Five young singers win $15,000 cash prizes in the prestigious competition that has launched the careers of numerous major opera stars. On 18 March, The Metropolitan Opera announced the winners of the 2012 National Council Auditions. They are: Janai Brugger, soprano from Darien, IL; Anthony Clark Evans, baritone from Owensboro, KY; Matthew Grills, tenor from Newtown, CT; Margaret Mezzacappa, mezzo-soprano from Euclid, OH; and Andrey Nemzer, countertenor from Moscow, Russia. The winners were selected from nine finalists who performed arias with the Met Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Davis.

PERSONNEL NEWS Mikuri Takahashi Leaving NHK Ms. Mikuri Takahashi, the assistant to Mr. Masayuki Ikeno at Classic Programme Co-Production, left NHK on 16 March, after supporting and contributing to the team for 13 years. She is on her way to her new career at one of NHK’s affiliates, starting from April. Thank you all for your warm support to Mikuri for the past years and please join us welcoming Yuka Chikaraishi, who is taking over.

On 14 March 2012, the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) launched its third call for funding requests for programmes/projects and preparatory assistance requests that aim to foster the emergence of a dynamic cultural sector at the national and/or local level, primarily through activities facilitating the introduction of new cultural policies and cultural industries, or strengthening existing ones.

Government authorities and NGOs from developing countries that are Parties to the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, as well as international NGOs (INGOs), are eligible to apply.

Currently, the IFCD is providing close to US$ 3 million in funding for 48 projects in 35 developing countries, covering a wide range of areas, from the development and implementation of cultural policies, to capacity-building of cultural entrepreneurs, mapping of cultural industries and the creation of new cultural industry business models.

Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen – Orchestra in Residence since 2004 – give two concerts. The London Symphony Orchestra return to Beethovenfest Bonn as the third Orchestra in Residence with Michael Tilson Thomas making his debut at the festival.

András Schiff begins a two-year complete Beethoven Piano Sonata cycle. The Borodin Quartet begins a three-year complete Beethoven String Quartet cycle.

In the Bird Cage marks the centenary of John Cage’s birth with an exclusive Cage Night in three venues in Bonn’s “museum mile”. Top orchestras return to Bonn, including Andris Nelsons and the City of B i r m i n g h a m S y m p h o n y O rc h e s t ra a n d B a ye ri s c h e s Staatsorchester with Kent Nagano as well as internationally acclaimed soloists and ensembles including Viviane Hagner, Lisa Batiashvili, Susan Graham, Emanual Ax and Kit Armstrong, the Artemis Quartet, the King’s Singers and Samy Deluxe & Tsunami Band. Two youth orchestras perform at Beethovenfest Bonn for the first time: the Turkish National Youth (Philharmonic Orchestra with Cem Mansur) and the third orchestra from the Venezuelan ‘Sistema’ – the Youth Orchestra of Caracas with Dietrich Paredes and Andrés Rivas.

N EWSLE T TER RELATED INDUSTRY NEWS Atelier for Young Festival Managers LJUBLJANA 2012, 14 – 21 October 2012 Call for Application The Atelier for Young Festival Managers is an intense, rigorous 7 days training programme addressed at emerging artistic festival directors worldwide. Initiated by the European Festivals Association (EFA), the fifth Atelier will be hosted and co-organised by the Ljubljana Festival from 14 – 21 October 2012. It will bring together 45 young festival managers and around ten renowned festival directors from all over the world.

Applications have to be submitted until 31 May 2012.

“The Atelier for Young Festival Managers is about formulating experiences and passing on knowledge to a next generation of festival makers: knowledge about programming a festival, thematically focusing on the very essence of arts festivals – the art and the artist,” explains Atelier Coordinator Hugo De Greef.

The Atelier LJUBLJANA 2012 follows the guiding motto “The true role of a festival is to help artists to dare, to engage in new projects”, a phrase coined by Bernard Faivre d’Arcier, former director of the Festival d’Avignon, President of the Lyon Biennial and one of the Atelier’s Mentors since the first edition in 2006.
