Homeless veterans initiative opens expanded accommodation centre in Durham MP for North Durham, Kevan Jones, was present at the official opening of the successfully expanded SHAID (Single Homeless: Action Initiative in Durham) St. Peter’s Court veterans project in Sacriston, County Durham. This exciting new part of the ongoing St. Peter’s Court project, in planning and development for two years, will provide extra permanent accommodation to homeless ex-service personnel in the North East of England. Built on the site of the Hollyacre Centre, a 40-bedsit care home purchased by SHAID in 2017, the project has been funded by a number of national and local agencies, plus staff members and individuals. Terry Deary, of Horrible Histories fame and the author of more than 200 books, was one of the many key contributors to the project that began in 2011, and is an official patron of SHAID. ‘Delight’ at official opening SHAID manager Tony Hammond said: “We take former Army, Navy and RAF personnel from all over the country, and all over the world, who are in urgent need of accommodation, and I’m delighted that we’re now officially open.” “We have 15 self-contained flats for individuals and one

family unit and we already have two veterans living at St Peter’s Court.” Within the new family unit is the new Nathan Cuthbertson Suite, named after the 19-year-old Private who was killed in Afghanistan in June 2008. His parents, Tom and Carla, have continuously helped to raise money for the veterans project and other worthy causes, with annual charity bike rides organised in their son’s name. Kevan Jones MP, alongside trustee Edna Hunter MBE, was present for the official opening of the SHAID St. Peter’s Court veterans project eight years ago. Since 4th November 2011, the project has been at full capacity – hence the delight in its successful expansion this year. Mr Hammond added: “Kevan has been a huge supporter of SHAID for the past eight years and we’ve also received support and funding from Santander and Grundfos.” A strong roll call of supporters Other agencies that have supported the project along the way, and which have been commended by SHAID for their ongoing support, include: Sir James Knott Trust, ABF Soldiers Charity, Durham University staff members, Hanro Group staff members, Durham Army Reserve Unit Soldiers, The Royal British Legion, Land Aid, Durham County Council AAP, Libor Fund, Sunderland / Durham SAFC Foundation of Light young people and staff, RAF Benevolent Fund, Armed Forces Covenant, Screw Fix, Durham and Sunderland Free Masons, Grand Conclave Order of the Secret Monitor Benevolent Fund, Sport of England £10,000 towards Bike Scheme, Newcastle Toon Legends, Sport England, Catherine Cookson Trust, The Beatrice Laing Trust.

North Durham MP supports Remembrance Day One of the key events in November is Remembrance Sunday, and I know that people across the area will be taking part in a range of commemorative activities. Over the last few years, the hundredth anniversary of the First World War has been marked with a series of significant projects, and I have been struck by the engagement of young and old alike. Chester le Street has a fine War memorial at the heart of our town, and the Remembrance Parade is always an extremely well-attended event. My constituency office is based in the Fulforth Centre in Sacriston, and in the entrance to the building is a beautiful mahogany war memorial. The plaque lists 122 names of the fallen from this one community alone, and their sacrifice was remembered last year with a moving ceremony where crosses were placed in the community garden – one for each of

12 | IN&AROUND

those listed, with some additional crosses for others whose name might have been missed off for some reason. I believe that it is fitting that we remember the fallen, but also vital that we provide the right support to those currently serving in the Armed Forces, and those who have left the services. As a former Defence Minister, the welfare of veterans is an issue that is extremely close to my heart. In October I was pleased to open a new accommodation block at St Peter’s Court in my constituency, providing housing and support to those who have served our country. I was privileged to speak in the Centenary of the Armistice debate in Parliament last November and finished my remarks by saying that remembrance is important not just in remembering the sacrifices made by individuals, but also in ensuring that we all learn the lessons of the past as we face an uncertain future.

Auckland Castle reopens its historical doors as conservation project is completed Following conservation work made possible by a £12.4 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Auckland Castle will be open to visitors again from Sunday 3rd November. Formerly home to the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham – some of the most prominent characters in British history – the castle holds many fascinating, but up-to-now largely untold stories within its astounding 900-year-old walls. A long-awaited reopening Visitors to Auckland Castle can now walk in the footsteps of the Bishops and experience how these influential figures changed local and national history. They will encounter some of the most important and decisive moments in the Castle’s history, and uncover the stories and personalities of its key residents. Clare Baron, Head of Exhibitions and Interpretation at Auckland Castle, said: “We are delighted to open Auckland Castle up to the public, allowing visitors to learn about the remarkable history of this 800-year-old building, and discover the lives of its formidable residents the Prince Bishops.

“Thanks to extensive conservation work and research, the Castle and its fascinating story is now accessible to everyone.” Making Bishop Auckland even more of a draw for visitors Auckland Castle is one of seven local venues that make up The Auckland Project, which brings culture and history to visitors from all over the world – with the vision of revitalising the surrounding region. Inspired by the Castle, paintings and rich history of Bishop Auckland, this vision

has now grown into an attraction encompassing art, history, nature, faith and food. During a three-year period of conservation, the Castle’s historic State Rooms have been sensitively returned to their original Georgian Gothic splendour, while the private apartments of the Bishops are being opened to visitors for the first time, offering an insight into the public and private lives of these powerful men, and taking visitors on a journey through history. Interpretation within the apartments will be delivered through a range of interactive media, including soundscapes, animations and audio-visual displays bringing the stories of Auckland Castle to life. “An important milestone” David Maddan, Chief Executive Officer of The Auckland Project, said: “The opening of Auckland Castle is an important milestone in the development of The Auckland Project as a visitor destination.”

“The Castle is at the centrepiece of our offer, bringing together history, art and faith for a contemporary audience. The Auckland Project also aims to continue the Bishops’ commitment to and engagement with their local community, providing ongoing opportunities for the people of Bishop Auckland.” Tickets for Auckland Castle can be booked via www.theaucklandproject.org, by visiting Auckland Tower at Bishop Auckland Market Place, or by calling 01388 743797. Entry is £10 per adult, £8 for concessions and £3 per child under the age of 16.

Places to go...

Racing at My friend Andy Bartlett, who, before he started the GO ROAM app, was a racing jockey suggested we went to Pontefract races one day, as it was a course I had never been to. In the event, he was unable to go on the date agreed, but I had arranged my accommodation coming back from London at the Premier Inn Doncaster, and train travel so I decided to stick to the arrangements and take advantage of the £11.30 advance fare from Pontefract to Chester-le-Street which was less than a quarter of the fare on the day. I even had a table of four to myself on a class 185 TransPennine train from Leeds back home, and a pleasant meal between trains on the south side of Leeds station using the platform 16 exit. Pontefract has three railway stations – Monkhill and Baghill, but Tanshelf is closest to the racecourse served from both Wakefield and Leeds. It’s only a ten minute walk across the park and I collected my Premier badge (I had been in a Premier Inn the previous night after all) and it was no problem to leave my baggage in the Raceday office. I had booked in advance a meal voucher and a tour behind the scenes. I was amazed to find that no-one else had booked the tour. So I had a one-to-one with a former female jockey who was also the presenter on the PA based in the winner’s enclosure. I was even allowed in the stewards’ office and jockeys’ changing

room and their tea room too. After lunch, at which I made my selection for the toteplacepot from the programme (£3), I went to consult the prices of the on course bookies. Pontefract has three separate enclosures or areas. Starting at the winning post and moving down the course, they are the Premier (£25 per person), the Grandstand and Paddock (£17) and the Picnic which is only £6 through the turnstiles. Even this more basic area had plenty of undercover seating, a bar, and catering outlets and two brave bookies located separately from the main betting ring. I made the acquaintance of Mark Ryan, the Betting Ring Manager, who explained how it was that in one race most of the bookies declined to take each way bets and just offered Win Only.

another third at 33-1, but I had not backed either, nor indeed any winners at all, but it was a very friendly course, close to the station, pleasant traditional architecture, and it only rained for a few minutes all afternoon. I have resolved to find out what happened to the “Back a Winner by Train” promotion which has not surfaced for a few years, despite its reduced price entry and discount placepot being very popular with punters. Racing starts next season at Pontefract on Tuesday 7th April. Redcar races is also close to Redcar Central station.

Durham University students recreate Lord of the Flies on stage Last month, students from Durham University took their audience on a desert island adventure with a chilling twist – dramatically converting William Golding’s 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies, to the stage at the Gala Theatre. Directed by Annie Rigby of Newcastle-based Unfolding Theatre, and designed by experienced theatre designer Andrew Stephenson, this dramatic production explored the dark side of humanity, as a group of schoolchildren became stranded on a desert island. Annie, who also directed the Durham Hymns at the Gala Theatre last November, said: “It’s extraordinary to direct a piece that speaks so powerfully about the fragility of democracy during this unsettled political period.

“What is extraordinary is the talent and commitment of the acting company. I am really excited to share their moving and powerful performances with audiences.” A convincing recreation of a modern classic As in the original novel, the children’s simultaneously positive and negative attempts to govern themselves soon descended into savagery, with terrifying consequences. First published in 1954, Lord of the Flies is now recognised as a modern classic and is regularly featured on the GCSE English syllabus. The Gala production will be based on a stage adaptation by Nigel Williams. For the Gala, having access to Durham Student Theatre’s talented ensemble of young actors meant they could 20 | IN&AROUND

convincingly portray Golding’s school-age characters; for the 10 members of the cast, it was an incredible opportunity to star in a professional production.

“We are hoping this will be the first of many collaboration projects” Lord of the Flies marks the first time the Durham County Council venue has co-produced a show with Durham University Student Theatre, and the collaboration has proved to be fruitful for both sides involved. In recent years, the Gala has developed a reputation for producing high-quality productions, with plays such as Two, Teechers and Educating Rita showcasing the rich creative talent that flourishes in the region. Kate Barton, head of student theatre at Durham University, said: “Working with Annie and the whole Gala team has been incredibly exciting for our students as it gives them the opportunity to learn from professionals and perform in a great community venue. We are hoping this will be the first of many collaboration projects.” IN&AROUND contributor Simon Trelfa was invited to attend an evening production of the play, and was impressed by the ability of the young actors to tell the complex story in a simple, but profound way. He said: “The overall performance was mesmerising, and immersive enough to forget its relevance in the modern day right up to the compelling climax of the play. The energy of the cast was relentless from start to finish.”

How long has Ambron Radio been broadcasting, and how did you start out? Ambron Radio has been broadcasting for just over a year, and it all began as a hobby set up by the station manager, Paddy McGough. What can listeners expect when they tune in to the station? Do you invite the listeners to help shape the output of the station, and how can they get involved? We most certainly do. From the shows being broadcast down to how our website looks. Give a Gift for

Christmas

Once again for 2019 the Neighbourhood Policing team at Chester-Le-Street are running a Give a gift appeal from Monday 18th November to Friday 20th December 2019. We plan to have two Christmas present boxes outside the NPT office in Chester-Le-Street for you to give a present be it male or female and place it in the appropriate coloured gift box. You can of course wrap it yourself if you prefer in a suitable colour wrapping paper and place in the relevant gift box, otherwise we will wrap it for you. We have selected a Residential care home (Picktree Court) in the town centre and a female only residence establishment in Chester-Le-Street and plan to give the Christmas gifts to them on Friday 20th December 2019 @2pm. Come and help Santa Claus deliver the presents if you can as I have been promised, mince pies and a sing along with the residents.

In conversation with...

Amanda Berry

Unmissable insight from the CEO of The Bafta Awards How do you feel your northern English background has influenced and shaped your career? I remember being nervous about approaching my lecturer at Newcastle about my decision to remain in London after my second year placement, but they were totally supportive of my decision and recognised I had found an industry that I wanted to work in. I remain eternally grateful for the support of Newcastle Polytechnic; their reassurance and understanding was critical at that stage. My time there also confirmed that you only get out as much as you put in, so the extracurricular activities at the Poly I immersed myself in taught me about managing people and developing relationships. I also recall being supported by the Poly to actively explore new things and learn more about who I was and what I could achieve. Those experiences are very much part of who I am today. You have been credited with turning around the Academy’s fortunes since becoming Chief Executive in December 2000. I was brought in to make change. The organisation had struggled financially, so it was all about survival – delivering what it had to deliver but doing it at absolute minimum cost: with a very small staff and a very small budget. I believed that by introducing the right commercial partners into the Academy, they could help us develop and grow. Now we work with 70-plus commercial partners, everyone from EE, the title sponsor for the Film Awards and our partner for 22 years, to Audi, which is the official car for the Academy – brands that share our values and understand what BAFTA stands for. It was also about looking at our priorities for the organisation. We are an educational charity, but at the turn of the millennium our events were primarily membership-focused. Over the last year we produced close to 250 events that were accessible to the members and public facing. Our events range from how to make a short film and how to market it, to lectures and masterclasses covering film, television and video games, as well as mentoring schemes. What would you regard as your proudest achievements at BAFTA? In early 2001 one of my dreams for BAFTA came true when we moved the Film Awards from April to February and therefore pre-Oscars. In that one move we became part of that window of time when the world focuses on film and we haven’t looked back. I received my OBE for services to the film industry in 2009, which was definitely one of the highlights of my career. It was a personal honour, but I saw it as a public recognition of what BAFTA, and our incredible team, had achieved.

24 | IN&AROUND

The kiss on the cheek from George Clooney for Argo, which he produced and won Best Film for at the Film Awards in 2013, was pretty amazing too! But what I am most proud of is the work we do to support the next generation of talent. We want to ensure that our industries are accessible to talented individuals from every background. I believe that talent is everywhere but opportunity is not, and we want to change that. You once thought you might have accomplished everything you’d wanted to do at BAFTA after three or four years, but you are still Chief Executive almost two decades later. What do you still wish to achieve in the role? BAFTA is such a great part of my life and something I am extremely passionate about! I thought I would probably do three or four years when I first started but although we have achieved so many of my dreams there is still so much to do. I have a truly great team of people and together we can make things happen. BAFTA is 75 years old in three years’ time and my ambition for that anniversary is that BAFTA is seen as the leading Academy in the world recognising and supporting new talent, and ensuring that talented individuals, regardless of their background, have every opportunity to succeed. And this is a global aspiration! We want to facilitate cross-cultural exchange, where events with broad global appeal and relevance can be simulcast and showcased around the world. Our masterclasses, informative Q&As and inspirational interviews, and many more unique events and activities will be made available globally on our open access websites, stimulating ideas and creativity across the world. How do you feel that BAFTA’s role has evolved or stayed the same during your time as Chief Executive? What would you regard as the Academy’s ‘mission statement’? Over the past ten years, BAFTA’s charitable remit has witnessed an ever closer focus on new talent, to ensure that individuals, regardless of their background, have the chance to succeed. Every year, close to 1,000 emerging practitioners are identified and given bespoke support by BAFTA. Many millions more are reached via our 250 educational events annually and extensive online content. Today, BAFTA’s role is a truly global one, with our expansion five years ago into Asia and success in achieving crosscultural exchange through a range of initiatives, including the introduction of a global scholarships programme. Our vision and mission statements reflect these developments. Vision: BAFTA’s vision is a world where everyone’s life is

culturally and creatively enriched through excellent work in film, games and television. Mission: Our mission is to bring the very best work in film, games and television to public attention, and support the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. We do this by identifying and celebrating excellence, discovering, inspiring and nurturing new talent, and enabling learning and creative collaboration. What advice would you give to those in the north of England who aspire to a film or TV career, but who fear it’s a closed shop that’s about “not what you know, but who you know?” The moving image plays a huge part in all our lives, feeding our minds and imaginations and helping our culture grow. The creative industries are also vitally important to the British economy; the film market on its own generates revenues in excess of £4bn. The film, television and games industries employ over 80,000 people in the UK, and there is a perception it is who you know in the industry rather than what you know that will get you a job – but I didn’t know anyone. I found a way in through an area that interested me and when I got in worked as hard as I could so they wanted to keep me on.

At BAFTA we believe in the amazing talent we’ve got here in Britain, waiting to be discovered. We have a mission to inspire, inform, nurture and develop talent, hand in hand with celebrating excellence at our Awards. This is what BAFTA’s about, helping people achieve their dreams, and helping them get to a place where they’ll be winning an award of their own. What qualities do you feel are needed for success in film or TV that are sometimes overlooked? I asked the youngest members of my staff what their advice would be and they said: • Take every opportunity – you never know where things might lead. • Don’t be scared of asking questions. • Seek out and spend time with like-minded people who share your interests. • Research the industry you are interested in, and write down exactly why you want to work in it. This helps you identify if it is something you really want to do. • Get practical experience wherever you can. y own personal motto is Believe and Achieve, Doubt and Live M Without.

Keep leaks and condensation at bay this winter with Findley With rumours of the worst winter in 30 years – or in some even more terrifying predictions, 100 years – set to hit our homes in the next few months, it’s fair to say that our windows will soon be closed more often than they’re open. However, as the temperature drops, the air inside a property slowly begins to hold less and less vapour, which is when condensation starts to build up. Cold surfaces like windows, glazing and even mirrors in kitchens and bathrooms are usually the most susceptible areas for a moisture build-up. Properties that struggle with condensation may have inadequate ventilation, particularly in the loft, as well as poor sealant around windows, and even damage to the roof itself or to the pointing of brickwork in the walls. Also, if you find condensation on the ceiling, it’s essential to eliminate the possibility of a leak. Whatever is causing the problem, it’s likely to continue throughout winter and be far worse by this time next year if left unchecked. Any moisture in the home can lead to mould, which is not only damaging to your property, but also severely detrimental to the health of people inside.

At Findley Roofing & Building, we offer a completely Free Roof Health Check to customers all over the North East. We can also assess the quality of your insulation and ventilation in the roof space, and ensure your brickwork isn’t leading to additional problems inside the home. To keep your home cosy, free from excess condensation and protected from the harsh winter to come, give our team a call on 0191 417 3422 or get in touch via our website www.findleyroofing.co.uk.

Dehumidifiers, temperature control and making sure air can circulate throughout the property can all help to reduce condensation in the home. If the problem persists, though, it’s worth getting a professional opinion on how to deal with it.

FILM REVIEW:

JOKER shy about promoting the film as ‘standalone’, encouraging fans to understand that the 2019 Joker movie has no narrative connection to the rest of the DC Universe. Personally, I was pleased by this. I am not a fan, nor am I really familiar with any of the ‘superhero’ films (I know, I know, that’s unforgivable, right?) so I was thrilled at the Dark. Interesting… Disappointing. prospect of being a part of something that had generated As the star character in this 2019 movie was plucked straight so much hype – without having to worry if anything was out of the widely-recognised DC Comic franchise, this film going to be lost on me. It turns out that the Joker does naturally had monumental footsteps to follow. Did it live up have a few references to the world of Batman (the asylum is to the promise that it so desperately needed to? Uh, well… named ‘Arkham’ and a mini-version of Bruce Wayne makes a couple of appearances), but nothing that confused me. An origin-movie set in the early 1980s, we follow Arthur Fleck’s (Joaquin Phoenix) journey as an isolated, bullied It is in relation to this idea, however, that leaves me to failure who is repeatedly kicked to the curb – metaphorically believe that this take on the infamous Joker was just by society, and even physically at one point by a group of unsatisfying. Arthur Fleck has a compelling backstory that children. We watch, on the edge of our seats, as he slowly you can follow with ease, even if uncomfortable at times, and painfully descends into a madness that transforms him but overall the film lacked any pace or punch. You don’t have to be a die-hard DC Comics fan to know that the Joker into a violent murderer; The Joker is born. is a psychotic supervillain, and so I expected this movie to This film had a talented crew behind it, which raised initial push the boundaries a lot more aggressively than it did. expectations even higher. Todd Phillips (The Hangover Trilogy) directed and produced the film, alongside Bradley For a film that’s over 2 hours long, we see only a few Cooper (American Sniper) and Emily Tillinger Koskoff (The minutes of anything that’s worthy of a gasp - which is rather Wolf of Wall Street). Joaquin Phoenix’s acting was on point frustrating. Despite it being an origin-film, naturally you’d throughout, and it was clear that a lot of (no doubt mentally expect to see the Joker for a lot longer than you do, if exhausting) work went into preparing for the role, but you’re going to see a movie about the Joker, right? unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to take this film from mediocre to outstanding. If I was to sum up the Joker in 3 words?

Overall, it was interesting in a somewhat warped way, almost causing you to feel a little guilty for enjoying the film at its darkest points. Both Warner and DC Comics weren’t 32 | IN&AROUND

Funding secured at last to upgrade ageing Shotley Bridge Hospital NHS bosses have given the go-ahead to plans to replace an ageing hospital, after a “funding source” was finally identified for the changes. It had been feared that cash would not be available to revamp Shotley Bridge Hospital, which presently has a maintenance backlog worth approximately £2 million. However, the North Durham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has since confirmed that it has been given permission by the Department of Health and Social Care to proceed with the development of its proposals for the site. ‘Delight’ at step forward for overhaul The CCG’s head of engagement, commissioning and development, Rachel Rooney, commented: “The CCG’s plans to consult on services provided at Shotley Bridge remain in place and we are delighted progress has been made. “We are working closely with County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, NHS England, NHS Property Services and the Department of Health and Social Care to understand how we will move ahead with business case development and assurance.”

36 | IN&AROUND

The announcement follows months of uncertainty as to whether the project was viable, after regional health chiefs were told that they might not be handed the £17 million they had expected to receive for the scheme. Government rules required the CCG to have funding in place before it would be permitted to begin consulting with the public on the future of services at the hospital. But a business case for the proposals will now be put together, after care bosses announced that they finally had an “identified funding source”. “The people of the area deserve high-quality hospital facilities” Lucy Hovvels, the Durham County Councillor who also chairs the Shotley Bridge Hospital Reference Group, said: “The people of the area deserve highquality hospital facilities and this investment will help to improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities. “A great deal of work has been put into determining the best way to secure the future of the hospital and I know this is an issue that residents feel incredibly strongly about.”

Inspirational Lyla honoured for cheering up other sick children A six-year-old girl who sends certificates to ill children all over the world in an effort to cheer them up has received a national award. The selfless actions of Lyla O’Donovan, from Ushaw Moor near Durham, are despite herself having spent half of her life in and out of hospital since being diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of three. However, the youngster – who is a pupil of Bearpark Primary School – is determined to make other unwell children smile by sending them certificates that she creates with her sister, Lilley. “She is the bravest child I know”

Since her diagnosis three years ago, Lyla has had to undergo eight operations and deal with various complications, including meningitis, hydrocephalus and having a VP shunt implanted.

Now, Lyla has won the inspirational child category at the WellChild Awards, run by the national charity for seriously ill children, after being selected from hundreds of nominations.

Meanwhile, the family – including Lyla’s five siblings – have spent much of this year making memories, in case she requires a potentially life-threatening operation.

Her mum, Kirsty O’Donovan, commented: “For Lyla, making other children happy is the best medicine.

Earlier this year, she was a bridesmaid for her parents’ vow renewal ceremony, and she has also raised money for charity by recording her favourite song from the film Frozen.

“She is so proud of herself when she sees a picture of another child smiling as they open a certificate from her. She is the bravest child I know and takes everything in her stride. We are so proud that she has been recognised with this WellChild Award.” A very special award for a very special child As a consequence of her claiming the award, Lyla was invited to be one of the guests of honour at a ceremony at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel last month. The awards celebrate the courage of children coping with serious illnesses, while also recognising the dedication of the professionals who assist them and their families.

44 | IN&AROUND

“A tremendous challenge to select winners” Director of programmes at WellChild, Tara Parker, said: “It is a tremendous challenge to select winners from the many, many truly amazing nominations we receive from all over the country.

“All the panel members are moved by the bravery of the children, the stories of selfless care and support and the dedication of the doctors, nurses, teachers, brothers and sisters who make a great difference to the lives of seriously ill children and young people. “Lyla truly deserves to be the winner of this award.”
