Durham County Council to choose another site for their HQ It feels as though the saga surrounding the future of Durham County Council’s headquarters has been going on for ages, and now there’s been another development. The new council HQ at The Sands is nearly complete, but the authority’s cabinet has agreed to look for an alternative site for the third time. What’s going on? Durham County Council is currently run by a coalition administration between Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors. Their plan is to sell or let the building at The Sands, while they search for a new location for their premises. At the last local election, Labour lost full control of Durham County Council for the first time. Their decision to build the new DCC HQ at The Sands site has been labelled one of the key reasons behind the result. A previous report has confirmed that the current County Hall at Aykley Heads is no longer fit for purpose. It proposes that the site be demolished in favour of planned redevelopment works, to make the area a “strategic employment site”.

10 | IN&AROUND

What is the council saying? Labour have raised some concerns about the review delaying the demolition of Aykley Heads and the development of the new site, but Councillor Richard Bell, a cabinet member for finance, highlighted that County Hall can’t be demolished until the council’s archives are relocated to the new History Centre, which won’t be complete until 2023. Cllr Bell criticised the previous administration for commencing with building work on The Sands before a common land inquiry was made, which resulted in delays to the project. He also highlighted that the council intends to occupy the site next year, should an alternative location not be sourced. The council also plans to use the building, should a satisfactory deal not be reached with a third party. As a whole, the cabinet has agreed to approve the report recommendations laid out above. Only time will tell where Durham County Council will base themselves in the future.

Notable Birthday: Grace Kelly One of the most obvious stereotypes in an Alfred Hitchcock movie is the “classic Hitchcock blonde” and there is no one more commonly associated with the mantle than Grace Kelly. Grace Patricia Kelly was born on the 12th of November 1929. Having expressed an interest in performance as a child, Kelly was mentored to Hollywood by her uncle George Kelly, the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright. Kelly enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts after high school, seeking a career on Broadway after her graduation. But her talent for film would lead to her rise through Hollywood and to international fame. She was discovered on the set of her first film, “Fourteen Hours”(1951), by Gary Cooper, who arranged for her to play his young wife in “High Noon” (1952), which is credited with being the film that put Grace Kelly on the path to stardom, though it was her next picture, “Mogambo”, that saw her become critically acclaimed. Kelly’s critical success only continued beyond Mogambo. In 1954, Kelly won the role of Georgie Elgin in “The Country Girl”. Her uncharacteristically stripped down performance saw her win an Academy Award for Best Actress, beating Judy Garland to claim her Oscar and remains one of the youngest winners to this day. The 1950’s marked the start of Grace Kelly’s collaboration with director Alfred Hitchcock. The pair made three films together and Hitchcock continually sought to bring her back to Hollywood after her marriage to the Prince of Monaco. By 1955, Grace Kelly was one of the highest-paid and most respected actresses in the world. It was around this time she met her future husband, Prince Rainier III of Monaco and the pair were married on the 19th of April 1956. The couple had three children, Caroline, Albert and Stephanie. 12 | IN&AROUND

Her duties as princess consort included being active in charitable and cultural work. Despite resisting repeated attempts to lure her back to performing, Kelly was rumoured to be starring in Hitchcock’s “Marnie” (1964), but backed out of the project. She did, however, lend her voice to a few documentary films and poetry readings. Additionally, Kelly joined the board of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation in 1976. Tragedy struck on September the 13th 1982, when Princess Grace suffered a stroke at the wheel and lost control of the vehicle, plunging down a 45 foot embankment. At the young age of 52, Princess Grace lost her life after being in a coma for 24 hours. Her legacy lived on posthumously, in the Princess Grace Foundation and in her cinema works that have preserved her beauty and talent for generations to come.

2017

2012 Venture Properties are celebrating their 10th birthday this November!! After a decade in the business, Venture has become a market leader, providing an exceptional service for buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords alike. Venture Properties has branches in Darlington, Crook, Durham and Chester-le-Street, which has enabled it to establish a strong presence throughout the North East. When asked to comment on the success of the business, Lynne Stephenson, Director of Venture, Chester-le-Street had this to say: “When I started the business with my two Co-Directors, the market was depressed and stagnant. Many of my friends and family thought I was mad to be starting a business during such uncertain times, but we battled through and took advantage of a buoyant rental market. Through perseverance, hard work and commitment, we were able to overcome the hard times and prospered in the years that followed.” During those 10 years, the Chester-le-Street branch of Venture has been involved in many charitable efforts. An example of this would be the ‘Tour de Branch’, an event whereby participants cycled from Chester-le-Street to Darlington via all the Venture offices, 43 miles in all, sporting the signature Venture green in an effort to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Venture staff have also hosted Macmillan Coffee Mornings, raised money for the

16 | IN&AROUND

Dogs Trust, and donated football strips and more recently hanging baskets to local schools in the community, to try to give something back. The office in Chester-le-Street has been flooded more times than they wish to mention, such as in June 2012, when Front Street and the Market Place became a river for a few days. Then, in March 2020, came the first COVID lockdown, but the Venture staff still managed to move numerous clients to their new homes. While the Venture Properties team has experienced challenges during those 10 years, they have strived tirelessly to overcome them and go from strength to strength. Venture Properties would like to take this opportunity to thank all its customers both old and new, for the never-ending support to help the business grow and thrive. To celebrate 10 years in Chester-le-Street, Venture has several Bespoke packages for both new sales and lettings. So, if you are thinking of selling or renting, give Venture Properties a call now on 0191 3729898… and see how they can help you to DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE.

BBC to invest £25 million in the North East The BBC plans to invest at least £25 million in the North East over the next five years, which will be the biggest investment they’ve made in the area in decades. Local and combined authorities have agreed to work with the BBC to grow the production industry in the area. This will include funding new television programmes, talent development and additional support to the creative sector. The North East is already famed for being a shooting location for some well known television and films. High-profile television series, such as Vera and Inspector George Gently have featured locations in the region, while famous heritage sites like Durham Cathedral were included in feature films. Harry Potter and Marvel’s Avengers Endgame were all shot here. County Durham is currently longlisted for the title of UK City of Culture 2025. The council are hoping that this partnership with the BBC will mean showcasing the talent and creativity in the area. What do plans include? Plans to expand the digital scene in the North East will build on commissions that have already been made, such as a BBC Daytime TV commissioner being based permanently in the area.

32 | IN&AROUND

Ambulance, the award winning BBC One documentary, will follow our region’s emergency staff for two series. Meanwhile BBC Comedy will host masterclasses and events designed to develop new talent and skills, with Newcastle being declared the first City of Comedy and hosting this year’s New Comedy Awards. Additionally, there are plans for 70 jobs to be created in the area, based at a new tech hub in Newcastle. Radio 4 plan to bring their talents to the area, recording a new comedy series in the region and bringing up one of the annual Reith Lectures later in the year. A huge opportunity for our area As many creatives will know, opportunities for working in film or television in the region have been limited for lots of years, leading people to move to media hubs in Manchester and London. Tony Harrington, chair of Culture Durham, has seen the BBC’s decision to invest as indication that they recognise how much our region has to offer in terms of skills and creativity, as well as a filming location. Hopefully, if County Durham are successful in their bid for UK City of Culture 2025, we can tap further into this opportunity and commission an ambitious and inclusive programme that benefits the entire region.

I explored Marshall’s Yard, a former tractor and roller manufactory which is now a successful retail park close to the centre Places to go... apart from the reception, and breakfast only available at a cafe up the road. Not finding any restaurants for an evening meal, and eschewing the many takeaways, I settled for a meal in McDonalds. I returned to my room to find the key card did not work, and was looking forward to my visit to no staff about. I entered my room only by Gainsborough on 30th September, staying overnight. I was arriving from pumping the handle up and down and belting the keycard on the door’s reader London on an LNER Azuma into Lincoln, simultaneously until it eventually gave way. and changed on to a new Northern two carriage train which was going through to Breakfast in said cafe was quite good and I Sheffield. do for the rest of the day. A walk on the banks of the River Trent was thwarted by the lack of bridges. So I resolved to get the local train straight away to Retford which proved a much better choice: the Market Place was buzzing, the Chesterfield Canal and King’s Park made a pleasant walk between station and town, and the Bassetlaw Museum was welcoming and informative about the town’s history, especially the sections about rural agriculture and the Mayflower Pilgrims. Indeed, as the picture shows, representatives of the Wampanoag community in the USA had recently visited Retford to built a traditional Wetu in the grounds of the Bassetlaw Museum. The museum is quite extensive and when leaving I found I had missed out an entire wing, but I needed to make my way back to the railway station. The compact town centre was fascinating to explore, and overall I found Retford a good deal more interesting and resumed my trip north on another LNER Azuma with a ten minute same platform change at Doncaster for Durham which I reached bang on time at 1826. .

FILM

REVIEW

When Daniel Craig first appears in the 25th James Bond film as the iconic super-spy, he’s adopting a surprisingly – brace yourself – romantic persona. Narratively, No Time to Die follows almost straight on from its predecessor, as Bond drives into the sunset with Dr Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux playing Bond’s main love interest a second time). At one point, Madeleine urges her beau to drive more quickly, but he resists. “We have all the time in the world,” he says dreamily. As fans of 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – where George Lazenby’s Bond utters the same line in a similar context – will probably expect, things abruptly take a tragic turn. While in Italy with Madeleine, Bond decides – on Madeleine’s suggestion – to visit his deceased ex Vesper Lynd’s tomb. However, when he does, Spectre agents ambush him – leading the now-embittered Bond to accuse Madeleine of a covert betrayal. There’s a lot of ensuing story to take in – especially as it soon emerges that Bond and the crime syndicate Spectre have a common enemy in the form of terrorist leader Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek). Millions of lives are at stake, as Safin has stolen Project Heracles, a bioweapon originally developed at MI6 but since reprogrammed at Safin’s behest to target the DNA of specific people he seeks to eliminate. To reveal why Spectre boss Ernest Stavro Blofeld (a returning Christoph Waltz) is in Safin’s sights – despite having remained imprisoned in Belmarsh since the events of the previous Bond film – would probably be entering spoiler territory. However, we at least get an inkling with the backstory told in No Time to Die’s opening sequence, the menacing tone of which proves a chilling bellwether. Fortunately, perhaps largely due to Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s hand in the script, the Bond franchise hasn’t entirely forgotten how to lighten up. In an early scene, Bond meets up with CIA agent Paloma (Ana de Armas) – and the chemistry between them is so 46 | IN&AROUND

much fun, it’s easy to wonder how much livelier the film could have felt if she had spent a lot more time accompanying Bond on his mission. Admittedly, though, it could have jarred too much with the sombre tone director Cory Joji Fukunaga evidently intended for much of the (almost) three-hour runtime. Fukunaga turns out to be an inspired choice of director, being no stranger to adapting either the romantic (see his 2011 take on Jane Eyre) or the macabre (having co-wrote the 2017 feature-length treatment of Stephen King’s It) for the big screen. These are both qualities he brings in abundance to No Time to Die, which often feels equal parts melodrama and conspiracy thriller. These aspects harmonise in brilliantly dark fashion – and, while No Time to Die isn’t quite as taut as 2012’s Skyfall (possibly the spectacular peak of Craig’s time in the tux), it’s close enough in overall quality to make for a fitting send-off to this particularly gritty Bond era.

County Durham on the home stretch to be named UK City of Culture 2025 County Durham is one step closer to being crowned UK City of Culture 2025. Last month, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) announced its longlist of eight locations that will progress to the next stage of the competition, with Durham being selected from 20 other bidding locations. Initially, a submission of interest was made on behalf of Culture Durham by Durham County Council, with Durham University signing on as the campaigns principal partner. The two driving forces are united by their belief in the power of culture to transform lives.

Hopgood saying “Even making it this far will have a positive impact, with the increased publicity attracting more visitors and providing a boost to tourism, retail and hospitality sectors”. Their focus has now shifted to take County Durham even further into the competition. The Partnership is now working hard to finalise the bid for UK City of Culture 2025, which needs to be submitted by January 2022. A bright digital future awaits

Great things for the area

The announcement has come at an exciting time for Durham’s creative and digital scene. Just days before the announcement from the CDMS, the BBC confirmed that they will be spending £25 million in the North East over the next five years. Arts Council England have also declared County Durham one of its priority places for investment. As part of its three year delivery programme.

Culture Durham’s bid is on behalf of the entire county, not just Durham City itself. Tony Harrington, the chair of the Partnership, said “our aim is to deliver an inclusive cultural programme that resonates with our communities and reflects our desire to innovate, inspire and grow”.

Being made a finalist in the competition also means that the region will receive £40,000 from DCMS to develop the bid. Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries wished all of the successful bids luck. When asked about County Durham’s bid, she described it as showing “a lot of promise”.

Durham County Council are thrilled to even make it this far in the process, with leader Cllr Amanda

We can expect to see an overall winner announced in May 2022, who will take on the baton from Coventry, UK City of Culture 2021.

The partners are now urging people to continue to support the Durham 2025 campaign, especially as the judging panel has recognised the rich cultural heritage and creative potential on offer in the area.

The North East Autism Society (NEAS) is calling on people across the region to donate unwanted apples from their gardens and allotments to support with the delivery of its vocational training programmes at New Warlands Farm.

Last year the training programme was expanded to include fruit juice production, with the charity launching its own brand of pure apple juice, which is handmade and bottled on site by service users. “We have planted around 150 apple trees at New Warlands Farm but they don’t produce enough apples to meet demand,” says NEAS CEO John Phillipson. “So we’re relying on donations to enable our adults to continue producing the juice as part of their vocational training.”

So could your next customer...

In addition to adult day services, New Warlands Farm is also home to the charity’s short breaks service, which offers respite care for adults aged 16+ in six purpose-built lodges - and due to increasing demand, NEAS is currently recruiting for a number of support workers to join the team.

“Short breaks is an incredibly valuable service, not only for the individuals we support but also for their families,” says Sonja Evans, Area Manager for Short Breaks. “We’re always on the lookout for hard-working, caring and dedicated people to join our experienced team.”

Why everyone needs a Will It is often thought you only need to sort a Will when you are older, but it is never too soon and the earlier the better. We passionately believe everyone should have a Will in place as soon as they can, especially if you have a family or a partner and own assets like a house or business. Whatever your age or circumstances, everyone needs one – and, vitally, it needs to be right for you. That is where we come into our own, crafting Wills tailor-made for you as a simple off-the-shelf Will is often not enough.

It is why we have created a series of short videos and easy-to-read guides on our new website at www.hamiltonlegacy.co.uk to help easily explain the key areas covering Wills, Business Wills, Powers of Attorney, care costs and many more topics. We know considering your death or that of a loved one is hard, but it is even harder to imagine the ones you love may end up with nothing or your children are not looked after by the right people. For example, without a Guardian in a Will, social services decide where your child (if under 18) will live. We have 20 years’ experience of working with clients with a variety of differing personal situations – whether you are married, unmarried, in a samesex relationship, remarried, single, have children or other loved ones and many other combinations that make up modern family dynamics.

Slow cooker pork casserole Cosy up on cold nights with our comforting slow cooker pork casserole. Chopped apples would make a great addition – add them in the final hour of cooking 15 mins to prep

6 hrs - 8 hrs to cook

Easy

Serves up to 4 people

Directions Step 1

Heat your slow cooker. Drizzle the oil in a wide frying pan over a high heat. Season the pork, then add to the hot pan. Avoid overcrowding the meat – you may want to do this in batches. Cook until deep brown all over, then transfer to the slow cooker. Add the onion and leeks to the frying pan and cook for a few mins, until they soften. Add a splash of water and scrape any tasty bits from the bottom, then tip everything into the slow cooker. Add the carrot, herbs, stock cube, mustard and vinegar, season, then add enough water to just cover the ingredients. Stir,

Ingredients 1 tbsp vegetable or rapeseed oil 4 pork shoulder steaks (about 750g), cut into large chunks 1 onion, chopped 1 leek, chopped 1 carrot, chopped bundle of woody herbs (bouquet garni) – we used 2 bay leaves, 3 sage leaves and 4 thyme sprigs, plus a few thyme leaves to serve 1 chicken stock cube 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp cider vinegar 2 tsp cornflour 1 tbsp honey 62 | IN&AROUND

then set your slow cooker on low for 6-8 hrs, or high for 5-6 hrs.

Step 2

In a saucepan, mix the cornflour and honey with 1-2 tsp of liquid from the slow cooker, until you have a smooth paste. Add 100ml more liquid, bring to a simmer until thickened, then stir back into the casserole. Serve with mash or dumplings, scattered with thyme leaves.

Chester-le-Street Markets There is nothing more amazing than the hustle and bustle of a fantastic, busy market place. Chester-Le-Street have a fabulous market place which hosts two monthly events. The first event is on the 1st Saturday of every month, hosted by Events2gogo. The second event is the 4th Saturday of each month, hosted by Monument Coffee Co. Both companies are based in the Houghton-le-Spring area. Each event hosts an array of food and craft traders, from home fragrances, photography, pet products, holistic, handmade cakes & savouries, fresh handmade pizzas, handcrafted jewellery, hand-knitted products, metal works, flowers, fresh fruit & veg & so many more artisan and handcrafted delights. I remember as a young child going to the market place with my Nana. Going through what seemed like treasure troves (stalls filled with so many different products) getting so excited when we came across something we had been looking for, or even something we hadn’t but fell in love with instantly. Going to Citrone’s for our dinner once we were all shopped out, Nana having a cup of tea & me a glass of pop.

We need to support our local markets & high street shops to ensure these do not go extinct!!! It is down to us to make a difference & make sure that our future generations don’t lose touch with this important part of our histories. Your not just supporting a small business, you are supporting someone’s dream. Shop Local, Sell Local, Support Local.

Over the years the Market Place has changed, the layout has changed, the stalls have changed, but one thing always remained is the energy & atmosphere that the traders have always projected.

If you would like further information on the market dates, especially coming up to Christmas, please see

So passionate about the products they sell, passionate about the process of making their products by hand, explaining to their customers the process behind a product. It is infectious!!!!

Monument Coffee Co | Facebook

It is so easy to click a couple of buttons and buy from bigger companies or online websites, you don’t feel the love, you don’t feel the passion, you don’t get that ‘’infectious’’ feeling of knowing you have supported someone’s dream. Someone who may have given up working for bigger companies to do something they LOVE, HAVE PASSION FOR, and want to share that with everyone.

Fourth Saturday of the Month - Chester-le-Street Market 10am to 3pm

It isn’t just the market traders you support, you also support local high street traders. When a market drives people into a town centre, the local high street is also supported as footfall increases. And if you’re anything like us, then you have to look in the local shops on the high street as well. You never know what you may find.
