Oxford Castle Continuing to make history
Written by Richard Rosser 13th January 2015
Doesn’t time fly? It only seems like yesterday that the sun was beating down on Oxford Castle Quarter as it held its breath in anticipation of the royal opening by Her Majesty the Queen. That was nearly ten years ago, but Oxford Castle Quarter continues to make history, as Operations Manager, Sam Pace, explains. “We are very much looking forward to celebrating our 10th birthday in May and this milestone gives us the perfect excuse to invite the Oxfordshire public to reacquaint themselves with Oxford Castle Quarter. “Over the last decade, the site has seen a plethora of events staged here, from Open Air Theatre to art exhibitions, Christmas Markets and even an ice rink and 2015 will see a comprehensive range of events which will provide something for everyone. What better way to provide the local community and visitors to Oxford with a great excuse to get to know this wonderful site which represents a real part of Oxford’s history, having historically been the real hub of Oxford.” Sam has been in post at Oxford Castle Quarter for eighteen months and in that period she has assessed how the site fits into the city and what place it has in the local community, as she explains further. “I have also been conducting lots of market research, looking at why people visit, what they are expecting and whether or not we are we managing their expectations. “It’s important to embrace the culture and heritage of the site and we want to give everyone access to the site on a physical level with all these wonderful buildings around us but also on a more intellectual level by starting to put out the human stories and social history of Oxford Castle Quarter - there is quite a lot to be told with some really fascinating stories. “The next three years will be very exciting. We have a blank canvas in terms of the site – it can be so many things and it can have lots of different faces, as it has already proved, and have a broad appeal. We will have five different open air productions taking place this year under the umbrella of The Oxford Shakespeare Festival and O3 Gallery exhibitions will be spilling out of the gallery into the site.” With a new identity being launched shortly with a brand new strapline ‘Oxford Castle Quarter, discover where Oxford began’ (replacing the Eat, Drink, Enjoy strapline, cementing the shift to more of a cultural focus) 2015 and beyond promises to be a very exciting period for Oxford Castle Quarter, and with work on the Westgate starting, even more buoyant times can be seen on the horizon as this development shifts some of the focus towards the West End, as Sam concludes. “There is no doubt that The Westgate work will cause some disruption, but the long term vision is to provide more of a link between the West End and the City, and we are right in the middle which will be great for us.” The original aim of developer Trevor Osborne when he decided to breathe life into Oxford Castle Quarter was to make the site open to the public and benefit the city. For one thousand years it was either trying to keep people out (as a castle) or keep them in (as a prison). It now strives to welcome us all.

This year marks many important anniversaries in relation to Sir Winston Churchill, and as his birthplace and ancestral home, we are honouring his life and legacy with a whole host of experiences for visitors to enjoy. From the 14th February the Palace and Formal Gardens will re-open for the 2015 season, and inside the Palace a reinvigorated permanent exhibition will open, taking visitors on the journey of Sir Winston Churchill’s life, from his birth at Blenheim Palace, featuring the many accolades he achieved, the proposal to his wife Clementine and his final days. The exhibition will be brought to life with new photographs, extracts from his diaries, artefacts and a number of other never-before-seen elements, giving visitors a real sense of the man known as our ‘Greatest Briton’. Another highlight of this year will be the opening of a memorial garden in mid-June. The garden, designed by Kim Wilkie, will give visitors the chance to follow the path of Churchill’s incredible life, with milestones incorporated into the walkway and an abundance of carefully selected plants and flowers surrounding it. A dedicated ‘Walk in Churchill’s Footsteps’ trail will be available for visitors to take, leading you through the Palace, Park and Formal Gardens to discover Churchill’s favourite and most significant locations. Buggy tours will be in operation, taking you to the gate of the Blenheim Palace Estate nearest to the neighbouring village of Bladon, where a short walk leads you to the churchyard of St Martin’s, where Churchill and his family are laid to rest. Free tours will also be running on a weekly basis, enriching your visit and giving you a deeper insight into Churchill’s connections with Blenheim Palace and how he spent his time here, and two specialist themed talks and tours will be on offer on selected dates. These specialist talks and tours allow you to delve deeper into Churchill’s history, with one exploring his relationships with the family living at Blenheim Palace, and the other focussing on WWII and the involvement of Churchill, Blenheim Palace and the Marlborough family. A special Afternoon Tea will be on offer throughout the Valentines period focussing on Churchill’s loving relationship with his wife Clementine, and an exclusive dining experience will take place in June with an appearance from a Churchill character bringing his history to life, and a private tasting of his favourite cigars and ports. Our 2015 calendar is packed full of exciting events, exhibitions and specialist tours with something for everyone to enjoy. With all of this and so much more on offer throughout the year, there has never been a better time to visit Blenheim Palace. Buy one day, get 12 months free, so you can keep returning to explore all we have to offer. They encompass an enormous range of styles, many musically complex or technically fiendish, and together are a true test of the organist’s skill. Daniel Hyde is Informator Choristarum, Organist and Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford and a regular accompanist to the BBC Singers on Radio 3. Daniel made his solo BBC Proms debut in 2010 performing Bach at the Royal Albert Hall, and tonight we join him halfway through an epic survey of Bach's complete organ works in weekly recitals throughout the academic year. English Renaissance composer John Dowland was one of the finest lutenists of his time, whose beguiling compositions for the lute have endured throughout the centuries. Art Article:
Modern Art Oxford Modern Art Oxford is a leading UK contemporary art space with an international reputation for inspirational and innovative programmes. The gallery is located in central Oxford and all our exhibitions and the majority of our events are completely free of charge. The gallery prides itself as being one of the UK’s most exciting and influential contemporary art spaces and we aim to make contemporary art accessible and engaging to the widest audience through free and exciting workshops, free film screenings and free weekly exhibition tours with curators. Modern Art Oxford aims to celebrate the relevance of contemporary visual culture to society today. Our agenda is shaped by a belief in dialogue between contemporary art and ideas, and seek to create new relationships between artists and audiences at the beginning of the 21st century. Up until the first week of March you will still have a chance to see a unique exhibition celebrating two great artists: William Morris and Andy Warhol. In Love is Enough, Turner-prize winning artist Jeremy Deller unites the work of the iconic artists, bringing rarely seen epic works from public and private collections across the UK and the USA. In March, Modern Art Oxford will present the first European solo show for Mexican born artist Débora Delmar whose work examines ways in which the current commodity-obsessed culture we live in structures our every day life and routine. The gallery will be filled with brand-new site-specific installations and sculptures inspired by her residency in Oxford. Alongside Delmar, the gallery will reprise their successful Test Run programme, this year looking at Performance in Public. For two months, Modern Art Oxford will present live performances, talks, workshops and a series of films exploring ideas of physical, digital and conceptual spaces. Furthermore, the gallery will play host to another female solo exhibition, with American artist Lynn Hershman Leeson. The first major survey of her work, this landmark show will bring together a range of media including installation, moving image, interactive work and collage each questioning the relationship between humans and technology. In the autumn, Modern Art Oxford will exhibit American artist Josh Kline in his first European solo show. Through his use of multi-media installations, Kline will explore a world dominated by technology and corporate culture. Alongside this fantastic array of exhibitions, there is also the opportunity to relax in the café space, browse the unique gifts in the shop, and participate in the vibrant events programmes which includes free tours and talks, free film screenings and contemporary music concerts. For formal dinners, canapé receptions, film screenings and parties, the gallery also offers a contemporary, fresh and flexible environment for an event in the heart of the city centre with six architecturally striking exhibition spaces. 30 Pembroke Street, Oxford OX1 1BP Tel: 01865 722733 Web: www.modernartoxford.org.uk www.inoxford.com

Accommodation Review:
Iffley Blue & Hawkwell House
Reviewed by Richard Rosser 16th January 2015
After a busy Christmas, getting back to the daily routine in a bleak January can be a little soul destroying so to have a treat to look forward to is certainly a welcome distraction. We were booked to stay at Hawkwell House Hotel on a Friday so could not only look forward to a nice meal in the fabulous Iffley Blue, but we also knew the pressure was off to get up early! We checked in around 7.30pm and literally dropped our bags in the room and turned around for dinner at 8pm. Our room had been recently refurbished as part of an overall hotel refurbishment and was tastefully decorated as well as being very generous in size. We also had skylights over the bed and the bath which enabled stargazing at night and a real connection with the location, almost a forest feel, as nearby tree branches swayed above. The restaurant, Iffley Blue, has also been impressively refurbished with four impressive pyramid style skylights in each corner of the restaurant providing that connection, once again, with the outside world. Soft colours blend with the softly lit room and an open clay oven where pizzas are baked in full view of the guests. Our meal was first class starting with the sumptuous fish board followed by the Chicken, spinach and ginger curry for me, and Pot-roast lamb shank for Tina. The fish board comprised Severn & Wye smoked salmon, pickled samphire, shell on prawns, lightly spiced thousand island mayonnaise, crab meat risotto balls and salt & pepper monkfish collops (I could have eaten a whole board of these – amazing!). My curry was delicious, served in a typical Indian restaurant style silver bowl, accompanied by basmati rice, papadoms and mango and red onion chutney which was incredibly tasty – the whole meal was. Tina’s lamb shank looked like a feast for two but she conquered it and commented how succulent the lamb was, accompanied by bubble and squeak and braised red cabbage with a honey and red wine glaze. We had a bottle of perfectly chilled Macon Lugny with the meal and although we were unable to fit in dessert, my request for a grapefruit was wonderfully accommodated as a plate of red grapefruit adorned with berries and strawberries was presented to me. This attention to detail is typical of the staff, led by Restaurant Manager Lara Avincola and the attitude and professionalism of the staff throughout the hotel during our stay was excellent. Aside from high quality accommodation, a great restaurant and superb conference facilities, Hawkwell is also a first class wedding venue and is less than two miles from the City Centre with more than ample parking. Iffley Village, where the hotel is located, is also quaint and peaceful so you get tranquillity plus proximity to the City – the best of both worlds. Restaurant Review:
Café Aloha
Reviewed by Rebecca Kashti 9th January 2015
We had lunch on Friday January 9th at 12pm. The café is situated in the Botley precinct which has plenty of free parking (up to 3 hours) in the attached car park. The café itself looks very welcoming from the outside. The décor is simple, in the good sense of the word. The café has a lovely, friendly atmosphere. It is relaxed and welcoming and clearly provides a welcome refuge for workers at lunchtime and shoppers alike. The staff made a real effort to look after customers and deliver timely service – something lunchtime patrons need… - including even the customer sitting on a table outside who wanted a coffee. The waitress served him immediately in what was a busy lunchtime service. He was not forgotten! The tables are well spaced which adds to the atmosphere of the café – there is a real buzz about the lunchtime service – a mixture of young and old, office workers and shoppers, along with a party of eight there to celebrate. The waitress was friendly and warm. She recommended the ‘specials’ written on the blackboard, and was knowledgeable when asked about a particular dish on the specials. She knew the menu well and was able to recommend dishes to us. The café also has a tapas special menu which looked great. The price of drinks seemed perfectly reasonable. Our drinks came very quickly. The soda and lime (£2.20), and sparkling water (£1.95) were served with plenty of ice and a slice of lime and lemon respectively. For our main course we ordered a pizza capricciosa (£12.00) and Aloha Special pasta (£13.95). With it, we ordered a mixed salad as a side dish (£2.90). The pizza was large, thin and well baked, with a good amount of toppings which included tomato, mozzarella, ham, artichokes, pepperoni and black olives. The pasta was linguini cooked al dente in a creamy and well-seasoned sauce. It came with plenty of pancetta, parmesan and rocket sprinkled on the top, and did not need any further seasoning. We both cleaned our plates which, once you have a chance to sample the fabulous pizzas at the café, was a thorough endorsement of the quality! The salad bowl was just the right amount for two to share, and had a good mix of vegetable – cherry tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber and red onion with tasty, but not dominating, vinaigrette. All dishes were well presented and tasted delicious. The portion sizes were good and although we did not opt for a desert, the menu choice was appetising. Two strong, hot and tasty espresso coffees (£1.60) arrived almost immediately upon ordering. A very pleasant experience all around – the location, the space, the staff and most of all, the food. Highly recommended. 11 The Square, Botley, Oxfordshire OX2 9LH Tel: 01865 792696 Web: www.cafealoha.co.uk www.inoxford.com
