New jobs on the way as £5m County Durham farm experience centre is approved A new £5m farm experience centre and holiday lodge park proposed for County Durham has been approved by planners – paving the way for the ambitious attraction to be built at the Knitsleylocated Woodlands Park Farm, near Consett, and create eight new full-time jobs.
A cafe and accessible toilets will help to complete the £5m facility, which will be specially geared towards assisting people with special needs. Research shows that people in this category can benefit immensely from interacting with farm animals.
The development, which is set to comprise a new barn building and nine holiday lodges up for rental, is also expected to create several work experience roles for adults with special needs.
Across County Durham, 14% of pupils in the education system are estimated to have special education and disability needs. Meanwhile, across England and Wales, a sixth of people have activity-limiting health issues or disabilities. Issues which the proposed Woodlands Park Farm facility will help visitors to ease include mental health problems, autism, dementia and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Each holiday lodge will specifically cater for families who have a member with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The site will also include, for sale, a further 27 lodges which purchasers will be able to adapt to suit their specific requirements. The centrepiece of the development, however, is set to be an agricultural-style barn building which, within its 410-square-metre enclosure, will house various exciting amenities. These include chill/ sensory rooms, an art and craft room, meeting rooms and indoor play areas.
The planning application was submitted by Joe Ridgeon, and the director of the Hexham-based planning consultancy Hedley Planning Services has enthused: “The planners have seen the benefits that this unique farm experience will bring, so we are delighted that the project has been approved.
Outdoor spaces on-site will include farm animals with which visitors will be able to interact. Also open to visitors will be a small petting area home to rabbits and guinea pigs.
“It will contribute significantly to the wellbeing and life experience of hundreds of disadvantaged and disabled people, undoubtedly having a significant impact on their lives and families for years to come.”
A new nature trail will weave through existing woodland, while other outdoor features of the development will include a car park with 50 spaces, including at least 12 disabled bays as well as a turning area where coaches will be able to pick up and drop off visitors.
Woodlands Park Farm’s Ian Adamson has described the project as “hugely important to so many families”, adding: “We have had many letters from families who have taken the time to write and tell us how much our project would mean to them, for which we are hugely grateful.”

We catch up with James Black, the new Town Clerk of Stanley Town Council Who inspires you? I’ve never been one to be inspired by an individual – except, of course, my Mum and Dad. However, I’m very much inspired by “everyday people’s” achievements. Business startups, new initiatives, sporting achievements and good causes all provide the wow factor for me. Throughout my adult life, I have always aspired to do as many things as possible to give me a broad range of experiences. Often, this means I never have any downtime – but, so far, it’s worked quite well and allows me at the very least to say, “Been there, done that, absolutely won’t do it again”. What’s your main goal for Stanley? I think, at this point in my career with Stanley Town Council, it’s difficult for me to put my finger on a single main goal. Like anyone going into a new job, you want to achieve certain things within a given timescale, but the reality is you don’t know what priorities an organisation already has or the obligations it is already signed up to. As an absolute minimum, I would love residents to be absolutely onboard with where the organisation is going – and I believe, using the many forms of communication and consultation at our disposal by making the right decisions for the right reasons and by using the public’s money efficiently and effectively, we can go some way to achieve that. What’s your favourite thing about Stanley? There are so many great things about Stanley, and I really mean that – but the one area that stands out so much is the community spirit. So many great organisations are delivering very important and muchneeded services on a voluntary or not-for-profit basis, and so many great individuals and teams are working for the good of the town, going above and beyond what would normally be expected. It’s a fantastic asset to the town! Where do you see the area in five years’ time? Shining and prospering! Stanley is a great place both for commercial entities and to live in, but it’s no lie that 18 | IN&AROUND
we need investment. Investment drives business, it drives regeneration and it drives house-building. In the meantime, I expect Stanley Town Council to be driving forward with more public services, ensuring the area is one to be proud of, whilst continuing to work with and support our community organisations. How did you get into this job role? I’ve long been interested in the position of town clerk since an ex-colleague of mine more than ten years ago took on a similar role. My interest was massively centred around the influence of the role, what can be achieved and the variance of the role, with so many different duties being involved. It’s only been in the past couple of years that I felt I had the necessary skills and experience to fulfil the role. These skills and experiences have evolved from various different jobs, volunteer work and interests. The position therefore feels almost like fate. What piece of advice would you give to someone who aspires to be a town clerk? Being a town clerk is a varied, busy but rewarding role. Anyone looking to move into the role needs to be fair, open and honest whilst being ready to take the good with the bad. Being full of ideas, with knowledge and experience of delivering also helps. What’s the first thing you want to implement once the town is free of COVID? I have big aspirations for the Civic Hall and its entertainment programme. I want the venue to improve the offer of Stanley. What do you do when you’re not being a town clerk? I try to get some sleep; however, this only tends to happen when Kirsty, my partner, lets me hide away from our four children and two dogs. Grantham On
arrival at Grantham station I saw the sign “Home of the Woodland Trust”, a respected charity to which I applied for a job back in 1993, and I had not visited the town of Grantham since. It’s an East Midlands town through which the Great North Road passed and also the railway since 1850. My journey was on a new LNER Azuma train from Durham, changing at Newark southbound and direct back northbound, although the three compulsory seat reservations were all in a single seat with no window at the end of the carriage. Each time, I moved elsewhere and had a table of four to myself, as like most passengers I prefer a window. Trains to and from were all punctual, and not busy – in fact the lack of cars in the car parks at Durham, Newark and Grantham suggested many car users had taken that mode of transport for their entire journey.
Legend has it that the apple fell on his head in Grantham that helped him to discover gravity get slots later in the day and stay until closing time. Since the grounds of Belton House were closing unusually three hours early at 1400 for a staff meeting (announcing redundancies, sadly), I had just two hours to explore the formal gardens which gave way eastwards to parkland with follies and ponds and finally a large boating lake and dense woodland paths beyond. I missed the largest adventure playground which the NT has before it was early closing time and I took the bus back into town.
Grantham has two very famous former inhabitants. When finished, it will be worth a stay. For evening meal, I elected for fish and chips at the “Relax” restaurant on Westgate, but I do wish the lady there had refrained from repeatedly calling me “babe”. Bill & Ted
Face the Music Oh dear, where to start? Bill & Ted Face the Music is the third instalment in the Bill & Ted series, the former movies (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey) premiering back in 1989 and 1991 respectively. If you don’t remember Bill & Ted, let me jog your memory: ‘dude’, ‘dude’, some time travelling, questionable air guitar gestures, ‘dude’. A sequel to Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, we follow Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) on their journey to saving reality by writing the greatest song of all time before 19:17 hits. Along the way we meet Jesus Christ, The Grim Reaper, Gandhi and Queen Elizabeth I… are you still with me? Realising that they will not be able to write the song in time, Bill and Ted decide to travel to their future in a bid to find the song and save the world, but are continuously hunted by a time-travelling robot called Dennis (Anthony Carrigan) who wants to kill them. Usually, I quite like silly films that push boundaries, but this was 91 minutes of pure and utter nonsense. While it’s evident that Bill & Ted Face the Music tried to recapture the charm of their previous two films, personally I believe they should have left the mind32 | IN&AROUND
boggling plot and one-dimensional main characters back in the ‘90s, where they belong. Only 12 minutes in and I had to wonder if they were trying to beat the record for the most times ‘dude’ has ever been said in a film. It was excessive and quite frankly annoying, to say the least, and it was rather uncomfortable witnessing the word ridiculously overused by two men in their ‘50s. It wasn’t all bad. The mash up of musicians from across the centuries was rather creative and added a sprinkle of interest to an otherwise dull film. When will you ever get another opportunity to see 1960s Jimi Hendrix, 1920s Louis Armstrong, ancient China’s Ling Lun and 2010s Kid Cudi perform together in one band? While Bill & Ted Face the Music had all the ingredients to make an eccentric, exciting and electric film, the cake came out of the oven flat and just tasted plain weird. Would I recommend this film? Sure, if you’re absolutely desperate to get out of the house… dude.

Pumpkin & bacon soup The soft, sweet flesh of the Crown Prince pumpkin is perfect for this silky soup, butternut or onion squash are good alternatives. Prep: 1o mins Cook: 1 hr & 10mins
Ingredients • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 50g butter • 1 onion, finely chopped • 150g maple-cured bacon, cut into small pieces • ½ Crown Prince pumpkin or onion squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into medium chunks (you need about 500g pumpkin flesh) • 1l chicken stock • 100ml double cream • 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds, toasted • maple syrup, for drizzling

Method Step 1
In a large, heavy-bottomed pan, heat the oil with 25g butter. Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook on a low heat for 10 mins or until soft. Add 60g bacon and cook for a further 5 mins until the bacon releases its fat. Then increase the heat to medium, add the pumpkin and stock and season. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer, cover with a lid and cook for about 40 mins until the pumpkin is soft. Pour in the cream, bring to the boil again and remove from the heat. Set aside some of the liquid, then
blend the remaining pumpkin until smooth and velvety, adding liquid back into the pan bit by bit as you go (add more liquid if you like it thinner). Strain through a fine sieve, check the seasoning and set aside.
STEP 2
Melt the remaining butter in a pan over a high heat and fry the rest of the bacon with black pepper for 5 mins. Divide the bacon between four bowls, reheat the soup and pour over. To serve, sprinkle over the pumpkin seeds and drizzle with maple syrup.
