‘Photography these days is such a diverse medium, with many artists using it in lots of different ways’, says gallery director Sarah Wiseman. ‘We’re excited to be taking this opportunity to explore those techniques with this exhibition’.

Brasserie Blanc

Located in trendy Jericho a short walk from the centre of town, Brasserie Blanc, as it was renamed in 2006, is a firm favourite for locals, visitors, and Raymond Blanc himself. The restaurant serves traditional and modern French food from a seasonal menu in a light and contemporary environment.

Lead Article:

Grantham House: A unique development in popular Jericho

Jericho is now one of the most popular areas of the city with a range of excellent restaurants, cafés and pubs. Since February 2011, it has been designated a conservation area meaning the City Council has additional powers to protect buildings and landscape against alteration, development and demolition. The refurbishment of Grantham House was a unique opportunity to rejuvenate the recently vacated sheltered housing block in the heart of Jericho and provide 29 residential units in an area where accommodation is much needed. It has been greatly exciting to be involved with this development in the ‘ultimate’ location in Oxford: a short walk from the city centre’s restaurants, bars, and theatres and adjacent to the new academic hub, the 10 acre Radcliffe Observatory Quarter. The bus station is close by and the train station is an easy five minute cycle ride away, making it an excellent location for commuters to London and beyond. At the time of going to press, and with a build completion date of October, we have just one 2-bedroom apartment and three 3-bedroom penthouses available for sale. Decorum Interiors, the furnishing division of Finders Keepers, will be furnishing the remaining 2-bedroom low-energy, luxury apartment with three different ranges to show both investors and incoming homeowners the variety of style and designs available. This ‘show home’ apartment could be available with the furniture (by negotiation). It is a fantastic 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom ground floor apartment with a small, private rear garden. Available at £730,000, Ben Procter, Deputy Office Manager of our North Oxford office, says: “This property will let at around £2,000 per calendar month. It’s absolutely perfect both in style and location for short stay letting, with the Blavatnik School of Government just 250 metres away. Equally, these apartments could easily meet the demand for corporate tenants who are looking for conveniently located, non-hotel accommodation for their employees.” In addition, the three large penthouse apartments are available. Both have 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms with large outdoor deck areas offering spectacular views over the roof tops of Jericho. These plots are available from £1.2 to £1.3 million and we envisage marketing these stunning apartments for rent at around £3,500 per calendar month. With more than 85% already sold, this development has proved very popular with both homeowners and investors. Finders Keepers Inspired Investment’s Frank Webster says: “Well over £10 million has now been invested. This development is a really remarkable and exclusive opportunity for investors and will provide a supply of particularly desirable apartments to meet the demand to rent good quality property in this prime location.” Many of the 1- and 2-bedroom apartments will be available to rent from October, and our letting team is taking enquiries now. If you would like to view the penthouse apartments before our October open morning, email grantham@finderskeepers.co.uk or call 01865 311011.

The knowledge - How to rebuild our world from scratch

Thursday 4th September: Maybe an asteroid hit Earth. Perhaps a nuclear war reduced our cities to radioactive rubble. Or avian flu killed most of the population. Whatever the cause, the world as we know it has ended and now the survivors must start again. But how do we set about rebuilding our world from scratch? Join Astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell in a lively and informative discussion about how we’ve become disconnected from the basic skills on which our lives and our world depend. Venue: Unicorn Theatre, Abingdon Time: 7.30pm Tickets: £8/£5

Defeating dementia

Friday 12th September: We have ideas about how dementia could be tackled in terms of management and treatment: including better drug delivery to the brain, improving early detection methods and providing an environment in which dementia patients can live safely and at relative peace. But there are still more questions than answers in terms of the speed of research, care provision and the ethical debate around early diagnosis. Join experts from the Medical Research Council and Oxford Dementia and Ageing Research (OxDARE) in an open and enlightening discussion on how we can defeat dementia: or at least manage it in light of new early detection methods. Defeating Dementia will be hosted by writer and broadcaster Quentin Cooper. Venue: Mathematical Institute, Oxford Time: 7-9pm Tickets: £8/£5 To book go to our website www.scienceoxford.com/live

Theatre Article:

Stagecoach Theatre Arts Oxford ANNUAL SHOWCASE PERFORMANCE SUMMER 2014

Reviewed by Nicky Goodwin

On 31st July I arrived at The Theatre in Headington to see this year's

production from Stagecoach Oxford.

I had eagerly awaited this performance as the show was 'FAME'- a series I had avidly watched while growing up, and having seen previous productions from Stagecoach Oxford I was expecting a high standard. I was not disappointed. The show opens with the whole cast number 'PA' where everyone is hoping they have made the grade for the Performing Arts course. The teachers, ably played by Francesca Burrell, Ben Ashton, Ella-Rose Thomas and the charismatic Tats Nyazika, then stress to the students that PA is no easy ride and few have made it on to the course. Those who have made it are under no illusions of how difficult it is going to be, eloquently expressed in the rousing 'Hard Work'. We then have some insight into the lives of a few of the students and their journey until graduation. Natalie Mitson was outstanding as the sweet natured and infatuated 'Serena', while Sarah Mercieca provided a brilliantly contrasting performance as the ill fated 'Carmen'. I sympathised with Scarlett O'Shea as the ever hungry 'Mable' and was swept away by the graceful dance led by dance captain Melissa Fry and Emily Smith as 'Iris'. The large cast was used to great effect, giving everyone a chance to shine, and the live music enhanced the overall show. A performance of this standard is a team effort and congratulations go not only to the cast, but to the director Ashley Turner, choreographer Alice Chilver, and Musical Director Jemma Harris. From beginning to end the show was a festival of song and dance, and my only complaint is that I now have to wait a year until the next production!

September at Blenheim Palace With the busy summer holidays coming to a close, take some time to fully appreciate the Parkland and stunning Formal Gardens here at Blenheim Palace. Concert Season Preview:

Music At Oxford

International Concert Season 2014-15 Music at Oxford promises a concert season full of internationally renowned orchestras, choirs and recitalists, hosted in some of the world’s most historic and intimate venues. Experience a symphony orchestra up-close in the magnificent surroundings of Sir Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, or hear a solo recital in the Holywell Music Room, Europe’s oldest purpose-built concert hall. An evening of Schubert song at the Sheldonian kick-starts both Music at Oxford’s 31st season and Oxford Lieder Festival’s three-week ‘Schubert Project’. The distinguished cast of singers – including Sarah Connolly, James Gilchrist and John Mark Ainsley – make this unique all-Schubert programme a must-see event. New works abound, with specially commissioned choral music performed by The Choir of Merton College, the Oxford Bach Choir, and compositions by winners of the NCEM (National Centre for Early Music) Young Composers Award 2014 performed by The Tallis Scholars. The Oxford première of Jonathan Dove’s For an Unknown Soldier marks the centenary of the First World War. Christ Church Cathedral Choir also commemorates this landmark anniversary with a programme of poignant settings of poetry from the Great War. Celebrated performers include dynamic pianist Joanna MacGregor, cellist Natalie Clein performing Bach’s complete Cello Suites over two evenings, and British star countertenor Iestyn Davies who appears with emerging period instrument ensemble Arcangelo. The line-up is alive with world-class orchestras including the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra which makes its Oxford debut with fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout and the English Chamber Orchestra, directed from the keyboard by the master of Mozart, Howard Shelley. The season ends on a high with Andris Nelsons conducting the CBSO one last time in Oxford before he moves to takes up his new post as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Alison Giles, Artistic Director of Music at Oxford said: ‘Nothing beats live performance. The relative intimacy of so many Oxford venues – the Sheldonian Theatre, the Holywell Music Room, the chapels – as opposed to a conventional concert hall – is very special. To bring artists like Andris Nelsons, the CBSO, the Brodsky Quartet and Natalie Clein into these unique places is thrilling for all of us at Music at Oxford. Sharing the experience with our audiences is even better.’ Ticket prices begin at just £10, or £5 for students and under 18s. Season and group discounts are also available. Art Article:

‘Exploring Photography’ Sarah Wiseman Gallery Sarah Wiseman Gallery is presenting an exciting exhibition that explores photography in all its guises, as part of the inaugural Photography Oxford Festival. Artists Rory Carnegie, Rachael Edgar and David Rhys Jones all work using photography centrally in their work, but take things further by using experimental surfaces, digital media and even techniques that date back to Fox Talbert’s era. ‘Photography these days is such a diverse medium, with many artists using it in lots of different ways’, says gallery director Sarah Wiseman. ‘We’re excited to be taking this opportunity to explore those techniques with this exhibition’. David Rhys Jones takes photographs while out on pre-planned walks, typically around an urban area. He is drawn to the eccentricities found in UK towns; old shop signage, gargoyles or even graffiti; the layers and layers of history laid down by generations of inhabitants. David has recently completed a new series of work inspired by Oxford, using photography, ceramics and found objects. David Rhys Jones originally trained at the Slade, specialising in printmaking, before completing his masters in Ceramics at Central St Martins. His interest in transposing images onto different surfaces; silk, metal, plastic for instance – led to his method of using porcelain combined with photography and print. David is now based in Lewes, near Brighton, exhibiting widely, including at the V&A, the Courtauld Institute, and Tate Modern. Rory Carnegie Rory will be showing a selection of large-scale photographs from his ‘Port Meadow Dogs’ series. Working with local owners and walkers, he has completed a series documenting dogs that walk on the Meadow each day. He has photographed the landscape throughout the seasons, composing the images in layers, creating an ethereal, haunting portrait likeness - as a result they are almost painterly in quality, reminiscent of the style of Landseer or Stubbs. At the end of last year, Rory Carnegie won gold for Best Portrait Series category at the Association of Photographers Awards for the Port Meadow Dogs series. Rory Carnegie is based in Oxford. He is an award winning photographer, and his work has been published in The Observer, LA Times, The Telegraph Magazine, The Sunday Times, GQ, The Independent Magazine, Creative Review and the British Journal of Photography. Rachael Edgar is best known for her printmaking, creating surreal images based on song-lyrics, poetry and folklore. Fresh from her post-graduate degree, she has created a new series of contemporary work using a very early photographic process, first used by the nineteenth century pioneers in photography. Gum Bichromate photography works by the artist coating a surface (such as paper) or in Rachael’s case, glass, in a light-sensitive emulsion. The print is made by applying a transparency (a photo-negative, for example) to the coated surface and exposing it to a UV light-source. The resulting print is manipulated by hand to achieve varied results, combining technical knowhow with sensitive artistry. Accommodation Review:

The Bear & Ragged Staff

Reviewed by Gillie Coghlan Monday 11th August

I was warmly welcomed in reception and taken to my gorgeous room, not being allowed to carry my own bag, by the very charming Hungarian Assistant Manager. He took me up the wonderful 16th century winding staircase to Room 9, and took time to explain all the facilities, the kettle, the drinks, the televisions, and the fire escapes; he covered all possibilities. The room is tucked under the beams in the eaves; there is a small, well-lit lobby, with full length mirror - good! - and built in wardrobe which houses a fluffy bathrobe, fridge with fresh milk and a selection of teas and coffee. The charming bedroom has a large double bed set under the eaves with leaded window, double glazed for a quiet night. The lighting is subtle and relaxing. The bathroom is heavenly; huge, light, clean, bright - with a large modern oblong bath, big square shower head, fab chaise longue, TV, liquid gels, fluffy towels and clean linens... perfect. There are many different areas to sit and have a drink, read the paper or meet friends; inside and out, with large seating features in the sunny garden or patio areas. There is plenty of space to get away from it all or be sociable as you choose. The restaurant is modern, welcoming and cosy at the same time with a large varied menu of delicious local and seasonal choices... I had the crab with crab custard which was simply divine; followed by crispy sea bream and lemon posset... all heavenly. My friend had the mackerel then the duck, both of which were beautifully presented and delicious. The wine list is varied, well priced and unusual. The hotel is located in a fairly small village only 4 miles from the centre of Oxford, so ideally placed for touring the area. There are 5 rooms in the original old building dating from 1535, and 4 rooms in the newer outbuildings. I greatly enjoyed my retreat to the Bear & Ragged Staff and would highly recommend to others.

Restaurant Review:

Brasserie Blanc

Reviewed by John Hobart Saturday 24th May

If you’ve been in Oxford a while you may remember the excited buzz around the city when Raymond Blanc opened La Petit Blanc in 1996. What is notable is that 18 years on there is still a palpable sense of excitement (and envy!) when you are heading to Walton Street and Brasserie Blanc – you won’t be disappointed! Converted from two houses on the corner of Walton and Juxon streets the restaurant has large glass windows on all sides making the dining rooms bright and airy. This is especially nice in the summer when the windows and doors are opened and the brasserie merges with the buzzing Jericho environment. My visit was on one such warm evening a few weeks ago, when with doors open to let in the summer breeze, we relaxed and enjoyed a treat of a meal. On arrival we were immediately welcomed, invited into a half-full dining room, and sat at a table by the window to study the menu over a beer, bread, oil and tapenade. The menu provides plenty of options for starters and mains with a range of meat and vegetarian dishes, tartares and steaks, fish and salads. Or if you’re looking for a smaller selection there is also a monthly set menu of two or three courses with a glass of wine. The drinks list, as you’d expect, offers an excellent selection of French wines by the glass and bottle. For starters we went for a plate of melt in the mouth Manx queen scallops topped with tomato, crushed new potato and basil, and a warm ox-tongue salad which was as delicate and soft as you could wish. For mains the award winning beef burger was perfectly cooked, succulent and in a delicious brioche bun, and the subtly flavoured Brixham crab with lemon mayonnaise took me back to summers by the sea! For desert I couldn’t resist the rich and indulgent Chocolate Marquise. The meal was delicious, the service attentive, the atmosphere relaxed, and at £78 the value for money can not be denied. That is the reason Brasserie Blanc has for 18 years held its reputation as one of the best restaurants in Oxford, and why you should go there to check for yourself! 71-72 Walton St, Oxford OX2 6AG Tel: 01865 510999 Web: www.brasserieblanc.com www.inoxford.com

Health Review:

Karina Barton Clinical Hypnotherapy Most of us lead such busy lives that it seems inevitable that stress and anxiety should become so intertwined with our daily existence that we barely even notice its presence. This exposure to prolonged stress and anxiety can start to alter our outlook on life, affecting the way we think, feel and behave and all too often we lose sight of our real selves. Sometimes we just need a little help and support to refocus on the future. As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist, I use well researched methods to help my clients work towards constructive changes in their lives. Emphasis is placed on what clients would like to achieve, through the creation of clear and constructive goals, rather than revisiting past events or traumas. Just a few examples of issues I have helped with: Stress, Sleep problems, Anxiety, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Chronic pain, Self confidence, Fears and phobias, Relationship problems, Unwanted habits. A lot of my clients are, initially, quite nervous about the process of hypnosis but it is actually the most natural thing in the world. We all go in and out of trance many times a day, driving home and forgetting the last part of the journey, getting caught up in a book and finding the whole afternoon has slipped by. Trance is a state of concentrated focus, similar to a day dream, you are in control at all times. In clinic, hypnosis is an extremely pleasant experience. It allows your body and mind time to relax and let go of stress. You just have to sit back in a comfortable chair and close your eyes. I use guided imagery and positive suggestion to encourage constructive change and let you consider alternative ways of dealing with the stresses of life. I firmly believe that therapy should be a fun and enjoyable experience and that you should leave each session relaxed and in control. To arrange a FREE initial consultation call 07749 218599.
