Welcome to the July issue of IN&AROUND! As these words are being typed, the country is preparing to throw off the last of its lockdown restrictions, imbuing us with renewed optimism. So, what are you planning for the post-COVID era? You could read about the history of the Flying Scotsman – the world-famous locomotive which recently passed through County Durham – on page 14. Meanwhile, you might have, ahem, “spotted” Cruella in cinemas – our copywriter Gavin Lenaghan reviews the delightfully dark origin story of the Dalmatian-hating Disney villain on page 42. This month’s issue is packed with feel-good content – and we’ll return with even more in August!

Durham city preparing to hold its first Fringe Festival this summer Shortly after England lockdown restrictions are due to be lifted, the city of Durham is set to celebrate in style with its first Fringe Festival. The new festival will be held over five days from July 28th to August 1st, and host an exciting mix of cultural events – including comedy, drama and dance. Overall, Durham Fringe Festival will comprise over 30 different shows – with most, at the time of writing, yet to be announced. However, names recently confirmed to make an appearance include stand-up comic Jake Donaldson and Yorkshire-based dancer Erica Mulkern. Fringe events will take place at various venues around the city – including Fabio’s Bar, the City Theatre, the Assembly Rooms Theatre and the gardens of St Chad’s College. The festival has come together on the initiative of local paediatrician Stephen Cronin and three of his friends who live or work in Durham. The group have big plans for the festival’s future, having set up a Community Interest Company (CIC) to establish the Fringe as a recurring event for years to come. The CIC has worked with various local partners to help bring the debut Fringe to fruition – with Durham BID, Durham Markets, the University Theatre and Durham School having all contributed generously to the project. One of the Fringe’s Directors and a former Deputy Mayor of Durham, Bill Moir, revealed: “After months of lockdown we all thought it would be great to get together and enjoy some home-grown entertainment and give trade in the city a boost, too.” The Fringe itself will begin with pop-up entertainment in Durham Market Place on Monday 31st May, when Youth Connections Theatre Company are set to stage two choral sets at 1pm and 2pm. The Durham Fringe Festival organisers took inspiration from festivals in Edinburgh, Brighton

and Adelaide as Durham’s own take on the Fringe scene was prepared. Nonetheless, for its first outing, the Durham Fringe Festival will be a relatively small-scale affair held across just four main venues each with a capacity for 70 to 170 seats. There will be small stages for magic and stand-up comedy, while larger stages have been reserved for plays and musicals. On its website, the Durham Fringe Festival CIC calls itself “a grassroots organisation made up of local people, working alongside local businesses, looking to grow a collective dream.” The CIC adds that, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new festival “hopes to bring vibrancy back to our beautiful city. We aim to once again celebrate the amazing talent in our communities, welcome new visitors and support our local hospitality industry.” However, festival bosses are also looking to recruit volunteers to various areas of responsibility – including publicity, sales, guides and venue hosting. If you are interested in joining the volunteering team, visit durhamfringe.co.uk to learn more about the opportunities available and how you could apply for any specific unpaid roles.

Introducing… Craig Sewell, your ‘Local Bespoke Estate Agent’ If you’re looking for an estate agent who really knows the industry, and who will go to any lengths necessary to ensure ultimate customer satisfaction, I’m the man you need to call. With a fantastic track record in the management of property valuing, and selling homes across multiple locations, I’m confident that you’ll not find any other estate agent better suited to your requirements. Why I’m the best estate agent for your individual requirements Having recently branched out, I am now an affiliate of the UK’s largest hybrid agent, with a focus on Chester-leStreet, Washington, and the surrounding areas – my local communities. Nothing means more to me than being able to deliver a first-class service to the areas that have made me who I am today. In setting up my own agency, I have the freedom and the authority to manage it the way I consider most fitting – with care, a real focus on the individual, and a personal service that all customers deserve. My professional approach, continued support, and honest advice lie at the heart of my truly bespoke service.

Craig Sewell

If you are looking for someone with bundles of property experience to help you achieve the smoothest of journeys, guiding you through the process with great advice and a friendly, honest approach, look no further than ‘Your Local Bespoke Estate Agent’. I will look after the process from start to finish – from valuing your property and negotiating your offer, right through to completion/moving day! What do I do away from the housing market? Alongside my passion for property, I also enjoy spending time with my family. As I currently live in Rickleton Village and my littlies attend Newker Primary, I have a good understanding of the Chester-le-Street and Washington property markets. I grew up in Northumberland and have always loved the Tyne Valley, and so I feel very lucky to live in the beautiful North East England region. I have a background in Surveying, Contract Law and Finance, all of which I can apply to my current business. Guiding you step by step, I will put you at the heart of the property transaction process. Yes, you are selling your property and potentially your home, but you and your family are the focus. Ensuring the process is easy, understandable, and as stress-free as possible is why I like to consider a ‘personal approach’ a necessity.

See the locomotive: the Flying Scotsman Many big names have visited Chester-le-Street, including global popstar Rihanna and Vera actress Brenda Blethyn in the last few years alone. In June, another big name was added to the list: the world’s most famous locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, which passed through the town. The train was on one of the various tours it had undertaken since being returned to service in 2016 after a decade-long restoration costing £4.5 million. However, this was just another in the lengthy series of overhauls the locomotive has received since originally being built in 1923. The Flying Scotsman was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and assembled at Doncaster Works as the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER)’s first locomotive. It appeared at the British Empire Exhibition in London the following year, when the Flying Scotsman was also given its now-iconic name – after the regular London-to-Edinburgh rail service which continues running to this day. In 1934, Scotsman became the first locomotive in the UK officially confirmed to have reached 100mph. After being retired by British Rail – a successor company of LNER – in 1963, Scotsman was owned by Alan Pegler, who toured it in the United States before Sir William McAlpine bought the locomotive in 1973. Today, Scotsman is owned by the National Railway Museum. If you missed the Flying Scotsman’s recent appearance in Chester-le-Street, you won’t have to wait long to see it again, as it is set to go on display at the Locomotion museum in Shildon from 25th July until 19th August 2021. The Locomotion website is locomotion.org.uk. 14 | IN&AROUND

Notable birthday: E. B. White If you’ve read Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web, you’ve read not only two of the best-loved children’s books ever written but also some of the most memorable literary work penned by American writer E. B. White, who was born 122 years ago this month – on 11th July 1899. White was born in Mount Vernon, New York to a family with creativity in its blood: his father Samuel Tilly White ran a piano firm, while his mother Jessie Hart White was the daughter of the Scottish-American painter William Hart. In 1921, White graduated with an arts degree from Cornell University, where he was nicknamed “Andy” after the educational institution’s cofounder Andrew Dickson White. E. B. White also served as editor of newspaper The Cornell Daily Sun during his studies. Over the next few years after graduating, White held a number of journalism posts – including at the United Press, the American Legion News Service and The Seattle Times. However, it wasn’t until 1925 that he was first published in The New Yorker, a magazine to which he subsequently contributed for nearly six decades. In the late 1930s, White started writing children’s fiction – eventually culminating in the 1945 publication of Stuart Little, a realistic but fantastical tale about a human boy who, according to the novel’s first chapter, “looked very much like a rat/mouse in every way”. Reviewing the book for The New York Times, literary critic Malcolm Cowley commented: “To say that Stuart Little is one of the best children’s books published this year is very modest praise for a writer of [White’s] talent.” His second children’s book, Charlotte’s Web, was published in 1952 and told of a barn spider named Charlotte who, upon learning that her livestock pig friend Wilbur is about to be slaughtered by the farmer, uses her web to write messages aimed at persuading the farmer to spare Wilbur’s life. Like White’s previous children’s book, Charlotte’s Web was widely praised and garnered its own positive review in The New York Times, with Eudora Welty declaring: “As a piece of work it is 16 | IN&AROUND

just about perfect, and just about magical in the way it is done.” In recent years, both books have also been adapted as live-action films. Stuart Little inspired a 1999 live-action film of the same name, with a computer-animated Stuart voiced by Michael J Fox – though the 2002 sequel more closely followed the book’s plot. The 2006 Charlotte’s Web movie similarly featured animated elements, with Julia Roberts voicing Charlotte. White’s third children’s novel, The Trumpet of the Swan, arrived in 1973 – and received an allanimated film treatment, with Reese Witherspoon and Mary Steenburgen among the voice-acting cast. White picked up many accolades over the years, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963 and, seven years later, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in recognition of his “substantial and lasting contributions to children’s literature.” White died on 1st October 1985 at his farm home in Maine.

Enjoy Your conservatory all year round Conservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know that, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, the first to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory, and during the summer it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use into a room that you can enjoy all year round because the temperature is comfortable and constant, you will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With no mess! We retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches perfectly with the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight, therefore no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is now.

The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste, and less time to install saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately. We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein its use is not dictated by the external weather conditions, it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a 5 year warranty and we guarantee that you will be amazed with both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and should you require it we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs. Please give us a call today to start the ball rolling to making full use of your Conservatory!

Places to go...

Alnwick Plus Bus T

he weather forecast was not very promising, with rain expected and precious few places to shelter in the last stages of lockdown. At Newcastle, I boarded the 0933 Cross Country train, next stop Alnmouth for Alnwick. I added a PlusBus ticket to my off peak day return to give unlimited bus travel through to Alnwick, Warkworth and Amble, and, had I wanted it, to Boulmer and Longhoughton too, all for just £3 extra on top of my rail fare. The train arrived at Alnmouth on time 24 minutes later, a journey that the AA reckoned would take 46 minutes in a car. The welcoming coffee trailer was there and I walked up to station access road to await the Arriva bus X20 to Alnwick. There I explored the streets on market day, finding the Dirty Bottles pub at 32 Narrowgate now turned into a restaurant, but still with the 300 year old bottles in the window inviting a nasty end to anybody who touched them. I went to see the entrance to the Castle and noted that the Bailiffgate Museum was due to open on 22nd May. My timed entry to Alnwick Garden was at 1155. I think in practice I could have been admitted much earlier (or later), because although the entrance area and café were busy, that was just people sheltering from the rain and the gardens themselves were very quiet. I was very kindly allowed to eat my own food in the seating area outside the café, and was enchanted by some tiny ducklings which passed through my legs with their mother duck keeping a watchful

eye for any spare morsels. The Alnwick Garden is not huge, and pleasant to walk around with an umbrella. The poison garden, which opened in 2005, was particularly interesting since every plant could kill you. The Grand Cascade was impressive, the Rose Garden fragrant and the Bamboo Labyrinth was quite disorientating. At the time of my visit in early May, the Taihaku Cherry Blossom trees were at their best, the largest collection in the world with 329 trees and both pathways and swings. Mid-afternoon I took the bus down to Amble, and had a late lunch under canvas in a pub called the Wellwood Arms which had a particularly appealing attribute: it was open for hot food. I took a walk around the Marina and harbour which was interesting. Unfortunately the Marina Arms, which ceased being a pub a few years ago, and was turned into a vintage emporium, has now been demolished to make way for new housing. The old building was piled high awaiting removal. The bus returned to Alnwick via Warkworth with its fine English Heritage castle. Once back in Alnwick around 1700 I holed up inside Barter Books which is based inside the former railway station, until closing time. Grand though it was, the short branch line closed in 1968 leaving the smaller station at Alnmouth to take the traffic. Barter Books opened in 1991, and is an Alnwick institution, and has a variety of seating options to enjoy reading a book, which I did until 1800. It was in 2000 that

they discovered the original “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters which had been prepared for use in 1939, but never actually distributed. A visit to a turf accountant filled the time before my bus back to Alnmouth for the 1946 train which is one of only two all stations trains south to Newcastle, in the company only of a cyclist who had ridden from Devon to Edinburgh who was staying overnight in Widdrington.

Parrot Fun

Parrots are naturally inquisitive, intelligence and destructive birds! They need the same stimulation and play as a four year old toddler! They also have short memories – it is a good idea to change the toys in their cage every week – thus allowing them to have a constant supply of ‘new’ toys while only having to have 12 or so. There are five different kinds of toys we recommend for parrots: 1. Climbing toys – chains, ladders and swings are good here. Birds will also use the bars of the cage, or the living room curtains! 2. Chewing toys – non-toxic branches, wood and pasta are good. These toys will get destroyed and need replacing regularly. Some good ideas are to fill toilet rolls with paper, thread paper through the bars of the cage or make cardboard ‘skewers’ for shredding.

4. Puzzle toys – for mental stimulation. Parrot style music boxes and puzzle boxes which contain food when they complete tasks are good. 5. Foraging – more of a game: teach the bird 12 places around the house where their favourite food is hidden with a ‘foraging’ command. Then hide food in 6 out of 12 places and give the command – forcing your parrot to run around looking for the food. For a full husbandry assessment for your bird, including diet – and a full clinical exam – for £45, please give us a call on 0191 410 9674

FILM

REVIEW

How badly did fiction’s most notorious puppy-skinning fashion designer require an origin story? The answer, it seems, is more badly than we thought, at least when Cruella’s bad could turn out to be this good. A somewhat fresher effort than most recent live-action films from the Disney IP locker, this Craig Gillespie-directed crime comedy turns out to be a visual feast, as engaging to newcomers to the classic character as it is to fashion aficionados. It is also mercifully child-friendly, even if that comes at the expense of a deeper insight into the eventual supervillain’s nefarious activities in later life. Nope, no puppies – whether real or CGI – are shown as having come to harm in this movie. The deliciously vampy Cruella de Vil herself even has a fondness for dogs, save for a specific grudge towards Dalmatians for what quickly become obvious reasons. An impressive feat of world-building It’s not just the rare look at the unhinged character’s beginnings that help detach Cruella from what might have otherwise seemed the overfamiliar context of Dodie Smith’s original 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, but also the decision to set it amid the emerging punk atmosphere of 1970s London. 42 | IN&AROUND

But before even then, we are introduced to the inquisitive and mysterious schoolgirl Estella Miller (Tipper Seifert-Cleveland), complete with two-tone hair, whose calamitous experiences first getting ejected from school, and then at an ill-fated party hosted by the wealthy Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), eventually lead her to an orphaned existence in the capital. Fortunately, the enterprising child rapidly finds Jasper and Horace Badun (played in adulthood by Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser respectively), who go on to become her comrades-in-crime and… eventually, and improbably, fashion. Emma Stone captures the imagination as the maverick adult Estella who, via a characteristically chaotic stint as a cleaner at the famous Liberty department store, comes face-to-face with “The Baroness”. Fleshing out the ‘good’ of an iconic ‘baddie’ The narcissistic head of a legendary couture house turns out to possess a little something Estella wants – and not just a juggernaut position in the fashion firmament. To achieve her goals, Estella – now an apprentice of The Baroness – needs to call upon old contacts, as well as her own determination and inventiveness in a series of happenings that progressively upstage her employer. It is in the latter capacity that Estella embraces the identity of Cruella de Vil – hair, flair and dare. It’s a quest that almost costs the fiercely theatrical designer longstanding friendships, and even her life. However, it also makes for quite the ride, and a contribution to the Dalmatians legend that – for all of Cruella’s encroaching extremity and evil – gives us a background story audiences can believe in and emphasise with.

Cilla and the Swinging ‘60s

Ushaw: Historic House, Chapels & Gardens Former West End singer Sandy Smith will belt out several of Cilla Black’s hit songs – including “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and “You’re My World” – in this ‘60s-themed show, with many of the iconic decade’s other big-name music acts also represented in the setlist. So, if you’re a fan of Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark and the Beatles, too, don’t be afraid to book your £10 ticket from ushaw.org for this 9th July gig.

The Damned United

Gala Theatre, Durham Red Ladder Theatre Company is set to re-stage the story of Middlesbrough-born managerial legend Brian Clough’s ill-fated stint in charge of Leeds United in 1974. It was a club Clough had hated for years and continued to alienate even once at the Elland Road outfit’s helm – and this new theatrical take on the story kicks off (ahem) on 9th July, with tickets available from galadurham.co.uk.

New Durham County Council alliance considering axing controversial HQ plans Just weeks after taking control of Durham County Council, a Joint Alliance of Conservative, Liberal Democrat and independent councillors is set to review the former Labour-led administration’s divisive plans to build a new headquarters for the council at Freeman’s Place in Durham city. The new HQ building started taking shape on the site of the current Sands car park in late 2019 and is expected to be complete by autumn this year. However, a spanner was recently thrown into the works when the May local election saw Labour lose control of the council for the first time ever. After what he called “deeply disappointing” election results, in which his party fell 16 seats short of a majority, Coun Simon Henig decided to step down as leader of the council’s Labour group – and was replaced as council leader by the Lib Dems’ Amanda Hopgood, the authority’s first female leader. Now, her team is assessing the £50m HQ plans which have previously come under fire from opposition councillors and residents. These plans called for a new County Hall building a third of the current HQ’s size and with 700 work spaces that would accommodate about 1,000 staff.

for traffic trouble and fears that the work could compromise the city’s treasured World Heritage status. These objections ultimately did not deter planning bosses, who felt that the new office would bring “significant employment” to the city centre as well as encourage increased footfall and expenditure locally. Nonetheless, the Planning Inspector announced a public enquiry into the council’s application to de-register the Sands coach park, which had been earmarked for new car parking spaces. Shortly after becoming council leader, Hopgood revealed that her team would spend weeks reviewing all of the previous administration’s plans, including those for the new council HQ – and “nothing is off the table.” The recently departed Labour administration had intended to demolish the council’s existing headquarters at Aykley Heads and develop the site into a business park that could spur the creation of 4,000 jobs valued at up to £400m.

Around 1,850 staff work at the current County Hall, and it was thought that the 850 not moving to the new one would be relocated to four key offices in Crook, Meadowfield, Seaham and Spennymoor.

However, independent Coun John Shuttleworth, a member of the Joint Alliance, has now insisted: “The council offices in the current location are central and accessible to everybody. They paid £560,000 for people to tell them the building wasn’t fit for purpose, well I’m sitting in this building so it must be fit for purpose.

However, over 1,000 letters were sent objecting to the planning application before its eventual approval, with many concerns focused on the potential

“You would have to do something with it, lease it, rent it, it needs to be reviewed but it will hopefully take place over the coming weeks.”
