Acanthus Restaurant at MacDonald Randolph Hotel

Well it’s been over a year in the making but it’s been worth the wait. The fabulous new Acanthus Restaurant is now open for all to enjoy and we couldn’t fail to do just that when we visited just after the finishing touches had been put to this stunning restaurant in the heart of Oxford. Following last year’s fire, MacDonald Randolph Hotel has been working around the inconvenience of scaffolding, road barriers, a covered entrance and more. General Manager Michael Grange and his team have worked tirelessly to keep the hotel firing on all cylinders, no mean feat when you consider this is a five star hotel, Oxford’s only one, with five star guests expecting five star treatment. There are sure to have been a few bumps and bruises along the way but at the end of what must have been a gruelling road for the team, the new Acanthus Restaurant has been born and it should go down a storm. The interior is strong and confident, with huge windows overlooking the Ashmolean Museum and also a new seating area including a Chef’s Table looking into the industrious kitchen. It’s a brand spanking new kitchen too, with chefs moving from station to station with a spring in every step….no doubt a new kitchen with the latest gizmos must be like Christmas every day to the kitchen brigade! The food is stunning too (see below) so make sure you visit soon. Acanthus has taken the contemporary yet classic British cuisine route with the highest quality ingredients including superb Scottish beef, British lamb and pork. Storms, War and Shipwrecks: Treasures from the Sicilian Seas Tuesday 21st June 2016: Storms, War and Shipwrecks tells the extraordinary story of the island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean through the discoveries made by underwater archaeologists. For 2500 years, Sicily was the place where great ancient civilizations met and fought. Its rich and varied island culture has been marked by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. This major summer exhibition explores the roots of this multicultural heritage with over 200 spectacular and unusual objects rescued from the bottom of the sea. From bronze battering rams once mounted on the prows of Roman warships to the marble pieces of a Byzantine ‘flat-pack’ church; from intrepid prehistoric traders to the enlightened rule of the Norman kings, the exhibition illuminates the movement of peoples, goods and ideas. The treasures on show in Storms, War and Shipwrecks have been uncovered over the last sixty years since the advent of SCUBA diving equipment which made possible sustained underwater exploration. While some of the objects are chance finds pulled up by local fishermen, most are from shipwrecks excavated by archaeological divers. Visitors to the exhibition will be taken on a journey through Sicily’s fascinating history. This story will be told exclusively through spectacular finds from the sea, because it is the sea which has always been the lifeblood of the island’s unique and diverse culture. Didcot Railway Centre

In the heart of Didcot, famous for its train station and industrialised power station lies a celebration of the golden age in train travel the Didcot Railway Centre. 20 acres of awe inspiring mechanics gleaming with over five generations of history. Entering through the modern Didcot Parkway station I use a vintage rotary telephone alerting my arrival, instantly igniting my love for forgotten classics. I proceed to be warmly welcomed by Anne, a volunteer for the centre who is passionate and knowledgeable about the trains which she calls her ‘babies’. The centre is an incredible contrast of man-made constructions including locomotives, carriages, wagons and woodland surrounding a picnic area where visitors snack on packed lunches watching trains surge past. Left to wander blissfully anywhere and everywhere, visitors get to access all areas to make their visit truly unforgettable. Notable sights along the journey include the only working coal stage in the UK; where coal is stored before being gravity fed into waiting empty tenders, the original 1932 built engine shed housing locomotives, some of which date back to the 19th century, and the ‘Locomotive Workshops’ where you can climb into the caboose and imagine being a conductor for the afternoon. Starting your personal tour experience at the turntable, you can leisurely stroll and visit the main demonstration line. On steam days you can board the working train and travel along one of the centre's running lines, and make your way to the GWR museum and archive to view antique models, toy trains, old uniforms, signals, posters and pictures. Continue on to the carriage shed housing over 40 carriages and admire the ornate paintings on older carriages. End your journey around this magnificent centre at the refreshment room serving delicious food before heading to the bookstall and gift shop for delightful mementos of your trip to the centre. Personally, I came to the Railway Centre to further my curiosity about how far trains have progressed throughout history. The contrast as you leave the modern trains behind and dive head first into steam built engines is engaging and fascinating. The centre is entertaining for children, teenagers and adults with plenty to do for all. I will be returning to the centre to enjoy their many events such as the Gala’s, Heritage Diesel Days, Teddy Bears’ Picnic and the Steam Days. The calendar for 2015 is bursting with fantastic days out at the Didcot Railway Centre, so head to Didcot and start your own experience. Seminar in Ethnomusicology and Sound Studies with Ellen Waterman Thursday 5th May: Wilderness isn’t What It Used to Be: The ecology of experimental music performance in Canada. In the 20th century, Canada was defined by tropes of nature and place, most famously the “idea of north” that was first expressed in experimental music in Glenn Gould’s famous 1969 radio collage of the same name, and made manifest in R. Murray Schafer’s massive Patria series of environmental music theatre works (1965 – ), several of which are performed in “wilderness” locations. These days, experimental music in Canada is more likely to riff on contemporary issues such as multiculturalism, neocolonialism, and indigeneity. Athol Whitmore ‘Eternal Child’ 7th - 28th May Sarah Wiseman Gallery, 40-41 South Parade, Summertown, Oxford, OX2 7JL Sarah Wiseman Gallery is proud to present Athol Whitmore’s solo exhibition ‘Eternal Child’, his second at the gallery. Athol has further developed his multi-disciplinary approach to art and continues his journey through the motifs of childhood. Athol has a magpie approach to his artistic practice, seeking out vintage curios and imagery to spark a nostalgic response in the viewer. He presents a rose-tinted, idealized view of a childhood gone by, with a ‘Famous Five’ sense of freedom and adventure, provoking thoughts on how precious childhood is. In recent works, Athol has been exploring the Victorian technique of painting on glass, trapping the image behind a new glossy surface. There is a simple decorative quality to the technique but when placed in the context of Athol’s work, with the motif slightly removed from us and more challenging for the viewer to grasp, it metaphorically embodies his thoughts on childhood. Visitors can expect to see a highly eclectic body of work as Athol lets his imagination take the reins with art works made from Victorian mirrors, vintage chairs and plates, collages of vintage stamps or letters, wherever he can see potential to create an art work in his distinctive pop-art aesthetic. Discarded items are transformed them into powerful, glossy art works inviting us to reconnect with the potential of play and our own inner child. Athol Whitmore lives and works in Oxford and has completed his first major public art work this year for the Oxford Children’s Hospital, ‘Multitude of Stories’- an installation using toy cars. Sarah Wiseman Gallery is Oxford’s largest independent gallery space. World Record set at the iconic Reading Half Marathon The 33rd Reading Half Marathon saw more than 12,000 runners take on the prestigious race, with many surpassing their personal best race times as well as raising thousands of pounds for charitable causes and for the first time in the race’s history, a Guinness World Record was set. There was an incredible atmosphere at the start line in Green Park, alive with energy and an abundance of colour as Olympic 400m sprinter Iwan Thomas MBE, Sir John Madejski and Reading Mayor Sarah Jane Hacker set runners on their way. This continued across the town with roaring spectators lining the pavements for the runners throughout the 13.1 mile route. Thousands more filled the race village and the Madejski Stadium to join in the celebrations that erupted around the finish line. Scott Forbes, a BA Pilot from Wokingham, ran the whole race in a blue three piece suit in a time of 1.18.13 breaking the Guinness World Record for the 'Fastest Half Marathon in a Suit'. Scott commented: “I’m absolutely ecstatic that I’ve managed to beat the world record, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I was so hot and it felt like I was running through mud - I’m just glad it’s over and it was all worth it!” Judith Manson, Race Director, describes the event as a huge success: “A big congratulations to all the participants that took part in the race on this beautifully sunny Sunday. Reading has once again played host to a fantastic event with so many dedicated runners crossing the finish line as first timers, charity fundraisers or seasoned elites – and even a world record holder! Oxford Cancer Researcher preparing for her first ever Triathlon at Blenheim Palace Oxford resident Rachael Nimmo is pushing herself to the limit as she prepares to take part in the Blenheim Palace Triathlon on Saturday 4 June. The 37 year-old is raising funds for blood cancer charity Bloodwise, after she was awarded a grant for her research into childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Rachael, who works at the Cancer Institute at University College London (UCL), was recently awarded a research grant from Bloodwise to determine the precise genetic signature of a patient’s leukaemia and develop personalised drugs to target the cancer. Rachael said: “The treatments for these children are still very harsh and can have damaging long-term effects. We are trying to develop personalised drugs that can treat the patient in a more targeted way, that is more effective and less damaging to the rest of the body. “I was drawn to enter the event as Bloodwise is the official sponsor and charity partner. I have a strong interest in cancer research through both my job and also personally as I have many family members who have been affected by the disease.” Rachael adds. Rachael, who has participated in team sports since childhood, currently plays for Headington Ladies FC. She adds: “I have always liked the idea of doing a triathlon and it involves three sports that I have, at one point in my life, done on a regular basis. The Trout Reviewed by Lucy Howard 12th March

This charming pub/restaurant, nestled in the pretty village of Wolvercote on the banks of the Thames, dates from the 17th century, and its cosy interiors of roaring log fires and wooden-beamed ceilings are said to have attracted illustrious visitors from King Henry II to Lewis Carroll. It also has a beautiful location: regal peacocks strut on the terrace, hot air balloons come in to land on Port Meadow, and the dreaming spires of Oxford can be glimpsed in the distance. The Trout is a perfect spot for a drink, a light bite or a leisurely weekend meal. The menu has a great range of fresh, seasonal dishes, from daily specials to delicious pub classics, which are presented beautifully and delivered by great service. We nibbled on a complimentary on-arrival taster of home-baked vegetable crisps, whilst we looked at the menu, took in the beautiful views over the river and sipped on a refreshing glass of white wine and a pint of local beer. We then enjoyed a mouth-watering crayfish and crab pot with Devon crab mayonnaise, a generous portion of salt and pepper squid with aioli, and deep-fried Somerset brie with an apricot and cumin chutney for starters. Following this, the slow-cooked pork belly with pancetta and thyme mash and an English cider and mustard sauce, perfectly partnered with seared scallops, was declared one of the “best meals ever” by my meat-loving dad, while the vegetarians in the party were also well catered for: the battered halloumi with chunky chips and minted pea puree, and the colourful wholefood salad with whiter-thanwhite fresh goat's curd, also made more than the grade. After all that, we were pretty full and very satisfied, but couldn't resist dessert. We opted for the house sharer, so we could try a selection from the dessert menu - including an irresistible gooey warm chocolate brownie, a zesty lemon tart, a delicate crème brûlée, a vanilla ice cream cookie sandwich and some fresh strawberries - all mouth-wateringly good, as expected! The drinks list is also fantastic, with a range of interesting wines and beers, showcasing both local and international options, as well as fruity cocktails. The Trout ticks every box, from its food to its setting to its staff, and it has to be one of the best places to eat in Oxfordshire. I can't recommend it highly enough!

We were starving and those Sunday lunches looked fantastic! However, spoiler alert – we were booked in for dinner, and so had to endure the sight of steaming plates passing by our noses whilst we enjoyed a few drinks in the bar. Not that that was too much of a hardship, with 4 real ales, a roaring log fire, and the buzz of conversation filling the Old Pub….. Fast forward to later that evening, when we sat down to peruse the Wine List in the restaurant area. I’d already had a chat with Mark (the proprietor) earlier in the day - he takes great pride in putting together an imaginative selection, and had highly recommended the Argentinian Torrontes, listed as having ‘aromas of lemon meringue pie, peach, melon, and an intriguing whiff of Turkish Delight’. I’m not sure I’d have picked a white wine based on that description alone, but it was an absolute joy – my partner voted it one of the best wines she’d tried in a long time….and she does try quite a few! We kicked off with a Sharing Platter. There are nine separate items, themed around Meat, Fish, and Garden (i.e. Vegetarian), so you can mix & match your own combination – we paired Beef carpaccio with Prawn toast and Tempura courgettes, a somewhat eclectic mix, but it tickled our taste buds nicely in preparation for the main course. I was tempted by the Gin-cured Farmoor Trout (is that where the saying ‘Drunk as a fish’ comes from?!), but it being a Sunday evening and having already served 150 covers at Sunday lunch, some dishes were unavailable – a good thing in my book, as it means that everything is freshly-prepared. So, it was the Pork belly for me, accompanied by a ‘Pig’s Head Fritter’, which prompted some lively debate at our table as to what this entailed, my partner having envisaged a shrunken head at the side of the plate. It turned out to be one of Mark’s witticisms, or ‘English with an eclectic twist’ as he likes to call it; i.e. Pork crackling made out of pigs ears. Having diverged over the porcine cranium, we were unanimous in our choice of dessert – the Valrhona Chocolate & Guinness Cake, with salted Caramel ice-cream. This was one of those arms-around-your-dish moments, definitely not a ‘Sharing Platter’ occasion! I’ll leave the last words here to Mark - "We don't do clichés - we like to put good food and good drink in people's mouths…that’s it!"

The Cherwell Boathouse

Time stands still in the twilight of an April evening as we snake through North Oxford, heading towards the Cherwell Boathouse. The streets are deserted with the fee paying school community being en vacances and very probably entre la neige and le ciel. Tucked into the armpit of the Dragon School is a tiny little lane leading to arguably the city’s best restaurant, or certainly one of the most famous and definitely one of only a very few establishments competing in the arena of ‘fine dining’. The Cherwell Boathouse was founded in 1904 by a man called Thomas Tims. He built a punt hire business, a large house and he had a boat building yard at Long Isis. Today the Boathouse is thriving with the main restaurant, several event spaces, plenty of punts to hire, and a seasonal Teahut bar open from mid-April to mid-September offering a lower price point and more immediate and accessible fayre for those who have come to punt and not necessarily to dine. We park on Chadlington Road and the silence of the neighbourhood shatters upon opening the restaurant door, as if we have stumbled upon a secret club. On an ignominious Wednesday evening the place is buzzing with full tables and urgent laughter and a sense that we are late to the party. The atmosphere works and creates the mood - nobody wants a silent restaurant. Without thinking very hard we find ourselves ordering from the Spring Menu which offers 2 courses for £22 and 3 courses for £27.75. We were the last table to order and my starter of red pepper and plum tomato mousse disappears in seconds. My friend enjoyed the cornish crab and chive risotto, using adjectives like ‘delicate’ and ‘fragrant’ with a sincerity that I had to admire. We order the beef and the cod as main courses. The beef is locally reared and that is compelling when ordering, geographic provenance being a modern trend. The shiitake mushroom and Madeira jus add a sweet glaze to the proceedings - the portions are generous and this is a winner. The pan fried fillet of cod is cooked to perfection. Puddings are essential and the bitter chocolate tart complements the evening as a round of ‘Happy Birthday to you’ comes from across the room. Gilded North Oxford sleeps serene as we leave, oblivious to the passing of yet another successful, lovely evening at the Cherwell Boathouse.
