The B4 Charity Bike Ride - Paris To Oxford In Aid Of Oxfam. Completed All 12 cyclists, including B4’s Richard Rosser, Keith Simpson, Rob Scotcher and John Kennedy, enjoyed a fantastic experience they will never forget. B4 were fantastically supported by Kieran Lynch of Oxford Event Hire, James 'The Candy Man' White of InTouch CRM, David 'Hill Master' Robertson of Buildbase together with his wife, Jane ‘Legend’ Robertson, Wayne Harris of Ibstock, Nigel Pursall of OrangeStripe Telecommunications with his nephew Dan and mutual friend Stevie Archer. The group arrived in Paris on Friday 1st June by Eurostar following months of training which for some was totally alien. Others, like Dave Robertson, had previously completed the route from London to Paris but, by his own admission, this was a far more rewarding experience. “I did a very similar challenge last year but I must say I enjoyed this trip a lot more. From the organisation side it could not have run smoother. Then the TEAM mates – It was amazing how quickly twelve people can come to terms with the challenge and start to work as a unit to ensure we all achieved – It was great to be a part of it.” The group set off early on Saturday morning, guided by the fantastic Martin and Joe from Passion in Events who organised the event with B4. Nikki and Simon were the support team and Zoe was the team photographer, quickly amassing a library of photos, mainly of various members of the team struggling to make it up the tortuous hills!

Keith, Richard and Rob of In Oxford Magazine

First stop was Evreux, 75 miles from Paris, which the team reached with two hours to spare. After an evening meal it was early to bed before Day Two’s colossal 90 miles to Caen from where the team took to the overnight ferry to Portsmouth. Before boarding, the group had a fantastic meal and the opportunity to reflect on two great days and 165 miles covered. For many it was the first time they had cycled long distances on consecutive days, but without any real aches and pains, it was testament to the hours of training they had all put in that there were no major problems ahead of the last day. As the cyclists set off to board the ferry, although there was an air of satisfaction, most realised the last day would be the hardest, with the 100 mile trek from Portsmouth to Blenheim Palace ahead of them, with heavy rain forecast.

Good weather had been a major plus for the trip, with only light showers on day two to contend with. However, as the group assembled below deck at 6.30am on the final day, the weather, on what was supposed to be a glorious Jubilee Monday, was anything

but welcoming. Before the group had got into their stride, they were confronted with a 100 metre climb out of Portsmouth, an early reminder that this was going to be the toughest day. Breakfast was provided on the roadside shortly after, with the ever present Simon and Nikki ready with a warm smile and the largest bacon sandwiches!

On the road out of Paris towards Evreux

From there on the signs became more familiar with Basingstoke, then Newbury, then Wantage passing by. As the team climbed the final 200 metre plus hill, Oxfordshire was before them and the sun began to shine. Tea was served in Eaton and as the team made its way through Wolvercote, team jester, James White, succumbed to his first and well deserved drink for over a month just outside Woodstock as there was an hour to kill whilst friends and family were still arriving to greet the group at Blenheim. The final mile brought home to the cyclists what they had achieved and it was with relief and a little sadness that the final mile slipped by and Jane lead the team through the Hensington Gates up the drive to Blenheim Palace, a wonderful venue for the climax to this fantastic adventure.

Over one hundred friends and family had gathered to cheer the group home, along with supporters from Oxfam, B4’s preferred charity. The total raised so far for Oxfam is £11,000 with more money to come in. Oxfam’s Oxfordshire Development Manager, Anna Thorne, commented, “£10,000 is enough to build two water tanks and refurbish two classrooms which is an amazing achievement, The team did a great job!

If you would like to make a contribution to the team, you can donate in one of two ways: a) Direct to the team’s Virgin Pages at: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/b4bikeride b) Or by cheque donation made payable to 'Paris to Oxford Bike Ride' – please send your cheques to B4 at The Firs, Headington Hill, Oxford OX3 0BT With thanks from all of us at B4 to the other fantastic riders, all at Passion in Events including Tina Makin, Peter Wood, Simon, Nix, Jo and Martin, Blenheim Palace for hosting our finish, Blueprint Imaging for their fabulous Finish Line banners, Oxfam for their support throughout and Zoe for her support documenting the ride. Thanks also to the support provided by family and friends to keep us going before, during and at the finish line.

Lead Article

Two stalwarts of the Oxford theatre scene have teamed up to present a summer of open-air Shakespeare in stunning settings. Enjoying open-air theatre is an essential part of any summer’s day in Oxford and a tradition amongst residents. Creation Theatre Company will perform Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice on the Rooftop Amphitheatre at Saϊd Business School (next to the train station), while Oxford Shakespeare Company will return to the gardens of Wadham College with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Creation has been producing Shakespeare’s greatest works in Oxford for 16 years, delighting audiences in venues from Oxford Castle to Headington Hill Park. Oxford Shakespeare Company marks its 10th anniversary with a magical new production in the stunning gardens of Wadham College. Both shows are located in the heart of Oxford, easily reached on foot from the centre. Creation’s The Merchant of Venice will take audiences on a voyage to 1930s Italy with live jazz, vintage costume and of course the infamous ‘pound of flesh’. Director Natalie Abrahami (Regent’s Park, Headlong, Young Vic) places Shakespeare’s most controversial and human comedy amid the hustle and bustle of the docks, where cultures collide, money talks and debt is cheap… until it’s time to pay. ‘Time Out’ described Natalie Abrahami’s Pericles for Regent’s Park as “A cheeky, magical and moving adaptation, FOUR STARS”. Performed by a troupe of nine actors and musicians, this production will include live music and songs. Creation’s venue, the Amphitheatre at Saïd, is perched above Oxford’s dreaming spires, perfectly placed under balmy skies and starry nights, and also boasts an “indoor back up” inside the building, so even if the weather doesn’t live up to expectations, the experience will. Oxford Shakespeare Company’s Dream will take place in the imagined world of a group of University undergraduates as they are forced to find themselves and fight for love, as well as survive a night in the ‘wilderness’. Hormones are raging, lovers are arguing, fairies are fighting and Oberon still can’t find his Zen. A superb acting ensemble will perform Shakespeare’s favourite comedy with trade mark original compositions by rising stars Nicholas Lloyd-Webber and James D. Reid (Twelfth Night & The Tempest Time Out’s Critic’s Choice, FOUR STARS). Oxford Shakespeare Company’s venue, the gardens of Wadham College on Parks Road, is the ideal setting for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There is also the opportunity to watch A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Cornbury Park Charlbury - regarded as one of the most stunning private estates in Oxfordshire – on Sunday 1 July at 2.30pm. Both shows open in July and run throughout the summer, with performances on weekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays, including some matinees. The full performance schedules can be found at www.creationtheatre.co.uk and www.osctheatre.org.uk. Tickets are priced £10-23. Tickets for both shows are available from the Creation Theatre Company Box Office on 01865 766266 or online at www.creationtheatre.co.uk

Restaurant Review

Situated on the peaceful Turl Street in Oxford City Centre, as one might guess from the name, is Turl Street Kitchen: A dining establishment with a difference. The Turl Street Kitchen's focus on supporting the local environment and community flows throughout the entire building, from the locally sourced and seasonal ingredients in the kitchen, to the charity gathering point upstairs. On the first floor of Turl Street Kitchen lies The Oxford Hub. The Hub is a social focal point for charitable activity, linking students with their community through social action and volunteering. The Hub's meeting rooms, offices, event space, living room and library are available freely to charity groups, to hire for students and also for non students on a mission to help their community. Back down on the ground floor, we were seated immediately in the grand rustic dining room. The whole area being decorated with a pale, farmhouse look in white and olive green lends to a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. The quiet bustle of the open kitchen in the distance, the high Victorian ceilings with contemporary low-hanging lamps, to the stunning origami artwork by Lisa Curtis – The Turl Street Kitchen is unique in not only its kind-hearted vocation. After presentation with a thin slip of paper for a menu, the staff explained that because of the focus on local ingredients, the menu changes twice daily depending on what’s available. Menus are available on their website or twitter shortly before mealtimes. Out of today's options, all of which sounded delectable, I opted for a starter of asparagus soup with freshly baked bread, and a Burford cheese & onion quiche for the main course. When they write 'freshly baked', they really do mean it. I smelt it before it even arrived from the kitchen. The generous helping of soup was perfect – the asparagus was creamy and rich, without being over-powering or too filling as can easily happen with soup for starters. The cheese & onion quiche was hands-down the tastiest quiche I've ever had the pleasure of eating. It was a taste explosion of smoky Burford cheese with fresh onions in a light and soft pastry. The food here really cannot be faulted in any aspect. In terms of drinks, Turl Street Kitchen offers a wide variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages – from rose lemonade and independent colas to fresh juices and a well chosen selection of wines. As with the food, the drinks focus on independent and British producers, such as the local Cotswold lagers. And as for desserts – you need to ask a waiter for that day's list – I chose fresh English strawberries and cream, while my friend went for a home-baked doughnut with custard filling and a pot of blueberry compote. Both desserts were, again, faultless. And because the food had been so fresh and nutritious we weren't left close to bursting by the end of it, rather perfectly sated. The bar stays open until midnight weekdays and past 1am on Fridays and Saturdays and can become quite lively on busy nights. They also play host to regular live music events and more. Turl Street Kitchen really is bringing something new to Oxford's dining scene, and cannot be recommended enough. The kitchen opens at 5.30pm, and when we arrived at 6.30pm the dining area had but a few people in it. By 7pm it was filling up quite a bit though so I do suggest going a little earlier. Even so, the waiting staff were attentive, friendly, and very helpful all evening. I will undoubtedly be returning there soon. 16 Turl St, Oxford OX1 3DH Tel: 01865 264171

Restaurant Review

Rice Box Located perfectly in amongst the hustle and bustle of Cowley Road, Rice Box is the place to go to if you want quick service, delicious food and a welcoming smile. We tried Rice Box on a very rainy day and were delighted to find such a welcome retreat from the weather. Rice Box has a wide selection of dishes, including Chinese, Malaysian, Japanese and Thai. But it doesn’t end there: they also have a Specials menu, Chef’s Specials, and Seasonal Specials next to the normal menu (which is already big and also includes lots of Vegetarian options). At Rice Box, there is definitely a dish for everyone! The wide choice made deciding a bit difficult, but I enjoyed the process. All tastes seem to be catered for with dishes you wouldn’t usually find in most Chinese Restaurants. Aria, our waitress, provided perfectly friendly and quick service and food seemed to fly out of the kitchen. The speed from ordering to receiving your food was super fast, you’d be wrong for thinking this may impact on the quality of the dishes served. Everything had such a great smell and was visually very appealing. How the team of chefs coped with a packed restaurant is nothing short of a miracle. We had Special fried rice, House Special Chow Mein, Roast Duck With Cashew Nuts, Spring Rolls and two Cokes; all of which were just perfect. The location of the Rice Box is ideal if you are looking for somewhere to eat whilst shopping on Cowley Road and is a short walk from the centre of town. Steven and I were eating just before going to see a gig later that evening. Rice Box is really good value for money, with healthy and delicious food served seven days a week (including bank holidays) from 12 noon to 12 midnight. You can enjoy the food at the restaurant, as a takeaway or home delivery. If it has to be a super fast takeaway, try one of the box meals – they even come with a free soft drink! After our meal, we were well prepared for a good evening out and, the weather aside, our Rice Box experience was great, everything you would want from a local Chinese. 178 Cowley Road, Oxford OX4 1UE Tel: 01865 202 138 www.riceboxrestaurant.co.uk
