ISSUE 179 April 2020

READ ONLINE AT: www.inandaroundmag.co.uk

Welcome

to the April issue of IN&AROUND!

We may now be in the month of a certain Fools’ Day, but reality has lately been much weirder than any pranks your (responsibly socially distant) friends may be tempted to pull on you. This is reflected on page 46, where the space we would normally devote to ‘what’s on’ listings has instead been given over to tips to help to keep you and your loved ones safe, healthy and occupied during the Covid-19 pandemic. But we’ve also got some light relief for you elsewhere in this issue, including Craig Lenaghan’s verdict on the latest Pixar classic, Onward, on page 44. That’s it for now – keep flicking our pages and washing your hands throughout April, and we’ll see you again in May! Findley Roofing & Building proudly sponsors this month’s IN&AROUND. Don’t trust any other provider of high-quality roofing and building services as a homeowner in the North East of England or beyond. Call Findley’s professional and friendly team today, on 0191 417 3422, to ask for a competitive free quote – or simply log onto www.findleyroofing.co.uk.

Business Spotlight:

eso group

Who are ESO Group, how long have you been in business, and what are your primary goals?

In an extremely competitive industry the personal touch has been lost. As the company director I still involve myself with all clients within ESO Group and ESO Group is still in its first year of trading, although manage their circumstances accordingly. Every it is made up of staff who have been working in client has my direct contact details, which I am the industry for a substantial amount of time. Our available on 24/7, providing maximum support for main goal is to bring what experience we have when they need it most. across different sectors to one place, so a client has the best chance of receiving every saving option in How do you decide which renewable energy relation to energy costs. solutions will work for different clients? What sort of process do you go through when auditing a client’s energy or water usage circumstances? With regards to energy, we confirm the meter type and how much energy is being consumed and at what rate. This gives us a basic understanding of the current set up and is enough to indicate what products will reduce usage. If we have enough reason, we work with current and previous suppliers to collect past data usage. We calculate what has been consumed/spent against what savings could be produced via a new contract and/or renewable system implementation. Reports are then produced to present our findings. We are always keen to go on site visits to collect further data and discuss any options in more depth. However, how we complete the audit is always tailor-made to suit the client this is our biggest priority. Are there any particular business sectors you specialise in, or could any business contact ESO Group for energy saving solutions? We have a totally open door policy with any company. Businesses of all sizes are welcome to get in touch for assistance. We do manage a lot of Half Hourly meter and multi-site accounts due to the complexity of account management these clients require. Why do businesses choose to work with you, over your competitors? What does your service involve in terms of client account management?

A clients’ current and historic energy data usage is the leading factor in this. When we establish this level and for what fuel, we can conduct an investigation from there. A lot of work goes into recommending an energy solution as we leave no stone unturned. We accurately calculate a clients’ current energy spend against any solution that we recommend, so you can see first-hand the real potential savings. What are the most common things you come across that businesses in particular don’t understand about how to reduce energy costs? I would say the benefits of choosing the best time to extend contracts. Just because you are in a contract does not mean you should leave it to your renewal to get extension quotes. Tendering and extending early can be massively beneficial to protecting costs. A close second would be capacity charges. Half Hourly meter clients can be bamboozled by a lot of charges these meters carry, but tend not to be advised or educated on how these can affect expenditure. Managing and setting your capacity to suit the usage of the company can save businesses a lot of money over the term of the contract. Some clients are even being financially penalised on every bill for going above their KVA level, and are totally unaware that this can be avoided. CANNON Conservatories What are main benefits of owning a made-to-measure conservatory, over one that’s more ‘one size fits all’?

What are the common misconceptions you find in how people perceive conservatories today?

With properties being as different as they are now it is almost impossible to have two jobs the same. Having a customised conservatory or orangery means every detail of it suits you, your property, your budget and your needs.

People underestimate the number of products available today, all giving a superior finish to modern styles. Customers are now able to incorporate such things as bi-fold doors, tiled roofs and skypods which make each job so personal and matched to their own style and that of their existing property. Depending on the job, they are usually quicker to install than people often think.

How do you help a homeowner decide which kind of conservatory will suit their property and personal requirements? Homeowners usually have a rough idea of what kind of conservatory they are wanting but spending time with them is the key to finding the perfect solution. We thoroughly discuss their ideas, what they want to use the room for, colour schemes etc and I can then show them examples of other properties with similar home improvements. Their initial thoughts aren’t always what they finally decide upon! What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in conservatories since you went into business in 1990? One of the most significant changes has to be the improvements in the energy saving glass meaning the rooms can be used all year round. Not to mention much higher demand for more orangeries, extensions and the vast array of colours for frames.

What are the most unusual purposes you’ve found people using a conservatory for? We installed one conservatory for a customer who wanted a pond in it so that their fish could swim between inside the conservatory and the outside! Otherwise our customers use their conservatories for all sorts, ranging from the usual extension of the kitchen/dining areas to gyms, games rooms, offices and personal bars!

Fairview Windows

“When should a homeowner start thinking about replacing a window or door?” Apart from obvious signs, like leaking or warping, there’s lots to look for. If you start hearing more noise from outside, or can feel a draught, even when they’re closed, it’s time to replace. Equally, if the inside of the units are misted up or difficult to open, close and lock, they’re at the end of their lifespan. One thing often overlooked is if you have older, internally-glazed windows. If the beading holding the glass in place is on the outside, it can be a security risk. It’s easy for someone to pop the beading and remove the glass to gain access – definitely time to replace. “What are the easiest-to-overlook ways of lowering energy costs simply with windows and doors?” Look for A rated argon filled double glazing, as argon is a better insulator than air. New double glazing can be “Low E”, which means it lets in light and heat but reflects heat from inside back into the room. This can actually reduce heat loss by a further 20%. “Your windows and doors are manufactured locally what are the benefits of this for your customers?” Our customers are welcome to visit our showroom and factory and see us working. But the biggest benefit is the after care we can offer. Being local, if customers encounter

any issues with our products we can be straight there to put it right - no waiting around or trying to contact manufacturers far away. As well as a FENSA certificate and a 10 year insurance backed guarantee, we can also offer the peace of mind of knowing we’re on the doorstep. “What would you consider to be the largest unfounded myths about uPVC doors?” That they only come in white, and that they are old fashioned. We’ve recently seen a big increase in demand for coloured uPVC doors, in shades such as Anthracite Grey, Black and Chartwell Green. There are some really modern styles available now that rival composite doors for both looks and performance, and they typically cost less. “What do you do to minimise disruption when installing a new window or door?” We always work with the client to find a day and time that suits them.We don’t employ subcontractors – our fitters are employed by us and represent the Fairview Windows name. We take care to ensure the mess is minimal and most importantly we remove all waste and old products, and clean up afterwards. The tidiness and consideration shown by our fitters has been commented on so many times by happy customers!

Refurbished, rejuvenated and remarkably good Ever since it reopened its historical doors and arches to diners in February, I’d been yearning to see what delights awaited in Lumley Castle’s all-new Knights Restaurant. Along with the refurbishment of the library bar and a number of bedrooms, the new-look Lumley Castle has spent several months on quiet, dedicated transformation, including adding several notable new faces to its personnel. Gordon Cartwright, with a solid CV of five-star hotel experience, is the new General Manager, while Executive Head Chef, Craig Sherrington – who helped The Capitol Hotel to its second Michelin Star – was tasked with creating a new menu. So, what’s the result? Guided through the exquisite new interior, a contemporary twist on the Castle’s medieval roots, we began the evening with a wonderful taste of the original cuisine to come. A side dish of bread and whipped butter (which sounds simple enough, in essence) was served with a small pile of optional rock salt and a shot glass of tomato water. The small, perfectly-formed loaves and light, creamy butter (with a sprinkle of rock salt added) blended exquisitely with the tomato water – combining to create a palette cleanser that set up the senses perfectly for the evening.

24 | IN&AROUND

And this, for me, encapsulated what the new menu was all about; understated initially, but with a luxuriously appealing twist to come. My first course, for instance, was leek and potato, as per the menu, but in reality was a crispy sphere full of texture, taste and, again, surprise. Packed with wild rice and barley, and served with a truffled brie sauce, this was one of many intriguing vegetarian options one could choose from. Vegans, too, have plenty of choice in both starters and the main courses on the modern menu, including the excellent pumpkin and pine nut risotto I enjoyed later. Even the sides seem to take on an original and contemporary twist (I highly recommend the tenderstem broccoli with almond, and the aforementioned ‘bread and whipped butter’). Joined by a meat eater, I can also vouch for the preparation and presentation of the meat and fish, included the red wine cured halibut starter and salt marsh lamb main. The desserts, too, didn’t fail to deliver, with this being another range of classics to be given an original makeover by the new minds behind the Knights Restaurant. Overall, the result of the refurbishment seems to be about providing more than food – it’s an experience, and well worth a reservation in the near future.

There’s always HOPE We started HOPE back in April 2016 when there were only 3 nights per week where hot food was available to those living on the streets – we wanted to provide another night of food and friendship.

SUPPORTING OUR HOMELESS COMMUNITY

Each Saturday night we go out into Newcastle City Centre and provide an outreach service, where we offer hot homemade food, hot and cold drinks, essential warm clothing, sleeping bags, toiletries and any other items that are needed.

Clothing, kids’ toys, household items and toiletry donations gladly accepted. Also non-perishable food items in tins, packets, and frozen food as we do have freezer storage – these will all go to helping us feed our street friends on Saturday nights.

In August 2018 we opened our first charity shop in Birtley – where we sell items that have very kindly been donated but that are unsuitable to give to people living on the streets.

CHANGING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY of Gateshead and Chester-le-Street - a place close to their hearts would be the perfect setting.

“Over the past 4 years I have worked with children from a variety of backgrounds: those who have Special Education Needs, mental health issues, and those who lack confidence, to those who are gifted and talented high achievers. What is amazing with our programme, is there is something for everyone from age 4 to 18 years old, and the system really works.” Carol Milne, Centre Director

Wow!

What an amazing start to the year Kip McGrath Chester-le-Street is having! The professional education centre in the heart of our community has only been open for 4 months, and is already having a significant impact on many local children’s lives. Carol and Julia the Centre Directors are a mother and daughter team, who are passionate about children’s well-being and supporting them in their educational journey. They are driven by seeing student’s confidence and self-esteem grow, as well as making progress in maths and English.

“One of our parent’s informed us recently that Kip has had such a huge positive impact on her son; it has changed his life. He has moved up several sets at school. Hearing this feedback is why we do what we do.” Julia Poole, Centre Director

Students start with a free assessment, where parents receive feedback on where they are working in relation to age related expectations. Then a bespoke lesson is created on their individual needs. The team believe that the Kip system is so successful because all of their tutors are highly experienced, fully qualified, teachers who deliver exceptional quality, 80 minute lessons. The sessions are small groups, each child receives one on one teaching time; working on a personalised programme designed on their specific needs. There is consistent reviewing of student progress to ensure every child stays on track, working towards their goals. Carol and Julia are looking forward to continuing to welcome more students and seeing their confidence grow.

Carol started the business in Gateshead in 2016, opening her first centre on Regent Terrace, Gateshead. As more and more families reached out asking for support, Julia soon came on board too. Their Gateshead East centre has proven to be one of the most successful Kip McGrath Education Centres in the UK and across the world, with Carol being recognised as Franchisee of the Year 2018. They quickly realised that they wanted to provide the same services and opportunities to families outside

If you would like to book your child in for a free assessment call 0191 338 9556. Follow Kip McGrath Chester le Street on Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with their events. 28 | IN&AROUND

Places to go...

GOOSTREY FOR JODRELL BANK

I

finally managed to visit Jodrell Bank (JB) between Christmas and New Year. This was the trip postponed last July by the big party to celebrate the granting of UNESCO World Heritage Status. The best fare was using the southern TransPennine route between Sheffield and Stockport – much more rural than the northern TP route taken by trains from the north east.

The observatory was established by the University of Manchester in 1945 by Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer, to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the WW2. Subsequently, it has been involved in the research of meteors, quasars, and was heavily involved with the tracking of Space Age probes in the 1960s,

Daniel and I travelled from the north east via York and Doncaster, riding the TP to Stockport and the local train to Goostrey, arriving on time at 12.41. The little station has some interesting displays on the radio telescope and is a short walk from the village of the same name. The JB explainer’s talk at Jodrell Bank takes place at 14.30 daily, and we debated whether to have lunch in the Red Lion pub before walking to the radio telescope or use the café there. I made a wrong judgement and chose the pub: not particularly good, fairly expensive, and took an age to arrive. So we might miss the talk.

The work began in Manchester itself, but electrical interference from the trams on Oxford Road prevented effective research, and required a move out into the country. Electrical interference remains a problem on the rural site though, and visitors and staff are prohibited from using mobile phones. Jodrell Bank is primarily used for investigating radio waves from the planets and stars, effectively looking out for life on other planets, although none has yet been found, and perhaps never will be. A good reason for looking after our planet by travelling by train wherever possible. JB is also HQ for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a collaboration of 20 countries to create the most powerful radio telescope ever built.

Jodrell Bank is two and a half miles from the station, and after we had eaten I had to summon a local taxi to get us there in time using the only number I had. The driver had only returned from the Canaries the previous night, so I am rather glad we were not visiting the day before. Instructions for walking along the narrow country lanes on JB’s website advise not to walk this route during hours of darkness as there are no street lights. It adds that at one point it will appear that you are walking away from the telescope, but to “hold your nerve as you are on the correct road”. The Lovell telescope, 76.2 metres in diameter, and now the third largest in the world, dominates the site. The guide who took us round had worked there for several years but admitted to me afterwards that he had never been up inside the contraption. 38 | IN&AROUND

We saw the indoor orrery, a model of the solar system, but it was unfortunately too dark to explore the 35 acres arboretum, which houses the UK’s national collections of crab apple and mountain ash, as well as a small scale model of the solar system at a scale of approximately 1:5,000,000,000. From closing time at 17.00 to our train at 18.03 we had ample time to walk back along the unlit lanes facing oncoming traffic and retracing the route of the taxi on foot at zero cost, to board our homeward train.

A very happy 204th birthday to Charlotte Brontë The eldest of the three Brontë sisters to survive to adulthood, Charlotte – also known by the pennames Lord Charles Albert Florian Wellesley and Currer Bell – was born on 21st April 1816 in Thornton in West Yorkshire, and went on to become one of the most celebrated figures of English literature. She published poems and four novels, the best-known of which being the passionate Jane Eyre of 1847.

This proved to be a fruitful apprenticeship for their later literary careers, and at the age of 15, Charlotte – by now being given a stimulating and wide-ranging education by Patrick and Maria’s sister Elizabeth – enrolled at the nearby Roe Head School. While this proved a less harsh environment than the Clergy Daughters’ School, Charlotte only spent 18 months there, before again returning home.

An adverse and tragic upbringing

Passion, rebellion and literary triumph

Brontë was the third of six children of Patrick Brontë, an Irish crofter’s son who, via a Cambridge education, rose to the status of perpetual curate at Haworth in Yorkshire. Charlotte was just five at the time of her mother Maria’s death in 1821, and further tragedy visited the family four years later, when the harsh conditions in the Clergy Daughters’ School at Cowan Bridge, Lancashire brought about the death of Charlotte’s two older sisters.

As an adult, Charlotte worked as a governess and spent a number of years at a Brussels board school, where her unrequited love for the headmaster provided inspiration for her novels Villette (1853) and The Professor. The latter was actually her first novel, but was rejected by many publishing houses, before eventually being published posthumously in 1857.

The three siblings had been sent to the school in 1824, and the institution provided no shortage of material for the eventual Jane Eyre, in which Charlotte lambasted it – perhaps exaggeratedly – under the thin disguise of Lowood, with the real-life school’s principal, the Reverend William Carus Wilson, widely regarded as the counterpart to the novel’s mean and vindictive Mister Brocklehurst. Charlotte and surviving younger sister Emily returned home in June 1825, and spent the next five years there learning, playing and writing and telling romantic tales to each other, as well as inventing imaginative games that they could play at home or on the desolate moors. 40 | IN&AROUND

This meant it was the passion and rebellion of Jane Eyre that ultimately propelled her to fame, and a place in London literary circles including such legendary figures as Elizabeth Gaskell and William Makepeace Thackeray. She followed it up with 1849’s Shirley, which was written during and after the tragic deaths of her three siblings within a single year. In June 1854, Charlotte married long-time suitor – and her father’s curate – Arthur Nicholls. Her subsequent pregnancy, however, was accompanied by exhausting morning sickness, and she died aged 38 on 31st March 1855. The last of her siblings to pass away, Charlotte had nonetheless – by the mid-19th century – more than assured her place in literary legend for centuries to come.

Easy Spaghetti Bolognese Everyone needs a basic Spaghetti Bolognese recipe that still tastes great, no matter how simple. Get that depth of flavour by cooking the sauce very gently until it’s super rich. This is designed to be a low cost recipe. PREP: 30 MINS COOK: 30 MINS

Ingredients • 2 tbsp olive oil • 400g/14oz beef mince • 1 onion, diced • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 100g/3½oz carrot, grated • 2 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 400ml/14fl oz stock (made from stock cube. Ideally beef, but any will do) • 400g/14oz dried spaghetti • salt and pepper

Easy

Method

1.

Heat a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and once hot add the beef mince and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook the mince until well browned over a medium-high heat (be careful not to burn the mince. It just needs to be a dark brown colour). Once browned, transfer the mince to a bowl and set aside.

2.

Add another tablespoon of oil to the saucepan you browned the mince in and turn the heat to medium. Add the onions and a pinch of salt and fry gently for 5-6 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another 2 minutes. Add the grated carrot then pour the mince and any juices in the bowl back into the saucepan.

Serves 4

3.

Add the tomatoes to the pan and stir well to mix. Pour in the stock, bring to a simmer and then reduce the temperature to simmer gently for 45 minutes, or until the sauce is thick and rich. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary.

4.

When ready to cook the spaghetti, heat a large saucepan of water and add a pinch of salt. Cook according to the packet instructions. Once the spaghetti is cooked through, drain and add to the pan with the bolognese sauce. Mix well and serve.

FILM REVIEW:

ONWARD

Craig Lenaghan Copywriter

Although the prolific animation studio Pixar’s latest portrays what, at first glance, is a stereotypical fantasy world, it’s much more relatable than you might expect, as the actual magic has largely lapsed among the populace. So, a centaur cop drives a car, a dragon is kept as an overexcitable if ultimately tame pet, and unicorns rummage like squirrels through rubbish bins. It all makes for a lot of delightful silliness while setting the stage for the film’s more poignant moments.

That’s just one example of how Onward has fun updating a number of fantasy cliches. As the awkward self-doubter who initially knows next to nothing about magic, Ian represents probably most of the parents in the audience. Meanwhile, Barley is the roleplaying geek who – with some of the good-natured doziness of Emmet Brickowski, the Lego Movie protagonist previously brought to audible life by Pratt – teaches Ian more and more of the spells he needs to succeed in his adventure.

In amongst this world are our two leads, elf brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot – voiced respectively by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, with the Avengers stars’ chemistry consistently sparkling. The ever-reliable Julia LouisDreyfus voices the kind-hearted mother Laurel, who breaks the news that, now that Ian has reached his 16th birthday, the boys can inherit a very special item from their late father: a magical staff capable of restoring him to life for just 24 hours.

Director Dan Scanlon lost his own father early, and has spoken of how Onward is written from a place of “personal truth”. Even despite Onward’s lack of a clearcut antagonist, the emotional stakes are certainly high for Ian and Barley as they race against time before their patriarch has to disappear again, this time for good. No spoilers here about how the situation eventually resolves itself, but it will certainly resonate with viewers who have also lost a loved one in gut-punching circumstances.

Alas, the brothers mess up the spell – leaving them, creepy though it sounds, with just their father’s sentient legs. The only hope for bringing back the rest of him before the 24 hours elapse is a rare gem waiting at the end of a Lord of the Rings-style quest. The brothers eagerly embark on it while towing along their literal half-dad, who becomes a riveting character of his own even sans torso. The first stop? A tavern where the boys hope to meet a mighty manticore – who, it turns out, is now rushed off her feet as an embattled restauranteur, Corey (Octavia Spencer).

Pixar has a long and established history of moving audiences close to tears; the love story told in the opening scenes of 2009’s superb Up particularly springs to mind. Onward doesn’t quite scale the heights – either creatively or emotionally – of that film, but that probably says more about how high the Disney-owned studio has set the bar than Onward’s own (few) shortcomings. Like Ian and Barley, Pixar has hearteningly succeeded in rekindling a little magic from a bygone era.

What’s on

in your home?

As you can probably imagine, we have to bring you a somewhat different ‘What’s on’ piece to our usual this month. At the time in late March that IN&AROUND was headed for press, the UK government had advised everyone in the country to avoid “nonessential” travel and contact with others, as the country sought to minimise the impact of the coronavirus, which causes the illness COVID-19. As a result, large numbers of Britons have chosen to self-isolate or work from home. Many events have also been cancelled, and venues forced to temporarily close their doors. So, with any local events that do remain on the schedule being subject to change, we thought that this month, we’d focus not on ‘what’s on’, but instead on what to do during these unprecedented times in recent history. First of all... what do I need to do? Hopefully, you’ll now know the basics of how to keep yourself as safe as possible during the coronavirus outbreak – and you can find the latest guidance on the NHS website at www. nhs.uk. Nonetheless, as a refresher, the latest advice for avoiding catching and spreading the virus, as IN&AROUND went to press, included frequently washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze, and avoiding social activities such as visits to pubs, restaurants, theatres and cinemas. Things that the NHS says you should avoid, meanwhile, include touching your eyes, nose or

46 | IN&AROUND

mouth with unclean hands, and having visitors to your home – even friends and family. What are the symptoms of coronavirus? The NHS currently urges people to stay at home if they have a high temperature or a new, continuous cough. If you experience these symptoms, you must avoid going to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital, and you don’t need to contact the NHS’s 111 line simply to tell them you are staying at home. You should only call 111 if you are unable to get help online at https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19/. How can I find out what’s happening locally? The Durham County Council website’s section on the coronavirus is at www.durham.gov.uk/ article/22892/Coronavirus-latest-news-andadvice. Local news websites, such as www. thenorthernecho.co.uk and www.chroniclelive. co.uk, will also provide the latest details on how coronavirus is being handled in the area. Otherwise, you can find the most up-to-date guidance and information on the UK-wide coronavirus outbreak at www.gov.uk and www. nhs.uk. How can I spend my days, weeks or months in isolation? Well, provided that you follow all of the necessary advice and guidance from the above bodies, that’s very much up to you. May we suggest breaking out that Rubik’s cube, learning to paint, working or, perhaps, catching up on your reading of previous issues of IN&AROUND? Hey, it’s only a suggestion...
