Everything You Need to Know About Nurses If you are looking to become a nurse, there are some things you need to know before jumping into the field. Nursing is tough, and that is putting it lightly. You would never have thought that you would have to do some of the things that you have to do. Everything Smells This may not always be a pleasant thing. Rather, most of the time it will not be pleasant at all. This is where ear loop masks come in handy. You will get used to the smells eventually, but it might take some time to stop being squeamish about it. Tears Will Fall Being a nurse is tough. Not only do you have to deal with your life and the usual work drama, but you have to worry about patients whose lives might be on the line. You might cry because you lost a patient, or because got yelled at by an angry family member, or you may encounter a moment where your patient gets angry with you. Whatever the case may be, nursing is an emotional career where you build real relationships and go through a lot of daily struggles. The Responsibility Responsibility is something that every person working in healthcare needs to have. Being accountable for your actions and knowing what is appropriate and when is up to you. If you choose to ignore responsibility your patients will suffer due to your negligence. You can, in turn, lose your license and never be able to work in nursing again. This is probably the most important thing to remember. Know what you are responsible for and what you have to do and never forget it. Letting yourself miss one thing can mean life or death for someone. If you cannot handle this kind of responsibility, nursing may not be the career for you. Solidarity

Telling nursing stories to your non-nursing friends can just fall flat. They do not understand what you have to go through every day, and can only have sympathy for you. As a nurse, it is important to have a group of others who understand your profession and can not only sympathize, but have experienced similar, if not the same, situations. Do Not Expect a 'Thank You' Nurses are often overlooked and underappreciated. Most people do not realize that nurses are the glue that keeps the workplace together. Even so, being positive and going the extra mile for your patients is more important than gratefulness. You have made a career out of caring for people, so people expect you to do your job. Do not let that get you down, for it can be disheartening to realize how people really feel. The blame will often be placed on you since you are 'just a nurse' but letting it get to you will not change their opinion. Being a nurse is hard work. It takes patience, dedication, passion, and a caring disposition to be able to handle each day. Be sure to keep it together even with the rough times ahead of you. Nursing requires strength and a strong stomach, but if you got this far, you are probably on the right track.
