One of the best ways to combine the joys of running model trains and collecting them is with trains O scale. These little machines are built on a very tiny scale, and though they are designed to look realistic and detailed, the main point of them is to be able to run them. Collecting them is a good choice of a hobby because they are not fragile artifacts that can break with the slightest touch. This is because they were built to be strong, affordable, and durable due to the fact that children loved to play with them. This attention to functionality over tiny details is very apparent in the track as well. Those that designed these miniature trains were much more concerned with having them be easily operated rather than compromising it for the sake of being accurate. This is apparent because many modelers in the past built their own track, whether it was wide gauge or narrow gauge. There are regional differences as well, as UK O scale running stock is 1:43.5, while the US uses 1:48 scale. As for the power, the trains can move on a more accurate looking two rail track with direct current voltage, or they instead use a third rail, which isn't realistic but allows for movement. For those that are interested in seriously pursuing o scale models as a hobby, the gauge that the US uses is a good choice due to the fact that it's the same one that most dollhouses use. In other words, if you have any desire of really expanding on the look and feel of the town that the train moves through, you will have plenty of options at the 1:48 scale, such as buildings, accessories, and even people. So for those that are looking for an interesting, hands on hobby with a lot of different areas to explore, you should consider collecting and model trains O scale. You'll appreciate the thrill of tracking down different models, and if you enjoy building then you'll have no problem designing your own tracks. Of course, if you have any children that might want to play with your creation, that won't be the worst thing considering how sturdily these units are designed.
