Welcome to Living in Oxford Welcome to the September edition of Living in Oxford. We’ve got a brand new website launching this month which is great news for everyone! Thanks to Lorna who has been toiling away on the site, Keith for designing it and Emma for filling it to the brim with great content! We hope you like it. See our promo for the new site on pages 14 to 17. We also launch voting for The 2016 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards which take place on 1st November. If you would like to vote for your favourite, see the runners and riders on pages 70 to 71. And so to this issue. Once again we’re chokka with great ideas for things to do, restaurants to eat at and more. We take a look ahead to the Oxford Castle Unlocked Halloween Festival, take a punt down the river with Cherwell Boathouse and find out more about Wiseman Gallery’s ‘Seeking Light’ exhibition (3rd to 24th September). For foodies out there we review The Partridge Inn in Wallingford, The Oxford Kitchen in Summertown and also 1855 Wine Bar in Oxford Castle Quarter. Special mention to GAF in Cowley – what a treat that was, read more inside. With contributions from Stagecoach Oxford and Frilford Heath Golf Club, enjoy the remainder of the summer (really?) with Living in Oxford Magazine, because this time next month we’ll be coming to you under 6 feet of snow, probably! Event Article:
Halloween festival returns with a vengeance to Oxford’s ancient castle Oxford Castle Unlocked is preparing to welcome daring visitors, ghost hunters and thrill-seekers back this October for Ghost Fest, a month-long Halloween festival, as it returns to the 1000 year old site for the tenth year running. A packed schedule sees three brand new events in the festival calendar, with something for every age group and fear tolerance! Aspiring ghost hunters can explore the austere confines of the castle prison overnight on select nights throughout the Festival. Plus, for one night only on 28 October, join parapsychologist Ciaràn O’Keeffe from Most Haunted for a ghost hunting masterclass and behind the scenes secrets from the hit TV show! New for 2016, Truth & Dare Tours will see guests embarking on a tour with one of the ghoulish castle characters, learning about the betrayals, executions and rumoured spirits who haunt the historic surrounds before daring to complete the Gauntlet of Terror, with live actors on hand to ensure it will be an experience to remember. Another new opportunity this year is the Halloween Midnight Tour (suitable for ages 18+ only). On Halloween night from 11pm, brace yourself for a special spooky tour encompassing the castle’s deepest, darkest corners! At the stroke of midnight, the tour will conclude with a glass of bubbly to toast the end of Halloween. Families don’t miss out either during October half term, beginning on 22 October. Avoid the mess of pumpkin carving at home and bring the children to carve their very own pumpkin at Oxford Castle Unlocked for FREE!* Always a popular event, Trick or Treating evenings return on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October from 5pm plus a special after-school session on Monday 31 October from 4.30pm. The castle’s prison wing offers the ultimate venue for some trick or treating as families are encouraged to knock on each cell door for spooky encounters and sweet rewards! Oxford Castle Unlocked is located on the former site of HMP Oxford but has stood as a Castle for 1000 years, spending 800 of those years as a place of incarceration. Throughout the year, the attraction offers a 40-minute guided tour, inviting guests to discover the origins of Oxford and the role the castle played in developing the incredible city of dreaming spires we know and love today. For more details on Ghost Fest and to book online, visit www. oxfordcastleunlocked.co.uk *This activity is free when accompanied with admission to Oxford Castle Unlocked. 44-46 Oxford Castle, Oxford OX1 1AY Tel: 01865 260 666 Web: www.oxfordcastleunlocked.co.uk www.livinginoxford.com

A Punting Adventure for Everyone
Reviewed by Nele Ollech Sunday 7th August
Need to get out and mess about on the water? Cherwell Boathouse is the perfect choice to get away – try punting and soak in the nature on the River Cherwell. The rarely seen English summer was on our side as I spent one sunny Sunday morning on the water with two of my friends. The lovely Cherwell Boathouse was a great location for taking a break from the crowded city and for having a wonderful time together. Well, for the one friend who did the punting it was quite exhausting at first but after some practising, everyone on our punt was relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed this very ‘English’ experience. You can hire a punt for a maximum of 6 people (age 16+) on weekdays for £16 an hour, £80 for a full day, or at the weekend for £18 an hour or £90 for a full day. You then get your punt, a metal pole, some cushions for the boat and a paddle...just in case! At the beginning of our trip we received a briefing to familiarise us with the punting technique. This was rather an essential briefing for us! We had no idea how to punt being from Germany! Stefan soon got the hand of punting and didn’t even come close to falling in...a little disappointing to be honest! It helped that he is something of a giant but don’t let that put you off – punting can be accomplished by all shapes and sizes. I didn’t realise punting was so popular and it’s a definite ‘must do’ when visiting Oxford! Because the punts are allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis, if it’s a sunny day I highly recommend you get to the Boathouse early, as we did. When we arrived back, after about two hours, the place was packed. We went past University Parks down to The Grove near to Magdalen College. After punting you can build up quite an appetite (apparently!) so why not book a table at the superb Cherwell Boathouse restaurant….the perfect location to unwind even more after your punting experience. Thank you Cherwell Boathouse for a great experience and a perfect day, we really enjoyed it!

Theatre Review:
Legally Blonde
by Stagecoach Oxford
Reviewed by Matthew Wright Friday 29th July
You’ve probably read about Legally Blonde in the gossip columns recently, following the trials and tribulations of its West End star, Sheridan Smith. I wonder what she’d make of having to cast, rehearse, and perform a two hour play in only six days like the 13-19 year old students from Stagecoach Theatre Arts Oxford? To set the scene, Legally Blonde is a musical about lawyers, with the twist that the central character, Elle Woods, is better known for her love of fashion and all things pink rather than a deep-seated interest in the law. However, through the application of common sense and approachability, Elle flourishes at Harvard and goes on to…..well, let’s not give too much away. Beatrice Norris (Elle) and Ben Ashton (Callaghan – a fearsome law professor) were absolutely compelling in the lead roles, displaying a range of acting, singing, and dancing abilities worthy of a West End stage. They were ably supported by Elle’s mentor, Emmett (Ethan Sarphie) and her confidante Paulette (Lisa Baldacino) who both performed taxing solos amidst a flurry of onstage activity, with the action moving from seamlessly from courtroom, to hair salon to a fitness video…..I kid you not! The costumes and choreography were superb – 6 days, I remind you, 6 days! – as was the lighting, stage design, and musical accompaniment…. in short, everything you’d expect from a professional theatre production. To add to the achievement, a large contingent of the cast was drawn from an exchange programme with Stagecoach Malta, for whom English is not even their first language. It says a lot about their acting prowess that it was hard to identify them on stage….although I have a sneaking suspicion that the dancing Irish leprechaun sported more of a tan than is customary in the Emerald Isle. Stagecoach has been part of the education and youth theatre scene in Oxford for the past 25 years, with two new centres set to open in September 2016 – in Botley and Kidlington. As a measure of its success, Stagecoach’s students regularly appear on tv, film, and stage, both locally and nationally...which shouldn't come as much of a surprise after such an accomplished production. Perhaps the last word should go the sign-off in the evening’s programme: “Congratulations to all our cast – British, Maltese, and canine!” (Spoiler alert – sorry, I forgot to mention Jessie, who played the part of Paulette’s estranged pet!)

Art & Antiques Article:
Daniel Ablitt ‘Seeking Light’ Solo Exhibition Saturday 3rd - Saturday 24th September 2016 Sarah Wiseman Gallery, Oxford’s largest independent gallery space and now in its eighteenth year, has built a strong reputation for ambitious and engaging exhibitions of contemporary art by established as well as emerging creative talent. The Gallery represents a varied group of artists with an eye to individuality and technical accomplishment, reflecting our passion and commitment to contemporary art. In September, acclaimed artist Daniel Ablitt will exhibit a new collection of his compelling, dream-like landscapes in his first solo exhibition at the gallery. The landscape represents to Daniel a profound world of relationships between our environment, our memories of it and our personal identity. Daniel’s paintings do not set out to record a likeness of a particular location, rather he seeks to engage with the intrinsic effect it has on us as human beings. To Daniel, the nature of the light in a landscape is inextricably linked to our recollection of it. In his paintings the viewer may find bright, dappled sunlight as seen through tree branches, the opaque flatness of daylight on a cloudy day, starlight in the night sky or a glimmering light in a window glimpsed from a distance. The light in his paintings takes on a visionary quality; tiny, glowing orbs may appear in the landscape, giving the scene an aspect of magical realism, perhaps reflecting a sense of nostalgia or depth of feeling for the fleeting moment captured. Small, quiet figures are placed within the landscape, hinting at a suggested narrative and inviting us to form an emotional connection with the composition. Daniel explains: “I’m looking to draw the viewer into the paintings, to take them on a personal journey into their own memories or into imagined possibilities.” In some paintings, Daniel’s positioning of the figures seem to heighten the sense of reflection as they are depicted in the foreground with their back turned towards the viewer, looking into the landscape along with us. These moments of perfect stillness is a theme to which Daniel is increasingly drawn: “I am finding more often that I am searching for a place of peace in the work. A contemplation.” Daniel’s paintings are depictions of half-remembered and part-imagined places, inspired by his travels and memories, delving into his own personal mythology but with an imagery that speaks to all of us. 40-41 South Parade, Summertown, Oxford, OX2 7JL Tel: 01865 515123 Web: www.wisegal.com www.livinginoxford.com

Sport Review:
Frilford Heath Golf Club
Reviewed by Colin Rosser
Frilford Heath Golf Club is one of the few Golf Clubs in Southern England to boast three separate 18 hole courses, each with its own character. It is located just off the A34 South of Oxford making it easily accessible whilst driving from any direction and when you get there it is always well worth the journey. My friends and I played the Green Course: Although the shortest of the courses on offer from Frilford, still requires you to plot your way round to ensure a good score. After the enormous amount of rain we have had this Winter you would expect a lot of water and mud, but thanks to the sandy subsoil the course was dry and very playable. The fairways and greens were immaculate as they always are. The outward nine is the easier and starts with the only par five, but the 7th is a long par four which is quite rightly stroke index 1! Coming home there are four particularly tough par fours, the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th which really gives the course some teeth! They are followed by a long par three and to end with a tricky short par four. After the game we all had a refreshing shower where towels are always supplied and then went to the bar. There are a great range of both soft and alcoholic drinks available. We were just in time to catch the last of The Green Thai Chicken Curry which went down superbly with a pint of IPA! The food in my experience is without equal in Oxfordshire Golf Clubs, and on the many occasions I have been here I have never had a bad meal. The Golf Club is hugely popular with Societies and host meetings with up to 200 players. It also caters for a number of Local, National and International Tournaments, which is well beyond the capabilities of the majority of Golf Clubs. Due to there being three courses available you do not have to book a tee time, however the club will book a tee time if you take a group. The Courses are divided between accepting two, three and fourball games on a rotational basis. It is a very friendly club and a guest or new member would not have a problem linking up with different groups for a game. As you would expect Frilford has a well stocked Golf Shop offering a large array of equipment and accessories for sale or hire. Golf lessons are available from Derek Craik, the Head Teaching professional. In the winter the club hope to open a new 6 hole par 3 course for its members and their guests – so Frilford will have 60 holes of golf that you can play! For Membership enquiries please contact the Executive Chairman, Alistair Booth or the General Manager both of whom I have always found very approachable and keen to help prospective Members.

GAF
Reviewed by Richard Rosser
If you’d told me I was going out to drink a blueberry cocktail and water throughout a meal, I’d have probably said ‘thanks but no thanks’. If you’d tried to convince me by adding I would be eating crackers with burnt aubergine, I think you know what my response would have been. Most people would give up after being turned down once, let alone twice. But let’s presume you’re persistent. Offer me sheep’s curd, a pile of leaves and burnt cauliflower and I’d have already been down the road….in the opposite direction. But these and other incredible creations are at the heart of GAF’s menu in unassuming Magdalen Road, Cowley. Our engaging host George talked Tina and I through each and every course that was presented to us and each time our level of amazement went up a notch. Not only were the dishes beautifully presented by Executive Chef, Anthony Pitcher, they unlocked taste buds we didn’t know we had. As a finale we were treated to Raspberry Posset, which George explained, refreshingly, was evolved as something of a mistake, “Chef dropped some burnt mustard seeds into the mix and it worked.” By George it worked! It was amazing. Incredible textures and bubble gum pink. To accompany coffee, horseradish and chocolate doesn’t sound great, but not only was it tasty, it was also a masterpiece in its construction. Feather light, beautiful in composition and just enough to round off a perfect meal. Thank you to Anthony, Drew and George and all of your colleagues. These guys deserve success so make sure you get down to GAF and experience something special. Magdalen Road, Oxford, OX4 1RB | 01865 243280 www.livinginoxford.com

1855 Wine Bar Reviewed by Lucy Howard Saturday 6th August
Visiting on a sunny weekend, Oxford’s attractive castle complex was buzzing with people sitting outside and making the most of the sunshine, as well as enjoying a food festival which had several stalls of tempting treats – but we were heading to the equally tempting 1855. 1855 was named after the year France classified the most prestigious chateaux in the Bordeaux wine region, and this lovely wine bar offers an impressive variety of vintages from all over the world. They also serve up some irresistible food to go with it, with a classy menu featuring seasonal and locally-sourced produce as well as French, Italian and Spanish classics – and as with the wine, the food is chosen carefully for its taste and its provenance, working in close collaboration with producers – and it shows. The wide range of charcuterie and cheese options are beautifully presented and taste as good as they look, and we also enjoyed one of the best pork pies we’d ever had, alongside a mouth-watering mezze platter piled high with bruschetta topped with red pepper and capers, as well as creamy Windrush goat’s cheese (a local cheese), a variety of biscuits and oatcakes, a salad of rocket and parmesan, and juicy olives and grapes. One of my favourite cheeses – Reblochon, a French staple - also didn’t disappoint. For dessert, a gooey chocolate brownie and a tangy orange cake certainly hit the spot and didn’t last long, and choosing from the extensive wine list (which is like a book), we tried a French white wine and an Italian sparkling wine to wash it all down with – and we couldn’t resist taking a bottle of French red home with us. For a brunch, lunch or dinner at the weekend, or at any time of the week, 1855 is a fantastic option. Bag a table on the lovely terrace in the sun (or enjoy the cosy candlelit interior if it’s not so sunny), and linger over the beautiful food and the wide range of wines, served by attentive and knowledgeable staff whose passion for the finer things in life is evident.

The Oxford Kitchen Reviewed by Emma Gascoigne Friday 3rd July
During lazy weekends meandering around Summertown, I had never noticed The Oxford Kitchen. If that had continued to be the case, I would never have experienced this culinary gem, which would have been a real shame! From the moment I walked into The Oxford Kitchen, it felt like a place that I wanted to be on a Friday night. It was relaxed and elegant yet did not stray into being pretentious with friendly and charming staff. With the addition of the amazing food being served, it felt like we’d finally found Oxford’s fine dining secret. The menu provides a lot of choice for any foodie. They also had a tasting menu with matching wines. This might be something I would come back and try sometime for a special occasion as it sounded and looked amazing. It was a hot day (hard to believe as I write this with rain pouring down) so I went for the tomato gazpacho; the flavours were out of this world. My main followed of beef and pork belly and this was again well presented and delicious. The chef here knows exactly what food works together and delivers constantly on flavour. The presentation of the main was also worthy of hanging in a gallery, it looked that amazing. With all the dishes there was an element of theatre in the delivery and I rather enjoy that as it made the evening even more special. This has to be one of the best restaurants in Oxford at the moment. At the end of the night, we were asked if we had enjoyed our experience. We really had and I can’t wait to find an excuse to go back again soon. I’m turning 30 soon, so here’s hoping!

The Partridge Inn at Wallingford
Reviewed by Nele Ollech 10th August
We visited The Partridge in Wallingford on a fine Summer’s evening. After a warm welcome we were able to choose a table we liked and settle in to the pleasant and comfortable atmosphere of the inn. The ambience was perfect, with enough people dining to provide a calm buzz without feeling over-crowded. The light was dimmed with lovely candles everywhere, and well-matched decorations such as cushions, wine bottles, and antiqued wooden boxes. The layout of the tables gave you the option for either a more secluded meal or something closer to the heart of the restaurant. The whole setting was overall very well thought out, with the great décor even going as far as the facilities which a lot of restaurants seem to forget about. The staff also were very attentive, polite and obliging for the whole evening. We began our meal with a lovely local Elderflower Bubbly (as refreshing as the name suggests), followed promptly with a great selection of fresh breads and organic extra virgin olive oil and Aspall organic balsamic vinegar, a combination you can not go wrong with. The drinks on offer covered a wide variety, from local beers to organic cola and a selection of Luscome beverages. For our main courses we chose the sumptuous 10 oz. Rib Eye steak and enquired with the wait staff as to what wine to pair with it. The Partridge has a well-rounded selection of wines from across the globe including South Africa, Europe and New Zealand. The staff recommended us a Merlot but insisted that they also ask the owner of the inn, Matthew, for his personal recommendation. Matthew came happily and took the time to explain their wine list and help us with our choice. In the end we were more than satisfied with our decision. Our steaks were served with basil oil dressed local leaf and toasted almond salad, and triple cooked potato chips or sweet potato fries (we both chose the sweet potato fries and didn’t for one moment regret the choice). We also added a steak sauce and had the option of either Gorgonzola, peppercorn, or garlic & Worcester. At first we ordered our steaks ‘well done’ but Matthew gave us some good advice and suggested we try our steaks closer to medium, explained to us just how he would prepare it, and said that if we didn’t prefer it that way then we could send it back. We definitely preferred it, and I think we’ve been converted to ‘medium’ steak eaters now. The meat was done to perfection. For our desserts we both had the Belgian chocolate brownie and could not fault it one bit. Delicious without being too rich or sickly. The menu on the whole was very well constructed and not overloaded with choice. The Partridge know what they want to provide and don’t try to stretch themselves too thin by having an expansive and overwhelming menu.
