March 15th, 2018 To, The Concern Person I am architect Imrul Kayes, completed my undergraduate thesis on Urban informal sector in 2007 from BRAC University, Bangladesh including professional internship from Bashirul Haq & Associates Ltd. During my student years, I was exposed the concept and need of humanitarian development, which encouraged me to complete related theoretical courses such as rural architecture, rural housing, disaster management, construction management and research & practice etc. Overtime, I grew to be a strong believer of humanitarian practice to assist the communities in needs and use design as a tool for problem solving to synthesize humanities needs & desire into accessible, affordable and viable solution for building better future. As an architect by profession, I was been involved, project based with various initiatives lead by BRAC such as housing reconstruction in SIDR-affected areas; Improved design and construction of rural housing in Costal area; Extension of an Aga Khan Award winning handmade Mud school etc. including various research like livelihood of Urban grey space, Appropriate construction module for migrant communities; Toward a Multi-Sector Initiative in the Urban Slums around Bangladesh; Housing of the Ultra Poor: a dynamic vernacular; etc. and later in 2009, I enthusiastically took the opportunity to work as the local chapter leader & project architect for Architecture for Humanity a US based non-profit provided design & built service on the field of built environment to the communities in need until march 2015. During this period, I was involved with different design and Building prototype & pilot projects into several development initiative such as Community centre & orphanage with school facilities for rural community; prefabricated, retractable modular classroom for slum education facilities; Improved single family residence for low income communities; water treatment plant with production module for river side & coastal communities; low-cost, energy-efficient mobile tea stall for micro-entrepreneur of urban informal sector; Revitalization of urban grey space for migrant communities; etc. During my 8 years professional period, my experience of leading a multi-functional team to managed multiple simultaneous projects from the conceptual design stage through final construction to post evaluation help me develop a depth knowledge on project planning, designing, scheduling, implementation, recruiting, monitoring, periodic reporting & documenting, while ensuring various complies & policies of overseas headquarter, donor agencies and local requirement. My experience also helps me develop and ensure a good communication skill not only among senior management, foreign donors, and client but also with the construction team and various engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, structural, geotechnical etc. to derive optimize design and engineering solutions for various buildings and infrastructure projects. I believe in better understanding of problem solving with the help of appropriate technology and alternative use of material sensitive to climate & culture that is energy efficient and cost effective, using horizontal exchange of knowledge and participatory process within both my team, the local community and other stakeholder. While designing, I have endorsed participatory process and focused on climate, culture, energy and improved traditional construction methods. Some of the sectors that interests me most, are- rural architecture and its development; low-cost housing for slum developments; developing the living standards of micro entrepreneurs; improving or strengthening the traditional houses for disaster mitigation. My Dream Is to Establish a Self-Sustainable Platform That Will Bring a Growing Resource of Engineering or Architectural Talent to Assist the Communities in Needs and Use Design as A Tool for Problem Solving to Translate Humanities Needs & Desire into Accessible, Affordable and Viable Solution for Better Future.
