Outdoor Theatre Season at The Bishop’s Palace, Wells

Be a hero!

July – August 2019

Help raise money for Dorothy House Hospice Care

This Summer, let yourself be entertained in the picturesque surroundings of The Bishop’s Palace in Wells, with a choice of fabulous outdoor theatre performances.

Our Hospice Care Hero Walk takes place on 7 September and is an exciting NEW event in the stunning grounds of the Newton Park, Bath Spa University Campus with lakes, a castle and beautiful views. Participants can choose a 1km, 5km or 10km route that passes through exciting hero-themed zones. Dress up as your favourite superhero, use the walk to remember a special hero in your life or walk to celebrate the heroes providing care at Dorothy House.

Held on the South Lawn, with a backdrop of the 13th century ruins of the Great Hall, it’s the perfect combination for a memorable night out. This year’s programme kicks off in July with a visit from Palace favourites The Pantaloons. On 5th July they will bring their vibrant sense of fun to Jane Austen’s classic ‘Sense and Sensibility’. This funny, fast-paced and faithful new adaptation from the critically-acclaimed Pantaloons Theatre Company features live music, audience interaction, romance and heartbreak. Later in the month, on Sunday 28th July, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men present their authentic version of Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Celebrating 425 years since the original company was created, and the 15th birthday of the modern troupe, this brilliant company will perform Shakespeare as he intended it to be seen; all male, in the open air and in full Elizabethan costume with traditional music and dance. Enjoy this supernatural comedy of mischievous fairies, confused lovers and rude mechanicals in an intoxicating tale of clarity found from chaos, as tangled love gives way to happily ever afters! On Sunday 4th August, Boxtree Productions bring ‘The Legend of King Arthur’ to the 13th century Palace in a match made in heaven of medieval folklore on the ancient isle of Avalon. Arthur discovers his prophecy; destined to pull the sword from the stone and unite Britain. With Merlin and his Knights by his side, will Arthur be able to reunite Britain and thwart the evil plans of Morgan le Fay? This production is suitable for all the family and includes original songs and magical storytelling to keep all ages entranced. To finish the season, join Heartbreak Productions on Friday 16th August for an adaptation of Emily Bronte’s ‘Wuthering Heights’, a haunting tale of two restless souls as wild and untamed as the bleak Yorkshire moors. A tale of love and passionate bonds; when the lovers are driven apart by Cathy’s ambition for social elevation, Heathcliff turns vengeful and sets out to enact a torturous scheme of revenge on the next generation of Earnshaws. All productions begin at 6:30pm and audiences are invited to bring a picnic blanket or low-backed seating along with their own picnic and drinks. The performances will take place regardless of the weather, so do dress appropriately! For further details and ticket prices visit www.bishopspalace.org.uk

Why get involved?

There’s a myth that hospices are just places to die. In truth, our job is to help everyone live their life to its fullest potential. By connecting with people earlier after their diagnosis, we can help them achieve their personal goals – no matter how big or small. We believe in creating memories and encourage people to explore their wishes, thoughts and fears so they can make informed plans for themselves and their loved ones. For us, a ‘good death’ means leaving the world at peace, with dignity and supported by compassionate care. To help people achieve the best death possible, we provide outstanding care and support, when it matters most. Our work touches so many lives and is completely free of charge. Without heroes like you, Dorothy House Hospice Care simply couldn’t operate. Our goal is to help more people and deliver care when it’s really needed by patients and their families.

Your sponsorship in action:

£28 could pay for an hour’s time of a Nurse Specialist, delivering care to patients in our community. £180 could pay for a full night of a Hospice at Home carer’s time, allowing a patient’s family to get some much-needed rest. Or why not get a team together and set yourself a goal of raising £2500 all together and this could provide 24 hours of nursing and health care assistant’s time on our Inpatient Unit.

Komedia interview

about how someone with this accent doesn't often get treated seriously, I imagine many Westcountry folk will relate to that and I want to start being taken seriously. It's a wider conversation on how the UK has a huge class divide and how that might affect ones upbringing and affect the way they may behave. Don't worry, it'll be very funny as well. What (or who) got you into comedy? My favourite comedians are; George Carlin, Richard Prior, Hans Teeuwen, Bo Burnham, Maria Bamford, Steve Hughes, Norm MacDonald, Joe Rogen - watching and listening to these guys got me into comedy for sure. My current favourite British stand ups are: Kerry Godliman, Zoe Lyons, Tom Allen, Sean Lock, Phil Wang and Ricky Gervais. How would you describe your comedy? That's a hard question to answer, I often think an act like me hasn't existed before. Unique?. Also I'm always funny but I'm also ever evolving. Observational, absurd, surprising. I actually found that really easy. Did getting nominated for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe 2016 give you the confidence to make people laugh as a career?

Jayde Adams

Brizzly Adams Award-winning comedian and proud Bristolian Jayde Adams is an uncut gem; a force of nature; dangerous and unafraid; the future.. it’s safe to say that when Dawn French says “Jayde Adams is the 3rd funniest woman in the world. It’s great to see you back in the westcountry. Is it always special to come back to the area to perform? Of course it is! Although I haven't lived in Bristol since I was 18. People are so surprised that I've "kept the accent." I remind them I'm not pretentious, so of course I would because it's who I am, I haven't changed since I was a kid. I also lived in Wales for 10 years, which is where I went to Glamorgan Uni (don't be impressed I spent £20,000 on learning how to play Zip Zap Boing, also the Uni doesn't exist anymore) but didn't pick up the accent but in my new show I tell a story about calling the Welsh police station

You’ve described yourself as an ‘Octuplethreat’. If you weren’t doing comedy, which other ‘threat’ would you be doing? Opera or rap or drawing probably but there's none of that in this years show so don't get excited. I'll be doing it again but this year I'm taking myself out of my comfort zone and there will be no bells and whistles. Just me, a mic and something I want to say.

which showcases my incredible South Wales impression of a Police Officer I spoke to.

Is this something you still do, or would like to do in the future?

Does coming from the area make it easier to connect to a local audience and do you feel the South West has its own unique sense of humour?

I'd love to be a singer but I'll be honest, there's nothing better than being a comedian.

I can connect with anyone anywhere, that's what my job is all about. I gig all over the country, so I have a story for every town I visit pretty much. That always helps at the top of a show if you show the audience you care about their town and of course I have some great material on Bristol. But this years show isn't about Bristol. It's more

Of course it did. Getting awards always makes you feel like you're doing something well but its not the only way to do it. You literally just got to be undeniably funny and / or really good at admin. Admin is 75% of this job.

What is the best thing about being a comedian? The travelling, the applause, the laughter, the connection, the people, the acceptance, the freedom, the adrenalin, the surprise, the madness, the adoration, the solitude, the control, the ownership, the highs, the lows, the love the companionship. I'm so lucky to get the do this. Thank you to everyone that comes to watch me.

One of the UK’s best-loved actresses, Felicity Kendal stars in a brand new production of William Boyd’s comedy The Argument which opens at the Theatre Royal Bath appearing from Wednesday 7th August to Saturday 24th August as part of the Summer Season. Best-selling novelist and screenwriter William Boyd’s darkly funny play is a blistering look at the complexities of human relationships and how arguments can provide a catalyst for brutal honesty. Now it’s turned into an argument – the perfect opportunity to share their differences. With their marriage at breaking point, they turn to their respective friends, Jane and Tony. Best remembered for his performances as Mr Banks in Disney’s classic Mary Poppins, David Tomlinson was renowned for playing the classic English gent, forthright, proper, and a loveable fool. His meeting with Walt Disney came to encapsulate his incredible life full of adventure and heartbreak. The man who portrayed one of cinema’s most famous patriarchs was defined by his relationship with his own father – a remote eccentric, who was hiding an extraordinary tragicomic secret. Written by James Kettle and starring Miles Jupp, this wonderfully entertaining and richly comic performance tells a moving tale of fathers and sons across different

what's on interview "I

love doing a play and four weeks in Bath it's like a jewel. After four weeks I know I’ll be going ‘Oh, I want to do more!"

Jennifer Saunders

Jennifer Saunders is one of the UK’s most popular comic actresses. The role of one of Noël Coward’s best loved characters, the preposterous clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, is perfectly suited to her extraordinary talents. Performing at the Bath Theatre Royal until July 6th, Blithe Spirt promises to be one of the theatrical highlights of the year. Here, Jennifer talks about the role as well as her career to date. What appealed to you about taking on the role of Madame Arcati?

and go ‘Ooh, I loved Girls On Top’ and I’m thinking ‘Bloody hell, even I’ve forgotten about that!’

It’s one of those classic comedy roles for a woman of a certain age, which are few and far between, so it was a no-brainer. I’ve never worked with [director] Richard Eyre before and he has such a fantastic reputation and he’s such a brilliant director, so I thought it’d be great to do it. And also it’s four weeks in Bath, which is about as nice as you can get in the summer, I think.

How will your Madame Arcati be dressed?

Madame Arcati has been played by many formidable performers over the years. How are you making the character your own?

I think there’s probably a scientific explanation for everything ultimately and also there’s something in our brains, you know? I don’t think it’s supernatural, I think it’s probably natural.

I think I must have seen Margaret Rutherford in the film but a long time ago so I don’t have any other influences. It just sort of happens as you go through the text and think ‘Ooh, let’s do that’. And everyone has their own different way of doing comedy. Every actor is different.

Is this your first time doing a Noel Coward play?

Do you have anything in common with her? [Laughs] I haven’t noticed any commonality, no. She does like a good sandwich so I think we’re quite similar in that respect. A dry martini and a sandwich is her idea of heaven and actually mine too. What challenges does the role present? It goes into different energies. There’s a time where they think she’s a fool and you think she’s a fool, then you realise she isn’t at all. It’s quite hard to allow that to come across. She goes through a lot of different phases in the play and it’s not pure comedy either. The first time I read it I thought ‘That’s quite nice’ and the second time I read it I thought ‘It’s rather good’ and now I think ‘It’s a terrific play’. It’s about so many things. He [Noel Coward] makes it look easy because the dialogue is quite easy but actually it’s so dense and there’s so much in it. You’ve played your share of eccentric characters. Are they more fun to play? They’re terrifically good fun to play and it’s nice that you don’t have to play any vanity to them at all. Making people laugh is honestly the best fun in the world and I like people who make me laugh so it’s like doing a job you appreciate. Edina Monsoon is probably the most famous of your eccentric characters but what do the public recognise you from?

She’s somewhere between Hilda Baker and Barbara Woodhouse, I would say. She’s quite tweedy. She’s quite jolly and gung-ho so she’s fairly tweedy. Do you believe in the supernatural?

It is, yes. I’ve only done two plays before this - Me And Mamie O’Rourke, which I did with Dawn [French] in the early 90s, and Lady Windermere’s Fan in 2018. With Noel Coward the language is easy and it’s so close to our present-day language but they invert words. There are also times where you think ‘What was that word again? Is it dreadfully rather than fearfully?’ I panic about learning lines but the other characters in the play - God, they’ve got an enormous amount of lines. I take my bits out of the script and I look at the great wadge that’s left that they have to say and I think ‘Honestly, I really shouldn’t complain. They take the brunt of it’. What do you think makes Blithe Spirit so enduring? Because it can be set anywhere at any time. It’s about love and relationships and death and grieving and the supernatural and it’s funny. It’s also got a small cast, which is always useful, it means people can put it on a lot, and it’s set in one room. It’s a perfect little play really. You mentioned you hadn’t worked with Richard Eyre before. How is the experience? Oh, he’s fantastic. Like anyone who’s brilliant, he just makes it seem very comfortable and easy as if they’re doing nothing at all but they are. It’s quite good to want to impress someone so you’re thinking ‘Come on, be better, be better!’ You never get over the idea of being a bit nervous and wanting to make someone laugh. Having done Lady Windermere’s Fan in the West End and now Blithe Spirt at the Theatre Royal Bath, do you have a new love for theatre?

I love doing a play and four weeks in Bath it's like a jewel. After four weeks I know I’ll be going ‘Oh, I want to do more!’ It depends where you are really. I could meet anyone under but I’m not sure about doing, say, 12 weeks - although with 30 who wouldn’t know who I was from Adam. There’s so many this cast I know I’m really going to miss it after a short run. different things. I’m always amazed when people come up What put me off before was when the kids were growing up

inbath 19

It’s just different now, I think. It’s harder to make jokes. People seem so sensitive about everything. You say the wrong word and people are down on you whereas before you could generally make fun and everyone realised you were making a joke. I don’t think we could make half of Ab Fab nowadays, with all the sensitivities and the ‘Ooh, do you think you should be doing this or saying that?’ Do you think the levity and fun of Blithe Spirit is something audiences need now? Yes, absolutely. It’s very much a period piece and of-its-time, but even though it was written in 1941 it doesn’t mention the Second World War so you could actually set it whenever you like. It’s sort of in its own world. You’ve had such a varied career. What have been your highlights across stage and screen? The second series of Ab Fab because we’d gotten into our stride and were thinking ‘We’ve gotten away with it!’ and we had the best fun ever. Then there’s most of French And Saunders and the second series in particular. The second series is always the best so the second series of French And Saunders, second series of Ab Fab. And I loved doing Jam & Jerusalem. It was one of the nicest things ever. Also I love being on stage. I love live work. We’ve done lots of tours of just me and Dawn and I’ve always loved that. I like doing the shows but I also like the rehearsals, I like working something up. Collaboration is always a joy. Like working with the cast of Blithe Spirit now - it’s just so much fun and we have such a laugh. Do you have any dream theatre roles?

"I hear they’re making a musical of The Devil Wears Prada so I’m thinking the Meryl Streep role would be a good one. I heard about it and thought ‘Gosh, I’d lose a few stone for that!" the last thing you wanted was to get them home from school, do all the stuff at home and then go off to the theatre. [Laughs] Just when normal people are sitting down to a gin and tonic you start work. Have you visited Bath before? Oh yes and I love it. It’s one of my favourite places so I can’t wait to be back there. I love the colour of the stone, the setting and how unspoilt it is. It’s just heaven. It’s a beautiful city and you can get into the countryside quickly. There are all those beautiful villages around, valleys and places to go. It really is heaven. Have you seen shows at the Theatre Royal Bath? I’ve been to the theatre twice before, I think, and it’s absolutely beautiful. I think it will have its own atmosphere for a performer. When it comes to theatre, do you have any pre-show rituals?

20 inbath

Well, I hear they’re making a musical of The Devil Wears Prada so I’m thinking the Meryl Streep role would be a good one. I heard about it and thought ‘Gosh, I’d lose a few stone for that!’

I’ve noticed that I have to stop looking at my iPad an hour before I go on stage. It’s very tempting to go ‘I’ll just read some emails or play a game or something’ in that hour before but you absolutely can’t, otherwise everything goes from your brain and you’re thinking ‘Hang on a minute, what’s that word? What’s that speech?’ So for me it’s a matter of getting in there and starting to go through the lines, relaxing, making your mind concentrate. We never used to have all these modern technology things. You used to read a paper or listen to some music but I think screens are very bad. Do you find it easy to shake off a character when the curtain falls? [Laughs] Before the curtains falls. No, I’m joking! Absolutely joking. But gosh, yes - it’s comedy! You’ve worked in comedy for more than three decades. How do you feel the landscape has changed?

Swallow Street Spa Buildings brought to life by new exciting website… Bath Spa University students were tasked with creating a digital interpretation of the Victorian Spa and Laundry, once housed by the buildings on Swallow Street. The buildings, now transforming into the Roman Baths Learning Centre and World Heritage Centre as a part of the Archway Project, first opened as a Spa and Laundry in the late 1800s. The website draws upon a wealth of information from visitor experiences of the site throughout its establishment. Documents from Bath Record Office created a foundation for many of the images which can be viewed on the website, and linked Pinterest boards, for further exploration into Bath’s Victorian spa heritage. Pooling together stories from various historic materials, the students have created a timeline of local stories from first-hand accounts. The Timeline highlights the experiences of individuals near and far, dating back as far as 1894 from an international visit by the Prince of Monaco! As well as attracting distant visitors, the Swallow Street spa and laundry buildings also have an inherent connection to the local community of Bath. With locals such as Anne Twitchett sharing her stories as a young girl stopping by at the laundry after school, and as a former worker at the Mineral Hospital, the website focuses on the systematic and the social aspects of the buildings. These stories act as an experience into the history of the site, which can be explored through the audio recordings created and performed by Bath Spa students. Explore the evolution of the city through the interactive ‘History Map’, to see what Bath would have looked like from 1572 to the present day. Compare the past to the present by exploring the overlaid maps, to get a better understanding of the developments that have occurred in the local area, and interact with Bath’s heritage landscape by following the ‘Selfie Trail’ map. Follow @BathVicSpa on Twitter and Instagram to watch the development of the Student’s project and explore the finished product on their live website at bathvictorianspa.co.uk

Discover and understand the history of the Victorian Spa buildings. Through stories, audio recoding and images you can explore the 19th century heritage of the spa quarter and see how this period of Bath shaped the city around us. Explore the hidden history through maps and images of Bath in this period. Listen to stories or read the transcripts of those who lived and visited Bath and their experiences of the Victorian Spa. what's on What acts are playing this year at the racecourse? “As we’re part of a bigger racecourse Group, we’ve been able to book some fantastic headline acts in recent years. Previously, we’ve had the likes of UB40, James Blunt and Tom Grennan performing and this year we’re really excited to have 80s charttoppers, The Human League, here on Saturday 14 September.

A summer of great racing and outstanding live music comes to Bath Racecourse Summer seems to have finally arrived and Bath is buzzing with the sound of live music. There seems to be a lot of music events on offer but for a music concert with a difference, why not try a unique trip to one of Bath Racecourse’s music events? We spoke to Executive Director Jo Hall to find out what can you expect at one of the racecourse’s live music nights. How did the racecourse start putting on music events? “We’ve been staging live music after racing for more than 15 years. Despite being the second biggest spectator sport in the UK, horseracing has always been keen to attract new audiences. Staging live music is a great way of getting new people to experience the sport who have never been.” What can people expect at one of Bath Racecourse’s music concerts? “Well, before the music there’s the racing for everyone to enjoy! A large portion of people that visit us on music nights are new to watching live horseracing. They might have watched the Grand National but watching live racing is a whole different experience. There’s such a great atmosphere; it’s a real buzz hearing the crowd cheering home their horses. “After the racing has finished, the live music starts. We have an open-air stage past one of the Grandstands so there’s a festival-vibe. Everyone is up dancing and singing along. The live music normally lasts between one to two hours and there’s plenty of bars and food outlets for people to stay refreshed.

“Somerset band The Wurzels have been a regular fixture here for more than 10 years, performing at our hugely popular Super Cider Saturday in August. They are a great band that our customers absolutely love. The combination of racing, cider and The Wurzels is a winning combination in the West Country! “We also regularly have different tribute bands performing for various themedracenights, which are great as they play loads of songs that people really know and love. I’m particularly looking forward to our new Festival of Legends event on Friday 2 August when we have three acts performing – Queen, David Bowie and George Michael. Any top tips for people visiting who’ve never been? Come early enough to enjoy the racing first and book your tickets in advance as you save a bit more money.

Antoine Beauvillers

A brief history of fine dining The first recognised restaurant can be traced back to the 18th Century and the French Revolution. In 1765, A. Boulanger, a soup vendor, hung a sign over his business, which offered a choice of soups and broths for health. The name of his shop was 'restorative' or restaurant. In 1782, the first luxury restaurant, 'La Grande Taverne de Loudres', opened its doors in Paris. Owned by Antoine Beauvillers , this innovative restauranteur combined for essential principles - superior cooking - an elegant room - smart waiters and a cellar of wine. Beauvillers is also credited in introducing the first Maitre'ds, offering advice on certain dishes as well as giving diners suggestions on the perfect wine combinations. As the Revolution gripped France during the late 18th century, the falling of the aristocracy - who would generally dine in the privacy of their estates, employing some of the best chefs in the country - meant that many chefs and cooks were unemployed. Those that escaped the guillotine, either started their own restaurants or started working for restaurants. In 1804, only a few short decades after the disruption, Paris itself had 500 restaurants. Although the middle classes, and the falling aristocracy, could no longer afford their own chef and waiting staff, they still pined for the dining experience that they had been used to. Some clever entrepreneurs set up some Fine Dining restaurants to allow this emerging class to fulfill their fantasies. Offering the four principles that Antoine Beauvillers had established 30 years earlier, these aristocratic wanabees were able to dine like royalty - as frequently as their finances would permit. As these restaurants became more popular, chefs became household names and their popularity grew. Restaurants were able to impove the dining experience by bringing in fine china and cutlery, and tablecloths - offering reservations. All these aspects are now synonymous with modern day fine dining.

Eggnog custard tart and port poached pear

Avocados and Eggs with Seasame Seeds and Walnut bread

Avocado & eggs are a great combination for a nutritious yet tasty start to the day. This simple recipe is my take on the dish and has quickly become a favourite on our breakfast menu. With the two perfectly poached eggs served with the avocado on a lightly charred slice of walnut toast, I use fresh baby coriander and toasted seeds to cut through the creaminess of the avocado, adding a great contrast to the dish. Give it a try at home for a tasty weekend brunch! In a small frying pan, toast a handful of mixed seeds over a medium heat for 1-2 minutes. Place a griddle pan on the hob on a mediumhigh heat. Brush bread slices with olive oil on both sides and toast for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until lightly charred. Crack the eggs into individual cups. Using a spoon, stir the water in the pan to create a whirl pool. Gently poor the eggs one at a time into the simmering water in one fluid movement. Leave for 2 minutes and then remove with a slotted spoon.

Ingredients: (2 servings)

2 slices walnut bread 2 ripe avocados 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 4 eggs Few sprigs of fresh baby coriander Mixture of sesame seeds Pumpkin seeds 2tsp lime juice

METHOD:

Fill a large pan with water and bring to a gentle simmer; season with a pinch of sea salt.

38 inbath

Cut the avocados in half. Remove the stone, and scoop out the flesh from one avocado into a bowl. Add a pinch of salt & pepper and the lime juice. With the back side of a spoon, roughly smash the avocado, until chunky but spreadable. Slice the remaining avocado lengthways into 5mm pieces. Spread the walnut bread toasts with the smashed avocado, and top with the fresh avocado slices. Place two of the poached eggs on each slice.

To Garnish:

Serves 4

Ingredients:

For the eggnog 9 x Egg yolks ž pint of Double cream 12oz castor sugar 2 x fl oz dark rum 2 fl oz brandy Large pinch of ground nutmeg Pinch of salt 4 x 9cm sweet pastry cases (pre baked)

METHOD:

Lightly whisk the egg yolks with the sugar. Boil the cream and then add this to the egg yolks. Whisk in the rum and brandy and then pass through a sieve. Pour the mixture into to the pre- baked pastry cases, dust with the nutmeg and bake for approximately 25 – 30 minutes on 100 degrees Celsius (210 Farenheit)

Ingredients:

For the pears 2 x large cored and peeled pears 100 ml red wine 100 ml port 25ml lemon juice 100 g sugar 3 star anise 6 cloves 1 cinnamon stick

METHOD:

Place the red wine, port, lemon juice, sugar star anise, cloves and cinnamon stick into a large pan and bring to the boil. Add the peeled and cored pears. Poach gently together until tender. Remove from the heat and cool all ingredients together.

Presentation:

Garnish with a generous pinch of the toasted seeds, and a few springs of baby coriander.

Slightly glaze the tart with a blowtorch, serve with clotted cream, a little fruit sauce and the pears sliced in to wedges.

As well as our newest inn, The Griffin Inn, located only minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Bath’s city centre. Our pubs are popular with walkers and cyclists, dog walkers and families. We have a smokehouse in the garden at The Inn at Freshford where we smoke meats, vegetables and cheese, to produce delicious smoked ingredients to be used throughout our menus. The Griffin Inn is situated in the heart of Bath and puts you right on the doorstep of everything that we have to offer. ArtBar

There’s a perception that bars in hotels are for residents only. This is absolutely not the case at ArtBar at Abbey Hotel. Refurbished in May and bringing its name to life, ArtBar is redefined and offers a central location for a variety of uses. A place to meet friends for coffee. Just 5 minutes from Bath Spa train and bus station and around the corner from Abbey Square and the shops of central Bath, the bar offers and relaxed and peaceful venue to meet friends for coffee. A place to work. With many people working from home or having flexible working opportunities, sometimes it’s difficult to find the right environment to set up the laptop and crack on with the tasks in hand. Power sockets, USB charging and comfortable table space, not to mention the table service so that you do not need to leave your things whilst you queue for a coffee, ArtBar is the ideal place to work, arrange to meet business contacts and ensure a productive day in the ‘office’.

eople often categorise restaurants. Not by the food type, style or the location, but the reason why they would visit. A bite to eat with a friend before powering on to the next set of shops, a leisurely lunch and glass of wine to catch up with a family member. May be an afternoon tea to share with a friendship group – with or without the champagne! And then there’s the evening meal, sometimes relaxed and possibly a spur of the moment dinner out, or something planned in the diary with an outfit specially selected. Koffmann & Mr. White’s stylish yet unpretentious interior, friendly service and most importantly, real food done well, allow the visitor to choose their ideal category for this brasserie. Centrally located in the Georgian setting of North Parade, a stone’s throw from Bath Abbey in one direction and the train station in the other, the English French brasserie is a world first. Creators Marco Pierre White and his tutor and friend of over 30 years, Pierre Koffmann have collaborated to bring to Bath the best of English and French classic cuisine. An extensive cocktail list, a good selection of wines by the glass alongside prosecco and champagne for those special moments, ArtBar has everything for an enjoyable drink with friends, family or colleagues. With prices that certainly are not out of place in the city of Bath, ArtBar should become one of your goto places to enjoy your favourite tipple. Whatever your reason for stopping by this central hub, ArtBar offers a fresh, vibrant and ever-changing backdrop for your enjoyment.

La Marca di San Michele

Situated nearby Pievalta the specialities here are both Verdicchio and Montepulciano. Showing their Bastion Contrario 2016 100% Montpeuciano was eagerly anticipated. This singular meaty style with a pronounced Cherry scent was a serious wine of distinction. High in acid with moderated tannins it offered the wine hunter a different wine experience.

Failoni

Again farmed nearby, this 4 ha winery established in 2018 offers a range of wines with several grape varieties grown (as others) on light clay-based soils. My choice of wine was the elegant Verdicchio sporting a full-on nose of a saline, lime and almonds with a great mouthfeel and textured finish.

The 8 wine wonders of Marche in Central Italy Stephen Barrett samples the wines of the Adriatic As a wine writer I am often offered the opportunity to visit and discover wine regions that might (in UK terms) been left behind as the giant multiples seem only to want samey wines on their shelves. This article below is how we do our work with incisive tastings and notes. We hope (like you) these original finds might awaken your taste buds to search for individual and often original wines to taste and savour! Our tour started by discovering exactly which (style of) wines were represented in Marche. Being in an Adriatic location I hoped for some exciting white wines that would match some of the noted seafood in this province. Most provinces in Italy are blessed with good fortune as their wine industry nurtures often ancient and spectacular varietals with almost

‘secret’ styles that tantalise and delight. So pencils and palates sharpened off we went…. Our new tasting was not to disappoint as we ventured to the magnificent historic premises of Malacari in Offagna. Here we met 8 wine makers and principles from the prestigious group known as Terroir Marche (Vignailio bio). These 8 winemakers representing 19 members of their group and each had (at least) two samples to show us.All were eager to meet us and were looking for UK representation…

Tomassetti

Situated near to the sea to the north of the region we were showed his Verdicchio 2016 that exuded fresh herbal notes that rolled effortlessly into a brilliant mouthfeel of stone fruit over lime! Elaborated in concrete it presented a quality that we were to experience throughout the tasting.

Broccanera

Again this winery is v near to the sea and is influenced by it. The winery is comparatively new being established in 2011. Their 3.5 ha are cultivating Verdicchio, Syrah and Merlot. The 2016 Cantaro (Verdicchio) is as fresh as a breeze! Using tank (fermentation) followed by 10 months in the bottle before entering the market. This 2016 sample is full on the palate with pronounced Lime scents abound.

Fattoria Nanni

Verdicchio 2017 offers citrus (Orange and Lime), exotic perfume and grassy notes in a simple swirl! A touch of saline makes an appearance as this wine of quality takes a shine.

Moroder

Situated near to Ancona to the top of a calcareous cliff-top location, Moroder are able to elaborate beautiful wines in a unique environment. With lots of work undertaken in the winery their wines are held in high esteem. We sniffed, swirled and sipped their 100% Montepulciano that offered complexity, hidden fruit and glorious spice throughout its silky (Riserva) style.

Malacari

A short distance west to Malicari’s ancient castle, home to their famous wines where the vineyards are 250 m above sea level. Fastidious selection of Montpeulciano berries after which they are pressed and interned for three years in large oak format. We tasted a 2014 and a magical 1998 showing just how quiet development can tame the high acid/ low tannins of this red grape in Marche. Wines are either Doc and Docg in origination, some Superiore and Classico all now sporting Organic, Biodynamic with sustainability throughout the range of the wines from this exclusive Terroir Marche group. It would be excellent to see these wines in the UK perhaps at an organic wine specialist? I know you’re out there!

Pievalta

Heading towards the Appenine Hills Peivalta vinifies his 100% 2016 Verdicchio in rather plump terracotta vessels of 300 litres capacity. The resulting wine shows a smoky note followed by a Lime and stone fruit finish. A gentle saline note appears too that becomes the hallmark of these terroir – influenced Verdicchios

Local chamber choir to perform in Bath Abbey’s restored east end Bath Abbey’s beautiful east end was recently reopened to the public after nearly a year. As part of the Footprint project, repairs were made to the collapsing floor and fragile ledgerstones, and a new eco-heating system using Bath’s famous hot springs was installed. If you have not yet been in to see the newly restored east end, there will be an opportunity to do so while enjoying a concert by the Aquae Sulis Chorale, a chamber choir made up of local professional and semiprofessional singers. They will perform a

selection of much-loved favourites including Zadok the Priest by Handel, Parry’s I was Glad and Tippet's Five Spirituals. Tickets for the concert on Friday 12 July, 6.30-7.30pm are still available from Bath Box Office. Very aptly all profits will go to the Abbey’s Footprint Project with all money raised, including ticket sales, automatically doubled thanks to the Brownsword Charitable Foundation, which is match-funding all donations to Footprint. From furlongs to leagues

T

HE HUMAN LEAGUE are back and looking forward to an action packed day out; performing at Bath Racecourse on Saturday 14th September. Enjoy a day at the races before dancing into the evening as one of the 80's biggest bands delights the crowds with hits such as the Number One single 'Don't You Want Me Baby', 'Open Your Heart', 'Fascination' and 'Human'. A gig not to be missed…..

The Human League are so credible it’s incredible. In fact, they’re probably more highly regarded now than they were in 1981 when they released their landmark album Dare! They’re used to everyone from Madonna to Moby, Pet Shop Boys to Robbie Williams, citing them as an influence.

64 inbath

But they’re about more than esoteric infiltration – there has been mainstream penetration, too, commensurate with a band who gave us the greatest ever Christmas Number 1 single with 1981/2’s ‘Don’t You Want Me’, who have had four Top 10 albums and eight Top 10 singles in the UK as well as two US Number 1 singles and sold 20 million records worldwide. Time-travel saga Ashes To Ashes, based one of its main characters on Joanne Catherall, while the mighty Philip Oakey appeared on Top Gear at the personal behest of Jeremy Clarkson who regularly name-checks the League in his newspaper column. Then there are the ‘L’ girls, the new generation of synth-driven female pop artists, who have got in on the League-adoring act: La Roux is a known admirer of the electro pioneers, while Little Boots is such a fan she requested Philip Oakeys input on her debut album.

Even Lady Gaga professed to be a devotee when she met them; they had adjacent dressing rooms at the ‘V’ Festival. “She sat there in her bra and pants and we told her we were a huge fan of hers and she told us she was a huge fan of ours as well,” says Susan Ann Sulley, who has never been a waitress in a cocktail bar but has been a member of the League since Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left the band in 1980 to form Heaven 17. “I’m not star-struck by many people and I don’t hero-worship anyone, but she was lovely.” But not surprisingly for a group who were famously described by David Bowie in 1979 as “the sound of the future”, and indeed the group was once called The Future, The Human League have never been about resting on their laurels or relying on past glories to see them through. The band have just completed the UK leg of their 'Red Live Tour' and 2019 shows now signs of slowing down, as the festivals season sees them continue to travel across the UK and parts of Europe culminating in their Bath Racecourse show on September 14th. Executive Director of Bath Racecourse, Jo Hall said, ‘Human League are one the most influential pop bands of the 80s and everyone – whatever their age – knows the bands number 1 hit ‘don’t you want me’. After the success of having UB40 and James Blunt perform here, we can’t wait to have Human League live after racing on Saturday 14 September. I‘m sure they are going to rock the racecourse!’

ValleyFest 2 - 4 August 2019, Chew Valley Lake

Treats, beats and plenty to eat! Valley Fest, the best-tasting music festival in the South West, has a punchy programme: Basement Jaxx (DJ set), Razorlight and Tom Odell are headlining. The music festival, which takes place between 2nd - 4th August 2019 alongside Chew Valley Lake, also showcases the region’s finest produce. From charcuterie to cheddars and ciders to sausages, it’s hedge-to-hedge Somerset style and sizzle. Now in its fifth year, Valley Fest’s line up has always included some big names as well as plenty of rising stars. And the consistently biggest crowd pleaser of all: the view. Chew Valley Lake provides the sparkling backdrop that is edged by the rolling Mendip hills.

Live acts and DJ sets

This year Nubiyan Twist, Stealing Sheep, Henge, Dutty Moonshine Big Band, The Magic Numbers and Honeyfeet are on the bill. Valley Fest has got a much bigger DJ line up this year. Norman Jay MBE, will be

serving up some good times. There will also be a DJ set from Leftfield plus The Nextmen and Arcadia are bringing the bug.

Lazy lakeside lushness

And the consistently biggest crowd pleaser of all: the view. Part of Valley Fest’s appeal is the lazy lakeside vibe. And artists which perfectly cater to that include Ishmael Ensemble and Three Cane Whale, whose debut album was chosen by Cerys Matthews as one of her Top Five Modern Folk Albums.

Food glorious food

The region’s culinary heroes and heroines will be cooking up a storm day and night in the form of feasts. Owner of the Michelinstarred Pony and Trap, Josh Eggleton, together with Rob Howell, Head Chef of Root, which recently won a Bib Gourmand award, are at the helm on Saturday. They are serving a six-course feast during the afternoon and evening. On Sunday, the Free Range Chef will be serving up 3 courses of vegetarian sharing platters – expect a fusion of flavours from the Middle East and Italy. Not forgetting the gorgeous brunches, which will be offered by the Riverford Field Kitchen on Saturday and the Yeo Valley Canteen on Sunday.

Love local

Basement Jaxx

Valley Fest is about celebrating food in the South West and the passion of those who produce it. Most of the fresh ingredients will be coming from the festival’s neighbours at The Community Farm. Regionally-sourced tapas will be served all day in the iconic tipis by The Monmouth Table, (pictured) run by Annie Coplestone and Carlotta Paolieri. Annie has worked for Moro, River Cottage and River Café. There will be cooking demonstrations from Masterchef quarter finalist: Hope Pointing and Elly Pear will be cooking recipes from her brand new book: Green. Huge BBQs are scheduled too - think tractor-sized rotisseries!

Wellbeing

Weleda will be offering Skin Food facials. Yoga, massage, meditation, mindfulness, reiki and singing workshops are available to help rejuvenate and refresh. Plus talks on body confidence.

From charcuterie to cheddars and ciders to sausages, it’s hedge-to-hedge Somerset style and sizzle. Charity fundraising

Much of the drive to run the festival comes from the fund raising opportunity it creates. Last year, Valley Fest raised £14,479.15 for Teenage Cancer Trust. Luke's mother Sandra Hasell very sadly died of ovarian cancer. She had so much energy and a huge love of life - just like Luke. That is why Valley Fest wants to support teenagers through a cancer diagnosis, so that they have the best chance of thriving and also loving life.

Value Fest!

And the best bit?! Adult weekend tickets are only £125 (plus booking fee) and can be bought from www.valleyfest.co.uk. They are selling out in record time, so join the party while you can! The event is perfect for food lovers, first-time festival goers, plus young and maturing families. No long treks across site and plenty of activities for everyone. Expect hedgeto-hedge Somerset sparkle and plenty of nonsense with a spectacular soundtrack. This is West Country wildness at its best. Everyone is advised to arrive hungry.

Bath Postal Museum delivers a first class history of communication Did you know that the postal system as we know it today has its origins in 18th century Bath. Firstly a national delivery service using horse riders (known as Post Boys) was organised by Ralph Allen (pictured) which he ran from his office in Bath. He was also a major participator in the building of Georgian Bath. Later John Palmer introduced a network of mail coaches connecting every city and town in Great Britain which later became the Royal Mail. Did you know that before the introduction of postage stamps the cost of sending post was borne by the receiver and the cost varied dependent on the distance travelled and the number of sheets sent .

Check the website for opening times and for more information.

At the Bath Postal Museum you can find out much more about the history of the postal system and view part of our extensive philatelic collection. Current exhibits include a fascinating collection of letters lost on land due to wrecks and crashes and later recovered - compiled by the late former Mayor of Bath - Adrian Hopkins.

Summer exhibitions and events at the Victoria Art Gallery War and Rumours of War

6 July – 15 September 2019 Our summer exhibition has been drawn largely from The Hepworth Wakefield’s outstanding collection of 1940s British works on paper. The material allows us to revisit a decade of anxiety, austerity and idealism that resonates strongly with the present day. Many of the works in this exhibition were commissioned for the nation through the War Artists Advisory Committee. It sought to provide opportunities for artists to create ‘not simply a record of the facts, but of what the war felt like’ for the benefit of future generations. These pictures, many by women artists, reveal the impact of war on the home front.

Image: Northampton Street, Bath by Leslie Atkinson, 1942

The part that the city of Bath played in this story centres around the Baedeker Raids of April 1942. The resulting devastation was documented by artists including Norma Bull, Leslie Atkinson and Clifford and Rosemary Ellis. These exhibits enable visitors to appreciate the impact of the war on local people. Also works by Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Barbara Hepworth and John Piper.

at The Holburne Museum Édouard Vuillard: The Poetry of the Everyday

Until 15 September 2019 Vuillard (1868-1940) was one of the leading figures in French art at the end of the 19th century. Famed for his small, subtle studies mostly of figures in interiors, his art is renowned for its modest scale, intimate subject matter and intense colouring. We celebrate the unique qualities of his early works in which he balanced an obsession with patterned fabrics and wallpaper with subtle, domestic psycho-dramas to create paintings with striking emotional intensity.

Lauren Child: The Art of Illustration

Until 8 September 18 and under FREE Step inside the joyfully eclectic world of Lauren Child MBE, award-winning author, illustrator and Waterstones Children’s Laureate (2017-2019). Best loved for her fictional series, Clarice Bean and Charlie and Lola, Child’s vibrant collage illustrations and witty narratives have charmed and amused children and adults alike for nearly twenty years. This exhibition celebrates the art of Child’s illustrations and her love of pattern, colour and textiles. It features works from her original stories as well as her recent re-imaginings of fairy tales and classic bedtime stories such as Mary Poppins, Pippi Longstocking and The Princess and the Pea. Plus: Enjoy a special family trail

Graham Fagen: The Slave’s Lament

Until 8 September 2019 Written in 1792, The Slave’s Lament is Robert Burns’ only work that communicates the appalling realities of the transatlantic slave trade. Despite being more than 200 years old, the song brings the social, political and human tragedies of today into sharp focus. Graham Fagen’s contemporary interpretation connects Scottish and Caribbean history through seemingly disparate musical cultures.

Collecting Craft Lauren Child's Lola

Until 1 Sep 2019 This display highlights a lifetime of collecting contemporary crafts including the best of British silver, textiles, ceramics, furniture and glass. Including many well-known makers such as Edmund de Waal and Lucie Rie.

Aspiring poets invited to help put Roman Baths on the map The Roman Baths will inspire new poetry as people use the historic site as part of a major new project to stimulate creativity. Prize-winning poet Neil Rollinson will help celebrate the launch of Places of Poetry by using the artefacts and statues in the baths to inspire amateur poets to pen their own verse. As part of Places of Poetry a digital map of England and Wales has been created to encourage people to think about the environment and history around them. People can pin their own poem on the map, which consists of two layers: an artistic map, based on decorative 17th-century county maps, and a second layer of Ordnance Survey data, allowing users to zoom in to a high level of detail. People can write a poem about a place that matters to them, and poets will be based at locations around the country this summer to help them. Neil Rollinson will host a special evening event, Rhyming Roman Baths, on Friday 12 July (6-8pm). Visitors will be able to roam around the Roman Baths discovering ancient and modern words of wisdom, before writing and then pinning their poem on the map.

Places of Poetry is led by the poet and Radio 4 regular Paul Farley of Lancaster University and the academic Professor Andrew McRae at the University of Exeter. The historic Places of Poetry map is based on a design by William Hole, which was published with Michael Drayton’s PolyOlbion (1612 and 1622), an expansive poetic journey through the landscape, history, traditions and customs of England and Wales. The project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England, and is made possible by partnerships with the Ordnance Survey, The Poetry Society and National Poetry Day. The Bishop's Palace

Summer Family Fun at The Bishop’s Palace

This summer, The Bishop’s Palace in Wells will be holding a huge range of family activities guaranteed to keep little ones entertained throughout the long holidays.

The fun begins on 24th July, when the first of the summer trails will be in place – each week of the holidays a different trail will encourage children to explore the Gardens, focusing on the theme of the week. Every Tuesday from 30th July onwards, children can join in with the “Crafty Cats” family activity sessions between 10:30am3pm in the Undercroft of the Palace. The sessions will follow the weekly themes and include “Take to the Air” where, amongst other activities, they will have the chance to make a mini hot air balloon, “Woodland Wonders”, “The Tudors” and finally an “EcoScrap Heap Challenge”. On Thursdays (1st, 8th and 15th August) from 11am-3pm there’s a chance to enjoy the popular “Nature Ninjas” family garden fun sessions with a range of garden and naturebased activities. One of the highlights of the summer at the Palace is the “Midsummer Mayhem” Family Fun Day, which takes place this year on Sunday 4th August from 10am-4pm. This year, there will be an Alice in Wonderland theme, with a wonderland-themed bouncy castle, plenty of inflatable fun, crazy croquet (featuring flamingo-handled mallets), face painting and plenty of games and crafts. In the evening of 4th August families will be entranced by Boxtree Productions’ theatre production of “The Legend of King Arthur”. Held on the beautiful South Lawn with a backdrop of the medieval ruins of the Great Hall, it’s a match made in heaven of medieval folklore set on the ancient isle of Avalon. The production is suitable for all the family and includes original songs and magical storytelling to keep all ages entranced.

To bring the summer holiday to a dramatic finish, why not join medieval re-enactors and combat specialists Bowlore Medieval for a Bank Holiday Weekend like no other? Their encampment will be in residence at the Palace from 24th-26th August and their thrilling activities include longbow and crossbow shooting, weapons demonstrations, combat displays, sword lessons and have-a-go archery. Whatever your age, you’ll be entranced by their skills and can take the chance to learn something new!

Bowlore Medieval Also on the Bank Holiday Monday, the annual Moat Boat Race takes place on the Palace Moat, so it’s a great chance to spend a wonderful day enjoying all the Palace has to offer. All activities included in standard admission apart from the Outdoor Theatre Production (Adult £14 Child £9, Family £40)

Holiday Fun at YMCA Bath We set our holiday clubs up over 20 years ago to help support working parents / carers in Bath during the school holidays when childcare can be difficult to find and expensive. Our club is open to children aged 5 – 11 yrs and is based at St John’s Catholic Primary School in Oldfield Park. Our Ofsted registered clubs are run by qualified and experienced play workers who are all DBS checked.

We sometimes bring other professionals in to do things such as circus skills, magicians or a children’s yoga of fitness / wellbeing teacher.

Our EVS international volunteers also give some of their time to the clubs which adds a fantastic learning dynamic for the children. Children are expected to bring a packed lunch and we will provide a continental breakfast for early arrivals and a light snack in the morning and afternoon.

Trips out are on a Friday and will include visits to local attractions such as Longleat, Bowood and Avon Valley during the longer holidays and the cinema in shorter holidays.

Activities are varied from sport, dance, crafts, cookery to trips out. We often incorporate themes for a week and run activities and events around those themes which are always a lot of fun.

We work hard to make the holiday club as magical a place for your child to be as possible – whilst you can be happy in the knowledge that they are in good hands. We never forget that your child is on holiday and we want to make that as fun as possible!

There is an additional charge of approx. £15 for trips out but includes entrance fees, transport and any additional staffing costs. Open: 8am – 5.30pm Cost: £24 per day (£12 half day – 8:00am -1:00pm / 1:00pm – 5:30pm) www.ymcabathgroup.org.uk

property Carey Gilliland of Madison Oakley

One in ten people now own a second property Recent research from think tank, Resolution Foundation, has found that the number of British people who own a second home, buy-to-let or overseas property has doubled since 2001. While the number of young adults who own a home continues to fall, one in 10 people now own an additional property. If you were born in the 1980's, you may be one of just 37% of people who managed to buy a home by the age of 29. Compare that with 50% of those born in the 1960s.

Perfect planning can help reduce transaction time in buoyant Bath market. I was interested to read the results of a new survey that came out last week into property transactions and buyer behaviour. Admittedly the survey size was small at 2000 participants but some of the numbers were fascinating. Apparently, the average transaction time came out at 6.8 months. I can tell you that, from our own data collection, I know the average duration from "on market" to completion in Bath ranges from 15 to about 20 weeks dependent on the agent you use but I think that is the closest we can come to putting an accurate local figure on how long the process takes. However, it seems a bit daft to me to try and put a total time on a process that will be completely different for every buyer. Do you need to sell before you can look? Are you looking for a one in a million property or a standard two up two down? Have you saved your deposit/appointed a solicitor/obtained your mortgage in principle or are you doing everything on the fly? Other results from the survey included the average time searching online for property

86 inbath

(19.46 hours), time spent picking a solicitor (2.98 days) and how long buyers take between viewing and making an offer (4.47 days). In addition, it apparently takes an average of 3.74 days to get a viewing but this one I can definitely believe. From an agents point of view, the exercise of meshing buyers availability with owners or tenants movements and our own diaries can be even more difficult than getting my cat to take a worming tablet. In other stat based news, BA2 is currently the third best selling postcode in the South West based on volume of completions recorded in the latest HM Land Registry figures (behind Downend and Gloucester GL2), with 536 sales in the last 6 mths. BA1 is also a bronze medal winner in the latest stats, for highest price rises year on year at 9.6% behind BA3 and BH1.

Younger people who are rich can afford a second home - a sign that property wealth is not distributed fairly across the country. Buy-to-let is now the most common form of property wealth, having grown by 58% since 2006-08, the report found. Interestingly, millennials match the levels of second home ownership than those in other generations, suggesting that only younger people who are rich can afford a second home - a sign, according to the foundation, that property wealth is not distributed fairly across the country. While young people in particular are less likely to own their own home than previous generations, those that do own are more likely to have more than one property. In some instances, these second properties are inherited and therefore passed down through the family, rather than purchased. Of those that have the funds for a second property, most private landlords invested in residential property to provide for their future and their family's in the form of supplementing a pension or establishing a business.

It’s no secret that the UK population is ageing. Currently there are 11.8 million people in the UK over the age of 65, which is forecast to rise by 20% over the next decade. In addition, the number of people aged 90 or over is set to almost double in the next 10 years. This means that the time spent in ‘retirement’ will also lengthen, underpinning the crucial need for age-appropriate homes. The gap between the potential pool of demand and current supply is stark. Present stock (from age-restricted over-55s housing to housing with care) comprises 725,000 homes, which equates to just c.2.6% of the total housing stock in the UK. According to Knight Frank’s recent forecasts, the total value of the private senior living market will climb 40% to £55.2bn by 2023, from £39.6bn in 2019 - with growth being underpinned by these demographic shifts and increased investment from both the UK and overseas.

The number of people aged 90 or over is set to almost double in the next 10 years.

Franki Watson of Knight Frank

Private senior living market forecast to grow by almost 40% by 2023 Franki Watson of Knight Frank

This month we also published our first Senior Living Survey, which asked 2000 over-65s about their priorities when it comes to property. The findings reveal that location is by far the most important factor for over 65s when choosing a property, with 56% of respondents highlighting this as a priority. This is followed by affordability and size of the property. Respondents also indicated a clear inclination towards town centre living, with 75% stating the distance from a senior living village to a town centre was important to them. These findings highlight clear opportunities for senior living developers to design schemes that appeal to this growing sector. In fact, 37% of respondents to the survey said they found the prospect of living in a senior living scheme attractive, representing huge potential for market growth. For those looking to downsize, Knight Frank are currently marketing the luxurious Charlecote Apartments which offer, two, bedroom apartments in the sought-after area of Lansdown. Prices from £510,000. All have parking but garaging is available to purchase. For something more suited for the city centre living, we have only one fabulous two bedroom apartment remaining at our One Tram Yard on Walcot Street, with allocated parking. It is a must see at £950,000. For further information about local schemes available to move into, please contact Knight Frank 01225 325 999

In the past the traditional process for a letting agent has been to make a charge for processing a tenants application to rent. An “Assured Shorthold Tenancy” (AST) would be put in place by the agent with a minimum term of six months, after this initial six month period, the tenancy is still in place on a monthly basis until such time as either the landlord or the tenant puts in their notice.

Tenants Fees Explained

With the price of property nearly at an all time high, a lot of people are looking at the rental situation instead of committing to purchasing, this gives them some more flexibility over where they can live as they can rent a property in an area that they probably couldn’t afford to buy. With the recently introduced tenant fee ban and the limitations that this is bringing to the residential lettings industry, time and conditions have never been better for a tenant.

This is the most common way, however in the past some of the corporate companies used to issue two months notice to all their tenants on the fourth month so that the tenancy ends in line with the end of the six month period, even if the tenant had no intentions of leaving. When the tenant then said that they did not want to leave and where happy to continue the tenancy, the agent would charge them another administration fee to process a new AST. If the tenant decided that they did not want to incur the additional cost and therefore leave the property, the agent would remarket the property, claim a new fee from both the landlord and the new tenant that would take the property, a win win situation for the agent. A lot of the big national lettings firms went around acquiring many of the smaller companies in recent years in order to swell the number of properties that they would have on their books and give them more opportunity to multiply their income from these recurring tenant fees. This is the situation that the government is trying to stop, unnecessary repeat fees being charges to the people that are least able to afford them, the tenants.

Government’s Help to Buy Scheme might get a first-time buyer their first foot onto the property ladder, but that scheme is limited as it’s really geared towards new build property. What else might help? Shared ownership schemes might also be a solution, where a buyer buys a share of a property and rents the rest from the likes of a housing association. In my opinion, shared ownership is going to become much more wide spread as the way people get their first home simply as it reduces the need for getting together a huge deposit and the resulting smaller mortgages associated with shared ownership are more affordable to people on medium incomes.

The average first time buyer deposit is now of a scale that requires almost 50 per cent of first time buyers to rely on the ‘bank of mum and dad’ to get their deposit together.

The Hub at Mulberry Park wins prestigious award The Hub, Curo’s £10m community building at its Mulberry Park development in Bath, was crowned the winner of the South West Community Benefit category at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards 2019. The award recognises outstanding achievement in providing a facility which directly benefits the local community and can demonstrate its success through local community feedback. RICS judges commended the project team – BDP Architects, housing association and house-builder Curo, Rydon Construction and surveyors Ridge & Partners – “for creating an exemplary community hub that is a trailblazer for future community buildings.” Curo Chief Executive, Victor da Cunha, says: “We’re thrilled and very proud to win this award for The Hub, alongside our partners. It’s a fantastic recognition of the important role it already plays in bringing communities together, less than half a year since it officially opened its doors last December. Its success is firmly based on close collaboration with local residents who have helped us to create these iconic buildings – a place shaped by the community, for the community. “So many people – not only from the local area, but from all across Bath – enjoy the family-friendly café at The Hub every day. This community building, with its versatile rooms and state-of-the-art facilities, is

already a place of choice for business, meetings and events for many local partners, charities, health providers, politicians and local people and businesses offering a wide range of courses and classes. “We’re looking for even more partners to bring much-needed services and activities to The Hub for the local communities of Combe Down, Foxhill and Mulberry Park. As a Community Benefits Society, The Hub is run in partnership with local residents and once in full operation, our vision is to transfer this fantastic building to the community to be run by and for the local people.” Winners from all regions of the country will meet in London in October to find out who’ll take home the National RICS Awards trophies.

Olivia Waters added: “Since we started work on the site, Bath Riverside has installed around 135 sq metres of external living wall over the principal buildings creating visual interest as well as increasing biodiversity and attracting pollinators.

new homes

“More than 5,000 plants were used, as well as the addition of insect and bird boxes. The colour, scent and ecological aspects of the living wall combine to enrich the surroundings for the residents and clients of Bath Riverside, with the plants and nature helping to promote a general feeling of well-being.” Marcus Evans, Sales and Marketing Director at Crest Riverside said: “We were determined to deliver a sustainable improvement to the environment at Bath Riverside. “Columns of greenery mirror the organic surroundings of the building, contemporary features which help the new building blend within its riverside location. The walls help link the residential area with parks and riverside paths and also help to soften the lines of the buildings.” Homebuyers and investors have transformed Crest Nicolson Regeneration’s development blueprint into a highly contemporary and sustainable community – without compromising on creature comforts. “We recognise our impact on the environment and put effective initiatives in place to address this. By creating a vibrant community has always been a cornerstone of the project - bringing a derelict and disused area back into the public realm.” Over 5,000 plants have been used including a living wall

Built in greenery positive factor for Bath buyers Developers behind Bath Riverside have backed BaNES’ latest bid to promote flowers, plants and trees in order to encourage pollinators. The council will now allow verges between Twerton and Widcombe to grow out to attract more bees to pollinate plants and trees and help fight the effects of climate change.

Royal View also incorporates an atrium with stunning plants hanging from the eighth floor all the way down to the ground. Both buildings also feature penthouses with roof gardens.

Olivia Waters, Group Sustainability & Governance Manager for Crest Nicholson Plc said: “The flagship apartment buildings at Bath Riverside are also playing their part in helping to deliver a greener environment for residents, neighbours and commuters by encouraging them to connect with nature. “As developers, we have always been conscious of the need to support and improve the local environments where we build new homes. Creating green spaces that support biodiversity and provide inviting spaces for local residents to enjoy is a winwin for us.” There is a living wall in the atrium of the flagship Sovereign Point building and around the ground floor of the companion Royal View building.

NAO report shows that almost twothirds of homebuyers that used Help to Buy scheme didn't need to. A recent study from the National Audit Office (NAO) has found that almost two-thirds of homebuyers who used the government's Help to Buy scheme could have bought a home without it - but could not have purchased their new property without some help.

a 25% bonus on top of their savings when they withdraw the money to buy their first property. The maximum purchase price is £250,000 (£ 400,000 in London). The maximum government bonus that someone can receive is £3,000, if they have saved £12,000.

Help to Buy comes in two forms (loans and an Individual Savings Accounts (Isas)).

It is too early to tell if the scheme has delivered value for money for taxpayers, but Help To Buy has increased home ownership and housing supply, particularly for first-time buyers.

As for loans, the government lends up to 20% of the cost of a newly built property (outside Greater London), so buyers need only a 5% deposit and a 75% mortgage to buy it. Those purchasing a new-build home are not charged interest for the first five years. The ISA was launched in December 2015, and is open to first-time buyers in the UK. In this instance, the government gives savers

The NAO also mention that the scheme did help boost the profits of building firms with home builders selling more homes using the initiative and therefore boosting profits. The study also found that one in 25 of participants had household incomes of over £100,000.

Britain in Bloom judges to begin city tour at Bath Riverside Judging of Bath’s entry in this year’s Britain in Bloom awards will begin with a tour of the landscaping at Crest Nicholson Regeneration’s Bath Riverside development. The Bath in Bloom committee is responsible for organising the tour of the city for RHS judges who will be evaluating the city’s entry in the South West section of the competition on Wednesday July 17. Stephen Brook from the Bath in Bloom committee said the city had been very successful in the competition last year, winning a Gold and finishing overall winners in their category. “This year we are aiming for the same again. Should we do well we are hoping that we will be invited to compete in the National UK Finals next year. “In planning the route we have looked at various areas of Bath in detail and we were very impressed with what has gone on and the landscaping at the Crest Nicholson Regeneration development at Bath Riverside.” The judges will start their tour at Bath Riverside at approximately 10.30am. Judges will spend around 15-20 minutes looking around the landscaping as well as looking at the sculptures and private gated gardens. They will also look at the general landscaping, the living walls outside some of the apartments and the towers of plants inside one of the atriums of one of the apartment buildings. Judges will also meet representatives from Crest Nicholson Regeneration to explain their plans both now and in the future and at environmental issues including the development’s central heating and hot water system. Bath rugby star converted by Redcliffe's Park Place development When looking for a new family home, professional rugby player Matt Garvey wasn't convinced about new builds - until he saw Redcliffe Homes' Park Place development in Corsham. When looking for a new family home, professional rugby player Matt Garvey wasn't convinced about new builds - until he saw Redcliffe Homes' Park Place development in Corsham. Matt, who plays for Bath, already lived in Corsham with his wife and two young children but they were looking for the next step up the property ladder and ideally their forever home. "We drove around the area, went past Park Place and really liked the look of it, so we went in and had a look around and fell in love with The Ashbury home."

The Garveys moved in just a couple of months ago. Reflecting on what made them want to buy their home, Matt says: "We just loved everything about the house: the aesthetics, the space, the light, the rooms. It looked incredible and once we'd seen it we just didn't want to lose it so we put a deposit down straight away. The light in particular is amazing - we love the size of the windows and the open, airy, spacious feel of the house. We're settling in and adding our personal touches to the place now but there's no rush as the fixtures and fittings are such high quality.

"There is also a great little community on the development itself, as well as in the wider village. This is really important to us as we're living away from our families." The Ashbury, a beautiful five-bedroom house, is just one of a range of homes on the development. Redcliffe have built an outstanding selection of homes to do justice to their beautiful setting, combining traditional style with contemporary elegance and energy efficiency. The homes are also spacious, with an inbuilt flexibility so they meet buyers' particular needs and requirements, whatever they may be.

"There is also a great little community on the development itself, as well as in the wider village. This is really important to us as we're living away from our families." Matt says that the process of buying their new house has been very positive: "It felt like we were not buying a house from a big company that forgets about its customers, we were buying from a local company >>>>

that really values its customers and is determined to get it right for them. I can't speak highly enough of the whole experience - it was totally stress-free." There are a number of homes remaining on the Park Place development of 2,3,4 and 5 bedroom homes. They are in a charming rural setting a stone's throw from the beautiful historic market town of Corsham. Corsham is a hidden gem, full of character. The market town is rich in history and historical buildings, including Corsham Court, an English country house in a park designed by Capability Brown, notable for its spectacular gardens and fine art collection.

The market town is rich in history and historical buildings, including Corsham Court, an English country house in a park designed by Capability Brown, notable for its spectacular gardens and fine art collection. The town itself is busy, bustling and a pleasure to stroll around - not only for people but also for the peacocks who sometimes appear on the High Street!

With an arts centre, wonderful independent shops and great places to eat and drink, it's a town that is easy to fall in love with. Looking more practically, the primary and secondary schools are excellent and very highly regarded, while the M4 is just five miles away, as is Chippenham railway station which has a direct connection to London and Reading.
