Our community alarm service helps give you peace of mind.
Care Connect supports vulnerable people of all ages, providing a monitoring and response service to people’s homes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering assistance and reassurance whenever it is needed. There is a charge for the service and this will be discussed upon enquiry. If you have a relative, neighbour or friend who is vulnerable or socially isolated, Care Connect could provide a vital service.
The service operates 24/7 so staff are always able to offer support and assistance, dispatch responders to someone’s home or contact the emergency services where necessary.

If additional support is required, numerous types of equipment called Telecare is available, including items for people at risk of falling, support for those with memory loss, or dementia, those

Peace of mind with Independence at home is very important, especially as we get older Care Connect is a trusted 24-hour emergency monitoring and response service provided by Durham County Council. A lifeline unit is plugged into the home telephone point. The customer will receive a personal alarm pendant that’s worn around the neck or on a wrist strap. If they ever need to raise the alarm, all they need to do is press that button and the service automatically knows who they are, where they live and will make sure the right help is sent to them.

Additional features can be incorporated into your support package, at a small charge such as reassurance calls, weekly visits, additional or lost pendants and monitored smoke detectors. When your magazine reaches 200 editions, it’s only right that you take advantage of one of your regular features to tell your readers about your history, right? Yeah, we thought so! At seventeen years old, we are officially the longest established local community magazine in the county, and we’re still going strong. Of course, lots has changed in that time, but we have continued to grow and adapt with the times, to create the community magazine you know and love today. It all started way back in 2005. The first edition of IN&AROUND was sent to print in April and made its way through the letterboxes of businesses in Chester-le-Street that same month. IN&AROUND became North Durham’s first community magazine, and advertised local businesses to the people of Chester-le-Street. The magazine was left in shops for the public to pick up, before we moved to door to door delivery. In the early days, IN&AROUND was simply an ad magazine. As time went on, we started to expand. The magazine started to advertise businesses from all over North Durham, and was delivered to more and more homes in the area. Now, we deliver to thousands of residential addresses, giving our advertisers the best chance possible of a return on their investment. As we expanded our team, we were also able to expand our content. We started including more

editorials to engage our readers and create a proper community feel. The magazine also includes a competition every month, with some amazing prizes up for grabs - which you guys absolutely love and enter every month! At IN&AROUND, we do our best to move with the times and create a magazine that our readers enjoy digesting and our advertisers are proud to show off their business in. Some of our advertisers have been with us for over ten years, and one or two have even featured since the very first issue. Three new food outlets to be developed in Stanley by the end of 2022 Developers in Stanley hope to complete a project by the end of 2022, that will bring a Starbucks, Greggs and Dominos to the town and it’s divided opinion in the town. The brand new development, which costs £2.6m, will be created near Agnes Street. Originally, the plans were approved by Durham County Council in July 2020, after they deemed it more appropriate than the empty land that was being used for people to park their cars.
Starbucks, Greggs and Dominos are the latest big-brand names to find a home in Stanley, after McDonald’s, Home Bargains and Aldi all opened their doors in recent years. The addition of three new food outlets however, has caused some controversy in the town. Why are people objecting?
What does the development mean for the town?
Some residents are pleased that the land is being used to bring more jobs and business to Stanley, while others feel that Durham County Council should be doing more to promote healthy eating.
Almost two years later, the site, which will be home to a drive-thru Starbucks and two full Dominos and Greggs sites, is due to be ready by the end of the year.
We’re really excited to see that so many businesses want to open up in Stanley, and that more business will be directed towards the town centre, rather than further afield
More than 65 jobs are expected to be created at the new retail development, with 14 of those being full-time and 51 being part-time. 39 car park spaces will also be incorporated into the outlet.

Seaham Food Festival Seaham Food Festival returns on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August. The festival will bring delicious street food, celebrity chefs and more to the County Durham coast. As always, stalls serving up the finest local produce and exciting street food will be at the heart of the Durham County Council event.

Exhibition showing life during lockdown to get a second viewing A number of County Durham’s residents took part in a photography project that showed off what life was like in lockdown, and now they’re going to see the results of their work! The exhibition, which was shown by Durham County Council in January, tells the story of the most vulnerable in our county, during the pandemic. Home Time shows the life of people in the lockdown through the eyes of those who had to shield, care home residents and isolated members of the community. Who got involved? 27 people from across the county were recruited to share their stories, after receiving photography mentoring to help tell their stories during lockdown. Wideyed, the not-for-profit photography collective that produced the collection, displayed it at the Gala Gallery between January and March this year. Some of the participants however, weren’t able to make the journey to see the exhibition, due to the threat of coronavirus at the time. The council have now proceeded to fund Wideyed to bring the exhibition to the remaining participants. From this funding, an “exhibition in a box” has been created. It contains all of the elements of the 26 | IN&AROUND
exhibition on a smaller scale, and includes some interactive pieces. These include jigsaws made from the photography and a dictaphone to listen to audio. Where is the exhibition going? Right now, the exhibition in a box has been delivered to West Lodge Care Home in Billy Row, where the residents will be able to enjoy the results of their work during lockdown. It was incredibly important to the council that the residents of West Lodge Care Home got to see the results of their hard work, as they played such an instrumental role in bringing the Home Time exhibition to life. Cllr Elizabeth Scott was particularly enthusiastic about the residents seeing it, saying: “Through the exhibition in a box, participants will be able to see their finished work and, with its interactive elements, can enjoy the exhibition in a more personable way knowing they have contributed to a significant piece of work.” The team responsible for putting the exhibition in a box together expressed great excitement at meeting the participants in real life, as they had been so crucial in telling the untold stories of life during lockdown.

V: A LOT has changed in the 16 years since I started working on IN&AROUND. We have changed the way we lay out the magazine, added extra editorial to engage our readers, How long have you worked for and run competitions every month IN&AROUND? that get an amazing response. We always do our best to help each other out. And finally, what’s your favourite thing about working with the other person? V: What is my favourite thing about working with Tony? I guess it’s that we connected from the first day he joined the company. We work very closely together on creating the adverts and the final magazine. Each day is a laugh. We are totally crazy together and bounce off each other, but we understand each other’s roles and we work really well together. I’m Goose to his Maverick!! T: Val is always full of energy and is always ready to help and get you through the day. She is 100% the mam of the office (lol) and I loved that her Skype profile picture was the Fairy Godmother. It also helps that we are both dog lovers. Sometimes, we don’t always get much work done - we just send each other dog pics! And there you have it - Tony and Val. The Perils of Hot Weather Heat stroke is a common emergency presentation at vets over the summer, most commonly in dogs. It is more common in brachycephalic dogs such as British and French Bulldogs, and dark coloured dogs. It can often be fatal and many dogs die despite treatment. It is also preventable.

just 3,000 in population, Appleby is a small town which is much smaller than my home Co. Durham pit village. It boasts greater antiquity, though, since the Norman keep of the Castle dates from 1092, which is easily found at the top of the hill known as Boroughgate. The Castle is now a comfortable 12 room hotel with three self-contained cottages and, although the rooms are separate from the Keep, it has a growing reputation for cuisine including a five-course tasting menu which I enjoyed during my one-night stay. I travelled from home via Carlisle on the Tyne Valley Line and after a short break there for a coffee at the long-established Caffeine Rush trike which is permanently parked on Carlisle station proceeded south on the Settle and Carlisle railway to Appleby in Westmoreland station. It has to be admitted that the most scenic parts of the S&C are further south at higher altitude, but the journey by Northern Railway climbing through the Eden Valley is pleasant enough. The station is on the east side of the town, about ten minutes' walk down Clifford Terrace (Clifford being a name you hear a lot hereabouts) and down an ideally positioned footpath to the only vehicle bridge over the River Eden. This is where the horses are washed during the

Horse Fair at the start of June. You therefore come into Appleby at the bottom of Boroughgate. You’ll find The Cupboard Under The Stairs, Appleby’s newest retail addition, which enchants residents and visitors alike with its licensed Harry Potter merchandise. Close by is the lovely named Crown and Cushion, one of Appleby’s popular pubs which has no problem is dividing itself into both pub and afternoon tea café. The rest of the shopping offer can probably be visited in ten minutes, but a useful diversion off the town centre is to St. Lawrence church which is the burial place of Lady Anne Clifford, a black marble monument in the North aisle. The church was badly damaged twice during Scottish raids, but was restored in 1654. Walk up the hill and you will find one of the most enchanting features of the town, more cute even than the Harry Potter shop. On the left near the top is St. Anne’s Hospital, a mid seventeenth century attempt at sheltered housing, for eleven poor sisters and a Mother who led the community, and founded by Lady Anne Clifford in 1651. By 1961 the place was ready for refurbishment. I visited their little chapel and found various versions of the rules of the hospital, which we would now term almshouses, and saw the ladies there resident, but it
would have been a breach of the rules to look inside their little cottages, since gentlemen callers are strictly forbidden. And so to the top of the hill to Appleby Castle, with its the Norman keep, which I enjoyed a tour of on the morning of my departure following a good breakfast. If you like to stay in ancient buildings more like a grand home than an hotel, consider Appleby. Good riverside walks, fishing for guests, even an art deco town swimming pool, pleasant hostelries and historically the seat of the ancient county of Westmoreland, now Cumbria. I recommend the four poster bed of the Clifford Bedroom, overlooking the courtyard. There was a ghost hunt on the night of my visit, but I was tucked up in bed and saw none of the apparitions, and ghost-hunters were not to be seen at breakfast in the Great Hall, built 1454.

Faye Rodgerson Pixar’s latest outing (and addition to the Toy Story universe), Lightyear, is certainly fun for the entire family. Featuring all of the iconic Buzz moments we know and love from the Toy Story franchise, as well as some new ones (we’ll talk about the pen later), this movie certainly places itself within the Pixar universe in a way that forces the viewer to recognise it as a separate entity to Toy Story. In 1995, Andy got a brand new toy; a character from his favourite movie - Buzz Lightyear. Lightyear is that movie. And what a movie it is. Lightyear embodies every Pixar trope that has ever been established, and then some. The themes of friendship, teamwork and bravery come to the forefront of this movie in a way we haven’t seen for many years. The audience follows Buzz (Chris Evans), as he attempts to reconcile a mistake that left him and his crew trapped on the hostile planet T’Kani Prime. As he tests fuels and rockets in an effort to reach hyperspeed, those left behind on T’Kani Prime continue to live their lives and age, as his four minute mission in space equates to four years on the planet. As he commits to his mission, Buzz loses sight of the people around him and misses out on his best friend's life, eventually returning to the planet to find that she has passed away. Buzz then teams up with Alisha’s granddaughter, and a rag-tag bunch of “rookies”, Mo (voiced by Taika Waititi) and Darby (voiced by Dale Soules), as well as his therapy robot,

Sox (voice by Peter Sohn). They come together to defeat Evil Emperor Zurg, find peace and comfort in their friendship, learn to work as a team and face their fears, once and for all. One thing that Lightyear includes extremely well, despite the fact it is supposed to be a movie that would have been released in 1995, is representation. Alisha Hawthrone (Uzo Aduba), one of the story’s key players in the movie’s first act, is a black woman who is the highest ranking member of Star Command, and is elected leader on T’Kani Prime. As well as this, she is a lesbian, a fact which is casually acknowledged by Buzz, who when finding out his best friend is engaged simply says “what’s her name?” - a huge step forward in children’s media for the LGBT+ community. Lightyear also balances humour that children will understand very effectively against jokes for the parents. All of the running gags that are set up throughout the movie have very satisfying payoff’s, which is something I think can often miss the mark in a children’s movie. This is largely down to the outstanding voice cast that have been brought on for this movie, especially Taika Waititi, who’s moments of comedy genius completely steal the show on occasion. Most importantly for me, there were not many references to the original Toy Story franchise. The only crucial moments that made it from one movie to another were the character of Buzz and his catchphrase “To infinity and beyond”, allowing for this spin-off to become a completely separate entity to the first four films. All in all, Lightyear is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a movie for the whole family. It is certainly one that is worth splashing out on to see in the cinema, though I imagine it will be made available on Disney+ in time for the summer holidays - so be sure to keep it on the back burner for our first rainy day!!
