Model railroading as a hobby is second to none. It gives you and your family hours of fun and enjoyment. Crafting together a layout complete with trains, tracks, stations, lighting and sound tests not only your design skills but you learn a lot of engineering too. The feeling of joy when you have finally put together a model railroad is simply exhilarating. Not surprisingly, this hobby delights all age groups. There are models available for the very young to the serious sophisticated model railroader. Model railroading is a serious hobby to many and you will find clubs where the members have constructed extensive and sophisticated models. Where else can you build a near replica of the beautiful old prewar railroads which operated in the West? Yes- you learn a bit of history too in the process. There are many different sizes of model trains you could buy depending on the space you have and your budget. In model railroading parlance it is referred to as scale. The scale is the ratio of the size of the model to the original train (known as prototype). Scales are normally referred by alphabets. Scale could vary from the tiny Z scale to the large G scale. Among the large models the O model is very popular. The scale O means that it has a ratio of 1:48. That means the size of the model train is 1/48th of an original prototype. In North America and continental Europe one of the more popular scales is HO. HO stands for "Half of O". What it means is that an HO scale model train is half the size of an O scale. Why HO scale model trains are popular is that they are not too large nor are they too small. They are safe to be handled by children as they don't contain tiny parts which could be accidentally swallowed. The size of HO scale model trains also allow the model railroader to easily put in a lot of detail in the layout. HO scale model trains are preferred by a large majority of hobbyists. As a result many companies sell an extensive range of locomotives, accessories, rolling stock etc for this
