Our community alarm service helps give you peace of mind.
Care Connect supports vulnerable people of all ages, providing a monitoring and response service to people’s homes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering assistance and reassurance whenever it is needed. There is a charge for the service and this will be discussed upon enquiry. If you have a relative, neighbour or friend who is vulnerable or socially isolated, Care Connect could provide a vital service.
The service operates 24/7 so staff are always able to offer support and assistance, dispatch responders to someone’s home or contact the emergency services where necessary.

Peace of mind with Independence at home is very important, especially as we get older Care Connect is a trusted 24-hour emergency monitoring and response service provided by Durham County Council. A lifeline unit is plugged into the home telephone point. The customer will receive a personal alarm pendant that’s worn around the neck or on a wrist strap. If they ever need to raise the alarm, all they need to do is press that button and the service automatically knows who they are, where they live and will make sure the right help is sent to them.

Name for new County Durham history centre revealed… The name for a new history centre, which is being built in County Durham, has been revealed as “The Story at Mount Oswald”. The Story is currently under construction and is due to be open to the public in 2023. Mount Oswald Manor, which is a Grade II listed building, is the site for the project. It will be brought back into use through the introduction of high-quality, visually appealing extensions. The extension is designed to complement the existing building, as well as provide a secure future for more than five miles of county archives, which span over almost 900 years. This centre will also be the home to historic registration records, the historic environment record, local studies collections and the DLI collection. DLI written records and objects will be reunited for the first time since 1998. All About Culture The Story is a key backer in Durham’s bid to be named City of Culture 2025, as it will transform the way the history of County Durham is told, helping people to discover the past, celebrate the present and create the future of our city. 10 | IN&AROUND
Entry to the permanent and temporary exhibitions will be free. Each exhibition will tell the fascinating history of the county, which will be brought to life by often unheard voices and the lesser told narrative of the working people and communities who have shaped County Durham. Past, Present and Future The Story has been deemed a fitting name by Cllr Elizabeth Scott, as the history centre will help to create new stories, as well as sharing the old ones. This includes registering a birth, celebrating love stories through weddings and civil partnerships, and sharing tales of honour won in battle alongside the history of our towns and villages, our traditions, our culture and our homes. Visitor experience will be at the heart of the history centre, ensuring the residents of County Durham feel represented, understood and celebrated.

Marilyn Monroe Norma Jeane Mortenson, or as she is better known, Marilyn Monroe, was born on June 1st 1926 in Los Angeles California. During World War Two, Monroe worked in an aircraft factory and later married a colleague in 1942, though they divorced soon after the war ended. Throughout the 1950s, Monroe was publicly linked to an array of men, including Joe DiMaggio, whom she married in 1954 and subsequently divorced in 1955 and Arthur Miller, whom she married in 1956, divorcing in 1961. During the 1960’s, Monroe’s health and career began to decline. In 1962, she began filming the comedy “Something’s Got to Give” but consistently missed filming days due to illness. In May that year, she flew to New York City to attend a gala, where she famously sang Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy, with whom she was alleged to have had an affair. This was one of her final public appearances, before her death three months later. On the 5th of August, 1962, Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her bed by her housekeeper, Eunice Murray. Her death was ruled to have taken place on August 4th and was ruled a probably suicide by LAPD. To this day, Marilyn Monroe remains an American cultural icon. 12 | IN&AROUND

Platinum Jubilee Swimathon at Chester le Street Baths on the 6th July between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.
The aim is to raise money for several local charities,
Heel and Toes, Chester le Street's Women's Refuge, Josie's Dragonflies (that supports teenagers who are seriously ill)
Now comes the big ask, for any success we will need volunteer swimmers to do the actual work enter as an individual or team, get sponsored for money to provide the funds and turn up on the night. Without you a group of very senior citizens are going to be very lonely and rather silly Before hitting the water you will need to: Talk it over with the Boss, Group Leader, etc, Ask Parents to get permission, Get a Sponsorship form, Collect names and amounts they will donate to you . The Baths have said that in order to take part you must be able to swim 5 lengths of 25metres. Remember always set your own realistic targets of the number of lengths you are going to swim comfortably, we are not aiming for personal bests - it's not the Olympics. Bring your sponsor forms to be signed. Finally, and last but not least, get people to come and support you, others might want act as Marshals and Lane Counters. County Durham Care and Support (CDCS), Durham County Council’s in-house care provider, is currently looking to employ more care workers to deliver it’s Extra Care scheme. Those with elderly friends and relatives will understand the value they place on independence. Extra Care independent living apartments are designed to meet the needs of older people who want to continue to maintain an independent lifestyle with 24-hour care available on site. There are seven such schemes throughout County Durham where the care staff are employed directly by CDCS. Those applying for positions don’t need any qualifications to get started, just a caring personality and a willingness to gain any appropriate qualifications. For those who are recruited, training is provided on the job. There are also lots of opportunities to progress in a career in care, as employees gain qualifications and undertake additional training. Karen Vasey, team manager for CDCS, said: “There are many different roles available in the adult social care sector and within County Durham Care and Support we have supportive teams to assist employees with their work. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t have much experience and are just starting out or have worked in the industry for many years. The bid for City of Culture 2025 has been driven by Durham County Council, Durham University and Culture Durham, as well as a partnership of over 20 cultural organisations from across the county.
As of March this year, County Durham was one of only four places in the UK to be shortlisted for City of Culture 2025. Winning the coveted title would bring at least 2,500 jobs to the county’s creative industries and an extra 200 creative enterprises in the county by 2029. A win will also attract 15 million visitors to the region, helping to bring in a visitor spend of £700 million and supporting a further 1,800 jobs in the tourism sector. Even after County Durham has to give up the title, the benefits we would reap would be felt for years to follow.

Chicken fajita drumsticks A really easy way to feed six people. Just put the chicken in a roasting tray with the spices and let the oven do the work. Wrap it up and you're good to go!

Ingredients 12 chicken drumsticks 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp ground cumin 4 garlic cloves 1 tbsp vegetable oil 6 large tortilla wraps
For the corn salad approx 200g tin sweetcorn, rinsed and drained 1 red pepper 2 spring onions half a lemon, juice only salt and pepper 40 | IN&AROUND

Directions
Step one... Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Tip the chicken into a large roasting tray and sprinkle over the spices. Lightly crush the garlic, leaving the skins on, and add to the tray with the chicken. Drizzle with the oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes, turning halfway through cooking, until the chicken is lightly charred on the outside and perfectly cooked inside.
Step two... While the chicken is cooking, make the salad.
Tip the sweetcorn into a bowl then finely chop the pepper (removing the seeds) and add to the bowl. Finely slice the spring onions then add to the bowl along with a squeeze of lemon juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Step three... Shred the chicken from the bone and then wrap in tortilla wraps with the salad.

Keighley I
completed a job in Keighley (pronounced Keethly) in West Yorkshire earlier than expected and had several hours to explore the town which I have visited several times before. I was free to wander until 1901 when my train left for Leeds. Then it was over the bridge to join a CrossCountry train to Durham, my TransPennine connection having been cancelled owing to a shortage of train drivers. No matter: all the money back under Delay Repay!
The station at Keighley is well located for visits. First, a walk north of the town for Cliffe Castle Museum and Park. This was originally the home of Victorian millionaire and textile manufacturer Henry Issac Butterfield. The house was completed in the 1880s and was a showpiece of international art and French decoration. Sir Bracewell Smith, then Lord Mayor of London, bought the Castle in the 1950s and turned the gardens into a grand public park and remodelled the Castle to be a free museum for the people of the district. Zero expenditure except for a voluntary donation. Walking back into town, one can admire the impressive war memorial, and in the corner of the park is a new memorial to Captain Sir Tom Moore, born in the town where he attended the Grammar School before joining the army. He was created a Freeman of the town even though he lived in Bedford in later life. I was unsure if the National Trust’s East Riddlesden Hall, a fine 17th century country Manor House, would be open, but

it was only five bus stops away (on the useful Shuttle 662 bus towards Bradford) from the station to find out. Now open Saturday to Wednesday, I discovered, there was a wedding party in full swing on the Thursday afternoon and it would have to wait for another time. As luck would have it I arrived back at Keighley ten minutes before the last round trip to Oxenhope on the heritage line, Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Being school holidays, it was Timetable A in operation, the most frequent, with both steam and diesel traction in use. Most heritage railways now use this system, shown on the photo with different time tables depending on likely demand and availability of volunteers. K&WVR has six separate timetables linked to a calendar of their operating season. I bought a ticket for £13.50 (concessions were available) and travelled the five mile length of the line, stopping at Oakworth station which became famous through the 1970 film The Railway Children. Do you remember at the end Jenny Agutter crying out “Daddy, my Daddy!”? Then on to Oxenhope for an ice cream and back calling at all six stations. Finally, only 100 yards from the station I found Keighley’s top rated Indian Restaurant, the Curry House. Whilst not particularly imaginative in name, the food, and accompanying Kingfisher beer, was first rate so from going in at 1745 to leaving ten minutes before my train, I was royally treated, which is why I fell asleep on the train to Leeds, and had to be woken up by the train conductor.

The Lost City stars Sandra Bullock as a best-selling romance-adventure author, Loretta Sage, who has lost her spark, spending her days fantasising about the exotic places that she brings to life in her novels. Whilst promoting her new book with the loveable frat boy cover model Alan, played by Channing Tatum, Loretta is kidnapped, leading to a bizarre adventure that was once only possible as a figment of her imagination. One of the highlights of this film has to be its all star cast, with supporting roles for Brad Pitt, Oscar Nuñez, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Patti Harrison, and a cameo from the hilarious Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang.

Unfortunately, what it makes up for in laughs and witty jokes, The Lost City lacks in drive and plot. Though it is, admittedly, quite a short film, it could probably have been condensed down to a TV movie, rather than a feature length film. The plot itself is quite predictable in places, which leaves the conclusion a tad anticlimactic.
Most importantly is the role of Daniel Radcliffe, who plays our ‘Big Bad’ of the film, Abigail Fairfax (it’s gender neutral, guys - he promises!). Far from his Harry Potter days, Radcliffe channels his inner Draco Malfoy, as he attempts to gain the unattainable love of his father, causing chaos and drama wherever he goes.
The same can be said for the romance at play during the film, which is an amalgamation of all the tropes in the book. Interestingly, though, it does riff off one of the biggest action tropes extremely well, in fact, turning it on its head to present us with a female knight in shining armour, and a male damsel in distress. Though it is played for comedic purposes rather than as a feminist statement, it is nevertheless a charming quirk of the film.
The script is packed full of witty one liners, slapstick humour, childish behaviour, and deadpan jokes. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, making fun of itself, and of the action-romance genre in general. Indeed, despite not being full of belly laughs, it will have you snorting and sniggering for the duration of the film.
Overall, The Lost City makes for lighthearted, easy watching, and is entertaining from start to finish. Though it won’t have you totally laughing out loud, it will definitely have you chuckling throughout, and singing along to the impeccable soundtrack. It is the perfect film for lazy, rainy days, guaranteed to make you feel lighter and brighter by the end.
