The Spice Lounge is located in the very desirable area of Summertown of North Oxford, and offers its restaurant goers some of the healthiest contemporary Indian dishes with a variety of ethnic recipes. It is apparent right from the outset that this restaurant is designed to impress with its very modern look and gentle atmosphere you are welcomed into. There is a choice to sit outside or within, which depending on the weather can be a great option, however, we decided to try inside to experience the atmosphere of what was building up to be a very busy restaurant Shortly after we were seated, we were served some bite sized poppadoms, costing only £1.95 per person. These delightful appetisers were only bettered by the great sauces they were served with. We decided to test the waters with Pyaz Pakora, priced at £3.95, which many people know as Onion Bhaji and Crispy Prawns, priced at £6.45. Both were ideal as they kept us ticking over with just the right amount of spices and flavour until our main meal came shortly after. For mains, there is a vast selection of dishes to decide between: Clay Oven, Khaane Khaas (Specials), Fish, Biryani, Unabashedly Indian (where you can decide from which part of indian you want your food) and Vegetarian Selection with the usual sides. This great selection allows for experienced restaurant goers to try something new and perfect for them and allows the less experienced to take it easy with some traditional but very well made dishes and, as most of the mains are under £10, it’s very affordable as well! We decided to go with an Unabashed Chicken Korma (spiced in a special mild and creamy sauce), priced at £7.95 and Maachli Bahar (Boneless Fish with onions, tomatoes, pepper and coriander) priced at £9.95 with Saag Rice (spinach) priced at £3.95 and two Roshan Naan (Garlic Naan) Priced at £3.45 each. The mains and the sides were all sublime and it really reflects how much thought, work and effort has gone into making this place into one of the best Indian Restaurants I've ever been to and the contemporary food and feel just gives it that extra something that makes you want to keep coming back for more. I highly recommend The Spice Lounge to anyone and everyone who likes their Indian food, it is fantastic value for money, and they even do a takeaway delivery too. Attraction Review
Oxford Castle – Unlocked is a 1000-year old castle, which was also used as a place of incarceration for over 800 years. The attraction offers a 40-minute guided tour with a costumed character from the castle’s history. Visitors to the site can experience the austere confines of the 18th century Debtors’ Tower and Prison D-wing; feel the dark atmosphere of the 900 year old underground Crypt where the education for which Oxford is famed began; marvel at the Mound of the 11th century motte and bailey castle; climb the Saxon St George’s Tower – the UK’s oldest surviving example as well as Oxford’s oldest building; and enjoy the unique 360° panoramic views over the historic city and its famous dreaming spires. Visitors can now explore the newly opened vaulted well chamber and punishment cells which were opened to the public for the first time in Spring 2012. Learn about the real people and events from the site’s turbulent past: the first Oxford teachings, the owners, visionaries, activists and inmates. People like Marshall William Smith, the King’s prison keeper during the English Civil War, who in the 1600s made Oxford Prison as feared and notorious as Colditz; Mary Blandy, a convicted murderess, who became an 18th century celebrity; Jack Ketch, the public executioner and the man on whom the Punch & Judy hangman character was modelled; and Anne Green, who survived her own hanging and narrowly escaped being anatomised by an Oxford medical student in 1650! Tales of murder, romance, betrayal and execution are told daily with tours leaving every 20 minutes. Visitors can also take the opportunity to relax in Café 1071, which boasts a fantastic view of the castle and mound, and offers a selection of hot and cold drinks, lunches and snacks. The atmosphere is perfect for a lunch out, a coffee catch-up or a business meeting on-the-go. Free wi-fi is available. Oxford Castle - Unlocked is open daily from 10.00am to 5.30pm (last tour 4.20pm). Music Feature
This unique hall was inspired by the wish to create a living memorial to the renowned cellist Jacqueline du Pré. The elegant and modern 200-seat auditorium provides an intimate environment and wonderful acoustics making it the perfect venue for chamber music. The building has five practice rooms, an electroacoustic studio, and Steinway D Piano. St Hilda’s College is committed to sustaining and developing the JdP as a centre for the learning, teaching, performance, and experience of music at all levels, at all ages, and from all backgrounds. Our programme this season is diverse as always, featuring world-class performers in repertoire ranging from the classical to the contemporary. Whether at our Piano and String Series, M@SH concerts, Lunchtime Recitals, or our Education and Community Programme, we hope there is something for everyone to enjoy. Joanna MacGregor returns to our Piano Series with a programme of Beethoven sonatas, and we are also pleased to welcome back Jonathan Biss who brings us works by Schumann, Berg, and Janácek. Jonathan Powell offers a complete performance of Messiaen’s Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus, and our new artist this season, Bernard d’Ascoli, will perform a programme focussing on Debussy and Ravel. Our String Series this year has a special flavour. As well as a concert by our patron Steven Isserlis – whose performances are always highly anticipated – we are delighted to announce a commemorative concert, given by cellist Natalie Clein and pianist Katya Apekisheva to mark the 25th anniversary of Jacqueline du Pré’s death. We also look forward to performances from the Elias String Quartet, Piatti Quartet, and violinist Kyrsia Osostowicz with pianist Daniel Tong. Marking the centenary of the work’s premiere in 1912, this year’s M@SH Series opens with Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire in the hands of renowned contemporary music performers Loré Lixenberg and CHROMA. The ‘Mini M@SH’ festival in January features leading artists performing new compositions in workshop and in concert, while this year’s M@SH Marathon is bigger and better than ever. Our weekly Lunchtime Recitals take place at 1.15pm every Thursday during term, and the November instalment of our Moving Music Concerts – for people with dementia and their carers – will be given by students from St Hilda’s College. Finally, Rozzy and Mr Cello will be introducing the Guitar, Oboe, and Tuba – though not all at the same time! – to children and their families in our monthly Cushion Concerts. In addition to the JdP programme, we have many community events and charity concerts – please check the JdP website for details. We very much hope you will find something to entice you in this exciting programme, and we look forward to welcoming you at the JdP soon. Accommodation Review
The Old Swan captures the charm of bygone years, throw in a good measure of modern convenience, add to it the laid-back atmosphere of the gastro-pub inspired dining room and log-fired bar and you’ll feel like there’s no place like it. The setting couldn’t be more romantic if it tried. Next door at the Minster Mill, you’ll find a slightly less posh country-cousin. A bit of an upstart; funky modern rooms, smaller and without the history but all with the familiar style and personal touches that the de Savary Family cram in by the bucketload. Here on a budget and also offering flexibility for small groups and private parties. At the heart of the Old Minster village and with a history going back almost 600 years, the Old Swan & Minster Mill couldn’t be more quintessentially English. The perfect spot to escape the city and explore the Cotswolds. Or just relax, spa and dine. Offering both traditional and luxurious accommodation in the Old Swan and more modest and contemporary rooms at the Minster Mill, all rooms are well thought out and offer modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, DDI telephones and flat screen TVs. One of the finest places to stay in the Cotswolds. DELICIOUS GASTRO-PUB FOOD, COOKED SIMPLY. Expect superb fresh local ingredients crafted into hearty dishes served with gusto and panache. The Old Swan’s dining rooms and bars are a myriad of smaller heavily beamed, cosy quarters with roaring log fires, rugged flag-stone floors contrasted by quirky decorations. There are a choice of dining rooms depending on your numbers, occasion and preference. Celebrated for the outstanding and creative cooking of internationally renowned Head Chef, David Mwita, reservations are always recommended. Dine outdoors through the summer months in the Old Swan picture-book gardens. KNOWING THE LUXURY AND ENJOYMENT TO BE HAD FROM A RELAXING MASSAGE OR SPECIALIST FACIAL, THE TREATMENT ROOM OFFERS A SELECTION OF HOLISTIC TREATMENTS FROM BEAUTY AND WELLBEING SPECIALIST YON-KA. The state-of-the-art Windrush Spa alongside the River Windrush will have an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam and a full range of specialist treatments. We do recommend booking ahead at time of reservation. Relax, enjoy and have fun!
