Editor’s Note At long last it would appear that some people with the authority to do so have taken a stance against some of the issue’s which have plagued the island for several years, and also that local media have constantly reported about with the hope of getting them resolved. I’m not going to mention what these issues are as they really have been reported about quite enough for people to know what they are. But I for one am grateful that somebody has finally taken notice and that they are willing to get this Island back on track. Many of the issues do not affect a large majority of the expats that reside here, but it does affect what keeps Phuket and Thailand running, its tourism industry. Let’s hope that we see some of these much needed changes put in place ready for the not so distant high season. Russell Smith Editor

ANTHEM WAKE PARK THE FIRST CLOCKWISE CABLE PARK IN ASIA

I
t comes as a pleasant surprise to see a big advertising board indicating there is a wake park opened in the CherngTalay; Srisoonthorn Sub District area. For those who love the
adrenaline rush from playing such a cool and extreme water sport, this is the place to be. Anthem Wakepark is a wake-boarding or cable-ski park built within a huge fresh water lake surrounded by natural and mountainous landscape located within Manik Village right in front of Temple Manik. Anthem is just 20 minutes from Phuket International Airportand 5 minutes away from Laguna Phuket Resort Complex. This unique wakepark is the result of an effort to build a strong and friendly wakeboarding community of passionate wakeboarders and wakeskaters residing in Phuket.Anthem claims to be the first ever clockwise cable park in Asia, designed to make this extreme sport easy and appreciated by all ages from 4 to 70. All amateurs and professionals can achieve their desired fitness and health while playing and practicing this sport. Anthem Wakepark has chosen world-class ‘Sesitec’ cable manufacturer to install their cable system. This system comprises of 6 towers, 647m long cable track with 8 carriers and stands 11.5m above water level. The length between each tower is designed to accommodate a maximum of only 2 riders to minimise cable ‘swaying’ disruption while each rider can execute their individual tricks. With the clockwise cable, all advantages of surface air tricks for goofy stance and regular stance riders are reversed. Proficient riders will now have the opportunity to improve their individual riding skills to practice and ride better on their unnatural side. It takes less than one half minute to complete one circuit around all 6 towers.

that have been created overseas may be legal in Thailand; however they are subject first to translation and acceptance by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. This can be a difficult process, and if it is not accepted, your foreign Will is effectively unenforceable. For the avoidance of doubt and unforeseen complications, it is highly advisable to have a separate Will executed in Thailand to cover any Thai assets and designed to be in sync with any other foreign Will that you may have in place. If you die without a Will, Thai law outlines who will receive your estate with no regard to your heir’s needs or your own specific wishes. There are six classes of statutory heirsaccording to the Thai Civil and Commercial Code Section 1629, and subject to the provisions of Section 1630 paragraph 2, each class is entitled to inherit in the following order:
• • • • • •
Direct descendants (and/or Wife or Husband*)of the deceased Parents of the deceased Brothers and sisters of full blood of the deceased Brothers and sisters of half-blood of the deceased Grandfathers and grandmothers of the deceased Uncles and aunts of the deceased
* If you are legally married, your spouse will be a statutory heir subject to the special provisions of Section 1635. This section outlines the entitlements of your spouse in relation to any other statutory heirs you are survived by, essentially splitting the inheritance in varying proportions with the aforementioned hierarchy, commencing at 50%. In the event that you do not have a valid Will or any one of the above statutory heirs, your estate will devolve to the Thai Government. For foreigners here in Thailand, it is critical that you have a Will to ensure your estate is distributed to your rightful heirs.

The Regent Hotel Cape Panwa has become the first to go live with a new online service for Newspapers and Magazines from NewspaperDirect-Phuket. On the 1st August, The Regent was the first hotel on the island to launch free online newspaper to their guests. The hotel is tucked away in a tranquil corner of Cape Panwa, recognised as one of the most beautiful spots on the island and overlooking a secluded bay of pure white sand lapped by the Andaman Sea. One of the most important reasons Brice Borin, the General Manager, has chosen the PressReader Hotzone Digital Service from NewspaperDirect is that it is compatible with the hotel’s policy of providing environmentally friendly solutions. The application gives access to over 2000 titles, from 100 countries in 56 languages. It also keeps the guests informed of news and events in their home country and a service that discerning guests have come to expect from a prestige hotel. The service is pre-loaded on to all the i-Pads provided in the Guest Rooms, and it can be downloaded to the guest personal device whether they have apple, android, blackberry or windows. The Regent Hotel has also been nominated in World Hotel Luxury Awards 2014 as the pinnacle of achievement for luxury hotels and spas worldwide. Why travel insurance is important? Travel insurance for some is perceived unnecessary and a waste of money when planning their trip. But this small amount of money could mean a lot should you have to deal with unexpected incidents overseas. Travel insurance makes things different. Your trip can be an unforgettable travel experience or a disaster. Imagine if your luggage got lost or you missed your connecting flight. What if you break a leg in a road accident? It is hard to make some people understand that medical treatment could end costing more than your whole trip budget. When it happens, it happens. Be well prepared. It is wise to invest a little more to secure your trip.
FOREIGN TRAVEL
INSURANCE FAQS How to choose your travel insurance? It is recommended to thoroughly read the policy before purchase. You should pay attention to the details, especially its coverage, and make sure your policy covers the activities you are going to have on a trip. For those who make several trips a year, you may consider annual multi-trip insurance to save you money. Here’s a checklist that might help you sort out the most important points you need to watch out for:
What your travel insurance policy should cover? • medical and health cover for an injury or sudden illness abroad • 24-hour emergency service and assistance • personal liability cover in case you’re sued for causing injury or • • • •

Lost baggage on flights Do not rely on compensation from an airline if it loses your luggage. By law, airlines only have to pay a specified minimum value per kilo of lost luggage. This is unlikely to cover the full value of your things.
Legal expenses cover Taking out legal expenses cover will help you to pursue compensation or damages following personal injury while you’re abroad – very important in countries without a legal aid system.

The biggest change for the vast majority of iPhone buyers will be iOS 7 which has been in testing since its announcement at Apple’s developer conference in June. The new software includes a radical redesign of the overall look of the iPhone’s menus and icons, but the other new features are largely incremental updates, such as improved notifications, better photo-organizing abilities and additional capabilities for developers. ADOPT A RESCUE DOG TODAY ?
Hi my name is Foxy,
As you can see I live up to my beautiful name, I’m pretty “FOXY “ don’t you think ?
I
was lucky enough to be rescued from the NE of Thailand close to the border of Cambodia where I was on my way to become another poor dog that would be sold, skinned alive & eaten for dog meat. But thankfully the folks from “DOGGIE HEAVEN” rescue sanctuary saw the torment I was going thru & saved me from going thru this hell.
allow me to regain my trust in the human race again & have a normal life, full of love & compassion. If you can find a place in your home for me, I enjoy the company of other dogs, as long as they are not aggressive or bossy. Please contact: Sherin.peace@ gmail.com or check out the Doggie Heaven website for more photos of other dog meat trade dogs also looking for new homes www.doggieheaven.net
Now I’m safe & recovering from my horrific ordeal at Doggie Heaven in Phuket, getting plenty of love, good food & learning to love again. I’m still a little afraid of humans (especially the ones, I have not come to know) but I’m becoming more relaxed & trusting every day. I love to be held close & cuddled by my new friends at the sanctuary, and think going for a run on the beach every morning is a real treat, because it’s been some time since I’ve had that freedom to run free.
AT DOGGIE HEAVEN WE RESUCE DOGS WHO ARE INJURED, ILL OR NEGLECTED & GIVE THEM WHAT THEY NEED TO RECOVER. WITH THE COMBINATION OF GOOD FOOD, THE RIGHT MEDICINE, LOTS OF LOVE & TIME TO REST, THEY FIND THEMSELVES RECOVERED & READY TO ENJOY LIFE AGAIN - THEN WE DO OUR BEST TO FIND THEM SUITABLE LOVING HOMES.
More than anything I’d love to find a new home with a family who are gentle & will

Finding the GEMS: Looking at Female Entrepreneurship in Thailand Our September member meeting will feature Ms. Ulrike Guelich, Lecturer and Researcher at the School of Entrepreneurship and Management, Bangkok University, Bangkok. It is at Bangkok University that the School of Entrepreneurship & Management (SEM), Thailand team of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Project is located. The GEM project is the most prestigious observatory on entrepreneurship worldwide and measures and characterizes the scope of entrepreneurial activity, comparing it internationally since 1999. In 2012, 69 economies who represented an estimated 74% of the world’s population and 87% of the world’s GDP took part in the GEM survey. The annual survey is conducted to capture the profiles of the entrepreneurs and the state of the institutions and framework conditions to start up and to grow businesses worldwide. The data is based on two main data sources: Adult Population Survey (APS) and National Expert Survey (NES). You can find Thailand-specific information on entrepreneurial
framework conditions and findings on Thai entrepreneurship in the last GEM Thailand Report.
Ms. Guelich notes that in a global comparison, Thailand has some outstanding features regarding entrepreneurship:
• • • •
An equal number (even slightly higher) of men and women entrepreneurs. High entrepreneurship rates in all stages. Highest rate of established business owners. Gender equality in entrepreneurship.
In her presentation, Ms. Guelich will identify possible explanations for this phenomenon in the Thai context, and give some insight from interviews with successful women entrepreneurs in big family businesses in Thailand. We can discuss a wide range of points where Thailand differs from other economies when it comes to entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial attitudes, aspirations and ways to do business. Date Thursday September 12, 2013 Time 6:15 PM Where
Ulrike Guelich Born in Germany, Ms. Guelich is currently a Lecturer and Researcher at the School of Entrepreneurship and Management, Bangkok University, Bangkok.
