THE LARGER qUANTITY OF AREA IS FROM ITS PRODUCTION AS THAT’S THE COMPANY OUTPUT PROjECTION, THE YELLOW HIGHLIGHTED AREA IS THE BMW CENTRAL BUILDING WHICH FURTHER ANALYSIS WILL BE CARRIED OUT ALONG THIS SHEET, THIS BUILDING ACTS AS A NODE FOR CONNECTION AS IT CONNECTS ALL WORkSHOPS AND PRODUCTION PLANTS TOGETHER WHICH IS THROUGH ITS THREE MAIN ACCESS POINTS RADIATED FROM NORTH, SOUTH-EAST AND SOUTH-WEST.

SECTION 1-1

SECTION 1-1 IS TAkING THROUGH SOUTH-EAST OF THE BUILDING AND CUTS ONTO ITS LANDSCAPING, THIS ILLUSTRATION LOOkS INTO ONE OF THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF HAvING A BLUR OF SOCIAL AND WORk CLASSES WITH NO BARRIERS AND BOUNDARIES OF WORk FORCE WERE BOTH INSPIRE AND SHARE THOUGHTS. HOWEvER FROM THIS SECTION YOU CAN SEE THAT THIS HAS BEEN EMPHASISED AS YOU GET A SILENT STEADY FLOW OF THE PRODUCTION LINE RUNNING STRAIGHT THROUGH THE OFFICE AREA vIA ITS STEEL AND GLASS LED TUBES WHICH ILLUMINATE IN LOW LIGHT LEvELS. IN PERSPECTIvE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE FIRST FLOOR THE CEILING IS ExPOSED TO SUCH FLOW HOWEvER FROM GROUND FLOOR IT HAS BEEN ACHIEvED BY HAvING DOUBLED CEILING HEIGHT FROM PARTS OF THE OFFICE SO YOU STILL GET GLIMPSES OF THE PRODUCTION LINE.

THE ANALYSIS TAkEN ON THE GROUND FLOOR PLAN HIGHLIGHTS THE WORkING OFFICE ROOMS AND ALSO THE CIRCULATION THROUGH THE BUILDING. AS YOU CAN SEE THAT THE PRODUCTION TUBE PLAYS A vITAL ROLE IN THE SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE PLAN AS IT ACTS AS THE ANCHOR AND THE SPINE OF THE BUILDING AS THE SPACE IS FORMED AROUND THE TUBE SYSTEM. THE PLAN IS A DEEP PLAN HOWEvER SUFFICIENT LIGHT IS APPARENT DUE TO THE SLOTTED WINDOWS ON ITS FACADE FACING SOUTH-EAST TO MAkE THE MOST OF NATURAL SUNLIGHT, THE OFFICE SPACE IS ARRANGED ALONG THE EDGE OF TUBING SYSTEM WHICH FOLLOWS AN ORDER OF FUNCTION AS YOU GET THE RESEARCH AREAS ADjACENT TO THE INNOvATION LABS SO INTERNAL CIRCULATION WORkS FLUIDLY THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. FROM THE FIRST FLOOR PLAN YOU CAN SEE THE HIGHLIGHTED ROUTE OF THE TUBING SYSTEM AS THE FOUR LANES FOLLOW A ONE-WAY SYSTEM WHICH START AT FROM ONE OF THE PLANT AND FLOWS THROUGH THE OFFICES THEN PROCEEDS TOWARDS ITS DESTINATION AND THE NExT STEP OF THE PROCESS SUCH AS PAINTING, STAMPING, WELDING AND ELECTRICAL WIRING, EACH PROCESS TAkES A SEPARATE LANE. HOWEvER THERE ARE BASES ALONG EACH LANE WHICH IS THE POINT WHERE IT CHANGES DIRECTION IT ALSO ACTS AS vISTAS FOR THE WORkERS, FOR NAvIGATION THERE REFER TO AS NODES.

SECTION 6-6 IS TAkING FROM SOUTH-WEST OF THE BUILDING AND SHOWS THE SAME ASPECT OF DESIGN FROM SECTION 5-5 BUT SHOWS THAT ALTHOUGH THE ORIENTATION OF POSITION WITHIN THE BUILDING CHANGES YOU WOULD STILL BE BELOW THE PRODUCTION TUBES. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THIS SECTION IT RUNS OvER ELEvATORS AND THEN WORkERS FROM ALL THREE LEvELS ARE IN SIGHT OF THE PROCESS.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER AGP ARGE GESAMTPLANUNG, IFB STUTTGARD MAIN CONTRACTORS ARGE ROHBAU, OBAG THE BMW FACTORY PRIOR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CENTRAL BUILDING ExISTED AS THREE DISCONNECTED BUILDINGS, EACH PLAYING AN INTEGRAL PART IN THE PRODUCTION OF BMW 3 SERIES vEHICLES. THESE THREE PRODUCTION BUILDINGS WERE DESIGNED IN-HOUSE BY BMW’S REAL MANAGEMENT GROUP, HOUSING SEPARATELY THE FABRICATION OF RAW AUTO BODIES (645,000 SqUARE FEET (59,900 M2)), THE PAINT SHOP (270,000 SqUARE FEET (25,000 M2)), AND THE FINAL ASSEMBLY HALL (1,075,000 SqUARE FEET (99,900 M2)). A COMPETITION WAS HELD FOR THE DESIGN OF A CENTRAL BUILDING TO FUNCTION AS THE PHYSICAL CONNECTION OF THE THREE UNITS. IT ALSO NEEDED TO HOUSE THE ADMINISTRATIvE AND EMPLOYEE NEEDS SPACES. THE DESIGN TOOk THIS IDEA OF CONNECTIvITY AND USED IT TO INFORM EvERY ASPECT OF THE NEW BUILDING. IT SERvES AS A CONNECTION FOR THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS STEPS AND THE EMPLOYEES. DESIGNED AS A SERIES OF OvERLAPPING AND INTERCONNECTING LEvELS AND SPACES, IT BLURS THE SEPARATION BETWEEN PARTS OF THE COMPLEx AND CREATES A LEvEL GROUND FOR BOTH BLUE AND WHITE COLLAR EMPLOYEES, vISITORS, AND THE CARS. THE BUILDING FUNCTIONS AS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE FACTORY, CONNECTING THE THREE PRODUCTION SHEDS. EACH DAY, 650 BMW 3 SERIES SEDANS PASS THROUGH THE CENTRAL BUILDING ON AN ELEvATED CONvEYOR AS THEY MOvE FROM ONE OF THE THREE PRODUCTION SHEDS TO THE NExT. DIM BLUE LED LIGHTS HIGHLIGHT THE vEHICLES AFTER EACH STAGE, AS THEY ExIT ONE OF THE SHEDS. THESE CONvEYORS NOT ONLY TAkE THE vEHICLES FROM ONE PRODUCTION SHED TO ANOTHER, BUT DO SO DIRECTLY THROUGH ALL OF THE FUNCTIONAL SPACES OF THE CENTRAL BUILDING. THE OFFICES, MEETING ROOMS, AND PUBLIC RELATIONS FACILITIES ARE ALL BUILT AROUND THESE ELEvATED CONvEYORS, CREATING AN INTERESTING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE EMPLOYEES, THE CARS, AND THE PUBLIC. NOT ONLY IS THE CENTRAL BUILDING AN OFFICE BUILDING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS CENTRE FOR THE FACTORY, IT IS ALSO A vERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE PRODUCTION PROCESS AT THE FACTORY. ALL OF THE LOAD-BEARING WALLS, FLOORS, AND OFFICE LEvELS ARE MADE OF CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE, WHILE THE ROOF STRUCTURE IS COMPOSED OF STRUCTURAL STEEL BEAMS AND SPACE FRAME CONSTRUCTION. THE FACADE IS CLAD IN SIMPLE MATERIALS OF LIkE CORRUGATED METAL, CHANNEL GLASS, AND GLASS CURTAIN WALLS. THE SELECTION FOR SUCH BUILDING IS DUE TO ITS FOCUS ON CONNECTIvITY AND UNDERSTANDING OF SPACE FOR THE CONSUMER RATHER THAN SPACE SOLELY FOR FUNCTION, WITHIN THE BMW CENTRAL IT’S ABOUT FUNCTION BUT THE DESIGN ALSO EMPHASISE ON THE ExPERIENCE OF BEING IN SUCH SPACE AND TO PREvENT HIERARCHICAL ORDER WERE ITS BASED ON STRATEGIC MEASURES AND WORkFORCE STATUS. THE BLUR OF SPACES BETWEEN THE BLUE AND WHITE COLLAR WORkERS IS ACHIEvED THROUGH THE SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT OF ALLOWING BOTH TO MERGE TOGETHER THEN TO DIvERT.

ALGAE PRODUCTION CORE thE first procEss is thE cEntral corE bEing placEd as its thE main function wErE EvErything within thE building will bE basEd around its function. thrEE floors will bE radiatEd around this corE which will havE dEdicatEd thEmEs running across thE floors such as “protEct thE futurE” which is thE sciEntist & rEsEarch arEa.

WRAPPED SERVICES sErvicEs and floor spacE is dEsignEd around thE corE allowing for unlimitEd viEws of thE wholE algaE procEss within thE building similar to thE bmw cEntral building whErE it crEatEs a bluE of workforcE bEtwEEn thE bluE and whitE collar workErs. undErground Expo arEa is placEd bEnEath thE building so it sprEads ovEr thE sitE towards thE viaduct.

dEsigning a building form insidE out allows for a functional building that is tailorEd to its functions, which is why having two algaE corEs allows for bEttEr movEmEnt around thE building as it will rEducE intEnsE footfall around onE and sprEad out onto two and across thE building. also thE building is anglEd away from south on thE strEEt sitE whErE it allows for thE building to bE sEEn from around thE strEEt cornEr and also whEn EntEring from thE train, ExtErnal public arEas would wrap around thE building including having a pond for EnvironmEntal purposEs.

CLADDING SYSTEM this itEration ExplorEs on thE idEa of naturE, using fibonacci naturE sEquEncE as a constant ratio of 2 dEgrEEs rotation on Each floor platE allows for thE building to facE towards thE south facing wErE algaE tubEs will bE placEd allowing for growth. also thE cladding systEm towards north of thE building would bE in prE-cast concrEtE for thErmal mass and also fit into its contExt.
