10th Anniversary Edition I would like to thank all the companies, individuals and suppliers who have stuck by us through this decade of publishing In Oxford Magazine. The magazine has been the bedrock of our publishing company that has gone from strength to strength, especially with the launch of B4 Magazine in Oxfordshire and our recent entry into Berkshire. Richard and our Chief Designer, Keith Simpson, contribute massively to our success and we certainly wouldn’t be in our present position without them. Rob Scotcher has taken over from Keith designing In Oxford and has continued to develop and improve the Magazine under Keith’s watchful eye. For the future, we are entrusting the development of In Oxford to Paige Walford who has already injected a fresh wave of enthusiasm and ideas. The next decade promises to be one of expansion and excitement. We can’t wait. Colin Rosser Chairman

Woodstock Feature in Woodstock Join In Oxford's Paige Walford as she embarks on a quest to find the best Woodstock has to offer in 24 Hours
I was really looking forward to spending 24 hours in the historic town of Woodstock, the home of Blenheim Palace, with lots of stories to tell. So did Woodstock live up to my expectations? I arrived in Woodstock at about 5.30pm, and made my way to The Kings Arms Hotel on Market Street. The welcoming doors of the Kings Arms opened up into a surprisingly cosy yet modern space. I discovered that Sarah, one of the owners, takes great pride in the appearance of the hotel, which is undergoing continuous refurbishment. The interior design created the perfect atmosphere; I felt at home instantly, but even though The Kings Arms in parts has a homely feel, it has a real elegance about it.
“The interior design created the perfect atmosphere” We went down for dinner at 7pm, eagerly awaiting what we hoped would be a mouthwatering meal, especially after hearing that the restaurant at The Kings Arms has recently been awarded an AA Rosette. The Atrium restaurant offers a mix of modern and classic English dishes, using seasonal Oxfordshire produce wherever possible. We were seated in what used to be the Billiard room, which has now been completely opened up and revamped creating a spacious dining quarter. To start, my guest tried something new to him, sea bass, whilst I had the broccoli soup, both great choices, mouth-wateringly delicious. For our mains we both had the chicken hotpot, wonderfully wholesome and full of flavour. Not only was the food excellent, but the service was faultless. I was impressed by the fact that each and every member of staff had a smile on their faces, something you don’t often see. “We are like a family” said Sarah, and I think this perfectly sums up The Kings Head – there really is a special vibe running through the whole establishment. I was able to spend the next day walking around Woodstock after having a tasty full English breakfast at The Kings Arms in the

morning. Whilst admiring all of the unique shops and art galleries that Woodstock has to offer, I realised how relaxed I was, drifting around Woodstock, away from the chain stores and huge crowds. The pace of life is something to savour. In Woodstock, each shop had its own style and certainly its own identity. From art to an Aga, fine antiques, furniture and fashion, places to stay and places to eat, Woodstock, with its ivy-clad façades, has something to offer everyone the perfect place for a day out, or a weekend away. At about 1.00pm I was starting to feel particularly peckish again. Fortunately, this was lucky as we were booked in for lunch at La Galleria, an Italian restaurant on Market Street tucked in beside the Town Hall. Freshly cooked Italian dishes are served, from simple lunches to gastronomic three course dinners. Upon arrival, my guest and I were warmly greeted by the staff. Lucio, the charming owner, came and introduced himself to us and had a surprise in store……..he was going to choose our meal! What a wonderful surprise it turned out to be! For our starter, we were served a hearty pasta dish, filled with potato and covered in a cheese sauce. Then for our main, which I was particularly impressed with, we had one of my favourite meals, lamb in a rosemary sauce (one of Lucio’s secret recipes),
“So, to answer my first question, an emphatic ‘yes’, Woodstock certainly lived up to my expectations and more.” served with vegetables and roast potatoes - a warming and totally filling lunch time meal. To finish, I had a caramel cake and my guest had a chocolate mousse which he devoured with gusto! I can’t believe we ate so much – all that walking I suppose! By now it was around 3.00pm. Replete (and some) from our meal, we still had one place to visit, the Oxfordshire Museum. I had heard lots about this wonderful museum. It was very busy with people of all ages; there are a variety of rooms to see, varying from dinosaurs to the history of Woodstock. My personal favourite was a room where you could look up your family history following a step-by step programme. At the end of our visit we sat down in the café admiring the outdoor area that The Oxfordshire Museum has to offer and for those dinosaur lovers there is a little surprise for you in store outside....you’ll have to visit to find out more! So, to answer my first question, an emphatic ‘yes’, Woodstock certainly lived up to my expectations and more. There is lots to see and it has a lovely, relaxed feel about it. If you are after the perfect day out, where you can admire a street untouched by chain stores with freshly cooked food and somewhere with bundles of history, then Woodstock is certainly the place for you. Finally, on behalf of the In Oxford team, I would like to say thank you to Anne Stabler for making this feature possible.

There is so much in store for 2012 at Blenheim Palace, from a special exhibition of 20th century British artist, John Piper, and a Wedding Fair in February, celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June, and the 2012 Olympics in July, family entertainment with Peppa Pig returning at Easter with the Piplings, Jousting tournaments, a special installation of ceramics in the Gardens, to Themed Tours of the Palace and Gardens, and Afternoon teas, Sunday lunches and picnic hampers to make your visit complete. To celebrate the opening of the new season, Blenheim Palace will host its very first art exhibition a display of work by the renowned British artist, John Piper (1903-1992). The exhibition from 11th February – 9th April will mainly focus on Piper’s depictions of Blenheim Palace but also explore the interlinking strains of his Oxfordshire connections, his writing, his architectural drawings and paintings of other country houses, as well as some of his collaborative work - prints, stained glass, books, ceramics and tapestry - all of which display the exceptional versatility of his creative output. Piper is well known for his deep-rooted love of English architecture and the countryside. A series of eleven water colours (including some iconic images of the Palace, which so effectively convey the drama of its Baroque architecture) were undertaken in the last decade of the artist’s life and remain a splendid manifestation of his mature work. Blenheim Palace, Park and Gardens From the inspirational history of the Palace, to the beauty of the surrounding parkland and formal gardens, Blenheim Palace offers a memorable day out for all. The John Piper Exhibition will be on display in the Long Library inside the Palace. Blenheim Palace is home to the 11th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and his family, and is the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The splendour and tranquillity of the ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland and the Formal Gardens are unrivalled in Britain. Restaurant Review
Qumins, located at St. Clements, offers superb Indian cuisine and first class service and is perfectly situated just outside of the City Centre. Before my visit, I had heard so many good things about this award-winning restaurant, and now I was going to get a chance to have a taste for myself. The modern decor and fantastically dimmed mood lighting created a tasteful and stylish atmosphere for all to enjoy. It becomes clear as soon as you walk through the doors that Ali, the owner, takes great pride in the appearance of this fine establishment, with the neatly fanned serviettes and pristine wine glasses delicately placed. Upon our arrival, we were shown to our seats by the courteous and attentive staff. As we settled, we realised that although it was only 7 on a Thursday evening, and a time in the year when the students weren’t in town , Qumins was still fairly busy. The menu is extensive and well-rounded, and as we were quite overwhelmed by the choice, Ali stepped in to throw a few suggestions our way. We eventually came to a decisio. To start we had the Popadums accompanied by an amazingly diverse and colourful selection of sauces, made from original recipes and created on the premises using specialist skills and ingredients, my personal favourite being Mango Chutney. Secondly came our starters. I had Meat Samosas, which were wonderfully spicy and my guest had the King Prawns which were cooked in spices, herbs and served with Puri bread. Once we had devoured our starters, it didn’t take long for our mains to follow. Everything was so well presented and I must admit it smelt sooo good...I couldn’t wait to dive in. My partner had the Chicken Rogan, a curry cooked in tomato purée, garlic and special Kashmiri masata – very well spiced and topped with sautéed tomato. I, on the other hand, cowered away from the spicy curry’s and went for the traditional Chicken Korma, cooked in a rich almond coconut gravy and finished with fresh cream. This is for those with a more delicate pallet. We had Special Rice, which was light, delicate and cooked to perfection, along with a decent portion of garlic Naan Bread. The presentation of the food was excellent, obviously created with care and precision, and the staff were consistently attentive between courses. To finish, Ali persuaded us to try some Indian tea, a completely new concept to both my guest and I. When served, you immediately smell the cinnamon, the plant extracts, and all the secret ingredients this drink includes. I must admit for those milky tea drinkers out there this isn’t the drink for you; however, for those adventurous types this is a must try; with the perfect concoction of ingredients with the purest of flavours, the perfect way to finish a meal. We had a delightful evening at Qumins and I highly recommend visiting this stylish and attractive restaurant with wonderful quality cuisine and staff. It’s the perfect destination for couples, families or parties of friends, whether you’re celebrating a special event or just looking for an upmarket dining experience. There’s a lovely atmosphere, the prices are reasonable and I can’t fault the service. I am already planning my next visit!!! Restaurant Review
Browns achieved ‘Oxford institution’ status many years ago. Located conveniently in the centre of Oxford, but just far enough away from the busiest shopping streets to give it a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, the restaurant attracts a wide range of customers from families to businessmen, students to tourists. In the summer tables spill out onto the pavement emphasising the French brassiere feel, while in the colder winter months the restaurant always looks friendly, warm and enticing. Inside, the décor has an informal feel with wooden tables and chairs, defined dining areas each with of five or six tables, and a clever use of architecture, mirrors and windows, all of which gives a feeling of being in an intimate, small restaurant while never feeling claustrophobic. The menu is broad offering breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with a la carte appetizers and starters through to fish and meat courses, and dangerously tempting deserts. This wealth of choice includes the timeless Browns classics such as Fish pie and the Browns Burger, and their own version of Eton Mess (with cherries and large chunks of meringue), as well as daily chef’s specials and a fish of the day (whole Plaice with new potatoes when I visited). A wide range of wines, by the glass or bottle, complements the food menu - we found the waitress’ recommendations to be just right. On a midweek evening the restaurant was not full, but with the clever layout and décor it kept a pleasant buzz throughout the evening, the relaxed atmosphere was helped by attentive waiting staff able to respond to questions and offer advice – Browns take service seriously and offer a monthly prize draw for online feedback. Browns doesn't rest on its long-standing reputation, they also look to tempt you in with specials: Valentine’s brunch, lunch or dinner; discount cocktails Sunday to Wednesday; become a ‘Browns Friend’ and receive vouchers by email; or their delicious daily specials. On top of this recent changes to the layout have brought the bar into the main body of the restaurant creating both a ‘new’ dining area in its old location as well as a more central location to sit and have a pre-dinner cocktail or after work drink. Is there anything I would change? No. This is an Oxford institution and has not only stood the test of time but has kept up to date, responded to its guests (the chocolate brownie had only a very brief period off the menu before customer demand saw it reinstated!), and kept a modern, contemporary feel with top notch food and exemplary service. For a family meal, intimate evening or business lunch Browns should be top of your list. John Piper Special Exhibition 11th February to 9th April: To celebrate the opening of the new season in 2012, Blenheim Palace will host its very first art exhibition exhibition in the Long Library - a display of work by the renowned 20th century British artist, John Piper (1903-1992). The exhibition will mainly focus on Piper's depictions of Blenheim Palace but also explore the interlinking strains of his Oxfordshire connections, his writing, his architectural drawings and paintings of other country houses, as well as some of his collaborative work - prints, stained glass, books, ceramics and tapestry - all of which display the exceptional versatility of his creative output.
