Care Connect supports vulnerable people of all ages, providing a monitoring and response service to people’s homes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering assistance and reassurance whenever it is needed. There is a charge for the service and this will be discussed upon enquiry. If you have a relative, neighbour or friend who is vulnerable or socially isolated, Care Connect could provide a vital service.
The service operates 24/7 so staff are always able to offer support and assistance, dispatch responders to someone’s home or contact the emergency services where necessary.

Refresher driving sessions for older motorists to restart Refresher driving sessions are restarting, giving older drivers a boost in their confidence while on the road. Older drivers might be relieved to know that Durham County Council are restarting their Safer Driving with Age (SAGE) driving assessment. The pause in the programme had to take place due to the coronavirus pandemic, but now it’s back and you can start benefiting.
At the end of the session, the assessor will talk through your driving skills and highlight good practice while identifying any areas for improvement. Participants will receive a copy of the comments made and will later get a full written report, along with their SAGE certificate.
SAGE, which has been designed to help residents over the age of 55 to drive safely as they get older, consists of 40-minute sessions, and allows people to spend valuable time with a qualified driving instructor.
Cllr Elizabeth Scott, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for economy and partnerships, reinforced the need for older drivers to ensure their driving is up to standard, saying: “As motorists with lots of years of experience, many older drivers can spot danger on the road sooner than they could when they were 20. However, over time roads have become busier, new traffic systems have been introduced, and there are many more road markings now”
The sessions aren’t complicated, either. Those who want to get involved can drive their own car along the roads they know well and use regularly. Following that, their instructor will provide feedback on ways they can make their driving safer.
“There are other ways to travel rather than driving, but most people like the freedom of their own car. If you want to continue to drive, it’s very important to keep your driving standards up. SAGE is designed to help people keep driving for as long as possible.”

SAGE has been running successfully in County Durham for many years now, so it’s great to see that it’s finally back for the community to take advantage of. In fact, so many drivers find the sessions so beneficial that they even repeat the experience each year.
With further COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, SAGE has restarted again and is now taking on new applicants.
The assessment can be broken down into three stages: a confirmation of medical history to make sure there is no medical condition preventing you from driving, an eyesight check, and an assessed drive with a friendly driving instructor. 8 | IN&AROUND

Back in September of 2006 I applied for a job as a Telesales Advisor for In&Around magazine based in Chester le Street. September 18th 2021 will mark my 15th year in this role and I can honestly say with my hand on my heart…. I love my job! So much has changed with the magazine since those early days, and we have grown to become North Durham’s favourite FREE independent community magazine - with the largest door to door distribution coverage in the area. I have spoken to thousands of businesses since taking on this job role, and many of those business owners and their staff have become friends over the years. There is no better feeling than helping a business raise their profile by advertising in the magazine and watching them flourish and become successful, but I can’t take all the credit. I work with an amazing team of people and together we make it happen. County Durham’s culture, as seen by its people County Durham’s campaign to be UK City of Culture 2025 is gathering pace. As a result, Durham County Council are asking local people to share pictures of their favourite places. Whether it be the woodland trail where many walk their dogs, a favourite coffee shop or a local venue that staged an amazing live music gig – residents are being asked to share the places that make their home special. Durham County Council want to create a visual record of County Durham, showcasing some hidden gems and local haunts through the eyes of the people. The aim is to show that these things are just as important as our spectacular views and world heritage sites. The bid for UK City of Culture was submitted last month by Durham County Council, on behalf of Culture Durham. A successful bid is anticipated to significantly boost tourism to the area, as well as secure more investment into the county, improving economic and employment opportunities. Culture Durham are ready to get the ball rolling, with local organisations like Beamish, Durham Cathedral, Durham University and Locomotion all selecting some of their favourite views and places. Locals can share their photographs on social media using #Durham2025 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The Chair of Culture Durham, Tony Harrington encouraged residents to get involved, saying “We all have places that uplift and inspire us; special spaces where it almost feels like time 18 | IN&AROUND

We know Durham is no ordinary county; it is full of extraordinary people and places. Theatre is back in County Durham Durham County Council has completed renovation work at Gala Durham and Empire Consett, which have both now reopened to the public. Over the last year, Empire Consett saw a £823,000 refurbishment of the auditorium and front of house area, as well as a new stage and technical equipment. Meanwhile, Gala Durham has had a £600,000 refurbishment, fitted with new flooring and seating in the auditorium, as well as a new-look box office, display screens, signage, and furniture. Both venues have introduced a brand-new menu for their respective cafes, with food being served daily including brunch and afternoon tea. Empire Consett is gearing up for their first live stage performance in almost two years with The Carpenters Story on Saturday 18 September. This highly acclaimed concert style production continues to captivate audiences across the UK with its spectacular celebration of the classic songbook that made The Carpenters a legend in the world of popular music, selling over 100 million albums and singles. Tickets are now on sale for the theatre’s annual smash hit pantomime which is on stage from Saturday 27 November to Friday 31 December. Lingually Displaced Canines Lingually displaced canines are a congenital problem that is becoming more and more common in practice, where the lower baby canine teeth grow inside, rather than outside, the upper jaw. It is seen predominately in young puppies. It is an inherited problem and can be passed on if affected dogs are bred from. Puppies with lingually displaced canines are advised to have the lower baby canines removed as soon as possible. There are three reasons for this: • These teeth are sharp and hitting the soft tissues of the palate. These pups cannot close their mouth without pain and often hold the mouth slightly open to avoid contact. • If the lower canines are embedded in pits in the hard palate, the normal growth of the jaw
cannot take place normally. This can cause deviation of the skull or bowing of the lower jaw. • If the baby lower canines are left in a poor position it is a certainty the permanent teeth will be worse. For these reasons it is advisable to surgically remove the lower canine teeth as soon as possible to allow maximum time between the surgery and the time the permanent teeth erupt at between 22 and 24 weeks of age. Surgical removal of the baby canines will not guarantee the problem does not happen again when the adult teeth erupt but without surgery the chances are very slim.

Let’s Talk About Dementia September is World Alzheimer’s Month and the theme this year is ‘Let’s Talk About Dementia’. Over 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, and this is set to rise to over a million by 2025. What is dementia? For anyone who may not know, dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive conditions that affect the brain. Dementia damages the nerve cells in the brain so messages can no longer be sent effectively, preventing the brain from functioning normally. The most common sub-types of dementia are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies. Dementia can affect a person at any age but is most diagnosed in people over 65. No matter what type of dementia a person is diagnosed with, and which part of the brain it affects, everyone experiences the disease differently. Common symptoms of dementia include memory problems, struggling to process information, having difficulty communicating, and experiencing changes to mood and behaviour. A dementia diagnosis is lifechanging, and not just for the recipient. Friends, family, and other loved ones can also be impacted. This 34 | IN&AROUND

It’s time to talk about dementia Dementia is one of the biggest challenges we face around the globe, as nearly 50 million people live with dementia worldwide. We need to work together to tackle this global dementia challenge and collaborate to share best practices with one another. Together, we must break the silence around dementia this month, and support each other in making this a reality. On World Alzheimer’s Day, which takes place on the 21st of September, The Alzheimer’s Society is urging everyone to join the conversation and become a Dementia Friend. The Dementia Friends programme is a huge initiative to change people’s perception of dementia. The aim is to transform the way we think, act, and talk about the condition. Becoming a Dementia Friend means learning more about dementia, understanding how someone with the condition lives and turning understanding into action. Perhaps that’s visiting someone you know with dementia, or even something simple like being more patient with someone in a shop. The best and most important thing you can do is get involved with World Alzheimer’s Day on the 21st of September. It’s time to join the conversation and break down misconceptions around dementia.

nnan is the first authentic Scottish town beyond the border. You can get a real sense of being “abroad” in an authentic Scottish town, which now has its own distillery producing again after a gap of around 100 years. Split your ticket at Newcastle, from where there is a £24 off-peak day return. From Chester-le-Street it’s £53.70 which you can cut in half by splitting. The initial welcome to Annan can be quite disconcerting. Coming out of the station and heading straight ahead north into the town, you come across an abandoned, but Category C listed, derelict edifice, formerly known as the Central Hotel. Pineapple fried rice Add chunks of fresh pineapple to fried rice to transform it into something special. Serve on its own for a family dinner, or as part of a Chinese banquet Prep: 10 mins

Cooking time: 10 mins
Directions STEP 1 1 Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok. Add the eggs, swirling them up the sides, to make a thin omelette. Once cooked through, roll the omelette onto a chopping board and cut into ribbons. STEP 2 Heat the remaining oil. Add the garlic, onions and five-spice. Stir-fry until sizzling, then add the rice (if using pouches, squeeze them first, to separate the grains), peas, sesame oil and soy. Cook over a high heat until the rice is hot, then stir through the pineapple and omelette ribbons.
Ingredients 1½ tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil 2 eggs , beaten 2 garlic cloves, crushed small bunch of spring onions , chopped 1⁄2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder 400g cooked long-grain rice 85g frozen peas 2 tsp sesame oil 2 tbsp low-salt soy sauce 400g fresh pineapple , roughly chopped into chunks (about 1⁄2 medium pineapple)

Local businessman provides ‘back to school’ packs for struggling families Local roofing company director, Grant Findley, has been working hard to bring his highly successful 2018 ‘Kool 4 Skool’ project into 2021. The idea behind the plan is to help struggling families equip their children with all the necessary items for the new school year. The team at the Hartlepool-based roofing company, Findley Roofing, worked alongside their director to produce a total of 60 ‘back to school’ packs for a chosen infant school, a junior school, and a secondary school in the North East Region – 20 packs per school. Each trendy backpack will include fundamental school supplies such as stationery, a water bottle, and a clothing voucher. The end of the summer holidays marks a frantic time for parents as they scramble to get the equipment and clothing items needed for the new school year – and as many of us will know, none of this comes cheap. This project should therefore provide some well-needed relief. The business doesn’t shy from charity work The business, which offers its roofing services right across the region, is no stranger to charity work and giving back to the community. The ‘Kool 4 School’ project is just one of a few that the company has worked hard to ensure the North East benefits from. This one is slightly different, however, as it’s close to Grant Findley’s heart. The director said: “My mum was a lone parent who worked night and day to bring up three of us in Tyneside. She did so much for us and gave us everything, but I still felt a little sad at the start of term when I saw lots of the other kids with their brand-new gear. “I didn’t understand all the sacrifices she made then although she taught me how important education was, a lesson which I learned and I pass on to everyone I meet. Parents have so much on these days like putting food on the table and keeping the lights on that they might not be able to get the latest shoes and bags the kids need.

“This is where we want to help and give back. We have put together the ‘Kool 4 Skool’ packs and vouchers to help struggling families and lone parents kit their kids out and start school with a spring in their step. “We can’t help everyone in the North East but we can help some people and that’s what we’d like to do. A new coat or bag might not be a major purchase for every family but for some children it can be a magical feeling and give them the boost they need to really succeed at school – who knows where that could take them?”

FREE GUY Free Guy follows the tale of a bank teller who goes about his ordinary life – every day the same. There’s just one thing – he is actually a background player (or NPC for you gamers) in an open-world video game. Diverging from his prewritten narrative, he discovers a world with no limits as he tries to save his world before it is too late. Ryan Reynolds’ casting as Guy is utter perfection, his visual humour and comedic timing truly brings the character to life and a smile to your face. He is joined by Killing Eve alum Jodie Comer who never fails to impress with her effortless switches between accents and emotions. As with most Ryan Reynolds’ films, if you are looking for an intricate plotline and sincerity, this is not it! It’s daft, silly, and downright weird. However, Free Guy does attempt to have an emotionally rich sub-plot running parallel to the main narrative. Unfortunately for these characters, though, this is the only place that Free Guy slightly misses the mark. In fact, despite Joe Keery being one of the top billed actors, his embodiment of Keys completely fades into the background. Due to this, if you blink you might miss some excellently written quips and witty one liners that deserved better delivery. But the star of the show is Channing Tatum. Though a small part, Tatum’s character packs a comedic punch and is guaranteed to have you laughing out loud. Coupled with the sheer ridiculous52 | IN&AROUND
ness of his every scene, and the impeccable juxtaposition of his counterpart, Matty Cardarople (of A Series of Unfortunate Events fame), Tatum definitely cuts his comedy chops in this film. With thematic parallels to everything from The Matrix to The Truman Show to The Lego Movie, this film is chaotic, goofy, and truly irresistible. It leans into its bizarre premise, transporting you into their world that you can’t help but find both silly and sweet. Though it might be a bit of a mess, its chaotic energy proves for a fantastic time full of laughter, popcorn munching, and an intoxicating expedition into an unknown world. The ensemble cast is enough to lift everyone’s spirits, with voice cameos from many famous Hollywood actors. Look out for the ‘Easter Eggs’ that are dotted throughout the movie from a range of different film franchises, and the fantastically self-aware jokes that just touch on social critique. Free Guy might not be the kind of movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat, but it will certainly have you falling off the seat and rolling on the floor laughing – the perfect feel-good movie.
