being produced. In this edition I want to share images taken from a varied selection of summer performances. These schools/colleges offer ISTD examinations from grades to teaching qualifications. They produced an outstanding standard of teaching, demonstrating different qualities of artistry and creative performance for their dancers with diverse perspectives as either recreational or careerfocused entertainment. I confess that watching creative outcomes of the work of the ISTD is so inspiring. The significance of music and dance is now more and more relevant to our future wellbeing in a world so focused on technology. The performances I have attended provide a conviction that the work undertaken by teachers is so valuable and an opportunity not to be neglected or rejected by a new generation of young ambitious dance practitioners.

Masters College Matt Plummer, Principal Their showcase, UNITE, at the Shaw Theatre, London was outstanding in continuity and diversity. Every student produced evidence of sound vocational training in the three elements of musical theatre and the production values enhanced the work.
Creative Academy George Kirkham, Principal The graduate year at Creative Academy produced their Showcase 2017 at the Lillian Baylis Theatre, Sadlers Wells, London. The final year module of this BA Hons degree programme uniquely challenges the graduates to plan, administrate and choreograph the event and they achieved an impressive outcome. The 50-minute run-through performance was a mature, confident and professionally effective performance with creative, innovative ideas and excellent builds in choice of music and genre. This degree programme offers ISTD teaching pathways.
Harlequin Dance Paula Dymock, Principal This school has a high reputation for quality and diversity and this was evidenced in examination results and in national competitions where its young students impressed. This year they won both the Junior and Senior sections of the Janet Cram Awards 2017. Paula’s students were also very successful in winning numerous awards in the All England Competition 2017.

The Centre Performing Arts
Jonathan Wilkes, Nikki Wilkes and Suzanne Mole, Principals The Wyvern Theatre was sold out for all of the five performances and the audience response to the summer show was evidence of its successful format in production. The cast of energetic, focused artists was fully engaged in every aspect of the programme, Sing, Act and Dance. The work was punctuated with highly dynamic commercial work throughout the show and students narrated the whole performance with a modern, stand-up comedy familiarity, which had a persuasive commercial presentational skill that worked well for the audience. This is a young college that also offers ISTD technical underpinning.

THE ABOUT STUDIO
Karen King, Principal The technical and artistic quality of training was exceptional in the recent summer performance. The programme was, as always, crafted to show the creative talents of the students and the energy and dynamics in contrasting choreography. The graduates from The Centre have the opportunity to underpin their performance ambitions with sound teaching methodology from the outset of the three-year programme. These additional options are a valuable sustainable future career pathway and evidenced in the maturity of the work in every production.
Morea Performing Arts Katie Morea, Principal Their Summer Production featured a dynamic cast showing technical diversity throughout the two hour programme. The emphasis on student choreography is clearly evident in the training the dancers receive and the artistry and musicality is always professional and mature in performance. Worthy of mention is the recent success achieved when the college entered two solo pieces by Maya Culin and El Waldron for the new Dance Proms Young Choreographers Award and both dances were in the final top 10, which were viewed by the celebrity panel of judges, Darcy Bussell, Michael Nunn, Jon Partridge and Nafisah Baba (winner of BBC Young Dancer Award). The encouraging feedback included: “Amazing movement quality”, “Great music – really set the atmosphere”, “The dancer’s movement quality was a pleasure to watch” and “Good lyrical storytelling”.

#BestPractice: Continuing Professional Development Introducing this vital element of our new Professional Standards Scheme The ISTD Professional Standards Scheme covers four main areas that form the foundation of a good dance teacher: Child Protection Insurance Continuing Professional Development Health and Safety The scheme is being rolled-out in conjunction with our new-look DANCE-TEACHERS.org, a searchable directory where ISTD-qualified teachers can register their details and advertise their dance school business. For each completed element of the scheme you will receive a badge against your online profile, showing potential customers that you take your responsibilities in the dance studio seriously.
What is Continuing Professional Development? Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the term used to describe life-long learning. It is used by professionals in all job sectors to enhance their existing knowledge by learning new skills and following the latest developments within their chosen career.
What counts as CPD? CPD can be gained by attending ISTD courses and congresses, receiving mentoring or coaching and watching performances and competitions. You can also attend courses run by other dance, arts and educational organisations. If you currently adhere to another teaching CPD scheme you can submit the same evidence to us provided it meets the ISTD’s requirements.
When does CPD begin and why do we need it? At the ISTD we believe that gaining your initial teaching qualifications signifies the start of CPD, which should continue throughout your teaching career. It is important that your teaching skills are up-to-date as you have the responsibility of training the next generation of dance sector professionals. As new dance styles and techniques emerge and dance education and training methods constantly evolve, CPD helps teachers keep pace with these developments.
What are the benefits of CPD? CPD will ensure that you realise your full potential as a teacher and that your students receive the best possible training from you. As your CPD studies progress you may develop your career with further qualifications and explore new areas of interest within the dance sector. When you attend CPD events you also have the opportunity to meet and share your experiences with like-minded professionals, which can help inspire your teaching and build your professional network.
8 DANCE ISSUE 481
How do I get started? It is helpful to begin by reflecting on the areas of your teaching practice where you feel that you can improve and develop your knowledge. You will then be able to identify where to focus your CPD. More detailed guidance and template documents for the scheme are downloadable from the ISTD website at www.istd.org/coursesand-training/professional-standards-scheme. If you need further help please contact: coursebookings@istd.org.
How do I evidence my CPD? When you have completed your 18 hours of Continuing Professional Development simply visit DANCE-TEACHERS.org and tick the CPD Professional Scheme box on your profile. It is important to retain evidence of your CPD in the form of booking slips, tickets, notes and course certification. We will be using a system of random sampling checks to ensure that teachers displaying our CPD Professional Standard badge have completed their requirements.
The future of CPD at the ISTD: Our pledge to our teachers The ISTD recommends that our teachers undertake a minimum of 18 hours (3 days) of CPD per year. We currently offer a wide variety of courses and a comprehensive range of qualifications tailored to suit your needs at every stage of your career. We will also be developing further courses to offer support to our teachers, such as guidance on organising exam sessions, teaching pre-school and adult classes, and advice on running a dance school business. All our courses will display a badge indicating their hourly value towards your 18 hours of CPD. We hope that you will find your CPD inspiring and that it will enrich your teaching career. NEW Advanced 1 and 2 Analysis Examinations Introducing alternative examinations to progress your career
O
ne of the things that struck me when I joined the ISTD was the excellent opportunity for career progression that the Society offers dance teachers. The dance profession has a largely unstructured career path, yet at the ISTD a newly qualified teacher might start working for a dance school, go on to set up their own school, become a Teacher Trainer and later apply to become an Examiner or Faculty Committee member. We are committed to supporting all our members to utilize their developing knowledge and skills so that they, in turn, can nurture the next generation of teachers and to contribute to the future development of the Society. However we have identified a potential barrier to this progression in the form of the Theatre Advanced 1 and 2 examinations, which are a gateway to the Theatre Licentiate and Fellowship teaching qualifications. The Advanced 1 and 2 examinations test high level technical knowledge and skills. However changes to vocational dance training mean that fewer dancers now have the opportunity to take these examinations as students and, given the technical demand of these examinations, they can be challenging to take later in one’s career. The ISTD is therefore introducing alternative Advanced 1 and 2 Analysis examinations in Cecchetti Classical Ballet, Classical Indian Dance, Imperial Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre and Tap Dance. These examinations will test the same technical and artistic knowledge, without relying on high level physical fitness and will be available worldwide from January 2018. The new Analysis examinations are designed for those teaching, or wishing to teach in the future. They will sit alongside the current Advanced 1 and 2 examinations which are designed for those wishing to dance, or to evidence technical dance skill.
ability to accurately demonstrate and analyse performance of the syllabus and will not include knowledge of how to teach the syllabus. The Analysis exams will be the same length as the Performance exams, but candidates will enter singly. To satisfactorily demonstrate the appropriate technical and artistic knowledge requires a mature level of judgment and adaptation, which replicates the knowledge and skills required of a teacher who is teaching this level of material to students. As such, this exam equates to the same level of difficulty as the Advanced 1 and 2 Performance exams, but without the physical demands. The cost of these exams will be available on the website in the autumn. To apply for an Advanced 1 or 2 Analysis exam contact the Examinations Department who will provide you with a Statement of Physical Limitation form. This form must be completed and returned with your exam application. Ginny Brown

Advanced 1/2 Analysis: This examination evidences understanding and knowledge of Advanced 1/2 and is suitable for those wishing to progress to a teaching career Advanced 1/2 Performance: This examination evidences performance at Advanced 1/2 level and is suitable for those wishing to progress to a performance career As for the Advanced 1 Performance examination, the entry criteria for the Advanced 1 Analysis is Intermediate in the relevant genre. The Analysis examinations are designed for candidates who have long-lasting and permanent physical conditions, rather than for those with an injury. Therefore candidates will complete a Statement of Physical Limitation form at the point of application, which will be signed by their teacher. The exam format will be based on the Performance exam format and, specifically, the Examiner will request accurate demonstration of each exercise, with the option to then request analysis of a section of the exercise, or full performance of a section of the exercise in order to elicit further technical, musical or artistic detail. The examination will be marked solely on the candidate’s

ISTD Teachers’ Residential Summer School This year’s successful summer school at Guildford School of Acting
T
he 12 day residential summer school at Guildford School of Acting received enthusiastic support with 302 teachers attending a total of 67 courses run by a team of 25 lecturers. Courses were facilitated by our Tap, Modern Theatre, Imperial Ballet, Classical Indian and National faculties with guest workshops from the English National Ballet, Liz Foster, and One Dance UK. Each of the weeks began with a welcome evening where delegates had the opportunity to meet ISTD staff, committee members and lecturers. The response to the re-introduction of a residential event was overwhelmingly enthusiastic from teachers, most notably that it allowed them to socialise with ISTD teachers from the UK and around the world, forming new friendships and professional
connections. It was especially pleasing to see so many International teachers attending from countries such as Canada, Japan, South Africa and Mexico. All courses received excellent feedback, with much praise for the lecturers’ comprehensive knowledge, inspirational teaching and attention to detail. There was also a range of free morning and evening activities for residential delegates such as Pilates, tap jams, ballet conditioning and jazz warm-ups which proved very popular. In addition there were opportunities to discuss the new Advanced 1 and 2 Analysis exams, DANCE-TEACHERS.org and the Professional Standards scheme with ISTD staff.

Lecturers received excellent feedback Left: Bill Irvine and Pierre Trophy Winners 2017
T
his year was the 32nd Dancesport Congress weekend held in Worthing. It was attended by 180 delegates who were treated to lectures by a top team of experts in Ballroom, Latin, Authentic and Emerging Dance and Sequence. Lecturers received excellent feedback with teachers citing how beneficial and transferable the workshop material would be to students in their dance classes. This year’s Congress was attended by Worthing’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoress who met with ISTD committee members and enjoyed watching ISTD professionals compete in the Pierre and Bill Irvine Trophy competitions during the Tea Dance.
DAY ONE BY PAULA GOODYEAR AND SONIA NORRIS Twists and Turns with Raymond Miles saw Raymond start the day with suitable variations for Gold-Stars and above. Challenging work in Tango and Slow Foxtrot fulfilled the title, Twists and Turns. Creative choreography using standard variations was confidently taught and beautifully demonstrated by Raymond’s son Richard and his new wife Gemma. Little Latin Sparklers with Michelle Postlethwaite was an excellent lecture from Michelle, partnered by Richard Miles. Five short sparklers in the five Latin dances. Interesting, short, very usable variations for classes or medallist teaching were delivered with clarity and performed in a most attractive way. Next up was Inspired Ballroom Combinations in Waltz and Tango with Stephen Arnold and Yasmin Priestnall. Stephen delivered

the variations – good for teaching groups in Tango and Waltz – in a friendly and relaxed manner. Using standard movements, Fallaway, Slip Pivot, Whisk and Lunges, he showed how, by using syncopations and different rhythms the combination can become more inspiring. Beautifully danced by Stephen and Yasmin. How Sequence Can Benefit Your Business was delivered by Vernon Kemp, who in his usual humorous manner, gave us an excellent Sequence lecture. He advised that as teachers we need to be enthusiastic in all that we do. We should be aware of people’s age and teach accordingly. He taught a Samba sequence using basic figures, which could be a good way of introducing Samba to pupils. He demonstrated a Classical Sequence routine showing how to improve body and head positions. This was very useful work.

As teachers we need to be enthusiastic in all that we do Developing the Next Generation of Dance Stars with Warren Boyce came next. A delightful lecture from Warren using one of his Juvenile couples, Gleb and Jeanne to demonstrate for him. He showed several exercises to use to help improve power and shape. One excellent exercise showed 10 body positions from Closed Position through to Lady Outside on the left side, also head positions using A, B, C. The children showed a basic Waltz routine followed by an upgraded version in preparation for moving from Juvenile to Junior. Latin Sparklers In Rumba and Samba with Krystof Grzelak and Natalia Krzystoszek gave us two more Latin sparklers in Rumba and Samba. Both dances included swivels, spins and a drag action, which could be used in parts if the whole variation is too much for your needs. This was a positive demonstration, enhanced by Natalia’s excellent use of feet and ankles. Krystof and Natalia coped admirably in spite of some problems with the audio equipment.

DAY TWO BY MICHELLE POSTLETHWAITE

The day’s line-up was exceptional and it began with the Latin Faculty introducing their first lecture, Danny Stowell and Emma Lee with Latin Sparklers in Cha Cha and Jive. They began with the Cha Cha and demonstrated some very useful combinations, which included a variation of the natural top and some syncopated walks in right shadow position, all taught in a clear and precise manner. Their Jive remained on the same theme and began with a whip, then a clever side-by-side toe heel swivel combination followed by Drunken Sailors. Both dances used basic syllabus steps with a clever twist to create effectiveness. I’m sure they will be very useful to everyone.

Next up was a lady who required no introduction and for me I was extremely excited about this lady’s lecture as I had danced at the same studio as her as a young girl and had watched her as she travelled her path to become world champion. Joanne Bolton-Hawkins began by dancing the most beautiful Waltz with her husband Christopher, effortlessly with streams of musicality and clearly displaying her very own beautiful style. We are artistic athletes she said, we must develop our own individuality to create our own style, beginning with our look, through our dresses and hair style to developing our fundamentals, using the thighs and rib cage to create more energy and shape and movement. Joanne gave so many useful tips to help us all to develop our dancing. The whole room was immersed in her every word. After the morning coffee break it was the turn of the Authentic and Emerging Dance Sub-Committee, giving us an insight into a few of their dances on offer. Charles Richman began with the West Coast Swing assisted by Susanne Hammond. He explained that this was a slotted dance, which means it can be danced in a small corridor. They demonstrated a selection of figures all suitable for the Social Dance Test, very clearly presented. The Bosanova was the dance presented by Suzanne and assisted by Ralph Schiller, which is traditionally danced quite slow, but can be danced to different music speeds and even modern pieces to appeal to the younger generation. The Portuguese say, “if it fits the music, then it’s a Bosanova”, Suzanne explained. The Bosanova is a descendant of Samba, therefore whisks and

basic movements are frequently seen. Once again clearly taught and you could see the enjoyment from everyone participating. The last dance we were to see from this Faculty was Disco Fox, presented by Ralph and assisted by Suzanne. Ralph taught some basic steps and explained that changing the arms each time gives it a very different look and feel from the figures. I’m sure all three dances will be taken back to the studios and hopefully we can all begin to use these in our future exams. Expression and speed in the feet, legs and ankles was the topic of the lecture by the wonderful Nicola Nordin. Her expertise and depth of knowledge was presented to us as she talked about the “three t’s” – timing, tracking and toning, and how each of them would help us to produce expression and speed. All of the participants were lead though short pieces of Cha Cha and Rumba to help them to replicate and practice these actions to pass on to their students. After lunch it was the turn of one of our top Ballroom couples, Mark and Olga Elsbury with inspired combinations in Foxtrot and Quickstep. This charismatic couple gave us some beautiful combinations, I loved the simple feather step with sharp turn into a three step, Mark and Olga demonstrated two different ways to dance this, each portraying a very different style. They gave out smiley face stickers for us all to place on our belly buttons to keep us connected when dancing outside partner, a very useful teaching tip to use for our students. The Quickstep was a fun piece of choreography incorporating a very effective use of basic syllabus steps with a few variations such as a pepper pot and some bouncing whisks. Then came our second Sequence lecture of the weekend from Vernon Kemp titled Understanding Classical Sequence Tango. Vernon, very ably assisted by Robert and Louise Aldred, showed us the differences between Classical Sequence Tango and Modern Ballroom Tango with the different holds, arm positions and movements using a variety of the Classical Sequence Tangos to demonstrate. The final Latin lecture was by the great Graham Oswick and I was honoured to be asked to assist him in How to Make Your Paso Doble Sparkle. Graham always brings so much passion to his lectures and this one was no exception. He explains that there are three shaping positions, neutral, promenade and counter promenade. We must create these shapes from within using our feet, legs thighs and rib cages not just by a turn of the head and use of the joined arm. He shows us the dynamic difference it makes when danced this way, to use our bodies to their full capacity and when changing from shape to shape that the neutral position we transition through is just as important and needs to be fully executed. The final lectures were our fun party dances presented by the Ballroom, DFR and Sequence Faculties. We had Beautiful Sunday demonstrated by Paul Streatfield and Rachel Wadey, Knee Slapping Waltz demonstrated by Vernon Kemp and Paula Goodyear and It’s all Greek to Me presented by Jill Bush and her volunteers. All three dances were great fun and very different, always a great way of bringing our classes together and sharing the enjoyment that dancing brings. I’m sure these dances will prove to be very popular in the studios. To sum up what an excellent weekend of superb quality lectures, I cannot wait until next year.

SATURDAY TEA DANCE INCLUDING THE BILL IRVINE AND PIERRE TROPHY COMPETITIONS In the wonderful Art Deco Assembly Hall in Worthing a relaxed and jovial atmosphere was enjoyed by professional dancing friends catching up over a cup of tea, sandwiches and tasty slices of cake. Whilst filling their plates glimpses of the Bill Irvine Trophy competitors warming up could be caught through the main hall doors. As the competitors disappeared backstage to await their event the general dancing began with some lovely music delivered by Paul Fielding with Vernon Kemp compering the evening. The room was alive with anticipation and dancing of the wonderful variations and technique witnessed at the lectures earlier in the day. The evening’s entertainment commenced with the prestigious panel of judges announced whose job it was to separate the field of competitors challenging for the Bill Irvine Trophy. Waltz was underway and the competitors nerves were settling and by Tango the dancers were in their stride. Some beautiful Three Steps were executed in Foxtrot and a plethera of Fleckerls were delivered in the Viennese Waltz. In a flash we were at Quickstep with the beautiful contestants going toe to toe for the title-reign in their energy and desire to burst into drama equal to that of a Sunday evening episode of Poldark! A Fantastic demonstration of syllabus content and a struggle for the judges to split but Nicholas Kelly took the Leader trophy with Rosie Ward being crowned the Follower winner. More general dancing followed and was enjoyed by all as Vernon Kemp treated participants to a Progressive Sequence dance and then a stunningly beautiful Classical Sequence demonstration by Liam Pywell and Alexandra Stainton comprising Gavottes, Saunters, Two Steps and Mazurkas as the bells outside chimed precisely 6pm. Then came the turn of the Latin competitors as the Pierre Trophy began, compered by Graham Oswick and judged by a top class panel. Once more the room enjoyed an outstanding display of our syllabus content full to the brim with energy and as with the Bill Irvine trophy the winners must have been very hard to choose. A very fiercely fought contest for the new holders of the Pierre Trophy with Ben Milan-Vega winning the Leaders event and Leila Stewart winning the Followers event. All in all a fantastic afternoon’s entertainment to add to the day’s incredible lectures and one to be remembered for a long time to come. Glenn Badham

The ISTD’s 2017 Summer School in Sportilia, Italy
Can there be a better place in the world to express your passion and love for dancing, than between the vast mountain ranges and glorious sunsets that Italy has to offer? Sunè Burger I am currently the only ISTD Ballet teacher in the country of Qatar, and as blessed as I am with the opportunity, as a dancer we all need to be stimulated to keep our creative minds active. I came across the international summer camp in Italy through the ISTD’s website. I knew that this is the one place that is the complete opposite from the desert life that I have become accustomed to. Luckily in this day and age everything is just a plane ride away.
Sportilia creates memories and introduces you to new friends around every corner With the exceptional help of Carole Ann Watson, summer camp organiser, I arrived at Sportilia with a camera already full of pictures from the breathtaking scenery and a mind that is constantly trying to tell me that I am not dreaming, this is real. Sportilia’s sporting facilities are in between the mountain ranges of Northern Italy. Students were exposed to various styles of dancing such as tap, modern and street jazz, contemporary, ballet and even musical theatre and body conditioning classes. They also had the privilege to be taught by Gianluca Raponi (assisted by Simona Imola) who has his own dance company in Italy, and were taken on a new journey of contemporary dancing. Teachers had the privilege of exchanging teaching methods amongst themselves in various genres and also being taught by some of the most elite lecturers that the ISTD has to offer. When our notebooks were written full of ideas for the day, it was time to put our dancing shoes on and join in the fun, because you 16 DANCE ISSUE 481
are never too old to dance. When it was time for the sun to set everyone joined together in the dining hall for dinner and shared their fun and laughter of the day amongst friends. We were also very fortunate to have Ginny Brown, the Artistic Director of ISTD, to join us for a few days at Sportilia. All teachers were updated with the latest news and views of the ISTD and many thoughts were exchanged on how to creatively expand and develop the ISTD outside the borders of the UK. Sportilia is the one place where the urge to switch on your phone is a thought that is far in the back of your mind. It creates memories and introduces you to new friends around every corner. As teachers we sometimes get so stuck in a rut that we just keep on doing the same thing over and over every day expecting a different result. Getting out of one’s comfort zone is easier said than done, but I can honestly say that after this summer school, I am a changed teacher for the good and the experiences I had were priceless. I am so excited to share these new methods and ideas with my own students. I thank everyone that shared their passion and knowledge of dance with me and to the ISTD for creating this astounding opportunity. This is truly a summer school for everyone. My next summer school awaits. Sunè Burger

Library News ISTD Librarian, Sarah Jardine-Willoughby reports WANT TO WIN YOUR OWN COPY OF DAME BERYL’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, FOR THE LOVE OF DANCE? Just email marketing@istd.org by Friday 10th November to be in with a chance of winning your very own signed copy of this beautiful book. Terms and Conditions: Entry into all competitions is free. Only one entry per person per competition will be eligible. No cash alternatives are available and the prizes are not transferable. Entry in the competition implies acceptance of these rules. For the Love of Dance by Dame Beryl Grey London: Oberon Books, 2017 ame Beryl Grey has written a very detailed autobiography based on her diaries and letters spanning her life from the beginning to 2002 including the honour of becoming a Dame in 1988. The book is divided into two sections – the first covers her early years and her career as a performer, the second is life post performance focussing mainly on her professional life with some information about her personal. She was born in North London in Highgate to non-theatrical parents on 11th June 1927. After her parents had moved to Coulsdon and she started dance classes with Madeleine Sharp, who recognised her talent, she learnt ballet, Greek dance, national dances, musical comedy, tap, and ballroom. It was interesting to read that Beryl Grey missed the RAD Scholarship audition due to mumps, but Miss Sharp arranged an audition for her at the Vic-Wells school and later another audition for a scholarship as her parents had reservations about Beryl taking the place because of the expense. She was very lucky to have such supportive parents who moved back to North London and a supportive headmistress at the Dame Alice Owen School who allowed her to leave school early to go to the Vic-Wells school. Her professional career started early due to the Second World War when she joined Sadler’s Wells Ballet at the age of 14, in Giselle in the Corps but soon was dancing as a soloist due to other dancers’ absences. She enjoyed a rapid rise through the company, dancing in most performances; one night in the corps next as a soloist or principal. She danced her first Odette/Odile on her 15th birthday at the New Theatre wearing a red tutu for Act Three in the Sadler’s Wells production, not the familiar black we are used to today.

18 DANCE ISSUE 481
Unfortunately Beryl Grey does not appear to have enjoyed or managed the transition from ‘baby Ballerina’ to Ballerina when the company became larger after the war and moved to the Royal Opera House. She found she was not dancing as much as she had during the war, and other dancers were dancing “her roles”. She was aware Margot Fonteyn would always be the star performer but she became frustrated by not dancing many performances and she was regarded as ‘tall’ which further limited her chances. When she went on the Company’s first tour of the USA; the ballerinas were all given couture clothes designed for them individually. It was on this tour in Chicago that Dame Beryl met her husband Sven Svenson, an osteopath she had consulted. They had a long happy marriage and he was very supportive and she was able to continue her career, after her marriage and after the birth of her son, Ingvar. When she left the Royal Ballet she guested with other companies and led various international tours. She found she had to deal with all sorts of practical problems about the arrangements in each place. The second part of the book focuses on Beryl Grey as Artistic Director of Festival Ballet – a company whose standards had slipped with precarious finances. Some of the methods for raising the standards made her unpopular and the constant touring meant she was away from her husband and son for long periods. Much of her work with London Festival Ballet was hampered by the machinations of the various officials and the governing board. She then met Rudolph Nureyev while she was at Festival Ballet and describes various encounters with his temperamental behaviour. In Julie Kavanagh’s biography of Rudolf Nureyev, in a section about Nigel Gosling’s relationship with Nureyev (Nigel

She shows in this book her belief and how the support of her husband sustained her through the difficult times & Maude Gosling wrote reviews as Alexander Bland) it reads: “With Charles Murland, who had been offered the chairmanship of London Festival Ballet, Nigel was also playing power games, advising Charles to think seriously about accepting the post as a way of ‘maybe replacing Beryl Grey with R[Rudolph]”. This quote shows that the uncertainties that Beryl Grey describes in her book were justified and there were various undercurrents trying to destabilise her. Beryl Grey shows in this book her belief and how the support of her husband sustained her through the difficult times and I get a sense of her strong religious faith and how it has supported her. She and her husband became interested the Indian based philosophy, Sant Mar, and she remained a devotee. Another support was Audrey de Vos, who she went to for help in 1946 and described as “the most wonderful teacher”. She continued to go to her until de Vos retired. The book includes intriguing photographs of Dame Beryl in now forgotten ballets and is a great addition to the ISTD library and complements the other books in the library by and about her.
Other Beryl Grey Books Red Curtain Up – published in 1958 by Secker & Warburg, grown out of a series of articles commissioned by the Sunday Times on the occas0ion of Beryl Grey dancing in Russia with the Bolshoi Ballet and other Russian companies. She was the first western ballerina to be invited to dance with the Bolshoi. This book is illustrated with photographs many taken by her husband Sven Svenson. Through the Bamboo Curtain – published in 1965 by Collins, illustrated with photographs by S.G. Svenson. This book is about her tour to China dancing with the Peking Ballet Company. My Favourite Ballet Stories – edited by Beryl Grey. Lutterworth Press, 1981. This book is an anthology of extracts from various writers of dance and includes chapters on Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham, as well as an extract from Ram Gopel. was very privileged to be invited to examine Modern and Tap at the Escola de Dança Ana Mangericão in Carcavelos near Lisbon, Portugal from 4th to 7th July 2017. Carcavelos is a seaside town with a lovely beach and numerous very pleasant fish restaurants. The weather was beautiful and a couple of pleasant evening strolls ended the examining day very nicely. Ana collected my husband Phil and myself from the airport and taxied me each day to the studio and back to the hotel. She went out of her way to make our stay as comfortable as possible and was very generous in her hospitality. The School runs from an amazing building, which houses three lovely, spacious studios as well as classrooms for academic studies. The standard of the work was very high and all the pupils were beautifully groomed, polite, respectful and courteous. The majority of the candidates spoke perfect English, which made

the exams run very smoothly, especially as my Portuguese is very limited and they were very patient with my attempts to try it out! Ana has been teaching the ISTD work in Portugal for 40 years. She was a former local ISTD organiser for Portugal and has been a great help to all the teachers there for many years. Her school recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a series of spectacular shows. Ana asked me to look at a book she started back in the 1980s that had lots of comments in from all of the ISTD and RAD examiners who had examined at her school. I was in awe of the names I found in there, which included legends such as Deborah Capon, Patricia Crail, Marianne Jepson, Brenda Johnson and Phrosso Pfister to name just a few. I was honoured to be asked to write in there also. I hope to return to Portugal to examine again in the future, but most importantly I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Ana Mangeriçao for her dedication and immense loyalty to the ISTD for so many years and for many more to come. Cecchetti Summer Schools 2017
ELAINE MAYSON
Joshua Dart and Jaki Prescott report on this year’s superb Cecchetti Summer Schools held at Elmhurst Ballet School
Above: Cecchetti Teachers’ Summer School teaching faculty, pianists and course members striking a pose on the steps of Elmhurst Ballet School
Cecchetti Summer School for Teachers Cecchetti Summer School is a great opportunity for everyone who attends to be taught by some of the most inspiring and knowledgeable teachers in the world and to dance to the music played by hugely gifted pianists. I have attended summer school for a few years and have never failed to leave without a head brimming full of ideas and enthusiasm. This year Diane Van Schoor presented some proposed draft changes to the new Advanced 2 additional work and explained that any changes will be firmly rooted in the Cecchetti traditions. She reminded us of the need to show the true classical placement of arms and good use of eye-line. She also took teachers through the Diploma work in detail. Julie Cronshaw’s classes were based around the Bournonville technique and with music from that period. Julie used the classes to show the link between Cecchetti and Bournonville, which she followed with a talk about the historical connections between the two. David Yow taught some wonderful classes in his calm and
Summer school is an opportunity to be taught by some of the most inspiring and knowledgeable teachers in the world very encouraging manner. I enjoyed his class based on pirouettes and came away with ideas for building up confidence in turning. It was good to review the standard class exam syllabi and Sarah Wells guided us through this giving an insight not only into the exercises, but ideas to achieve the best from our pupils. This was all done with a sense of fun and an understanding of the reality of teaching children who only attend classes on a once a week basis and how to build up the strength in their technique. Jacqueline Davenport’s classes really stretched our brains as well as our feet. We all learnt how to start exercises at the barre without looking down first. Again, we all felt very encouraged by the advice and corrections that were given to us. So much was on offer in the week it is really difficult to list it all here – but briefly Jonathan Payn taught free classes as did Sara Gallie. Cara Drower led classes on the Licentiate and Fellowship examinations. Linda Isaacs took us through the Intermediate exam, and Christine Axon reviewed the Inter Foundation exam. We also had some interesting lectures: Diane Van Schoor on the making and progress of the Cecchetti Legacy Diploma DVD and Jacqueline Davenport on her experiences working with modern dance companies. It was also pleasure to meet Ginny Brown, Artistic Director of the ISTD who patiently answered many questions and gave us the latest information on the new teachers database and on the examination changes for the DDI/DDE and the Advanced 2 alternative pathways that will be introduced soon. As usual the whole week seemed to go too quickly and we left promising to try to return again next year. On behalf of all teachers who attended I would like to thank Christine and Linda for organising a fantastic week, and Catherine Hutchon and the Cecchetti committee for supporting this event. Cecchetti Summer School for Students I am a vocational student training at Elmhurst Ballet School where I have been studying since I was 11 years old and am now going into the upper school. This has been a very different experience for me, being invited to spend the week at the Cecchetti Students’ Summer School, which was held at Elmhurst. I immediately felt at home and relaxed and it helped that David Yow was one of the teachers this week as he is also my ballet teacher at school. However, we had other excellent teachers this week including Julie Cronshaw, Sara Gallie, Jonathan Payn, Gillian Toogood and very accomplished pianists.
36 DANCE ISSUE 481
In each class we seemed to learn something new, maybe it was the use of arms or the turn out and the right place to hold it from. I found that with each lesson came a new challenge to try and overcome and that the teachers pushed us and allowed us to express ourselves. We were taught the Peasant pas de deux from Giselle for our ballet piece by Jonathan Payn and David Yow, Sara Gallie and Gillian Toogood. I have previously learnt the solo and enjoyed their tutoring of this enormously. We were coached for the pas de deux work, which helped the men achieve what was needed to successfully help their partners, with Sara Gallie and Gillian Toogood helping the ladies. It is a dance that requires acting skills and feelings and our excellent teachers
DANCE Cecchetti
conveyed this to all the students so that we fully understood and were able to perform to the best of our ability. Helen Cox was our contemporary teacher. She taught a different style of contemporary, which really pushed us as dancers. We developed our own created sections combined into a five-minute dance. We worked in groups of twos and threes, which meant that we had to co-operate with each other and be open to ideas from our partners. I think the end result was a good one and I enjoyed working with Miss Cox and her inspiring teaching. The lyrical jazz classes were taught by Clare Isaacs, the first jazz exercises had us moving in a different way and I found this was fun and enjoyable. We created a piece that gave us the chance to show both partnering and group work. We were very lucky to have such wonderful live music to dance to all week played by the pianists, who were so professional. My final conclusion of the week has to be that this was a great experience and I’ve met new people and made friends that I will keep in touch with. I’ve really enjoyed seeing Elmhurst from a different perspective, helping where I could with different teaching staff and dancers. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to have specialist dance teachers that have given me a lot to think about and we all came away having learnt so much. Joshua Dart, Winner: Eve Pettinger Scholarship
In each class we seemed to learn something new

Cecchetti Summer School for Young Dancers Paris Brownlie Notley reports on this year’s exciting summer school held at Tring Park

I
t has been 35 years of Cecchetti Summer Schools at Tring Park. Once again a delightful group of students from the UK and Europe gathered to enjoy an inspiring week of dance. This year the theme for our special day of dance on Monday was Spirit of India. Anaya Bolar and Jaina Modasia were our guest teachers, offering their expertise in classical and folk Indian dance styles. In the evening, after amazing classes, a splendid dinner of delicious Indian food was enjoyed (thanks to the Tring Park catering staff again – I can never praise them highly enough). We then filled Tring Park’s Markova Theatre with our colourful Indian costumes and gave performances of the four dances that had been taught in such a short time. We were then treated to Anaya and Jaina performing solo works of their own: “Bharatanatyam is one of the ancient dance forms of India, originating from the South around 4th–6th Century BC, as a temple dance. This was one of the most enjoyable teaching experiences I have ever had. The young dancers were so enthusiastic and they really pushed themselves to learn a dance style that they have never experienced before. They learnt a great deal and put on an amazing show.” Anaya Bolar “I had a thrilling experience leading this workshop, and I spent the day teaching a folk style called Garba. It is a high-energy style incorporating many jumps and spins, and uses two sticks that are hit together in different sequence patterns. Learning a completely new dance style can take you out of your comfort zone yet the students at Cecchetti Summer School really threw themselves into the experience.” Jaina Modasia
It really was a wonderful week of variety, challenge, hard work and laughter
Above: Jaina Modasia, Paris Brownlie Notley and Anaya Bolar
The rest of our Summer School week was taken up with our customary Ballet Class every day, and other genre classes like Repertoire, Character, Contemporary, Classical Greek, Spanish, Jazz and Lyrical Jazz, and especially this year, Choreographic Skills and Workshop Classes in preparation for the annual Choreographic Competition at the end of summer school: “This Summer, after a break of two years, I returned with very fond memories of all the previous years. I was totally delighted and inspired to find yet another group of enthusiastic, gifted and talented young dancers. Together we investigated the mechanisms of balance and how, once our arms are free of balancing responsibilities, we can use them more efficiently for artistic and stylistic purposes. What left the deepest impression on me was how all the groups, regardless of age and experience, embraced and practiced the technique demonstrating noticeable improvements to their isolation and coordination skills in just one week.” Kasper Cornish “As we arrived the atmosphere was electric and all the dancers were busy rehearsing, making last minute alterations to their costumes and applying some very creative make up. It was so exciting to see how each young choreographer interpreted their music in a diverse variety of movements. They were so clever with their partner work and linked their sequences with different emotions. We laughed, had tears in our eyes and were entertained

from beginning to end. Thank you Paris, the students are extremely fortunate and will remember their ‘Spirit of Summer School’ experience for many years to come.”Juliet Locks and Lucy Pohl, Choreographic Adjudicators It really was a wonderful week of variety, challenge, hard work and laughter; and all left feeling they could not wait to do it all over again. Two examples of letters I received from satisfied parents, reflect the satisfaction and enjoyment of so many students: “Emily absolutely loved her time with you all. She was thrilled by all the teaching – we have heard lots about how great all the
classes were. A very warm thank you for looking after everybody so well and for giving the students such an extraordinary experience.” “Daisy is already asking if she can return next year, which is a lovely sign that she was happy whilst away.” Paris Brownlie Notley, Course Organiser Contact for all enquiries regarding Young Dancers Summer School 2018: email paris@parishelen.co.uk or mobile +44(0)7518 818620.

The Italian Cecchetti Association ANCEC hosted the competition this year from 31st July to 5th August 2017 and their Chair, Stefania Sansavini along with her sterling team of teacher/ organisers worked incredibly hard (in the hottest week of the year in Europe) to organise the competition for the 56 competitors and large audiences attending.

A very talented cohort of 12 young dancers were selected to represent the ISTD Cecchetti Society Faculty and received bursaries from The Cecchetti Society Trust. Dancers in the Junior Category (14–16 years) were Elliot Adams, Cameron-James Bailey, Joel Calstar-Fisher, Olivia Chang-Clarke, Lucy Fox, Finnley McSherry, Olivia Parham all from Elmhurst Ballet School and Arisa Haruki – The Ballet Garden, Japan. In the senior category (17–20 years) selected dancers were Ella-Louise Appleby and Chloe Howarth – KS Dance, Anabella Sanders – Tring Park School for the Performing Arts and Hamish Scott – Elmhurst Ballet School. Our young dancers were wonderful ambassadors throughout the week and were a great credit to their schools and to their competition coaches Simone Clarke, Kate Simmons, Gillian Toogood and David Yow. A panel of 12 international adjudicators chaired by Dame Monica Mason saw the students participate in a rigorous selection process, including ballet and contemporary classes on stage as well as performing their solos in each genre. All the students’ performances in the semi-finals were admirable and congratulations go to Olivia Chang-Clarke, Olivia Parham and Hamish Scott who gained places in the Gala final in the face of stiff competition and a wealth of talent from around the world.
Many congratulations also go to all the final winners of the competition from Australia, Canada and South Africa. Australia had a particularly strong team in all categories and Cameron Holmes was an outstanding dancer and a truly worthy winner of the Enrico Cecchetti Gold Medal. Full results can be seen at cecchetti.co.uk/ cicb-competion-2017. Many exciting International Scholarships were also offered for further training and Elliot Adams, Ella-Louise Appleby, Cameron-James Bailey, Joel Calstar-Fisher, Arisa Haruki, Finnley McSherry, Olivia Parham and Anabella Sanders and were all offered Scholarships. Special congratulations must also go to Hamish Scott who the week following the competition began his new contract with Birmingham Royal Ballet. The next CICB competition takes place in Sydney in 2020 so if you want to experience an exceptional International Cecchetti gathering of outstanding young dancers start saving now – it will be well worth it! It is with great pride that we announce all three categories were won by ISTD students

n 15th July the national youth dance platform U.Dance saw, for the first time, over 30 young dancers of Indian classical styles compete in the largest competition of its kind in the UK. NAVADAL, meaning ‘new shoots’, was a competition hosted by Akademi in partnership with the ISTD, in order to encourage and discover young talent across the Indian Classical dance genres. Soloists and groups performed Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Kuchipudi in front of an expert panel, for the chance to be named winners of their respective age categories. It is with great pride that we announce all three categories were won by ISTD students. The 11–16 solo category saw a range of performances, from those that showcased fast rhythmic sequences to those that told stories, from all parts of the traditional repertoire. Joanne Ro s e Thomas, Bharatanatyam student of Guru
Priya Sundar, performed a powerful piece on the Goddess Kali. Her embodiment of the Goddess’s vengeful energy through both nritta (formal technique) and abhinaya (dramatization through facial expression and hand gesture) impressed the audience and judges, and she was announced winner of the category. Jaina Modasia, a Kathak soloist from the 17–25 category impressed the judges with her piece called In Akbar’s Palace. Commended on BBC Young Dancer earlier this year as a category finalist, Jaina brought her experience to the stage at NAVADAL with a strikingly confident performance. The judges were particularly impressed at the ease and clarity with which Jaina executed difficult technique. The competition was stiff, with a host of excellent performances that came close to professional standard and she was delighted at having won her category, thanking the patience and hard work of her Guru Sujata Banerjee. The group category demanded an extra dimension of performance; the judges were observing how the dancers related to one another in each performance and how ambitiously the teachers had designed the formations and dynamics of the choreography. This category was won by group Sanskriti, Bharatanatyam students

of Guru Pushkala Gopal, as the judges were particularly impressed by their intention and connection. Of the five dance experts who were judging, Pali Chandra brought the ISTD eye to the panel and judging criteria. An internationally acclaimed exponent of Kathak, Pali is a previous committee member where she contributed towards the creation of the ISTD Kathak syllabus. We hope to be following the success of these young artists at the Bursary Awards where they are expected to apply, for a chance to win a considerable financial grant towards their training. We are proud of the faculty and the members for upholding an excellence in teaching that is shining through time and time again. Shivaangee Agrawal

The Baines Hewitt Award 2017 Award adjudicator, Guy Niblett reports

E
very year I look forward to the Baines-Hewitt scholarship class. The Award of £1,000, funded equally by the Imperial Classical Ballet Faculty and the Gordon Edwards Charitable Trust, is for a dancer up to a maximum age of 15 years old who has been accepted or who is already studying on a classical course at a leading ballet school either in the UK or abroad. The format is a non-syllabus ballet class at Advanced 1 level lasting 90 minutes. For a competition it’s a noticeably friendly affair with the participants’ parents and teachers able to watch the class from inside the studio. This year I had the honour to be invited as one of the Award adjudicators alongside my co-judge, the Royal Ballet Company First Soloist Helen Crawford. Helen, a former pupil of Linda Shipton, went on to train at The Royal Ballet School and joined the Royal Ballet Company in 1999. The night before the class Helen had been performing at the Royal Opera House dancing the role of Mitzi Caspar from Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s ballet Mayerling. It was very exciting for the young dancers to know they had such an esteemed
performer watching them and we were all grateful to Helen as she was giving up one of her rare days off to be an adjudicator.
It was very exciting for the young dancers to know they had such an esteemed performer watching them The class teacher was Tomoko Furuya Hristov, a Prix de Lausanne prize-winner and a former dancer with the Royal Ballet Company. The inspirational Kate Dickson accompanied her on the piano. We made our way into Ground Floor Studio at ISTD2 in readiness to meet our scholarship hopefuls. They ran into the studio groomed beautifully and presenting themselves as young ballerinas in the making. As expected there were a few nerves to begin with, but DANCE ISSUE 481

Award winner, Aoibh Ni Riain Broin with Adjudicators, Helen Crawford and Guy Niblett
Aoibh performed throughout the class with technical assurance, classical elegance and moving artistry as the dancers got into the rhythm of the class they soon relaxed and began performing to the best of their ability so much so I think at one point they might even have forgotten about all of us watching. The class itself was beautifully crafted, being a perfect blend of technical challenge combined with lots of opportunity for the candidates to display their own musical interpretation and artistry: something I have always found to be a particular strength of Imperial Ballet trained dancers. Helen and I didn’t confer very much during the class, we didn’t want to break the atmosphere by talking. We watched the dancers’ hard work as they showed their graceful lines and surprisingly quite diverse styles which posed us a few problems when it came to deciding who should be awarded the scholarship. Should we choose the technician, the performer or the one with potential? We debated back and forth as we put forward argument and counter argument for each candidate. This was after all quite a responsibility, a lot of money with the potential to make a significant difference to each of these young dancers’ future was at stake. It was an important decision, which we both took seriously.
After lengthy consideration we agreed on candidate number three whose name until that moment had been a mystery to us. Aoibh Ni Riain Broin from Ireland, a former pupil of Debbie Allen in Dublin who, by the time you are reading this will have completed her second year at the Central School of Ballet in London. Aoibh was our choice because she performed throughout the class with technical assurance, classical elegance and moving artistry that was a pleasure to watch. Aoibh joins the many other talented recipients of the Baines Hewitt scholarship who with the help of this Award have gone on to have their own careers as professional dancers. We will be following Aoibh’s future and the futures of all the other candidates of the class of 2017 with interest and wish them all the best of luck as they embark on this exciting time in their vocational ballet training. Thanks must go to the Gordon Edwards Charitable Trust and the Imperial Classical Ballet Faculty for providing this essential financial support for these deserving young artistes and thank you too “Miss Tomoko” for such an inspiring class. I’m already looking forward to 2018! Guy Niblett

It is devised to assist teachers with establishing the correct and safe technique for students studying classical ballet from 8 to 88 years! Following the courses at the Summer School, other regional courses are being organised to introduce The Teaching of Ballet Technique to teachers. The first will be held at the London Teachers’ Group on Sunday 24th September and further courses will be announced in DANCE and on the ISTD website during 2018. The course is accompanied by notes and a DVD, the cost of which is £50 if attending a course or £60 if bought without attending the course.
Primary, Grade 1 and Grade 2 New CDs The music for the Primary Grade and Grades 1 and 2 is being rerecorded together with some new pieces to give a greater variety of tempos and styles, specifically for use in examinations. These CDs (Primary–Grade 1 on one CD and Grade 2 on one CD) will be available from the Sales Department at the ISTD from January 2018 and will become compulsory in examinations from September 2018 worldwide.
CD Operators CD operators are not permitted to take notes regarding the content of the examination being given. It is also preferable that mobile phones are not taken into the examination studio. If they are, they should be turned off.
Mirrors Studio mirrors should be covered for examinations if the candidates are going to be facing them when they dance. In other circumstances it is preferable to cover them, but not compulsory.
Earrings Small stud earrings are permissible in examinations if they cannot be removed. This is preferable to plasters, which are unsightly and possibly uncomfortable for candidates.

Sequence Medallist Festival 2017
T
here was a full programme of events for eager Sequence dancers to take part in the annual Sequence Medallist Festival held on 11th June at Long Eaton, Derbyshire. Adjudicators, Martin Bird, Terry Hunt and Tracy Norris were introduced by Jill Bush, Sequence Faculty Chair, and proceedings began with the Classical Sequence category. Two Classical sequence dances, one with turned out feet and one with parallel feet, at each level from Social Dance Test to the highest grade were on show for this section. It was a pleasure to see some lovely dancing of different rhythms – Saunters, Classical Tangos, Classical Waltzes and lively Mazurkas. The Under-8s and Beginners were also catering for in each category. The Sequence 3-dance event split into two competitions – those yet to qualify and those already qualified for the Grand Finals at Blackpool – provided some beautiful dancing. The standard seems to rise every year. The Modern Sequence Competition (just one dance in this and the Latin Sequence event) was closely followed by the adjudicators’ testing task of choosing finalists from the crowded rounds of
Adult and Child Sindy Swing. The Latin sequence varied rhythms concluded the solo events. Couples competitions in each section gave the hard working teachers a well-earned breather, as they encouraged their pupils with their feet resting! Special acclaim should go to Robert and Louise Aldred and Jill Bush for doing so much to organize this event on behalf of the Committee with help from Katherine Costain, Sequence Faculty Co-ordinator. Thank you to the adjudicators, to Jill Bush for smooth compering (beyond compare?) to Karen Byron who provided some great tracks in sequence and to Sarah Bird for scrutineering. Diana Wykes

T
he Ballroom, Latin and Sequence Carl Alan Awards were held on Friday 19th May. Graham Oswick won the Carl Alan Inspirational Coach Award. He said: “To be rewarded and honoured by your peers for doing something that you love is so very special, I am still in shock. Thanks to the societies that nominated me, to the selection committee and to Mick and Lorna for continuing these prestigious Awards. Thank you, thank you, thank you”. Robert and Louise Aldred won the Outstanding Classical Sequence Partnership Award. They said: “We felt very honoured to be nominated for such an award and therefore to win one was a truly special moment. To have your work recognised and appreciated by your peers is a great accolade and we have also been privileged to have worked with some extremely dedicated people. We would like to thank the associations/societies that nominated us, the selection committee for voting for us and Mick and Lorna for continuing to host this prestigious event.” The Carl Alan Awards event is held annually in the United Kingdom, honouring people who have made a significant contribution to the dance and theatre industry, such as teachers,
performers and choreographers. They have been dubbed the Oscars of the dance world and are presented by Michael Stylianos and Lorna Lee, in co-ordination with the Theatre Dance Council International.

A TRIBUTE TO JOAN SOUTHWOOD (NÉE FIELD)
Above: Joan Field
Joan was a senior examiner for the ISTD and also served on the Sequence Faculty Committee for many years, including as Chair from 2002 until 2005. Here, Joan’s daughter pays tribute to her mother. My mum, Joan Field, was born in Sherburn, County Durham on 18th November 1928. From a young age, she showed a keen interest in dancing and took lessons in ballroom, tap and ballet. As a young woman she began a teaching career and took her first pupils in my nana’s sitting room by moving furniture aside and making a floor in the middle. She eventually acquired her own dance studio and taught children and adults ballroom and tap dancing. She had numerous formation teams, which competed at both Filey and Blackpool and returned with many trophies. Mum was also an adjudicator and travelled the country judging examinations at many dance
schools all over the country as well as in the north of England. She was awarded Life Membership of both the NCDTA and ISTD and more recently in 2009 all her achievements were honoured when she received the Carl Allan Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Dancing, presented for achievements in freestyle, theatre and ballroom dancing. Mum retired from professional dancing in 2006 after the death of her husband Reginald, whom she had met on the dance floor. More recently she suffered from dementia and memory loss but was always able to raise a smile when seeing the NCDTA newsletter. She passed away peacefully on 6th August 2017 at 7.30pm with her family beside her and has undoubtedly left a lasting legacy within the ballroom dancing world. Alison Donovan (Joan’s daughter) Further tributes will follow in the next issue of DANCE.

The Janet Cram Awards 2017 Adjudicator’s Report
PHOTOS BY JAMES HUDSON
This year I had the honour of being an adjudicator for the Finals of the Janet Cram Awards. I flew to the UK from Italy the day before, to find amazing weather. It was even warmer on the day of the Awards and I couldn't wait to get to the event venue to hopefully cool down and enjoy a day of what I knew would be fabulous dancing. On arrival I was greeted warmly and welcomed by colleagues. Everything was perfectly organised and under control, thanks to the hard work of Cathy Stevens and Jackie Barnes and to everyone who gave up their free time to help. After a cup of coffee and chat with friends I had time to have a peep at the Junior Finalists. Unfortunately I only managed to see some of the participants dance their solos. I say “unfortunately” because it was marvellous to watch these young, talented dancers perform with such confidence and enjoyment. I had the pleasure to be adjudicating the Senior Section of the Cram Awards, together with Jackie Hayward and Vivienne Saxton. They were lovely to work with, which made the experience all the more enjoyable.
64 DANCE ISSUE 481
As the participants did the famous “walk round” enthusiasm was buzzing in the air, not only from the spectators, but also from the participants themselves. I knew straight away that this was going to be a very challenging experience and so it proved. An inspired class was conducted by Ruth Armstrong, who managed to bring out not only quality and style, but also love of dance from all the participants. She gave them the possibility to excel and to reach their full potential. This was followed by 32 fabulous solos, which were creative and beautifully danced, in the hope of winning the ultimate prize. The Premiers made a fitting Finale and their maturity and ability were evident throughout. It was a wonderful mixture of enthusiasm, strong technique and innovative choreography. Once again we were treated to a magnificent Showcase and I feel extremely privileged to have been part of this prestigious event. Cheryl Gill SEE PAGE 54 FOR MORE IMAGES

DANCE Modern Theatre
Remembering Matt Mattox Memories of a dance legend By Pamela Eddleston There are times in life when a totally unexpected gift lands at your feet. This year that unexpected and precious gift appeared in my dance class at Western University in Canada in the person of Lee Mattox, grandson of Matt Mattox the famous jazz dance legend, a master teacher who inspired so many of our dancers and choreographers during the 1970s and 80s and taught them how to look at theatrical and jazz dance with a respect for line, grounding, isolations, rhythm and integrity. Indeed much of our Modern Theatre Dance Syllabus has a base in the freestyle jazz technique of Matt Mattox. Lee is an accomplished dancer showing exquisite line, economy of movement, smooth grounded movement so reminiscent of his grandfather. What a gift. He was generous with his memories and information and my class and I were lucky to have the benefit of a workshop with him complete with unpublished early filming of Matt Mattox himself dancing some of the exercises and sequences he was devising and perfecting during the early days of developing his unique style. It was a great lesson and reiterated the importance of a sound and thoroughly understood basic technique, which I believe is still apparent in our original Intermediate Modern syllabus, still worthy of in-depth study before a logical progression to the technical demands of Advanced 1 and 2. In her excellent article Everything Old is New Again (DANCE, October–December 2012) Tereza Theodoulou wrote succinctly about the connections between the Modern Theatre Dance syllabus and the development of modern jazz dance, in particular citing the influence of Matt Mattox from whom she experienced personal influence and inspiration. Matt Mattox was a protégé of Jack Cole, who is considered to be the father of modern jazz dance. Jack Cole rose to fame for his unique movement style based on his background of the Cecchetti method of ballet, modern dance acquired during his Denishawn and Humphrey-Weidman Company days, Indian ethnic techniques and the joyous movement of isolations and rhythms of the popular jazz music.
It was a style that all aspiring dancers of the time wanted to learn It was a style that all aspiring dancers of the time wanted to learn and was seen in films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Kismet and Some Like It Hot. Jack Cole’s work would create defining moments in the careers of actresses such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Anne Miller. Dancers and choreographers would change the nature of films and Broadway. During the late 1940s and onward the names Luigi, Giordano, Matt Mattox and Fosse would emerge to develop their own codified jazz techniques. Performing a mix of jazz styles dancers such as Gene Kelly, Jerome Robbins, Gwen Verdon and
66 DANCE ISSUE 481
Bob Fosse spread awareness of the dance style and the joy it could create. Technically there were similarities in this developing art but each one took a concept and expanded on it. A common factor to emerge was the placement of the upper body, isolating different parts of the body so that they could move precisely and independently to allow for sharp dynamic movements reflecting the African roots of early jazz dance.
A master teacher who inspired so many of our dancers and choreographers Matt Mattox preferred to call his technique 'freestyle'. His classes were rhythmically challenging and a demanding combination of ballet, modern, flamenco, tap dance and jazz. Originally his work was created to help dancers acquire jobs in musical theatre but it became much more. His initial pursuit of jazz dance studying with Jack Cole on Broadway was refined and elaborated to a unique technique, separating from the typical high-energy Broadway style. He became well known for his choreography for film, Broadway, concert dance and ballet. He eventually moved to London in 1970 where he founded his JazzArt Company and then on to Paris in 1975 where he opened a school and established a legacy. In 1981 he married dancer Martine Limeul, moved his base to her school in the south of France and continued to refine his technique. Matt Mattox taught a heavy schedule of master classes throughout Europe and Scandinavia until his death in 2008. To conclude I have a story lovingly written and sent to me by our own Christina Ballard which perfectly illustrates the experience of a young dancer at one of the Matt Mattox workshops. Pamela Eddleston
By Christina Ballard One of my most inspirational memories connected with dance was being part of a Jazz Dance class with the amazing Matt Mattox. This was at the Dance Centre in Covent Garden after I had graduated from Bush Davies in Romford where I was fortunate to have been tutored by the late Joyce Percy for Ballet and Daphne Peterson for Modern Theatre Dance. The class was full of American dancers and not knowing anyone I felt very much the English Rose. There was lots of noise in the room when suddenly the door opened and in he walked. Immediately there was a hush and a collective stillness and focus from all of us. I don't remember him saying anything except “Warm up”, and he began to beat his tambourine to prepare us for the rhythm and speed. It was obviously a set warm up, which everyone knew except me, so I just had to follow the person in front.
DANCE Modern Theatre
It started with upward stretches, ripples through the spine into forward stretch, then body bounces and a quick recovery to standing. This was repeated several times and then on to the next section. You needed to be a well-trained dancer to keep up with the moves, the speed and technique. I was very glad I had received such good training at Bush Davies. We then proceeded on to an isolation exercise which involved poly-rhythms, alternating from turn out and parallel leg lines, complicated arms and leg and hip movements. Again I just had to copy the person in front. I can remember so very clearly that during this exercise he decided to walk around and observe people whilst beating the drum and cueing. To my horror he stood behind me for what seemed like an hour and I felt like I was taking an exam but then he whispered in my ear, “you're doing great kid”. I nearly fainted with relief and exhilaration and floated for the next two weeks slightly above the ground. I also remember very well the sequence for kicks and pirouettes, which I loved and went on to teach my senior students. I can still do it today although the legs don’t go up so high. He was a commanding presence in the class and demanded great respect and total concentration from all of us. There was a driving pace and atmosphere from start to finish and we simply wanted to work so hard to achieve our best delivery of his wonderful
work. The class was about 44 years ago but I can still picture it in my mind. I was also able to take class with Luigi who had a completely different style and delivery, slower smoother, with more Blues feeling – very rhythmic and with fluid expression through the body compared with Matt’s work, which was fast and furious. It was fantastic to learn from these two great masters of jazz and to be able to pass on their different techniques to my own students. I look back over my life and realise that although it was a relatively late age to study full time (I was 21 years old when I went to Bush but had studied ballet from a young age) it has provided me with a joyful life of dance, not just teaching but being connected to fantastic people gifted in their artistry and skill and I have made many wonderful friends along the way. Christina Ballard

ANNOUNCING THE APPOINTMENT OF THE FACULTY CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR The dynamic duo is back! Like all of the Society’s faculties, the Modern Theatre is never one to stand still. Tereza, as the newly elected Chair and Lyn as Vice Chair, together with a hugely talented committee of dedicated members, work so well and tirelessly together to ensure the best artistic development for our much loved Faculty. We must take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Myra Tiffin for all of her dedicated work and for her Chairship over the last six years. Inspired by Mary Archbutt, Murielle Ashcroft, Doreen Bird, Patricia Crail, Daphne Peterson and Alison Willett we aim to keep the important values of our work, which these incredibly talented and innovative ladies created, behind our future development. Suffice to say, we have many ideas for new, creative work that will be relevant and inclusive not only for today’s dancers and teachers but tomorrow’s too. Watch this space! Carl is passionate about politics, philosophy, writing, chess and craft beer. He also enjoys freelancing as an A-Level English Literature tutor and has proudly watched pupils move on to degrees at institutions such as Queen’s University Belfast and Cambridge University.
Georgina Winterborne Education & Training Assistant Georgina began her dance training at the age of seven when she joined the Professional Associate Course at Italia Conti Arts Centre in Guildford. She successfully gained ISTD exams in Modern Theatre, Imperial Ballet and Tap to Advanced level. After completing her studies at Italia Conti, Georgina followed her passion for dance by gaining a BA Hons in Dance from De Montfort University, Leicester. Whilst studying for her university degree she engaged in many different aspects of dance including teaching and leading, dance history and choreography. Georgina is delighted to be joining the ISTD to work in the role of Education & Training Assistant and is very much looking forward to broadening her knowledge of the dance sector.
Danielle Wojtylo
Urja Desai Thakore is a leading Kathak dancer in the UK. She has studied under the able guidance of her Guru, Padmabhushan Kumudini Lakhia. She is a graceful and emotive dancer who is renowned for her love of Abhinay, clear but subtle movements and technical strength. Her energetic choreographic style is highly regarded by both traditionalists and modernists alike. Urja has received her Masters in South Asian Dance with Choreography major. She is also on the ISTD’s Classical Indian Dance Faculty Committee. She has been recognised as the next leader in arts by One Dance UK. Urja established Pagrav Dance Company in 2008 in the UK. The uniqueness of the Company lies in Urja’s ability to depict the modern world and its interpretation through traditional style. The Company’s current aims are two-fold: to teach, promote Kathak in its purest form as a classical dance technique and then challenge its traditional artistic boundaries with contemporary and cross-discipline collaboration by creating new movement vocabulary. Urja was the co-choreographer of Bells for Akademi, an outdoor spectacular, and was the assistant choreographer to Kumudini Lakhia for the piece created for the Swapnagata Festival. She has received several commissions, such as: Medway Fuse Festival, Daredevas, Commonwealth Games, Motus Dance Festival, Kadam. She received the Choreogata and Utkarsh award from Akademi in collaboration with the South Bank Centre in 2103 and 2015. She has toured her own productions of Kathak Through Ages, Baharan, Hats, Gulmohor, Anant-Endless, I, Within, Poised and Detox to widespread acclaim. She was commissioned in 2015 and 2017 to create a new solo for the finalist of South Asain Strand in the BBC Young Dancer competition.
Examinations Officer Danielle began her dance training at the age of three. She attended Tozer Dance Studios in Nottinghamshire where she undertook examinations in both the ISTD and RAD syllabus alongside performing in various shows and competitions. Danielle went on to study Dance Performance at Middlesex University and whilst there became involved with the university cheerleading team where she continued to perform and compete around the country. Throughout her study she developed a keen interest in Dance Journalism and hopes to pursue this at a later stage. Danielle joined the ISTD in June 2015 in the examinations department where she has worked in all areas in the department and is well versed in the processes within UK examinations. She has enjoyed getting to know some of our many examiners and teachers over the past two years.

utism with Attitude street dance group from Hillingdon Manor School, Uxbridge, made history when they qualified as the first special needs dance team to qualify for the United Dance Organisation’s (UDO) World Championships in Glasgow 24th–27th August 2017 and the UDO European Championships in Kalkar in Germany in May 2018. Hillingdon Manor School is an Outcomes First Group centre of excellence in education and development for children aged 5–19 with an autistic spectrum condition (ASC). The School is delighted with its success and staff are helping them both to hone their dance skills and to prepare for their role as ambassadors, showing what people with autism can achieve. Now Autism with Attitude is all set to represent the UK at this forthcoming international event.
They were the first dance team with special needs to take part in the event Many of the young people have developed their skills since attending Hillingdon Manor. Their teacher Jonathan Baron said: “The SEN dance world is currently very small and in fact they were the first dance team with special needs to take part in the event.” The school has found that children with autism respond well to the structure and discipline of dance and it can help children who struggle with other forms of communication to express themselves. Students are expected to work hard and the lessons are physically demanding building muscle memory, balance, body awareness, coordination and spatial awareness. The secret of their success, according to Jonathan Baron, is hard work, discipline, preparation and practice. Autism with Attitude had performed in shows and made videos so there was no doubt about their talent or commitment but he needed to be sure that
they could manage a competition in unfamiliar surroundings. He need not have worried. With support from the management and staff at the Manor in the run up to the competition, they took it all in their stride. “It is a dream come true for me,” said Jonathan. “As a dancer myself I’ve obviously done competitions but it’s quite emotional taking a group of young people with autism into this arena. We keep setting them fresh challenges and now they are taking the mainstream world by storm. This is just huge; they are making history, acting as envoys for all those with special needs around the country.”
The school has found that children with autism respond well to the structure and discipline of dance

Teaching Qualification Assessments Regulated Teaching Qualifications Below is the Teaching Qualifications Calendar for the current Diploma in Dance Instruction and Diploma in Dance Education until the end of 2018, to allow Approved Dance Centres to plan their delivery. Note that entry dates for Health and Safety and Lifespan Development examinations have been separated for EU and UK Approved Dance Centres because of the extra time potentially needed for translation of papers. All fees and relevant work or information should be sent to the Professional Qualifications Assistant in the Customer Services
& Quality Assurance Department, by the Approved Dance Centre with which the learner is registered, by the closing dates indicated. Although the ISTD will make every effort to adhere to these dates, they are always subject to review and potential alteration. Please note: This is for the existing Diploma in Dance Instruction and Diploma in Dance Education qualifications, to allow for the transition to all units of the new Diploma in Dance Education from September 2018.

The Imperial Benevolent Fund offers support to deserving Members and their dependents worldwide, whatever their age, who need help at certain times in their lives. If you need our help, or know of anyone who does, please get in touch. I have been incredibly grateful for the payments of my mortgage the Benevolent Fund has provided over the last five months. Due to the circumstances with my health I would have been lost without their kind and generous support.
Words cannot express the gratitude and relief the contribution by the Imperial Benevolent Fund has brought to us. Please express our sincere thanks to the Trustees for this help.
