LIMASSOL for cruise lovers exclusive 15
Maria Stylianou Michaelidou Manager Limassol Tourism Board
Situated in the south-eastern corner of the Mediterranean with a unique fusion of influences from the region, Limassol has much to offer to cruise lovers that either visit the port as part of their cruise itinerary or choose to take a cruise from Cyprus to nearby destinations. Limassol is a city where the traditional and the modern coexist, offering desirable contemporary facilities yet still extending the local warm hospitality which characterises the island of Cyprus. This distinct cosmopolitan seaside destination is rich in history and culture, and its special characteristics include the fact that it is conveniently located, both within the island and on the map, which makes exploring easy, whether it be island-wide or to nearby destinations. Limassol port is the largest port of the island, located on the South coast of Cyprus at a distance of 60 km from Larnaca
and Pafos International Airports. The port’s marine area covers one square kilometre, while its terrestrial area covers 1.3 km2. It has modern, specialised facilities and equipment to serve different categories of customers and different types of cargo as well as of ships and passengers, offering fast, safe, reliable and unimpeded links between the island and the outside world. The Port Authorities having set high standards of objectives for Limassol port, have developed a new passenger area which consists of an innovative modern building with sheltered
areas covering 8,500 m2, parking spaces and pedestrian and vehicle passages. The project is expected to be in operation soon. The Limassol port is a significant cruise centre. It is certainly one of the most important cruise centres in the Eastern Mediterranean and is included in the itineraries of many international cruise ships sailing in the region. It is also a permanent base for Cypriot-owned cruise ships which, seasonally carry out excursions in the region, to Greece, the Greek islands, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon and Syria.

2.6x FASTER THAN ANY OTHER AIRLINER
Mach 2.2 is 2.335 km/h, 2.6x faster than other airliners
AIRLINERS MACH 0.85 CONCORDE MACH 2.0 BOOM MACH 2.2
A company called Boom Technology Inc. has unveiled plans for a supersonic airplane of the same name, which is being developed as a replacement for Concorde. Today, international travel means jet-lag and days of lost productivity and family time. But imagine leaving New York in the morning, making afternoon meetings in London, and being home to tuck your kids into bed. Unlike Concorde, flying Boom is affordable; the same price as business class. This isn’t science fiction and its possible now with today’s aerodynamics, carbon fiber composites, and the latest engine technology. The Boom airplane would travel at Mach 2.2 more than twice the speed of sound and 2.6 times faster than any other airliner and fly from New York to London in 3.4 hours, San Francisco to Tokyo in 4.7 hours or Los Angeles to Sydney in 6 hours. The great thing about the airplane is that all the key technology on the airplanes, the aerodynamics, engines, materials are taken from other
aircrafts that already flying today. For example the engine is an adaptation from the engine of current commercial aircrafts. According to Boom, carbon composites can withstand higher temperatures than the aluminium alloys used in Concorde, yet are cheaper than the titanium and other exotic alloys used in military aircraft. They’re also lighter, which allows the aircraft to fly faster and more efficiently. Combined with advanced engines, the company believes that the finished product will be 30% more efficient than Concorde, and that through the use
of computer simulations development can be achieved in record time. Seats will be similar to standard domestic first class and will distributed on 40 seats in two rows either side of the aisle, meaning that every passenger will get a direct view of the curvature of the earth as the plane cruises at 60,000 ft. The airplane is currently in the prototyping phase; however, the team is all set to fly a test aircraft in late 2017, following speeding records near Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The most expensive hub in the world
The New World Trade Centre transportation hub, called the Oculus, is officially open to the public. The station, which replaces one destroyed in the 9/11 attacks, was designed in 2004 by Santiago Calatrava and cost €3.4 billion, almost double its original cost. Ground wasn’t broken on the new World Trade Centre Transportation Hub and Shopping Centre until 2010, and the construction took a decade. Cost overruns have been blamed on the architect’s demands and the complexity of building it. The hub connects Port Authority Trans-Hudson trains to New Jersey with 11 New York City subway lines and ferry services.
It includes 7,000 m2 of food and retail, complete with an Apple Store, and additional ways in and out to accommodate all the anticipated foot traffic.
The hub is airy, white and peaceful with a skylight, and it is considered a way to honour those who died in the 9/11 attacks.

business lifestyle As a footballer, David Beckham had it all – the looks, the successful wife, the family, the stylish suits and the big-money deals. But with his boots hung up, the earnings continue to grow. On a warm, late-spring evening in Paris, tears are rolling down David Beckham’s face. It’s a private moment witnessed by millions. Emotion overtook the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder as he faced every footballer’s greatest fear. An East Londoner whose fame outgrew his considerable talent, realising that his sport – which in two decades made him a multi-millionaire – no longer had a place for him. Unlike Beckham’s Hollywood career narrative, taking him to the greatest football clubs in the greatest leagues (not to mention Preston North End and LA Galaxy), things didn’t end with a stunning free-kick or trademark assist. Rather, a tear-stricken veteran being skinned in the build-up to an irrelevant Brest goal in an end-of-season stroll. Before being substituted.
David Beckham’s Business Machine
As the fourth official held a board indicating the famous No.23 was to be substituted, Beckham ceremoniously embraced the Parisian ovation and each team-mate, as his wife and parents wiped their eyes alongside Nicolas Sarkozy in the stands. A slow walk to the Parc Des Princes touchline, and the dashing prince of modern football was gone. After 834 games, 146 goals and a few highprofile red cards, Beckham had – at 8:42pm on 18 May 2013 – officially retired. But there are retirements. And there are retirements. Fast forward 18 months, when US business magazine Forbes reported the biggest annual earnings of Beckham’s career, a barely comprehensible €61m (€19m more than his previous best in 2012), making him the second-highest-paid retired sportsman in the world – behind Nike billionaire Michael Jordan. With business assets in fashion, beverages, leisure and a sporting franchise in development, 2015 could see him crack the €88,3m mark. This, despite having not kicked a ball competitively since leaving that pitch in Paris. Welcome to David Beckham 2.0 – entrepreneur, business, brand.
New Ventures “I was a footballer for 22 years but the success I had created something for me off the field as well,” said Beckham recently. “This is a

passage of my life where I’m going into the business world. It’s a different kind of excitement to stepping on the pitch. Nothing will, or can, replace that.” And yet, at 40, Beckham has never been busier. He left football a champion – the 2013 French title his tenth and final league medal. As a player, he was distinguished by incredibly accurate delivery allied to a tremendous work ethic. Off the field, he was marked by an underestimated ability to seize an opportunity to heighten his profile. Upon seeing the Spice Girls’ “Say You’ll Be There” video in 1996, he ambitiously informed team-mates that “Posh” was the woman he would marry. Significantly higher profile at the time, Victoria provided David with a springboard to fame beyond football’s confines. The former England captain was always a master manipulator of image, whether being suspiciously conspicuous in so many goal celebrations, or simply making a provocative style choice. His 2003 decision to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid came
when being a Galactico was the ultimate accolade for superstar footballers (as opposed to actual trophies, as his one in four La Liga seasons testifies). Even the LA Galaxy move was a calculated risk – thrusting him into football’s final frontier but also the American mass consciousness.
Choosing LA Provided David Beckham with the Chance to Position Himself Among Hollywood’s A List Retirement from professional sport is just the next step in the Beckham journey, and it is now allowing him to explore his entrepreneurial ambitions, switching attention from familiar endorsements (two decades with Adidas, one with Coty’s Beckham fragrances) to expansive ventures in new markets. “Timing is everything,” says Paul Smith, CEO of celebrity marketing analysts Repucom. “Moves to Real Madrid and LA Galaxy were timed to perfection, where his profile was established in ideal conditions to either be among football’s elite, or as an ambassador for a growing sport. Choosing LA provided Beckham with the chance to position himself among Hollywood’s A list.” Beckham, never short of ambition in his playing career, is no longer satisfied simply selling his image to H&M or Breitling, or closer to home with Sky Sports and Sainsbury’s. In 2014, he negotiated a retail partnership with Hong Kong giants Global Brands Limited to control a 50% stake of a range of lifestyle brands built around his image and influence. “Beckham increasingly plays a significant role in his business ventures,” says Kurt Badenhausen, senior editor of Forbes. “Yes, he will use his own likeness to promote his partners but he increasingly wants to control equity stakes in deals instead of just being the face of a product.”
Emporio Armani Underwear ads (with wife Victoria)
Not that the face isn’t still one of his key assets. October 2014 saw Beckham riding through the Scottish Highlands doing his best Daniel Craig impression for Haig Club whisky. The Guy Ritchie advert (Skyfall reimagined with hipsters and Alt-J) heralded the relaunch of the single-grain whisky distillers, into which drinks giants Diageo had pumped €89.5m – plus secured Beckham as a “strategist”. His partnership
Team Beckham Aware of this crossover appeal, Beckham has been able to negotiate better deals by offering brand direction in addition to endorsement. But this is something that was only achievable via a painstakingly constructed public and commercial image. Behind every great man is, they say, a great woman. And behind the Beckhams is an even greater team of public relations and marketing gurus. Victoria has been integral to Brand Beckham, not just in forming one half of the celebrity package but also financially rivalling her husband since moving into fashion. Her self-titled fashion label has twice been named Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards and generates over €76.5m a year in revenue. The ups and downs of their marriage have been well documented, but their relationship works symbiotically to support each other’s post-music and sport careers. Footwork Productions Ltd, whose sole revenue is the “exploitation of David Beckham’s name and image rights”, was set up in 2003, following his split with agents SFX. Victoria, as company secretary, ensures David, as employee, is paid almost the entirety of profit (€18m in 2013). Team Beckham is now bolstered by a new generation, with the rising public profiles of aspiring footballer Brooklyn, 17, and Burberry model Romeo, 13. Central to the 40-year-old’s commercial strength is his ability to switch between the roles of family man, sex symbol, sports star and Hollywood matinee idol. “His personality now represents maturity, a man who can already look back at an illustrious career,” says Repucom’s Paul Smith. “He can play the father figure, his family name is now intrinsic in the world of fashion and his sons are becoming celebrities in their own right. As they grow, so too will David’s ‘legacy’.”

Revitalising a low-key brand to attack the high-end spirit market is a major challenge, but the presence of Beckham opens lucrative, hard-to-crack territories such as China, where he is already the face of Jaguar, the Chinese Super League and China Auto Rental. Repucom, who analyse public perception of celebrities across global markets representing over 1.6 billion people, rank Beckham as their No.1 celebrity for endorsements and trendsetting, particularly in new overseas territories. “In the UK, his profile since retirement has noticeably dropped,” says Smith. “In the US, however, retirement has had the reverse effect. In 2008, only 81.6% of Americans knew who he was but around his retirement in 2013, awareness spiked at 88.9%. This huge jump shows that his MLS gamble has certainly paid off and is paying dividends. He is today one of the most marketable celebrities on the planet.”

Jaguar – another brand for David Beckham
“Team Beckham” was originally coined by Simon Fuller – the sports and entertainment entrepreneur – who recognised that together, David and Victoria could grow a brand way beyond the confines of sport and music. Infamous for creating Pop Idol and the Spice Girls, Fuller became their key advisor with his two management companies, 19 and XIX, overseeing most of their career moves since 2003.
Team Beckham is Now Bolstered by a New Generation, with the Rising Profiles of Brooklyn, 17, and Romeo, 13 The enigmatic Fuller, born in Hastings but raised on an army base in Ghana, conquered the sporting
world in a way few appreciate. He manages Britain’s biggest stars, such as Andy Murray and Sir Bradley Wiggins, and secured Steve McManaman’s groundbreaking Bosman transfer out of Liverpool. Far more than just a Mr 10 Per Cent, Fuller holds an equal partnership in the Haig Club and Global Brands deals, bringing the vision and acumen where Beckham brings image and influence. It was Fuller who negotiated Beckham’s 2007 LA Galaxy transfer, which not only opened the US commercial market but also the opportunity for their most ambitious and challenging project yet: the launch of a Miami MLS franchise.
Taking Miami Even today, David Beckham’s LA Galaxy deal drops jaws. Among the huge figures (€198m for an initial five years), a clause passed almost unnoticed containing an option to purchase an MLS franchise for a discount €20.4m. Eight years on, this appears a masterstroke, given the €48.5m Manchester City paid – with the New York Yankees baseball team – to launch their New York City expansion in 2013. Beckham’s choice of Miami also looks shrewd, with South Florida’s soccer-mad two million-plus Hispanic population an instant potential fanbase. At the franchise unveiling in February 2014, it certainly seemed Beckham was back in the game. “Sport remains at the core of what Beckham represents,” Forbes’ Kurt Badenhausen believes. “The plan was always likely to be selling a chunk of his
A global money-making machine, with a clearly defined idea of his own brand and a handpicked team around him, every action he takes will be strategised. He’s not quite Richard Branson yet, but David Beckham is a man with a plan. Whether it’s cars and airlines next – as Repucom predict – or something unexpected, it will most likely be another victory for the man who walked from that Paris pitch in tears. Retirement, in his own words, has “been fun so far”. In excess €166m-worth of fun, to be exact.
MLS franchise to capitalise on the discounted option he has to buy. But he would remain an owner and a significant part of the franchise going forward.” Yet 16 months since that initial fanfare, Beckham remains “frustrated” with the inability to secure the most important asset for any new sport franchise: a stadium. A spectacular 25,000-seater seafront location was rejected as “inappropriate” by the city mayor, while red tape held up efforts to find another space to develop plans are now well underway to build Beckham and Fuller’s dream stadium [Previously, the ground share options were unappealing, with Miami Dolphins’ 75,540-seat Sun Life Stadium and the local university’s 20,000-seater being too big and too underdeveloped respectively]. It had originally been a rare and chastening defeat for Team Beckham, who are used to doors swinging open at the mention of the B-word. But they stayed quiet, with little public lobbying, and worked through local opinion seems and the political complexity of Florida State politics. Thankfull the MLS are no longer getting twitchy safe in knowing thaBeckham is still a huge asset to the league. Ultimately, Miami is just another business opportunity for Beckham. While the situation would be enough to drive many to reach for a bottle of Haig Club, ultimately he would walk away before being dragged into a very public failure. ‘It’s been fun’.
19 exclusive 15
Despite this, with a growing business empire and a brand that grows stronger with each new socialmedia account and venture launched, it would take a brave person to bet against Beckham Empire succeeding in Miami. Whether we will again see him involved in English football, given he declares “no interest” in coaching or management, is up for debate. But then, Beckham is no longer English property.

5 Coolest watches of Baselworld 2016
Baselworld is the world’s largest jewellery and watch fair. Each year all of the big brands gather to show off their latest timepieces. These pieces are mechanical marvels that display extreme craftsmanship. Times are tough for the watch industry, with economic instability and systemic issues of product over-production to blame. You’d think that major watch brands would buckle down on spending and merely focus on selling what already works but despite that, watch companies are constantly proving that there is still magic in the watch industry.

Ulysse Nardin Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon Ulysse Nardin has been inspired by the world of boating at least a few dozen times over the years, and new interpretations continue to manifest from that, such as this Ulysse Nardin Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon. The Grand Deck takes this nautical inspiration to a new level, using tiny winches and cables to drive the retrograde minutes needle across the expansive dial. Those cables are made from tiny strands of Dyneema, a high-strength fiber that is actually used for sailboat rigging. The dial is made from teak wood, as found on boat decks for centuries. This watch comes in a 44mm-wide 18k white gold case limited to just 18 pieces and at a price of €280,000.

Hublot has created the Big Bang Unico Sapphire straight from sapphire, without losing sapphire’s unique and rare character. The case middle, bezel and back of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire are cut from blocks of sapphire, a material which is almost as hard and scratch-resistant as diamond. Its skeleton dial, made from transparent resin, reveals all the gears of the movement and its finishes. Complementing its ethereal silhouette, its strap – transparent – is invisible so that the skin can be seen through it. Kuvée: The Smart Wine Bottle that Keeps Wine Fresh
A fresh bottle of wine is great, but it usually spoils within three to five days of popping the cork. A Boston startup has now redesigned the wine bottle to make it smarter and keep wine fresh for up to 30 days. Kuvée is a wine dispenser that prevents oxygen from seeping inside and users just insert one of the wines into the Kuvée Bottle and pour – as simple as placing a coffee capsule in a Nespresso machine.
The entire system consists of a Kuvée bottle and 750ml Kuvée wines. To enjoy your wine using the device, simply slip one of the hand-selected California wines into the Kuvée Bottle and pour. The patented valve system prevents oxygen from touching the wine, so it stays fresh for a full 30 days. As a result, consumers can open multiple wines and enjoy them without fear that the leftovers will spoil. The Bottle is designed with a Wi-Fi connected touch screen on the front that shares food pairing and serving tips. It also notifies you the number of glasses left in each wine and tells the story of how each wine was made. The Kuvée wine collection features 50 different wines from some of the best wineries in California, such as Boony Doon Vineyard, Schug, B.R Cohn and Pine Ridge.

masters of the golden age
Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ work is known for its entrepreneurial ingenuity. His latest collaboration is an art publication – launching initially in a limited edition – with Amsterdam’s renowned Rijksmuseum, home to Golden Age artists such as Rembrandt, van Ruysdael, Steen and Hals. A “coffee-table” edition of the book (€125) will be available from September, but a limited edition (€6,500, 70cm x 50cm x 9cm) was launched last April, crafted in leather with silver plating and printed with high-pigmented inks. The museum’s Gallery of Honour is the source of the collaboration, a place where “the masters of the Golden Age hang between portraits of unknown craftsmen,” says Dutch art history expert Marko Kassenaar, who explains that the building’s original architect, Pierre Cuypers, “wanted to show that creativity and inspiration are attainable for everyone”.
His approach to this latest project – three years in the making – is markedly similar, bringing together the ideas of 30 global designers, thought leaders and craftspeople in Rijks, Masters of the Golden Age. The contributors have turned their attention to iconic paintings from the Rijksmuseum, including Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid.

Seeing the contributors’ perceptive reactions to the works has the same thrill as eavesdropping on visitors to an exhibition, except that, instead of craning your neck to see over someone’s shoulder, the works are available close up, in glorious colour, using fine printing techniques. Also available to order is an art edition (price on request, 70cm x 50cm x 9cm), which is crafted completely by hand in leather with gold plating and handwritten calligraphy – essentially your own manuscript. Like the limited edition, it comes with a specially designed table stand, protective sleeve, white gloves and Behind the Scenes book, which will appeal to collectors. Bespoke elements include calligraphy in the buyer’s language of choice, the addition of a family coat of arms and unique artworks by the book’s contributors. “It’s a book about how the greatest masterpieces influence how we see the world today,” says Wanders. In this, it is on its way to being a work of art in its own right.
Experimental chef Ferran Adrià comments on a van Dijck still life (above) and compares food in a painting to food on a plate – “The plate and the painting share almost everything, except for smell and taste”; cult filmmaker and photographer Anton Corbijn is drawn to the play of light and dark in van Ruisdael’s Winter Landscape; and designer Angela Missoni

It’s a design philosophy that chimes well with Wanders’ own as he believes in the collaboration between the designer, craftsperson and user, therefore rejecting old dogmas. Moooi, the platform for global design talent of which Wanders is co-founder and art director, is a prime example of how he likes to work. Combining the talents of 30 designers, Moooi is known for its daring, playful but timeless furniture and lighting designs.

the partnership established with rock music’s living legends – The Rolling Stones – that the brand with the guiding star has been accompanying on stages around the world since 2014. Thus, when the renowned English band is giving a concert in Cuba for the first time ever in their legendary career, Zenith is naturally right there beside them. A first foray onto the island for the British group”. As a wind of openness and freedom is blowing across Cuba, this open-air concert by the rock legends is a powerful symbol that will go down in the history books. To accentuate the legendary nature of this event, the Manufacture is dedicating one of its prestigious timepieces to the stellar musicians. An exclusive five-piece limited edition of the Academy
Christophe Colomb model by Zenith combines cutting-edge mechanics and top-flight artistry in a vibrant tribute to the global rock stars. Signature symbols Providing a perfect illustration of Zenith’s creative daring, the enamel dial of the Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to The Rolling Stones highlights the excellence of the artistic crafts cultivated within the Manufacture in Le Locle. Its generous 45mm diametre rose gold case is topped by a domed sapphire crystal. The famous Rolling Stones logo, topped by a dedicated displaying the 50-hour power reserve, appears to burst out of the enamelled base adorned with the British flag. Now an instantly recognisable symbol of rock, the
Legendary precision The exceptional nature of the Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to The Rolling Stones is powered by a movement combining two mechanisms guaranteeing extreme precision: a regulating organ with a high oscillating frequency (36,000 vibrations per hour) dividing up time into tenth-of-a-second segments, and a patented Gravity Control gyroscopic module that neutralises the effects of gravity on the rate of the watch. These horological feats are performed by the manual-winding El Primero Calibre 8804 comprising 308 parts of which 171 are devoted to the gyroscopic module. Framed by a case that is water-resistant to 30 metres, this exceptional display is punctuated by hand-engraved applied hour-markers swept over by gold-plated and faceted hands. Crafted by artisans gifted with remarkable dexterity, each Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to The Rolling Stones is a one-of-a-kind model, to which a rubber-lined brown alligator leather with a rose gold triple folding clasp sets the perfect finishing touch.

Sailing into history books 1.When did you start to think you could be a great Laser sailor? In 2007 at the ISAF Youth world championship where I won the gold medal, made me realise that I can reach the top if I work and train hard. 2. How crucial is physical fitness at the upper levels of Laser racing? High fitness level is a must if you want to be one of the top Laser sailors, but being fit does not guarantee success as sailing is a sport which depends on many different
factors such as strategy, starting, tactics, technique in several conditions, meteorology etc. 3. What’s a typical day of training for you? I start my day by hitting the gym or cycling long distances early in the morning, then sailing, and in the afternoon fitness according to sailing intensity. 4. What differentiates you from your competitors? Important competitions motivate me rather than filling me up with stress.
5. What is your favourite thing to do when you’re not sailing? Spend time with my girlfriend, friends and family. 6. Where do you place sports in their importance in your life? That is, would you say that sports are more important than your family or friends? Sailing is part of my life as is my family and friends. I have been sailing for so many years, I spent a lot of time away from home but my family and friends are
always supportive and they all know how grateful I am and how much I love them. Sailing will come to an end eventually but family and friends will last forever. 7. Where would you like to take your career? More singlehanded classes or more fully crewed sailing? For now, I am focusing on Olympic sailing and obviously preparing for Rio. Once Rio Olympic Games are over, it would be easier to think about the future but I believe I will be participating also for Tokyo Olympics in Laser and I would love to be part of the America’s Cup one day. 8. Sports are full of superstitions, from athletes who perform a specific routine before every game to ones who consider certain items to be lucky or unlucky. Do you have any? I used to consider my cap as my lucky charm. When I lost it and sailed really bad, I almost lost the European medal. After that, I changed my way of thinking because our minds are so powerful... we can choose what is important or not. However, sometimes I like to follow the same routines if a competition starts well.
10. What keeps you motivated? My goals to reach the top and win an Olympic gold medal keep me motivated. The feeling of achieving the ultimate distinction in sports is by far the best emotion a human being can experience and it cannot be compared with anything else. Moments of sadness are much more compared to happy moments in the life of professional athletes, but those joyful moments are so powerful that boost you with motivation all the time. 11. What was the best advice you were ever given? Always enjoy what you are doing and do it for yourself. 12. How do you set your goals? I constantly try to outdo my best achievements. Always aim higher than your comfort zone and only if you push yourself out of this zone you have any chance of being successful. 13. Do you have a saying or motto that you live your life by? Always do it for yourself.

14. Have you ever felt like quitting? If yes, what kept you in it? I have never felt quitting. My goals always help me overcome big obstacles even when I had really hard times with injuries and undesirable results. 15. After you won a medal in London 2012 have you noticed more people sailing in Cyprus? What do you think it needs to be done to bring more people to the sport? Definitely much more people showed interest, and the numbers of participants in sailing have also increased but there is plenty of room for improvement. We need infrastructure to be able to teach all youths how to sail, but this of course requires substantial amount of capital. 16. If you could be an Olympic athlete in any other sport what would have been? I think Tennis is a sport that I really admire as it also depends on numerous factors, just like sailing.

If I were you… Michael Virardi Trainer | Speaker | Author www.michaelvirardi.com In almost every biography you read, whether the subject is a great leader, a successful businessman or even a well-known celebrity, you will invariably come across a reference to the person who inspired, motivated or encouraged the subject of the book to follow the path she eventually took. Everyone who has ever achieved anything can point to someone else who was the catalyst for their future success and I can include myself here. In my case, that ‘someone’ was Dr. Sen Gupta, who has had an immense impact on my professional career. It all started in 1992 when she entered my University lecture room to begin our child psychology course. Dr. Gupta made an instant impression on all the students when she asked us to move all the desks and chairs to one side and to lie face down on the floor. It felt like a scene from a bank robbery! Her ultimate goal was to make me and my fellow students experience the world as children do: by literally looking up at “giant” adults and seeing everything from a child’s point of view – low on the ground and with an acute sense of wonder about everything. What better way to teach child psychology than taking such a first step in empathy. I didn’t realise it at the time but Dr. Gupta’s teaching method turned out to be a crucial aspect of how I would develop many of my own ideas and my particular presentation style. The concept that we should try to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes in order to understand them is not limited to children and child psychology. In essence, Dr. Gupta was teaching us the philosophy of the Golden Rule, which states that we should treat others as we would like others to treat us. By seeing the world from the perspective of our lecture room floor, we, her students, were able to “become” children and thus understand better how we would like to be treated by our adult selves. There was, of course, much more to Dr. Gupta’s teaching style than getting her students to lie on the floor. I have never forgotten the inspiring way in which she put over her messages. I later discovered that, like many successful public speakers, she employed the VHF model, where V stands for visual, H stands for hearing and F stands for feeling. Scientists have determined that 51% of the information we absorb is obtained through visual stimuli and only 7% through hearing (i.e. intonation, etc). Remarkably, most presenters never make much use of the third stimulus, feeling, even though it accounts for 42% of the information we receive and remember. I now use this method myself and, when coaching public speakers, I get my students to write down right all the points they want to raise in their speech, and then find a way of balancing them in the “right” or “left” column, so that they combine them as interesting statistics or stories/quotations that keep the audience captivated. Why does this work? It is because, as scientists have also discovered, we may talk at a speed of 150 words per minute but, as listeners, we can
hear up to 1,000 words per minute. If you are not an interesting and captivating speaker (which means that you don’t know what the left and right sides of the brain do and how to stimulate them), you make it easy for the conference delegates’ or students’ minds to wander. It could be argued that, when giving a lecture or leading a seminar, it is very difficult to use more than visual and hearing stimuli but there are ways of making an audience remember the speaker and especially the speech by ‘igniting’ the feeling part, as I did at a recent seminar that I gave in Jordan. It is important to understand that the right and left sides of our brain deal with different types of information and to ensure that, as public speakers, we provide enough variety in the material we give an audience so that they use the full potential of their minds. So, having balanced my messages with stories and memorable quotations (which are processed by the right side of the brain) and statistics (processed by the left) so as to keep the audience focused, and by using body language (more visual stimulus) and varied intonation (more hearing stimulus), I ended by giving each of the 150 participants a chance to remember me using another sense – in this case, taste, as they enjoyed a delicious Brazilian truffle (see the photo!) Little did I know, on the day that my fellow students and I rather reluctantly lay down on that hard lecture room floor, that I was about to gain a life lesson that proved to be one of the key driving forces behind my subsequent career. Almost 250 years ago, Benjamin Franklin wrote: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.” Thank you Dr. Gupta, wherever you are, for involving me. I will always remember you with endless gratitude and appreciation.

At Imperio, we strive to understand how everything works, what people like and expect from us, and seek first hand experiences. We do everything possible for our clients, and we wanted to show this through our campaign. We check their properties to make sure that they are up to standard before they are delivered to them, and we do this because we feel that the clients are a part of us. And what better way to show this than a photoshoot at the construction site! We arranged for furniture to be moved to

Belvedere Residences, which at the time was under construction. With extreme caution and pristine precision, we had transformed the construction site into a serene living space. Yiannis and Antonis, the two directors at Imperio, and Carla, a guest Labrador Retriever, were photographed at the newly transformed apartment in a series of events.
They started off with their business attire – since they just came home from work – with Carla at their side. Then, they proceeded to a more relaxed setting, where they rested on the sofa whilst reading a newspaper, getting informed about international news, watching videos on a tablet and discussing about their day. Once they unwound and were ready for more action, they enjoyed a drink at home before going out for a dinner or an early night in.
This is because they want to make sure that every apartment is up to the utmost standards before they are delivered to our clients. And since we treat every apartment as if it was our own and we feel that our clients are part of us, we have chosen the slogan “Because you are one of us” to accompany the campaign, as it describes exactly what we do! Tesla Model 3

Fast, spacious, affordable, sustainable and with an endless view of the sky. But there is a catch; you will have to wait!
Tesla will shortly be adding a third model to its current range of two cars but with quite different ambitions compared to the expensive and luxurious Model S and Model X that are already on market.
after CEO Elon Musk revealed the car at a Tesla event in Los Angeles in March 2016.
The Model 3 is being advertised as the “affordable” Tesla and represents the firm’s biggest leap yet. The new vehicle is designed to push the company onto the fringes of the mainstream, mass production car industry. Expectations are high and so is the pre-launch hype train. Almost 400,000 people have showed their interest in owning a Model 3 by putting down a deposit,
Power, charging, and range First of all the car will have a minimum range of 346km on a single charge. That’s smaller than the range you get on versions of the firm’s larger Model S saloon, but much better than some of the cars the Model 3 will compete against like the Nissan Leaf, which currently has a 172km range or the BMW i3 which has 130km range. However,
Tesla is promising a great deal from its latest car and this is what to expect.
37 exclusive 15
it won’t be a surprise if rival manufacturers step up their game in time for the Model 3’s release, releasing updated electric cars with comparable range. Tesla will offer the Model 3 with two different drivetrain options. A rear-wheel-drive version will form the cheapest versions of the car, but a dual-motor all-wheel-drive Model 3 too. The dual motor versions of the Model S claim a better range, so dual motor of Model 3 are expected to advance on that 346km minimum.
Power wise, Tesla claims that the base car will do 0-100 km/h in less than six seconds, and that during a ride in an allwheel-drive variant a 0-100 km/h blast felt over in around four and a half seconds. Battery pack details are set to be revealed closer to launch, or possibly at part two of the car’s reveal, which will take place at a currently unspecified date. Tesla has begun to rapidly expand its “Supercharger” charging station networks in the wake of the Model 3 reveal, with plans
to quadruple the current infrastructure to 15,000 stations within the next two years. Interior and tech Tesla was keen to showcase the car’s exterior design at its first reveal event for the Model 3, and the extremely minimalist, almost bare interior there’s no real dashboard, only a large centrally mounted screen. According to Musk the car’s interior will “feel like a spaceship”. The Model 3 will come with Autopilot as standard. Autopilot will allow Model 3 to

steer within a lane, change lanes with the simple tap of a turn signal, and manage speed by using active, traffic-aware cruise control. Digital control of motors, brakes, and steering helps avoid collisions from the front and sides, and prevents the car from wandering off the road. Autopilot also enables the car to scan for a parking space and parallel park on command.
the company is taking pre-orders for the vehicle at €1,000 per car. There have been strong indications as to what to expect regarding the car’s price. In the US, Tesla will sell the car for a starting price of around $35,000. This would translate to under €30,000 in the EU, but a price closer to €35,000 is more likely. This is, of course, is just the starting price. Many Model 3 buyers are expected to pay much more.
Prices Arguably the most important aspect of the Model 3 is its pricing strategy. Presently,
Release Late 2017 is as specific as Tesla has been so far, so those putting down deposits now will be
waiting over a year to take delivery of their cars. However, many could be left waiting until 2018 and beyond for their Model 3 if the same manufacturing niggles which have beset previous Tesla launches creep into the Model 3 production line. This is one of the biggest questions looming over the company ahead of the car’s official launch and a favourite with sceptics – can Tesla actually deliver its first mass production car on time? Given the large pre-order figures, many will have their fingers crossed.

The Good the Bad & the down right Vulgar Salone del Mobile 2016 new-money which unfortunately tend to favour obese and loud design. Then we have the known Fashion Brands. The colour of money that is being spend on furnishings has moved them to discover a flair in furniture making. Their proposals vary from the safe and pleasing to the nouveau riche. Another trend which is seeping in and has been making inroads for some time now in Art and Architecture is the concept of the ‘shock of the new’, design driven by surprise rather than rational... Not a good idea. Fortunately there are still some inspiring examples leading a new design take on interiors and furniture, some inspired by a retrospective approach on much loved furniture of the sixties and seventies, other from images and materials from around the world or new techniques and new materials. Notable are makers which are introducing new materials, exquisite marbles and wood, fine detailing, interesting and unique finishes with grain woods, brass, copper, raw metal and raw fibreglass. This makes them unique in their approach, edgy, and very difficult to copy and reproduce.
Hundred of thousands of visitors mostly Designers, Manufacturers, Architects, Interior Designers and buyers flogged again as every April for their yearly pilgrimage to Milan for the Solone del Mobile 2016. The mother of all exhibitions on furniture and design is widely regarded as the place to see where the industry is heading and where new trends, innovation and ideas are born. This at least is what our Italian friends would like us to think. Scratch under the shiny veneer and few fine vine glasses later, they will confidentially whisper that some things do not feel right and it’s certainly not the Prosecco.
Below are some of our personal favourites, at least the ones we had time to see on a very busy week. Some are established brands other are new and experimental, all making their mark and doing their part to influence the Design world.

The customary after the exhibition get-together where celebrated Designers, Manufacturers, Architects and Buyers, mingle and review, gossip exchange ideas and loosen up after a long exhausting week have been turned in to publicity, promotion events were the champagne flows in abundance, party girls get priority over innovators and designers and new money show off their new trophy girlfriends. We enjoy party girls and new money as the next person but for the first time after decades, designers and innovators are for the last two years being dancing to their tune and design is in danger to loosing its edge. The results of this can be clearly seen in the Halls of Salone del Mobile and this year was certainly not a vintage year for design. Par a few exceptions for which we highlight below a lot of manufacturers are taking design back to the dark ages promoting Vulgar designs, dressed up in glitter and priced accordingly to attract the HENGE Sofa

The Bespoke Porcelain Company Tableware at the pinnacle of personalisation
“People aren’t entertaining in the same way they used to, but that means it’s more important that when you do it, you do it right,” says Jill Fenichell, founder and head designer of The Bespoke Porcelain Company. For years, Brooklyn-based Fenichell was an antiques dealer specialising in European ceramics, and when she couldn’t find the pieces to match a client’s stylistic request, she would have them made. This happened often enough that, 20 years ago, she started a business focusing exclusively on custom porcelain designs. Homes painted onto plates with a border colour that matches crockery made by Royal Crown Derby in the 19th century? No problem. A pattern that resembles your favourite necklace? Doable. Just about anything a client wants – whether the for their home, yacht or private jet – Fenichell can create it. Except a monogram. It’s not
that she can’t do it – she’s just not a fan of the look, unless it incorporates other decorative elements. “The monogram might have been an old-world way of personalising homewares, but I think if you really want to distinguish yourself from other people today, the whole composition has to reflect something personal to you,” she suggests, politely. The process takes anywhere from a few months to an entire year, depending on the complexity of the design and how many pieces are required (she’s done single items, like a mug or punch bowl, but also complete services). It begins with a “discovery phase”, where clients are asked questions that range from the practical (“How and where will you use these pieces?”) to the personal (“What kind of memories do you want the porcelain to evoke when you use it?”). Once the design is approved, a trial copy is made before Fenichell decides which of her affiliated workshops will produce the final
designs – based on the materials required whether gilt work (the use of 24ct gold is not uncommon) or handpainting is involved. She then oversees every single step of the process to ensure a happy ending – be it a yellow tea set depicting birds found on Florida’s Key West, with 23ct gold gilding; an interpretation of an 18th-century Royal Worcester pattern on dessert plates; cups and saucers for an opera fan, for whom the swagged scarlet reminded him of the curtain at La Scala; or a Georgian-style dinner service with a border design based on an 1830s Wedgwood creamware soup tureen, but made bolder and bigger.

CONSTANTINOS YIANNIKOURIS: Butterflies have been freed
Constantinos Yiannikouris is one of the most acclaimed Cypriot artists who lives and works in France. He studied at the School of Fine Arts (Ecole des Beux–Arts) in Paris. Besides painting, Yiannikouris also deals with tapisserie, mosaic and fresco. His works can be found in various public and private collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, at the Fonds Regional D’Art Contemporain as well as in collections in England, America, Australia, Greece, The Netherlands, Germany and Cyprus. The paintings of Yiannikouris are buoyant and lyrical. Colours are fresh and limpid and even a brush mark can denote form, an edge to a form, a suggestion of many things. The flecks of paint and mottled surfaces are floating over the canvas as if surrounding the images in their own mystery, where a fine, sensitive, nervous line
holds a face in antiquity. A band of blue gives a pictorial weight and also is the evening sky. His huge canvas bounces with glory and he succeeds in using so many pigments and textures without losing any tension at all. And yet the tension is deliciously counterbalanced by a relaxed, floating feeling as if you are caught amongst the sun’s rays in a beautiful garden where the windows of a greenhouse add diamonds to the foliage. He uses the light seen through shutters to travel in unison across his canvas. Figurative shapes do appear now and again, but they are not essential. Perhaps they are there to urge us to join the halcyon splendour. But it is the magic of chance and the physical impression which gives these works their sensual beauty. When the colour is forced into a small space, the effect is dazzling and when spread over the largest canvases it is as if butterflies have been freed.
Works of Yiannikouris are currently being exhibited at Gallery Morfi in Limassol | www.morfi.org

plexiglas made in Greece
Urania Gazelli, as you will see her being mentioned by famous fashionistas and magazines around the world, designs clutch bags that one of a kind. After all, this is what made her beautiful designs so successful. With studies in industrial design and a bachelor from Middlesex University of London, she has deep understanding of precise, high quality workmanship and aesthetics which is evident in each bag. It all started in 2011, when Gazelli, hearkened to one of the most subversive trends of last season, the plexiglass bags, took the trend into another level by creating unique patterns, shapes and colours. Bluesmart Black Edition Bluesmart raised more than €1.77m on Indiegogo in 2014 for its connected carry-on bag. Now, two years later, the company’s improving upon that luggage with the release of its Bluesmart Black Edition. Bluesmart is a competent multitasker, incorporating nifty functions such as a built-in scale and a charging port for gadgets. Bluesmart Black Edition comes with significant OS updates that improve GPS precision, battery performance, light behaviours, and overall performance. Design was the real focus of the bag’s release. The Black Edition’s exterior combines nylon and polyester with a double layer of PU coating, which makes the suitcase water- and scratch-resistant, Bluesmart says. It also comes with a removable mesh liner, and the company claims the Black Edition’s high-density microfiber protects electronics from scratches, dust, and dirt.
Plenty of companies recognise this niche market. Samsung and Samsonite are reportedly working together to manufacture bags that are tracked through satellites, and Raden unveiled its connected luggage earlier this year. Unlike Raden, which relies on a mesh network to hunt down lost bags, Bluesmart relies on 3G and GPS radios to track luggage.

Noke A Utah company called Fūz Designs (as in, “fuse”) has taken on the challenge of making a smart padlock that unlocks via an app on any iPhone, Android phone, or Windows phone with Bluetooth 4.0. While seemingly simple, it’s a daunting ask for one big reason: Unlike your Bluetooth headset or your Jambox, which can exhibit a few pairing or signal hiccups with no great consequences, a lock has to work all the time, every time, without fail. Lock up your bike with a keyless Bluetooth lock and suddenly it refuses to operate properly? You’re stranded—or worse, bikeless.
The device appeals to anyone seeking a keyless lifestyle - either by proactive choice, or simply because they’re the type of person who’s always losing their keys anyway. Fūz Designs calls its padlock the Noke (as in, “no key”). The design is simple, which is important. As a backup, in case your phone dies, you’re asked to program a combination when you first set up the lock. The combination consists of a sequence of short and long presses on the shackle. The Noke itself is powered a standard watch battery that lasts about a year.

Doing business in cyprus
Cyprus is one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea having a very advantageous geographical location since it is in the middle of three continents Europe, Asia and Africa. A sovereign European country, with a rich cultural heritage over the last centuries, being an international financial centre, having a very well-developed infrastructure and a highly educated workforce. The country has a presidential system, with the President being elected every five years, and a written constitution which safeguards the political stability, the human rights, including the right of ownership of private property, and the independence of the courts and the parliament. Cyprus has a strong legal framework which is based on UK law since the island had been a British colony until 1960, fully harmonised with the European Union Directives. The country joined the European Union in 2004 while in 2008 it joined the Economic Monetary Union (Eurozone). Additionally, Cyprus is a member of the WTO, the World Bank, the Commonwealth, the Council of Europe, the UN, the IMF, the EBRD (the organisation maintains offices in Cyprus and has already invested in the country’s financial sector) and a founding member of OSCE. There is a competitive modern and transparent legal, financial and regulatory framework, highly skilled, educated and multilingual workforce and excellent telecommunications systems. The country has two modern, fully operational and busy (especially during summer) airports in Larnaca and Paphos while the main port is located in Limassol.
Cyprus has a very competitive tax system and one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe, 12.5%. All business expenses are allowed for tax purposes, while special tax exemptions e.g. for dividend income and profit on sales of shares, make it very attractive. The advance ruling practice and the extended treaty network makes Cyprus a targeted destination for holding, financing, trading and intellectual property companies. Professional services, tourism and shipping industries have shown resilience in the financial crisis while the construction and real estate industries are showing strong signals of rebounding. The fiscal indicators are improving, well above the targets set by the institutional creditors of Cyprus (IMF, European Commission and European Central Bank) and
the economy is entering a path of recovery. The Economic Adjustment Program was successfully completed early this year and the economy grew on an average growth of 1.6% overall in 2015 after a period of more than three years of negative growth rates. According to the European Commission report, Growth is expected to be stronger in 2016 and 2017, driven by both domestic and external sources. It is forecasted to gain momentum gradually and reach 2.0% in 2017. Additionally, as per the Land Registry data the property sale contracts recorded an increase of 19% in 2015 while the first quarter of 2016 recorded an increase of 24%. Significant growth was also recorded in sales to foreign buyers with an almost four-fold increase.

favourable investment conditions and providing very attractive incentives. There are no capital controls for the banking system and the funds can freely move in and out of Cyprus. The country as a member of the European Union applies all the directives for the free transfer of goods and funds within the Union. Additionally, the Central Bank of Cyprus is a member of the European Central Bank and applies all relevant rules and regulations in relation to anti money laundering measures. It shall be emphasised that all systemic financial institutions in Cyprus are directly monitored by the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM).
A significant increase in the number of applications for new companies was also recorded in March. According to data by the Department of the Registrar of Companies and Official Receiver of the Republic of Cyprus, the number of applications for registration of a new company increased in March 2016 by 23% compared to March 2015. Data shows that this was an increase for the seventh consecutive month. Several structural reforms are undergoing in Cyprus since 2012, including a privatization plan for telecommunications, the ports and the electricity market, an enhancement of Budgetary Framework, to safeguard fiscal discipline, a labor market reform, to contain wage costs, pension reforms to ensure long-term sustainability, a health care sector reform and a reform
of the public sector, to improve service delivery to businesses and citizens. Public sector reform is undertaken to uplift any bureaucratic obstacles and enhance the efficiency of the processes. The review is undertaken by the World Bank and UK Government officials and the proposals are implemented by the Government. Actually, the reforms at the Companies Registrar are nearly finished and the registration of companies can be performed within 48 hours, electronically. Foreign direct investment in the last decade has been increasing, since it is encouraged by the Governmental authorities and liberalised for some time. The governments in Cyprus are always aiming in generating a business friendly environment, supporting private initiatives through maintaining
Cyprus has very well established procedures for providing work permits while specific programs have been developed for granting naturalization by investment and permanent residency through a fast-track process. Foreign investors can use the common forms of business vehicles to conduct business in Cyprus such as partnership, sole proprietorship, Limited Liability Company and a permanent establishment. Additionally there is an increasing number of investment firms that are licensed by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission. A new legislation governing the Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) was enacted which replaces in its entirety the existing International Collective Investment Schemes Law of 1999. The legislation modernises the regulatory aspects of AIFs in Cyprus while also expanding the options available for fund promoters. It brings Cyprus up to par with other competitive EU investment funds jurisdictions.

once a crossfitter always a crossfitter
CrossFit is a training program that builds strength and conditioning through extremely varied and challenging workouts. Each day the workout will test a different part of your functional strength or conditioning, not specialising in one particular thing, but rather with the goal of building a body that’s capable of practically anything and everything. This is when we call prepare for the unknown. Fitness is about performing well at any and every task imaginable. Many people are fit in a single pathway. CrossFitters seek to be fit in all of them. We have used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and former cage fighters. We scale load and intensity, we don’t change programs. Rather than having one
workout for older women and another for hardcore athletes, there’s ONE workout each day that is completely scalable based on your skill. For example, if the workout calls for squats with 60kg but you can only do squats with the bar (20kg), then that’s where you will start. If you are injured and can’t do squats at all, a similar movement will be substituted, and if the number of reps is too many for your current ability, that will be reduced. As you get stronger and more experienced you will work your way towards eventually doing the workouts as prescribed. It gets you to do things you wouldn’t do on your own. You might never go running or rowing on your own – but if it’s in the
WOD (Workout Of the Day), you will. Also, you will get to do things that you would never do before (such as yoga classes, or spending a Saturday afternoon doing swimming sprints at the sea) because it will help you get a better time on a WOD later on. CrossFit Limassol is the first CrossFit affiliate gym in Cyprus and organises local and international competitions (FitXlevel 2012, CrossFit Limassol Guaba Beach Bar 2013, Aphrodite Games 2014, Cyprus Throwdown 2014, WodWars Europe 2015 & 2016) in Cyprus. Dyson is giving the humble hairdryer a makeover
The Dyson specialist research centre used:
1610 km of real human hair used in tesing Renowned for its bagless vacuum cleaners, U.K based Dyson is using its technical expertise to entice a whole new market: hair and personal care. The Supersonic looks strikingly different from any other hairdryer on the market. It looks stylish and elegant with a surprisingly small nozzle to dry the hair. That’s down to some of that superior technology, including the motor which is tiny enough to fit into the base of the hairdryer’s handle. The Supersonic uses Air Multiplier technology – like the Dyson hand dryers, for ex-
ample. This means it amplifies the volume of air three times as it passes through the dryer, so the hair are dried in shorter time. According to Dyson the hairdryer uses intelligent heat control. The temperature of the air being powered into the hair is checked 20 times a second to ensure it never gets so hot that it can damage hair follicles. The downside is that this innovative hairdryer is quite expensive. Besides, Dyson products are never budget options, though they arguably offer strong value thanks to the superior technology inside, and this is no exception – it costs €399.

Photographer Omar Robles has over 135,000 followers on Instagram, and we’re not surprised, because his latest series of photographs documenting ballet dancers on the streets of Cuba is nothing short of majestic.
Javier Rojas
“Their dancers are just some of the best dancers in the world,” writes Robles on his Blog. “Perhaps it is because movement and rhythm runs in their afro-caribbean blood, but most likely it is due to the Russian school of training which is part of their heritage.”
Robles had dreamt of visiting the country for a long time, and thanks to a grant from the Bessie Foundation he was recently able to fulfil this dream. “Cubans struggle incessantly to stay afloat. Yet much like the ballet dancers, they strive with a resilience and elegance that I’ve never seen before. This is exactly why Cuban ballet dancers have always been so great and through so many generations. Endurance simply resides in their blood.” http://omarzroblesblog.wordpress.com

The world’s most expensive house 3 Helipads Air Traffic Control

India’s richest man, and Forbes’s fourth richest man, Mukesh Ambani, has built the world’s most expensive house in Mumbai. It is estimated to be worth €884m. The 27-story Mumbai pad consists of three helipads, a health club, dance studio, 50seat movie theater and underground parking lot with enough room for 160 cars. An American firm oversaw the interior design.
The house didn’t cost €884m to build, of course, but construction did cost millions of dollars. Given Mumbai’s astronomical property prices, the finished product is worth many times the construction tab. That’s where the billion-dollar figure comes in. The home is rumoured to have a wait staff of 600, bigger than the staff of many small companies.
77 exclusive 15
The house might be oversized, but it isn’t sprawling: It soars more than 168 metres, more resembling a condo tower than a luxurious mansion. Children might say it looks like Lego building blocks, the Daily News points out. Mr. Ambani could have afforded to go even bigger. According to Forbes magazine, Mr. Ambani’s €25.6 billion fortune makes him the fourth-richest man in the world. He runs Reliance Industries, a textile company that grew into what it says is “India’s largest private sector enterprise.” Not surprisingly, not everyone is a fan of the construction, which seems out of place in a country known for its poverty and slums. One local newspaper columnist labeled the building an “edifice to his ego,” while an editor of an Indian design magazine called it “obscenely lavish.” Ouch! But some stick up for the billionaire. “He can’t just walk into a cinema and watch a film like you or me,” the Guardian quotes an associate as saying. “So he has built a house to his requirements like anyone else would. It’s a question of convenience and requirements. It’s only a family home, just a big one. It’s just another home that someone is living in. It’s no big event.”

Scheduled to open in May 2016, the €269.5 million expansion will triple the museum’s gallery space and include the new Pritzker Centre for Photography, as well as showcase some 600 artworks promised to the museum, among hundreds of other works already in the museum collection.

Via 57West, New York Occupying a full city block at the western terminus of Manhattan’s 57th Street is the newest residential project designed by the Danish Architecture firm BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group. Rising asymmetrically from its north-eastern corner, the 32-story building evokes a pyramid shape and contains a lush central courtyard accessed via the third floor. The 93 square metre building, which directly overlooks the Hudson River, contains 709 residences.
5. Faena Forum, Miami Beach One of the most high-profile projects rising in South Florida is the Faena District, a massive full-service enclave developed by Argentine entrepreneur Alan Faena. Due for completion in April 2016, the building will feature two connected volumes (a cube and a cylinder) wrapped in a structural façade of crisscrossing arches and catenary curves. THE CYPRUS PERMANENT RESIDENCE PERMIT BY INVESTMENT By Petros Rialas
Obtaining the Cyprus Permanent Residence Permit (‘PRP’) Cyprus is conveniently located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. The Cyprus PRP is mainly aimed towards non-Europeans and is one of the most popular programs of its kind offered by any EU member state. In fact, since 2013 more than 2,000 applications have been approved under the fast track procedure.
once every two years, unlike other European countries that insist on residency for at least 3 months per year • Tax residency based solely on number of days one stays in Cyprus each year (183 days). Foreigners who decide to also become Cyprus tax residents enjoy significant tax benefits and exemptions through their non-domicile status
The natural beauty of the island, its climate and local hospitality fused with a very attractive business and tax regime, constitute Cyprus as one of the most advantageous and sought after jurisdictions for business people requiring efficient access to Europe, nationals of troubled areas seeking security and a plan ‘B’, others for holiday or retirement purposes or even to permanently relocate on the island along with their families.
Why Cyprus for residency? • Low crime rate • Excellent Mediterranean weather and beautiful Blue Flag beaches • High standard private international schools and universities • Modern infrastructure with state of the art marinas and golf resorts • High-end beachfront, city, village or mountain properties • English widely spoken
There is no pre-requisite for someone to have lived on the island prior to the application of the Cyprus PRP. Furthermore, once the PRP is acquired, one has the option not to permanently reside in Cyprus, thus not becoming a tax resident. Moreover, at a later stage, the PRP holder has the opportunity to apply for the Cyprus passport based on the years of stay and not via the investment plan. Advantages of the PRP program • Fast track process with PRP issuance within 2-3 months • Life-long validity without the need for renewal • Issued to spouse, dependent children and spouse parents • No requirement to reside in Cyprus either before, during or after the application. The only requirement is for the applicant to visit Cyprus
Why Cyprus for business? • EU member state • Established International Business Centre with high level of professional services • Primary hub to base operations for business in or through Cyprus • Competitive costs for setting up and maintaining business substance • Attractive and tested tax and legal systems for individuals and corporations • Modern banking system The below information is intended to provide a brief guide only. Our specialists will be glad to assist you with their professional advice.

No, unless they spend 183 days in Cyprus in a year. There are significant tax advantages for foreigners who become Cyprus tax residents. What is the procedure for a PRP holder to apply for Citizenship based on the years of stay? The investor must have completed 7 years of legal residence in Cyprus prior to the date of
application and to have resided legally and continuously in Cyprus during the 12 months preceding the date of the application. Who are considered to be financially dependent adult children? Unmarried children aged between 18 and 25, who may prove that they are university students for at least 6 months after the application date. What is the ‘for so long’ PRP for dependents? Children who are financially dependent, may submit a separate application to obtain the ‘for so long’ PRP without the need to invest in additional real estate. In this case, the parents will need to prove additional income of at least €5,000 for each dependent child. The ‘for so long’ PRP will still remain valid even after the child turns 25 years old and even if he/she is no longer single and/or a student and/or financially dependent. Kartell reveals plastic furniture designed for children
Design for children seems to be one of the key trends at this year’s Milan Design Week for the Italian design brand Kartell. The Kartell collection includes a rocking horse designed by Japanese design studio Nendo, which is based on I-beams used in building construction. It is composed of two curved surfaces – one forming the head and seat; the other providing the rocker – and a flat vertical section that joins the two.
A toy tractor called Testa Calda and a race car named Disco volante are made from sheets of tinted plastic, which are shaped into seats and chassis. Designed by Lissoni, the small four-wheeled rideable vehicles come in a range of colour combinations. French designer Starck’s iconic Louis Ghost chair for the brand is reinterpreted in miniature, and can be customised with

graphics like drawings and photos laid onto the round seat back. Similar patterns can be applied to the tops of mini versions of Kartell’s range of tables, as well as the surfaces of fishbowl-shaped FL/Y lamp shades by Laviani. The collection also includes the simple plastic Airway swing, also by Starck, which appears to be moulded around the four colourful ropes it hangs from.

Kay Bells lets you take a little bit of magic with you wherever you go. The Cork, an Ireland based maker, handcrafts tiny terrariums “using a range of strange and beautiful curiosities, found in the woods and on the mountain sides, combed from the windswept beaches and picked in the wild meadows”. Bells also does custom pieces, if you’re willing to send her your precious memories. She started experimenting with jewellery, working from her tiny spare room and setting up a stall at a local craft market every Saturday. She also started setting up the Etsy shop around this time and her jewellery was such an instant hit that three months later she was handing in her notice at work and taking the plunge into full time self-employment! “I’ve made custom jewellery with everything from ashes, to locks of hair and bridal flowers”, she stated.
