Welcome... Hello again to IN&AROUND! Where has 2017 gone? We are once again at the time of year characterised by gunpowder, treason and plot, although there’s no need for any Guy Fawkes to blow up parliament this year – the continued to-ing and fro-ing around Brexit is doing a perfectly fine job of that, as you can read more about on page 12. Could the UK be heading out of the EU without a trade deal?

Elsewhere in the November issue of our free magazine for Durham, Chester-le-Street and Derwentside, you’ll find plenty of great articles of more obvious local interest, as we check out Diggerland Durham and draw parallels between one of Hartlepool’s greatest attractions – HMS Trincomalee – and the celebrated HMS Trafalgar. As happens every month here at IN&AROUND, we’ve also got some fabulous competitions for you to enter, thanks to Vue Gateshead and the Sunderland Empire. They’re two of the North East’s greatest entertainment venues, and you could be attending a film or show at one of them next for absolutely nothing. Finally, we also have to say – once again – a massive “thank you” to our advertisers. They continue to be the heroes who make IN&AROUND possible, and if you fancy becoming one of them, we’ll welcome you with open arms! Give us a call on 0191 388 2698 or send us an email via sales@inandaroundmag.co.uk to learn more about our discounted three and six-month plans. That’s it for now – have a very happy (and safe!) Bonfire Night, and we’ll see you again for our final issue of the year in a month’s time.

A Look Back

Trafalgar and Trincomalee: a tale of two Napoleonic ships Have you been watching the ITV period drama Victoria recently? Okay, so we already know that the answer is probably yes. After all, the first series was ITV’s highest-rated drama last year, attracting an average of 7.7 million viewers per episode. The second series started in August, but you may have done a double take at a particular scene in which the young Queen Victoria, played by Jenna Coleman, addresses a crowd at the 1841 launch of a ship called HMS Trafalgar. You might have had more than a slight sense of déjà vu upon clapping eyes on the scenery. That’s because the backdrop was actually the Hartlepool base of the National Museum of the Royal Navy – and the ship itself was not the actual HMS Trafalgar which launched in 1841, but instead HMS Trincomalee, which has long been kept in Hartlepool for locals and visitors alike to look inside. Furthermore, a look at the histories of these two ships reveals some eye-opening differences.

An example of a Trafalgar legacy that endured at sea While TV period dramas have developed a rather comic reputation 6 | IN&AROUND

for historical accuracies, Queen Victoria did indeed – as depicted by Jenna Coleman – attend the launch of HMS Trafalgar. That was, in fact, the second Royal Navy ship to take the name of HMS Trafalgar – a reference to the Battle of Trafalgar, an 1805 naval conflict that marked one of Britain’s greatest triumphs in the Napoleonic Wars. The first ship was a 106-gun vessel launched in 1820 but renamed five years later. The second HMS Trafalgar was a Caledonia class ship with 120 guns. However, the launch took place not in Hartlepool, but instead in Woolwich Dockyard. That dockyard lining the River Thames no longer remains, but it was a site of extensive shipbuilding from the early 16th to the late 19th century. The ship itself was, at the Queen’s request, named by Lady Bridport, a niece of Lord Nelson, the British naval officer who was the architect of the Battle of Trafalgar victory. Tragically, Nelson was killed during that battle and was therefore unable to personally attend the launch of HMS Trafalgar. However, on board the ship were a hundred people who had been

at the Battle of Trafalgar. Although the ship was, in 1859, modified with the addition of screw propulsion, it was given the new name HMS Boscawen only 14 years later and sold in 1906.

HMS Trincomalee: truly from the time of Napoleon Ironically, HMS Trincomalee was actually launched in 1817 – not only 24 years earlier than the ship it has recently emulated on TV, but also when Napoleon himself was still alive. That year, he was being kept prisoner in exile on the distant Atlantic island of St Helena, having been defeated at the Battle of Waterloo two years earlier. Trincomalee also stayed in service until 1986 – in other words, for much longer than the aforementioned HMS Trafalgar. It’s certainly a delight that we can still enjoy visiting Trincomalee here in the North East.

Politics update

What you need to know about this year’s party conference season

What would a ‘no-deal’ Brexit actually mean? Yes, we know you’re probably more than a little sick of publications like ourselves here at IN&AROUND still ‘banging on’ about the UK’s impending departure from the European Union - but let’s be honest, it’s something we still have to talk about. That is not least the case amid recent intensifying talk that we may end up leaving the EU in March 2019 with no formal agreement in place at all. Whether you’ve heard it described as a ‘no-deal’ Brexit or a ‘hard’ Brexit, a lot has been speculated about what departing the EU in such circumstances might entail.

How many people want a ‘no-deal’ Brexit? Despite Prime Minister Theresa May’s early insistence that “no deal is better than a bad deal”, it doesn’t seem to be an eventuality relished by too many people. President of the European Council Donald Tusk, for example, declared earlier this year that “a no-deal scenario would be bad for everyone”. Meanwhile, according to a Survation poll just after the election, as many as two-thirds of Brits believed that an EU departure without “a mutually agreed deal” would be bad for the country, with just 26% reckoning it would be a good thing. Such scepticism was mirrored in similar polls.

So, will there be chaos? With supporters of leaving the EU having long decried what they have described as ‘Project Fear’ scaremongering among those who campaigned in favour of remaining in the bloc, it might not be a great surprise that there have been many headlines suggesting chaos would reign from the first day of a ‘hard’ Brexit. In July, for instance, New Statesman’s Julia Rampen outlined a series of things that she expected to happen 12 | IN&AROUND

on “No Deal Brexit Day”, including legal chaos, the reappearance of a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, food price rises and trading with the EU defaulting to World Trade Organisation rules. She added, of the latter: “In practical terms, this means lorry queues at border points like Dover and Calais.”

Or are we all getting a bit ahead of ourselves? Of course, the other school of thought is that we’re all getting slightly overdramatic about the whole thing. That certainly seemed to be the sentiment of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson back in March, when he told ITV: “I don’t think that the consequences of a no-deal are by any means as apocalyptic as some people like to pretend.” Much more recently, in early October, in a debate with Labour MP Mary Creagh in City A.M. about the potential consequences of a ‘no deal’, BrexitCentral deputy editor Hugh Bennett said that “the key factor in determining whether ‘no deal’ can work for the UK comes down to whether the government commits serious resources to planning for it. “There are issues to resolve whether the UK leaves with or without a deal, but none will ultimately prove too challenging if the right preparations are made in good time.” So, there you have it. Could a ‘no-deal’ Brexit be the catastrophe that it has been predicted it will be in some quarters? The balance of opinion seems to be... possibly, but possibly not. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates on the matter in future months’ issues of IN&AROUND.

Equity Release: The facts not the fiction How safe is equity release? Equity release advice and lending is fully regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Further safeguards are provided by the Equity Release Council such as the ‘no negative equity guarantee’ which ensures that you will never owe more than your house is worth. Will I still own my home? Yes, with a lifetime mortgage your home remains entirely your own and you can continue living there for as long as you choose. A lifetime mortgage is secured against your home like a traditional mortgage. Can I move home? Yes, you are free to move home at any point in the future and take the plan with you (subject to provider criteria).

Can I still leave an inheritance for my family? Equity release will affect the inheritance you leave, however there are certain plans available which allow you to protect a percentage of the value of your home to leave to your loved ones.

that’s tied up in your home Need more retirement money? You could find it right at home Money can be increasingly difficult to come by as life progresses. That's a rather sobering thought - especially if you are preparing for what you hope will be a comfortable retirement, but can't help fretting about where the money necessary for this is going to come from. However, you don't have to resort to hoping for a lottery win, as all of the money that you need could be in your current residence. No, this isn't about looking down the back of sofas for loose change. Here, we are referring to equity release, which people aged over 55 can use to withdraw value from their property without having to sell it.

Equity release in a nutshell Recently, more and more UK homeowners have seen merits of equity release. In fact, in this year's first half, over 17,500 - a 44% greater number than in 2016 - opted for an equity release plan. This kind of plan is often dubbed a lifetime mortgage; however, you do not need to quickly repay it.

anticipate otherwise struggling to make ends meet during retirement. Money unlocked from equity release can meet various costs including those of bills, holidays, home improvements, and gifts to family.

The first steps to realising the financial potential Equity release is not for everyone - particularly as it will reduce the estate's value and could hit entitlement to means-tested benefits. However, for many people aged between 55 and 95, it could build on their previous efforts towards building the lifetime financial cushion that they need. Our trusted equity release partner offers ERC council approved plans which ensure you can never owe more than the value of your own home. Provided that you fall into the eligible age range and own a UK property with a minimum value of ÂŁ70,000, you can consider any of these plans. You can start discussing the options in a chat with Plan For Probate by phone on 0191 388 9717 or 07463 336 330. Alternatively, you can email the company through peter@planforprobate.com.

While that plan will gather interest over time, neither the loan nor interest has to be repaid until after the client's death or admission into long-term care. With a joint plan covering more than one person, repayments would not start until the last surviving client dies or is admitted into long-term care. Hence, equity release can have obvious appeal for elderly individuals or couples who

An Overlooked Gem

Diggerland Durham, Langley Park In 1996, Hugh Edeleanu watched in fascination as, at a family fun day put on by his company H. E. Services, children reacted with excitement to the digging construction machinery on display. This was the kind of machinery that the company routinely made available for hire, but it clearly wasn’t just adults who appreciated seeing it. This provided Hugh with a major spark of inspiration… Why not open up a family-friendly adventure park dedicated to diggers? That was Hugh’s idea, and he brought it to fruition. The park was called Diggerland and opened in Kent in April

2000. Clearly, many people liked not having to wait until an open day before seeing this kind of machinery on public display; the park attracted more than 20,000 visitors during its first year. Unsurprisingly, this led to the opening of a second Diggerland park – this time in County Durham. Diggerland Durham, as it is officially called, first swung open its gates in March 2001 and today, has an impressive variety of rides and drives. Those include mini tractors, dodgems and go-karts… and you can also take the Diggerland Skyshuttle to see stunning views from a 50-foot height. There are many ingredients at Diggerland Durham for an exciting day out. The park is also easily reachable by public transport; Durham railway station is only about five miles away. Once you’ve got off a train there, you can take a Go North East-operated 13 or 14 bus to finally reach the park itself.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie Cast: Jackie Chan (Master Wu), Dave Franco (Llyod), Fred Armisen (Cole), Kumail Nanjiani (Jay), Michael Peña (Kai) Abbi Jacobson (Nya), Zach Woods (Zane), Justin Theroux (Garmadon) What, there’s another Lego movie? Great! Who could forget The Lego Movie’s ridiculously catchy theme song “Everything is Awesome” and the wonderfully silly take on the Caped Crusader with The Lego Batman Movie? With both films having widely attracted critical acclaim, the anticipation was understandably – wait for it – building for this third one, which takes the Lego Ninjago toy line as its main inspiration. Alas, it’s not quite awesome… but it’s not awful, either. The Lego Ninjago toys, if you know little about them, are centred on ninja warriors, who nonetheless have sophisticated vehicles and technology that would look more fitting in a Transformers film than feudal Japan. Indeed, if you like your battling robots made out of Lego, you’ll delight in this film’s large-scale action sequences that unfold in the Lego-ised city of Ninjago. However, if you deem the Transformers films derivative, early scenes of this movie could somewhat depress. The focus largely falls onto Lloyd Garmadon, a schoolboy who is socially spurned due to his evil father Lord Garmadon’s frequent attacks on the city, which he is eager to take over. However, Lloyd leads a secret group of ninjas who constantly thwart his father and are mentored by Master Wu, aptly voiced by Jackie Chan. Seriously, if there’s ever an official Lego Power Rangers line that makes the leap to cinema screens, it’d be hard to imagine that film coming out much different to this. This gets to the crux of the problem with The Lego Ninjago Movie: it often feels too familiar. Telling a rite of passage story with an Eastern martial arts theme has already recently been done brilliantly by the Kung Fu Panda franchise, leaving The Lego Ninjago Movie with little fresh ground to cover. It does, at least, tend to run through the more serious 22 | IN&AROUND

sequences quite well; Lloyd’s scenes with his endearingly protective mother “Koko”, voiced by Olivia Munn, are particular highlights. Dave Franco – a younger brother of James Franco –nails the nervousness and naivety you would expect from his clichéd, Luke Skywalker-like lead. However, Justin Theroux’s Lord Garmadon can seem overbearing at times, with many of the attempts at humour coming from his mouth feeling forced. He ends up rather reminiscent of a comedian who lacks enough decent material and so has to resort to throwing random, spontaneous jokes left, right and centre to see what sticks. Still, the film is enlivened by some neat touches – including, in the UK version, Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway voicing themselves as Lego newscasters. There’s also the visually striking live action element of a real cat running havoc in the computer-animated Lego city. Such moments help carry over much cutesy and charm from previous Lego cinematic instalments.

A brand new networking group has been founded specifically for businesses based in Durham by two local businessmen. Next Generation Networking held its first meeting in July just outside Durham City at the Extra Time Cafe Bar, New Ferens Park, Durham. The group is the brainchild of Richard Weatherburn, a Financial Adviser with St. James’s Place Wealth Management, and Craig Younger, of Castle Insurance Services. The group meets every week for an informal breakfast, as well as hosting a monthly social event and occasional lunch meetings with guest speakers to present on issues prevalent to local businesses. Craig said, ‘Rich and I are both seasoned networkers and good friends. We decided we would form our own group and bring the best of all the other various events we had attended under one umbrella.’ Although in its infancy the group has proved very popular, attracting up to 25 business owners to its weekly breakfast

gatherings. To avoid conflicts, only one business per industry is permitted to attend. Richard said, ‘We are keen to foster a team mentality within the group. Essentially what we are building is a group of friends that can assist in the growth of each other’s businesses. We avoid strict rules on attendance, forced referrals and the rigid structure found at similar events. Instead we focus on making the group a fun environment in which to network, develop relationships and exchange introductions.’ The pair are keen to replicate the success of their first group across other areas of the County, stating they have received unanimously positive feedback from their membership. If you are keen to discover if there is a slot available for your business in the group, contact Richard and Craig on 07528 208070 or 07909 994944 respectively.

TRAVEL

Places to go Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire

On the day before my recent visit to Newark, the Daily Express was warning of England receiving the tail end of the American hurricanes with winds of 70mph. As it turned out, it was rather a pleasant Sunday, and there was much more rain on the walk back to the car at Durham station than all day in Newark-on-Trent. I left Durham at 0938 on a direct Virgin Trains East Coast service to London, calling at Newark Northgate station at 1117. Many people on leaving the station turn right to walk along Northgate to the town centre. It’s quicker, though, to turn left on to Appleton Gate and enter the town past the Palace Theatre. Newark was built at the crossing of the Great North Road and the Fosse Way, two Roman routes which are now the A1 and the A46. When the railways arrived, two routes again emerged: the north-south East Coast Main Line calling at Newark Northgate and the east-west Nottingham to Lincoln line calling at Newark Castle. There is no rail service between the two stations, and the lines cross at the same level on one of the few flat-bed crossings left on the mainline network. Boat trips are available on the River Trent. I first visited Newark Castle itself, the ruins of which are in an attractive park opened to celebrate Queen

Victoria’s 70th birthday on 24th May 1889. There was an interesting exhibition in the North West Tower of the Castle about bad King John, who suffered dysentery after a major feast in King’s Lynn and losing his treasures when crossing the Wash. He died in the room above the Gatehouse at Newark Castle on 18th October 1216 to be succeeded by his nine year old son, Henry III, who made a much better fist of being King than he had. Time for lunch then and I chose the Danube restaurant, two excellent courses for £15 opposite the Registry Office on Castlegate, before poking round the Newark Antiques Centre and the shops which were mostly open on the Sunday. After a coffee I moved to the National Civil War Centre which incorporates the town museum. A Royalist town which suffered three sieges and a good dose of bubonic plague, Newark was a strategically important town for the King, and the exhibits were much more interesting than suggested by some tripadvisor reviews. The small cinema played some specially filmed sequences about the Civil War and characters from Newark who had

a role in it (look up the story of Hercules Clay), and there was the pleasure of seeing plaques later in the same streets featured in the film. There was also a continuing exhibition about T. E. “Lawrence of Arabia”. I wish I had allocated more time before closing at 1700. Evensong was a joy at 1800 in the Parish Church with the combined choirs of Newark and Grantham, followed by a tasty pizza on the Castle Barge, Newark’s floating pub. Go any day you want to Newark, but I am suggesting especially Sunday 26th November 2017 when a big fireworks display celebrates the turning on of the Christmas lights. On the way home, my intended 2048 train from Newark direct to Durham (2235) was cancelled so I had to take a following Leeds service to Leeds and transfer on to a TransPennine Express train which arrived at Durham at 2237, which meant I was 62 minutes late and able to claim a full refund on my ticket under the Delay Repay arrangements. No quibble, 100% refund of the £28.60 paid.

Meet PCSO Janelle Taylor... FOR as long as she can remember, PCSO Janelle Taylor has wanted a career with the police. Three years ago she got her wish when she joined the team at Chester-le-Street. “I can remember being at school and just wanting to join the police – I can’t put my finger on why, but just know that’s all I wanted to do,” said Janelle. “I was delighted when I became a PCSOvand one day would really like to become a PC. My current job gives me a lot of experience and insight into what that role would entail.” Janelle covers the areas of Garden Farm, Waldridge and Chester Moor. She said: “I have the opportunity to get to know and support the residents living in these areas and help those with any issues they feel unable to

deal with themselves, which is very rewarding.” In her capacity as a PCSO, Janelle is also supervisor for an enthusiastic group of volunteers who conduct Community Speed Watch in the Chester-le-Street area on a weekly basis. “They are a dedicated group who give their time freely and they are a pleasure to work with,” said Janelle. “They work hard to fulfil requests which come in from members of the public and councillors. Requests also come in from PACT (Police and Communities Together) meetings which are a good way for people to raise any issues.”

What’s on in the North East Lumiere Durham 2017 There’s no need to be afraid of the dark from 16th to 19th November, when the UK’s biggest light festival takes place on the streets of Durham for the fifth time. The event is once again the masterwork of one of the country’s leading arts producers, Artichoke, which has brought together the world’s most innovative artists and light designers for this spectacular four-night extravaganza. The city’s nocturnal landscape will literally light up with beautiful illuminations and projections, giving residents and visitors alike a real sense of celebration, and a new way to discover and appreciate Durham’s familiar and forgotten features and spaces. Travel information and road closures will be extensively advertised in the run-up to the event to ensure that as much traffic as possible is routed away from the city. A free ticketing system will be in effect for the festival’s busiest times, for the city centre or peninsula area only. For more information, visit www.lumiere-festival.com.

Since then, she’s released 22 solo albums - four of them being certified multi-Platinum, and nine Gold - in addition to being featured on seven cast recordings and racking up global hits such as “Memory” and “I Know Him So Well”. No one else of her generation has starred in more smash hit West End and Broadway musicals than Elaine Paige, who is also familiar to today’s listeners as the presenter of the hugely successful weekly BBC Radio 2 programme, Elaine Paige on Sunday, which celebrates the best of Broadway, Hollywood and the West End to the appreciation of more than 2.5 million listeners every week. For this very special occasion at Sage Gateshead, Elaine performs many of the hits that made her a global star, in addition to giving the Paige treatment to some of her other favourite songs. VIP packages are also available for the Wednesday 15th November concert. Tickets are priced between £37.60 and £80; book yours now at www.sagegateshead.com or by calling 0191 443 4661.

Blood Brothers at Sunderland Empire Few musicals in recent decades have developed quite the cult following that the Willy Russell-written Blood Brothers has. It tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who are separated at birth and subsequently grow up on ‘opposite sides of the tracks’ - one in a wealthy family, the other a poor one - only to meet again with fateful consequences. Blood Brothers was originally developed as a school play, debuting in Liverpool before being transferred to the West End in 1983. While its most recent West End run concluded in 2012 after more than 24 years, it continues to be a hit on tour. Tickets are available from £17.90 for performances running from Monday 27th November to Saturday 2nd December; visit www.atgtickets.com/venues/sunderland-empire to book.
