IMST HOLIDAY REGION

MOBILITY IN THE IMST HOLIDAY REGION

While in days gone by, the mountains of Tyrol could be accessed only with great difficulty, the region today boasts an excellent transport infrastructure. No matter where they’re coming from and no matter what method of transport they choose, holidaymakers can reach Tyrol quickly and easily. Travelling by train or bus is one of the most relaxing ways to get here, be it from other parts of Austria or from countries such as Germany, Switzerland or Italy. Driving to Tyrol in your own car is also easy, whatever direction you’re coming from. Motorway travel requires a toll sticker (‘Vignette’), while all other roads can be used free of charge. And whatever route you take, stunning views are guaranteed! For guests planning to arrive by plane there are direct flights – some even daily – from many European cities to Innsbruck’s Kranebitten Airport. 9

Hahntennjoch is a mountain pass route that links the Upper Inn Valley with the Tyrolean Lechtal Valley. Running between Imst and Elmen, the 29 km-long scenic road is particularly popular with motor bikers. The summit of the pass, located at an altitude of 1,894 m, marks the border between the two municipalities of Imst and Pfafflar and, at the same time, between the districts of Imst and Reutte. The narrow, winding road, which includes gradients of up to 18.9%, is closed to caravans and vehicles over 14 tons. The road is closed to all traffic during the winter months (November to April). From the Hahntennjoch pass you can hike over the Steinjöchl col to the Anhalter Hütte mountain hut (2,042 m) in around 1 ½ hours, or over the Scharnitzsattel saddle (2,441 m) to the Muttekopfhütte mountain hut (1,934 m) in around 3 hours. ORIENTEERING

Orienteering is a sport that involves hiking and/or running combined with mental exercise. Using a map (and a compass) participants have to find specific points in the forest. The locations of the control points are marked on the map (small circles with numbers or letters). The objective is to find all the points in the correct order and, under competition conditions, to do so as quickly as possible, The map offers various different routes (blue, red and black) and, when time is irrelevant, participants can tackle the sport at their own pace.

THE STARKENBERGER PANORAMIC ROUTE. A NEW LONG-DISTANCE HIKING HIGHLIGHT Long-distance hiking routes are enjoying increasing popularity. They offer walkers a deeper insight into a specific region and often follow a river, or they may lead along routes of historical interest. Several such long-distance hiking routes lead right through the Imst Holiday Region. We welcome numerous guests who are following, for example, the ancient Roman route ‘Via Claudia Augusta’ or the ‘Way of Saint James’. And in spring 2018 a new route – the ‘Starkenberger Panoramic Route’ - was unveiled to the delight of hiking fans from all over the world. The ‘Starkenberger Panoramic Route’ offers a hiking trail packed with highlights. As its name suggests, the noble house of Starkenberg plays a significant role with the route connecting fortresses and castles of the once mighty and proud aristocratic family that, for over 400 years, occupied a ruling position here in Tyrol. In the 12th century the Starkenbergers commissioned the building of their ancestral family castle near the village of Tarrenz, and thus the area between Ehrenberg/ Fernpass and Kronburg became the heartland of the Starkernbergers’ power and authority, the seat of a dynasty that came to an end in 1452 with the death of Sigismund. UNIQUE PANORAMIC ROUTE BETWEEN THE FERNPASS AND LANDECK

The Starkenberger Panoramic Route is divided into seven stages and each stage is truly special in its own right. The route repeatedly takes walkers along sections of great historical interest, including the Via Claudia Augusta, the ancient salt-trading route and the Way of St. James. No fewer than seven lakes and countless streams along the way make this a particularly refreshing experience rich in variety and scenic diversity. And, of course, the route boasts numerous castles, fortresses, ruins and all kinds of interesting sights from the past, thus immersing walkers in history with every step they take. 46

What makes the Starkenberger Panoramic Route so particularly appealing is the vast richness of variety it offers. It is not only the stunning scenery and unique natural beauty that make this route so fascinating, but its combination of memorable visual impressions and an unrivalled close-to-nature experience against a majestic Alpine backdrop. One thing is certain – you’ll fall in love with this hiking route from the very first step! The trail is vibrant and varied and offers one surprise after another. You can be walking amid pristine, untouched wilderness one minute and find yourself in a quaint little hamlet the next with a village fountain just waiting for you to take a refreshing drink of cold water. The route takes you across open, sun-drenched pastures and through deep, shady gorges, through pleasantly cool forests and sleepy little villages. Breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding mountains open up again and again before you. Numerous idyllic resting spots and convivial huts and restaurants offer pleasant places to stop along the way. The route offers many detour options too, enabling you to visit places of interest as well as the beautiful towns of Imst or Landeck. ood to know: The 52 kilometre-long Starkenberger Panoramic G Route is perfectly suited to inexperienced hikers too and can be covered quite easily in four to five days. Many hotels and guesthouses along the way cater specifically to the needs and wishes of hiking guests and offer a warm welcome to those ‘on the trail’ of the Starkenberger dynasty. Tip: Brochures with detailed information on the Starkenberger Panoramic Route are available in all Imst Tourism Association offices. Fotos: Bernhard

Shared holiday experiences are often the most precious ones.

Summer, sunshine and fun, fun, fun every day! Those are the magic ingredients for an interesting, enjoyable and relaxing holiday. The region’s various themed trails offer a fun-filled, fascinating experience for children and adults alike and, at the same time, they help children appreciate the value of nature. On a family rafting tour over foaming waves everyone’s ‘in the same boat’, while on a horseback trek happy hearts beat as one in rhythm with the hoof beats. Many of the hiking trails and tracks are suitable for pushchairs, and the local playgrounds offer hours of fun for little ones. © Imster Bergbahnen – Gerhard Berger

EARTH PYRAMIDS

NATURE

The earth pyramids or ‘towers’ of sedimentary rock are very rare in Tyrol. In the Waldertal valley between Roppen and Arzl you can marvel at these fascinating ‘wonders of nature’, ideally during a walk round the circular trail (approx. 1 ½ hours).

SINNESBRUNN – A NATURAL BEAUTY SPOT

This area of natural beauty takes its name from the little pilgrimage chapel and from the healing spring water. Hidden in this hilly, undulating terrain, with a light sprinkling of spruce trees, are countless little moors created during the ice age. Far away from the traffic in the valley or any background noise, this is a place where you can savour nature and serene tranquillity.

MILSER AU

© Imst Tourismus – Thorsten Wenzler

The aim of the Milser Au revitalisation project is to preserve the ecosystem of the grey alder alluvial forest on a long-term basis, and to breathe new life into the natural habitat in order to prevent any further ecological deterioration of the gallery forest. The revitalisation project, together with the construction of near-natural river control structures, has resulted in the creation of flood retention spaces and valuable habitats for rare animal and plant species.

Breathtaking natural beauty, a particularly rich variety of flower species, an unusual geological formation and a high-alpine fauna – the Muttekopf area boasts a wealth of natural gems in a setting of unparalleled tranquillity. Located at the entrance to the Gurgltal valley, this is one of the most gorgeous spots in Tyrol, a secluded area of natural beauty, perfect for lingering and relaxing. With the former ‘Sigmundsburg’ hunting lodge protruding out of the water, the lake offers a spectacular photo motif. The romantic ambience is perfect for long walks and hikes. Those who prefer to take it easier can explore the lake on a pedal boat.

64

Almost 70 years ago Hermann Gmeiner, with the support of a group of dedicated men and women, laid the foundations for a global humanitarian idea. The incredible success story began back in 1949 with the founding of the association ‘Societas Socialis’ in Innsbruck. During the same year, construction work began on the very first SOS Children’s Village in the Sonnberg district of Imst. It was the start of what grew to become a worldwide concept.

IMST – THE TOWN OF FOUNTAINS

Of the town’s more than 40 fountains, 18 of the most historically significant ones have been meticulously renovated. Today they serve as decorative features in the town’s landscape, but in earlier times they had a vital economic and social function. Almost no houses had water pipes, so local inhabitants fetched the indispensable elixir of life from the nearest fountain for cooking and for washing – which is why there is a little basin beside almost every fountain in which even the potatoes were washed. The large basins served as watering stops for the cattle. All the fountains naturally provide clean, fresh drinking water. Further information is available in our fountain brochure ‘Imst Wasser’.

WiFi is available in teh Kramergasse between the Imst Tourismus Information Office and the Lainplatz, and on the Postplatz square in the direction of the town centre. It’s free of charge but use is limited to one hour.

STARKENBERGER BEER MYTH

EVENTS & CULTURE

Several years ago the 200-year-old brewery was meticulously modernised and the 700-year-old castle was given a new lease of life. In the castle the debris that had amassed over the centuries was eliminated and the old plasterwork was removed to reveal walls that were even older. The rooms were restored to their original functions, along with the countless historical corridors, some of which served as secret passageways! Thus a tour through the castle evolved, that takes visitors from up above the brewery down to the deepest vaults, cellars and passageways. Today the brewery and the castle offer a fascinating experience and a close insight into the world of brewing from its very beginnings to the present day.

In earlier times the Gurgltal valley was one of the most important mining areas in Tyrol. The nine authentically reproduced buildings in the ‘Knappenwelt Gurgltal’ mining village in Tarrenz provide an intriguing world of exploration and discovery. Immerse yourself in the fascination of the world of mining and embark on a journey back in time! In addition, you can pay a visit to the permanent exhibition entitled ‘The Healer from Gurgltal’ which draws you into the realm of myths and legends that surround a woman who lived and carried out her ‘healing’ in the valley some 400 years ago. You should plan in around 1 ½ hours for the museum. Special children’s afternoons, children’s birthdays and night-time guided tours for groups can be arranged on request.

THE HEALER FROM GURGLTAL – A WOMAN SHROUDED IN MYSTERY

In 2008, human remains of a woman who lived at the time of the Thirty Years’ War (1618 - 1648) were found in the forest of Strad, a hamlet belonging to Tarrenz. The cause of death, as well as the identity of the 30 - 40 year-old woman, still remain a mystery. Due to the numerous artefacts also found, it can be assumed that she was somebody experienced in the art of healing. The newly created museum in the Knappenwelt Gurgltal offers visitors an insight into life in the Gurgltal region in the 17th century and, in particular, into the work of the mysterious healer. www.knappenwelt.at

‘HAUS DER FASNACHT’ CARNIVAL MUSEUM

This museum makes use of state-of-the-art technology to present an authentic, indeed archaic custom in all its richness, a tradition which, in 2012, was added to the UNESCO list of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’. Film excerpts from the early 1930s to the present day offer visitors a clear insight into the movements, the primal power, the rhythms and the mysteries of the masked parade OPENING TIMES Friday 4.00 pm – 7.00 pm and by prior arrangement

The inhabitants of the village of Nassereith celebrate the ‘Fasnacht’ carnival every three years. At the end of the Fasnacht celebration, after the church bells have summoned to prayer in the evening, the masks disappear for a further three years. If you don’t want to wait that long, then you can see some of them in the ‘Fasnachtshaus’ carnival museum in Nassereith. Here the colourful world of ‘Schellerlaufen’ and co. is on the agenda every Friday. Visitors can marvel at the vibrantly coloured costumes, the elaborate wooden masks created by renowned local artists and the fascinating ancient traditions. Modern film technology brings this rich and lively custom to life, almost giving visitors the feeling of actually being there in the thick of it all. In September 2012 the ‘Nassereither Schellerlaufen’ was added to the UNESCO list of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’.

2ND WINE & FOOD CELEBRATION, TARRENZ

The 1st Wine and Food Celebration in Tarrenz on 17th September 2017 was a resounding success. It attracted hundreds of visitors who enjoyed interesting discussions with the ‘Via Claudia Augusta’ winemakers, tasted a delectable glass or two, and savoured the original ‘Via Claudia Augusta barley soup’ accompanied by homemade bread.

AUTUMN IN THE ALPS

A time of festivals, traditions and customs ... Autumn in the Imst Holiday Region offers a spectacle for all the senses. Mother Nature paints the landscape with vivid hues. The Indian summer offers skies of deepest blue. And the views of the mountain peaks and pastures are crystal clear. No wonder that this season has always inspired the inhabitants of the Imst Holiday Region to rejoice, to organise festivals and celebrate their customs and traditions. One of the most enjoyable autumn folk festivals is the ‘Schafschied’ in Tarrenz, when the return of the sheep from the Alpine pastures is celebrated in the village. The annual driving down of the sheep from the Hinterberg Alm is a spectacle not to be missed. At the Eagle Festival in Hoch-Imst everything ‘circles’ around the theme of eagles. Further information can be found in the Alpine Autumn brochure.

SCHAFER ‘SHEEP’ WEEKS, 19.08.–21.10.2018

In keeping with the time of year when all the livestock return back to the valley from the high mountain pastures, many of the local restaurants and inns offer special events and culinary specialities. 78
