“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.” – Frank Gehry

SHIVANGI SINGH B.ARCH. UNDERGRADUATE 4TH YEAR

I’m a B.arch. undergraduate student from Sushant School of Art and Architecture. This journey has made me learn that spaces are not just about appeasing the eyes but creating nuanced and empirical structures which carry the element of warmth and sustainability in them, keeping in mind the era of globalization that we are in. I feel that ‘observation’ is an integral part of architectural learning, besides gaining conceptual knowledge.

Apart from parks and beaches, Pondicherry is known for its heritage buildings with only French architecture and some buildings with a blend of both French and Tamil architecture. The pictures on the other hand, Bhutan which is an architectural marvel in itself has buildings that of the Tibetan Buddhist style. Chennai which has seen the origins of the British empire, the city is well known for Dravidian architecture.

the estuary An U.A.V. Transit Hub

Semester : V Guide : Ar. Amit Gupta Ar. Ashwini Kher In collaboration with one team mate “Une maison est une machine-à-habiter” (“A house is a machine for living in”) The relationship between human constructs and nature (environment) needs to be mutually inclusive, symbiotic, harmonius (balance between consumption and production).

[01.00] ad_the estuary

The Estuary, an air vehicle transit hub is an ecological machine that aims to extend the analogy of machine, to ‘adaptive’ mechanisms, and places a pedagogical case for rethinking architectural assemblage as ‘Ecological Machines’; underlining the belief that ‘built’ habitat, a ‘collective’ of machines, needs to draw from and be responsive to its ecological location.

[01.00] ad_the estuary

A_deg > ad_the estuary

The world’s cities are expanding, and in the coming years, more than half of the population would live and work in cities. With the overcrowding of spaces, travelling from one place to another would take longer and will be much more complicated. With time, as the pace of human life is picking up and the ever-decreasing tolerance to stand in queues, seamless and easy transportation would be an integral component of the future. The Estuary, an Uber Air Vehicle (U.A.V) transit hub, is developed as an attempt to revamp the conventional transit hubs into accordance with the

rebuilding kashi: erosion or metamorphosis? Semester : VII Guide : Ar. Teenu J. Thaikattli

Dissertation

Abstract Varanasi being one of the oldest continuously consistently occupied urban communities of India, with its rich social legacy of culture invites huge number of tourists both from the nation and abroad to its land. The major part of these visitors are pilgrims who come to visit the world-famous shrine of Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the riverfront ghats to take holy dip in river Ganges. With the expansion in the travel industry because of transportation innovation the city is adapting toWW the issues to take into account such enormous populace of its resident just as the vacationers. Thinking about the quantity of guests, the developing necessities of its resident and to get the city together to global norms, different undertakings under Smart City Mission has begun. Among its different undertakings, “Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor Project” has been the focal point of all the major developments in the city which involves urban regeneration around the holy shrine. Similarly, many projects have been undergoing in respect to urban development of Varanasi to construct it into a smart city. This research focuses on the individuals or communities affected and displaced in the process of redevelopment around ghats and galis and to study the social impact that the intervention has created on the communities that lived as a whole and the individuals who make up that community by means of onsite interviews with the locals and officials as wells as understanding the historical context of the site in relation to the different phases of development that took place.

[09.00] dis_rebuilding kashi

This study, therefore, aspires to uncover the spatial qualities of the galis and ghats in terms of its physical characteristics based on the tool given by Reid Ewing, Clemente, and Handy, which includes imageability, enclosure, human scale, transparency, and complexity, and to establish the relevance of these qualities in Indian religious galis.
