N EWSLE T TER IMZ INTERNAL NEWS IMZ WORLD MUSIC FILM SCREENINGS AT WOMEX 2011 CALL FOR ENTRY! 15 April is the deadline for entries to the 10th IMZ-organised World Music Film Screenings at WOMEX taking place 26 October – 30 October 2011 for the third and last time in Copenhagen, Denmark. Go for it and submit any recently produced world music programmes that have not been presented at WOMEX before. We are looking for undeniable cinematic quality – a film that grabs and moves the viewer, with an intriguing storyline, dramatic composition, strong visuals and first-rate camera work. We welcome new, unheard, unseen subjects and niches but are open to established artists as well. In addition the quality of the music itself is most important and one of the key criteria for the selection process. Submit your proposals and find all necessary information here: Please note our new conditions this year which include a submittion fee of €60 per programme for non-IMZ members as well as a handling fee of €150 for the programmes selected for the screenings. Have a look at the general information sheet in order to see what the fees cover. Futhermore, the proposed entries may also become part of our World music film on Tour non-profit distribution project.
WOMEX is “the most important international professional market of world music of every kind. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences and documentary films. It contributes to networking as an effective means of promoting music and culture of all kinds across frontiers.” (UNESCO Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity) The 2010 edition saw 2440 delegates from 94 countries and 650 exhibiting companies and presented 59 acts including 300 artists from 38 countries, featuring 5 nighttime stages at the spectacular DR Koncerthuset and one Daycase Stage. More than 60 speakers from 21 countries shared their professional know-how with WOMEX delegates in 20 Conference Sessions centring The Live, The Recorded, and The Digital Experience, as well as the "Vision Beyond". N EWSL ET TER IMZ MEMBER NEWS ACCENTUS MUSIC Proudly Presents… The Philharmonics in a Viennese Coffeehouse: Johann Strauß’s waltzes arrangements by Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern In 1921, Alban Berg, Anton Webern and Arnold Schoenberg set out to rescue their Society for Private Musical Performances from financial ruin by making arrangements of some of Johann Strauß’s most popular waltzes. Their aim was to organise “model performances” for their members: elsewhere, they argued, the “constraints of everyday musical life” meant that performances could not be properly rehearsed. But they were unable to find enough paying members to cover their costs. As a result, they were reduced to giving endless concerts simply

as fundraisers. The four Strauß waltzes were first performed on 27 May 1921, with the composers themselves as executants: Berg on the harmonium, Schoenberg on the first violin and Webern on the cello. The soloists of The Philharmonics – an ensemble made up of musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic – perform these arrangements again at a Café Sperl, a typical Viennese coffeehouse on 9 March 2011. The programme includes: Wein, Weib und Gesang op. 418 arranged by Alban Berg, Kaiserwalzer op. 437, Lagunen-Walzer, op. 411 – after motives from the comic opera Eine Nacht in Venedig, Rosen aus dem Süden, op. 388 arranged by Arnold Schoenberg, Schatzwalzer op. 418 – from the operetta Der Zigeunerbaron arranged by Anton Webern a.o.

N EWSL ET TER IMZ MEMBER NEWS SERVUSTV AT FIFA IN MONTREAL Traces To Nowhere – The Conductor Carlos Kleiber was chosen by the Selection Committee for the 29th International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA), to be held in Montréal, 17 – 27 March 2011. Traces to Nowhere by Eric Schulz is the first documentary to be made about the exceptional conductor Carlos Kleiber, who died in 2004. The classical legend enthralled his audiences with his intensive and original interpretations. Kleiber was a perfectionist who painstakingly sought to discover the composers’ intention in their works and who abhorred the trend of creating a musical spectacle. He also avoided publicity as much as he possibly could. Traces To Nowhere breaks through the wall of silence surrounding the great genius for the first time, presenting material which has never been seen before. The film tells the story of Kleiber’s last journey from Munich to the Slovenian mountain village of Konjsica where he died. In a series of sensitive interviews, friends such as Placido Domingo, Otto Schenk and – for the first time - Kleiber’s sister Veronika share new insights into the life of one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. The ServusTV production will be published on DVD by Arthaus Musik. Coming soon… Contact: Frank Gerdes at frank.gerdes@servustv.at
