In North Gujarat, the food is non spicy and less oily, this region is famous for thalis which consists of rice, dal, curry, vegetables, sprouted beans, farsan, pickles and chutney. There is Kathiwada, where pulses dominate most preparations and sweetmeats are made of gur (jaggery). Kutch cuisine uses more milk products and kadi. Khaman Dhokla and Doodhpak are the specialty. And then in South Gujarat; plenty of rainfall ensures good vegetables especially in Surat. Undhyoo and Paunk are the famous delicacies of this region. The chefs have taken great pride in designing their thali from the above mentioned regions, which changes for every meal session. Sit in air conditioned comfort, and let the service start. Besides the Daal-Bhaat (rice) - Rotli-Shaak the basic foursome is supplemented with Shaak (vegetables), sweet dishes and farsan. The waiters approach in the traditional manner in quick succession and the following meal begins. A welcome drink to start with …an aam raas or a fruit punch, based on seasonal availability. Then are the savories (farsan) two in number - a choice from dhokla, khandvi, mattar… Then the shaak (vegetables) - 5 varieties of pure Jain preparations every session is a different variety or their speciality Lauke ke kofta. Three varieties of staples…could be a Phulka, Poori, Thepla, Rotla Undhiyoo loo Sukha, paneer, Bajre ki Roti or Bhakri and two varieties of rice - the chefs give you from a choice from jeera, peas, vegetable, Gatte ke Pulao and plain rice. Add the pickle, papad and chutney to that and your Thali is full and believe you me there is unlimited helping too. The restaurant does tend to get crowded and noisy, it is a popular place after all. But don't let that faze you…focus on the food. Believe me it is pure indulgence.” Now it's time to say goodbye to Say good bye to long queues as the new space accommodates an increased seating capacity. Lamgau Caves an Impressive pavilion

Among the many fascinating tourist places in Goa, Lamgau Caves is another place you can think of visiting. Nestled away in Bicholim, it is situated around 35 km from north-east of Panaji. The caverns are engraved out of decomposed laterite and hence quite delicate and not advisable to venture into it but it make for quite a vision and an important educational and cultural centre. In here lies a cave that displays an impressive pavilion appearing structure as well as beams and ceiling in the shrine. In the courtyard you will ďŹ nd a stone linga with a tulsi vrindavan as well as a nandi bull image. There is another cave that is mostly used as a shelter during the time of rain. The passage to this cave is a complicated one.

This waterfall ows down along the rocks looking more like a waterslide than a waterfall. The waterfall ows right by the roadside and is easily accessible. Since the water slides down the rocks, there is no well at the bottom and bathing is fun due to the force of the water. Other than this, there are streams rushing down the slopes, churning out milky foam amidst the breathtaking scenery. Budbud Lake The Lake with bubles

01 07 Netravali is the remote village situated in the south of Goa in Sanguem taluka, this village was best known for the dense forest and tribal villagers, but slowly in developed into the remote tourist spot with few neglected places around such as the Netravali waterfall which is accessible only through the 1.5 hrs of hectic tracking fleeting the thick vegetation. The tracking is the hard task hence the old people and small children are not recommended to accompany in this journey. Once you reach the waterfall you will not regret the efforts you took. It's very small waterfall with the tiny pond at the bottom where you can swim and bath. The bubble lake is situated just before the journey to the waterfall. Though it is still mysterious as how the bubble comes out from the water but the villagers consider this place as holy and you were not allowed to have bath in this water.

Sarzora Lake The Switzerland of Goa

The Sarzora Lake is one of the most secluded and romantic places in Goa. You might be mistaken yourself being into the Europe when you look at the view surrounded to this bit of a neglected place in Goa. Situated approximately 8 KM away from the nearest city of Margao and around 2KM from famous village Chinchinim, in south Goa this village has a very rich tradition and culture going back ages, most of which are still being followed today. The vast lush green fields and the serene landscape make this an ideal peace lover's paradise. It is deficult to belive but true that nobody in the Sarzora lives in a building or in a flat system as every family in this village has its own house be it big or small, which is unique thing in itself looking at the Goa's rapid urbanization you will find the real essence of the village here. The famous Sarzora Lake which depicts the Europe in itself add to the beauty of this village. The mighty hills which overlook the village give a visually stunning effect. Though it is not promoted much by the department it has its own charm of being neglected.

To reach there one has to board upon a trek of around 2 hours through woody areas to finally get here. Another option is to take a ferry ride from Palolem Beach to reach this place. Needless to say, the beach is not crowded. The hills and thick vegetation fringing the sands further add to the charm. It is among the most private places to visit in Goa.

St. Jacinto island Preserved Goan Charm

GOLDEN GOA

The Pre - Portuguese sites of Goa Goa still is portrayed & always lives with its historic Portuguese past. But one should also know & learn about the glorious Pre Portuguese history of Goa. Away from the hustles & bustles of the Goan trafďŹ c & city life lies the Pre Portuguese historic Goan sites which are not known to the goan public. History Lovers Group is attempting to take you'll towards the location & the history of these glorious Pre Portuguese sites. Our group member Balaji Shenoy who is a lecturer at Goa University took us to witness these beautiful historic sites & also shared quality learning information about these historic sites. 24

SEPTEMBER 2015

These Pre Portuguese historic civilizations developed mainly around the rivers because these rivers provide a steady supply of drinking water & also were used to make the land fertile for growing crops. Rivers were also a major transportation source moreover for transporting goods and people easily from one place to another. Steady flowing rivers were also a drinking source for animals which would be a strategy for hunting of animals. Goa or the Gomantak has long history and heritage. This article deals with the Pre-Portuguese heritage sites on the banks of River Khandepar. River Khandepar is one of the major tributaries of River Mahadei. River Khandepar originates in Karnataka, moves through the castle rock heights and then with the steep ungraded course in the Sahyadris becomes the beautiful Dudhsagar Falls.

If we look at the map of Khandepar River and if one walks along the river bank, he will find all these places on his way. By road one has to take different roads to reach there, but they all are in one line from North, First one may find Ishwar Bhat Caves than Khandepar Caves, Saptakoteshwar Temple and Kodar Caves. The excavation of the Rock Cut Caves and the construction of the structural temples during the ancient period seem to have been simultaneous development in Goa. There are three rock cut caves on the banks of River Khandepar. Ishwar Bhat Cave, Khandepar Cave, Kodar Cave and Saptakoteshwar Temple. Below mentioned are the brief descriptions about these sites.

identify the beautifully carved Nandi. This cave is in a private property next to the Padmanabh Maharaj Math. The magnificent Khandepar River flows opposite to the cave. Recently metallic sheets are put as shade to the cave and gate has been put to the entrance of the cave for the safety of the Linga. Khandepar Cave: One can witness four caves at Khandepar excavated out of a laterite hillock. These beautiful rock-cut cave groups consists of three twin caves facing (east) the River Khandepar, one Independent single Cave is facing the west opposite to the three twin caves. From the location of the independent cell facing the west it is evident that it was a worshiping shrine. Inside the cave we can witness a beautiful Linga too.

Ishwar Bhat Cave: This is a monolithic cave which is surviving rock solid after many harsh weather conditions of Goa. Inside the cave we can see a Linga & outside one can

Bhojas to Vijaynagara and I was interested in visiting all the caves which he mentioned in his book. So I started my journey from Khandepar I reached Kodar to see that cave. The cave is on the roadside, but I could not enter the cave as it was covered with bushes.” Said by Balaji Shenoy. Saptakoteshwar Temple: On the way to Kodar lies the Saptakoteshwar Temple, this belongs to Kadamba dynasty. Saptakoteshwar was the family deity of the Kadamba dynasty. Khandepar River flows in front of the temple. It very much resembles the Banaras Ghat. There are few steps built so that one can have bath in the river and can enter the temple. The temple can be divided into two parts, one Garbagriha and other Sabhamandap. There is a Linga in the Garbagriha. TREND SETTERS

Tejpal Singh, Managing Goa's first online grocery store with doorstep Service Starting online store and selling is not the new trend in India anymore, with the Giants like Flipkart who perhaps started this concept first in India grew up as market leaders in very short span of time, starting from scratch and turning it into big fortune is the Mantra of the virtual world. As it always happens, following the footsteps of the pioneers more people entered into this market and now the market become saturated. Most of these online stores are dealing mainly in consumer durables while there are not much players who ventured into the perishable consumer items online but this story of our trend setter from Goa is somewhat different from the rest. He started this concept of grocery online store in Goa just keeping in mind the requirement of the people in this tiny state of India. Here is the story of our first trend setter of Incredible Goa…..

28

SEPTEMBER 2015

This is the success story of the man behind the Goa's pioneer online grocery store with doorstep service. The Urban Ration is the brainchild of the Mumbai based entrepreneur Tejpal Singh who launched this unique concept in Goa almost 2 years back in October 2013. According to Mr. Tejpal this is the first online grocery store in Goa which sales from food grains to fresh vegetables and fruits online and gets the same delivered at your doorstep. Presently this online store has more than 2500 online registrations and 80% of them are repeated customers. But the question here is, why at the first place Tejpal Singh thought of coming up with this idea that too in the small state like Goa where the population is very low and distances are far off and Mr. Tejpal has very interesting explanation for that, according to him, he hails from one of the major Metros

like Mumbai and when he shifted to Goa he found that there is no provision of calling and getting the grocery stuff delivered at doorstep unlike the Mumbai “In Mumbai we can just make a call to the grocery store bellow our building and their delivery boy would appear within 10-15 mins with all ordered grocery items, we were surprised that we cannot do the same over here in Goa” Said Tejpal. “And then the idea of online grocery store stuck into my mind, I did some studies before venturing into this new project and I found out that in Bangalore this business model does exists and then we thought that in place like Goa, where cosmopolitan crowd exists, people are highly educated here and they want good service and at the same time saving their time from going in the market and doing shopping and that made me decide to start this concept in

Goa and the Urban Ration was launched in October 2013.” He added. Today the Urban Ration online store has more than 5500 products in 20 categories which include the Home Care, Personal Care, Grocery, Fresh Fruits & Vegetables & Meat, the Fish is the only item according to Tejpal is left out “But if the customer wants the fish, we have call centre where people can call and place the order and we will arrange the same through our local sources and get them delivered to the customer.” Tejpal Added. According to Tejpal When Urban Ration began its operations in Goa it was catering only the Panaji and surrounding areas like Porvorim and Mapusa but with the due course of time they have spread their distribution network in south Goa like Vasco and Margao and nearby suburbs. “The deliveries in North are done in two shifts, the morning deliveries start at 10am and ends at 1pm while evening deliveries runs through 4pm to 8pm. While the south Goa deliveries have done only in one shift which starts at 3pm and ends by 7pm. “This is done due to the logistic distance” said Tejpal. We also tried to find out as how much investment did Tejpal needed to kick start this venture and Tejpal said almost 50 Lakh, now this seems to be very huge investment for any online business but Tejpal has very logical explanation to this, according to him, There are two models of online business that exists out of which first is “The Market Place Model” in this business model, Portal owner ask the retailers to showcase their products online to become sellers on the website, this way the portal owners becomes just a mediator and there is no need to maintain any inventories, “It's called drop shop shipping which is done by manufactures directly to the consumers, where the payment is collected by the portal owners and later passed on to the manufacturers keeping their profits.” Tejpal explained. “Now the second model is Inventory Model which is our model” Said Tejpal. According to him selling of perishable goods online is completely different in which maintaining of inventory is necessary because unlike consumer durables, people do not plan to purchase their perishable goods requirements 5 to 10 days in advance “If I want to buy the groceries I go to my kitchen and find out what is missing and here I cannot wait to

place the order and good getting delivered after a week” said Tejpal. People don't plan and manufacturers cannot be told to deliver the goods directly to the consumer which is not possible. “So you are forced to maintain the inventory” Tejpal divulged. In this inventory model one can control the logistics themselves and the deliveries can be done in very short span of time, the good reach to consumer in fresh condition. “This makes us to invest 45 – 50 lakhs in inventories and logistics. All 5000 items in 20 categories are maintained, in case of distributor does not have stock or closed for the day, the consumer still remains dependant on us and hence we have adopted to the inventory model in our business in which we have warehouse stuffed with huge inventory” Tejpal pointed out facts. Urban Ration is a full-fledged online grocery shop where people buy from small quantum of daily requirements to as much as the monthly shopping of 12000 to 15000 online. The Urban Ration supplies the entire range of day to day requirement within span of 4 hours time. The customer is free to book the order online anytime 24 X 7. “The customer who places the order at 1 or 3 o'clock at night will get his goods delivered on the time he chose of delivery immediately after the warehouse in opened in the morning” explained Tejpal. “It save the time as huge range of products range is in our control as we stock them” he added. Tejpal feels that there is a need of

consumer education to run the business like this and this made them do lots of advertisement and publicity initially through all the available medium like newspapers, TV, Radio and Magazines, the primary objective was to change the mindset of the consumer to save the time and money. “Imagine you carrying heavy load of 20 litre of Biselari bottle with you on the top floor by yourself and the same being delivered to your doorstep by delivery boys for the same amount, which will be better for you?” Tejpal Asked. “It saves efforts, saves money and saves your valuable time, why would you drive 3 miles to buy Potato and onions when we have our delivery boys get the same delivered at your doorsteps” he added. According to Tajpal the consumer education is very expensive affair. Second problem is faced by this business was the recruiting and retaining the manpower. “We are in service industry and we look for customer satisfaction and hence we needed to train the manpower. From inventory purchase to packaging and delivery of goods depends on the quality and trained manpower. “We have three sets of trained people, first is the technical manpower, who uploads the products online and keep updating the prices and inventory, second is the voice call center staff which was also available easily in Goa, the only problem we faced was delivery boys to match our standards as we are not the ordinary grocery store who just goes and dumps the goods at customers place

TREND SETTERS but our delivery staff would checks the good while delivering and tenders the exact change to the customer” Tejpal explained in great details. When we asked Tejpal if his business is making huge profits he said that “We are still making the loses but the positive side is we are getting the new customers every month, business like us do not look for profit in short term, it takes time for the customer satisfaction and customer testimonials tells the success story, now we have reached that stage where we have many customer testimonials from the people who are our daily customers. We have put on our website if anybody not happy with the goods we supply please do return it back and their money will be refund their money or free replacement is sent without any questions asked. According to Tejpal the supermarkets are not competition to them or vis-aversa, he said that “our business model is the future oriented and we are looking for growing this concept to other bigger cities after the complete coverage of Goa” according to him the Goa is the pilot project for his business model which will be soon looking for the expansion into major cities of India. The Urban Ration is indeed the good business concept which Goa is

witnessing for past two years and people of Goa also have embraced it positively, it may not be the big success as flipkart or snapdeal but it is surely a trend setter business concept in the Goa and it will surely achieve greater heights in near future with the help of complete dedication of its visionary Tejpal and consumer support from Goa.

Goa Government withdraws the entry tax on Goan Vehicles The decision of Goa government to cut down the entry tax on Goan commercial vehicles has brought lots of relief to the commercial vehicle owners from Goa. The entry tax was according to the vehicle owners was eating into their profit margin which was indirectly affecting the hike in the price of the commodities and service. To avoid this Goa government on Tuesday has decided to scrap the entry tax on Goan commercial vehicles which was imposed on June 1 followed by a major public chaos. According to the information given by PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavalikar the chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar had decided to cut down the entry tax levied on the Goan commercial vehicles and the official notification for the same will follow shortly. According to Sudin the government had a need of funds after the closure of mining business in Goa to maintain the Goa's infrastructure work such as Roads and small bridges to go on. The entry tax was suppose to help build the corpus of between 400 to 500 crores which would in turn help making all the infrastructure work carried smoothly but following the public rage the government had to withdraw the decision. If you look at the scenario it's not the mistake of government at all, the decision of imposing the entry tax is the need of the day looking at the amount of infrastructure development going on in the state. If people start agitating on every tax levied on them by the government then how the development of the state will take place? What do you think about all these? Please do leave your opinion, comments and suggestion on the above issue.

Casinos to be pushed out of Mandovi River by December Casinos in Goa are considered to be a milking cow for the Goa government post closure of mining business in Goa, but somehow it has always been a issue of controversy for the ruling government who is been playing the blame game with the opposition parties maintaining the status quo while putting the blame entirely on the previous government. There are incidences when existing BJP government had promised the people of Goa that they are going to remove the casinos from Mandovi River and they will also not issue any further Casino licenses in Goa. Perhaps to uphold the promises of BJP government in Goa finally Mr. Parulekar, the tourism minister of Goa, who also handles the additional portfolio of minister of captains of ports, has taken a step to remove the casinos from Mandovi finally. “The government is considering relocating all four offshore casino vessels to Aguada Bay”. Said the minister Dilip Parulekar on Friday mentioning that, casino operators would be asked to relocate their vessels at the time of renewal of their licenses. Mr. Parulekar has ruled out the possibility of shifting the vessels in river Sal, in south Goa. “Government is seriously considering relocating all the four offshore casinos to Aguada Bay. It is the safest location for these vessels,” the minister said. As per the government decision all the casinos needs to be shifted out of the river Mandovi by or before December 2015 and the captain of ports has already identified the new locations for the relocation of the casinos which includes Aguada Bay, River Sal, Chapora River and Zuari River. The minister is not in favour of relocating the casinos in river Sal as that river is not feasible for the relocation according of casinos to him “I inspected the river. Nearly 15 kms stretch was inspected. I observed that the river is not feasible for relocation of casinos,” he said. Parulekar narrated that the licenses of all the casinos expires between August and December 2015 and they will be applying for the renewal “At the time of renewal, we will ask them to relocate their vessels pending which no renewals will be done. I am confident that casino operators would be ready to shift at Aguada bay,” he said. As per available information, the license of the casino Deltiin Jaqk expires on August 29, 2015 followed by Casino M V Pride of Goa on September 12, 2015, Deltiin Royale in October and Casino Pride II on December 3, 2015. As per the previous contract the casinos were granted the licenses for 5 years with an undertaking to shift the same out of Mandovi river within the period of 2 years signing and in case government do not manage to arrange the alternative land for the casinos before September, the vessels would be allowed to anchored in the Mandovi but no operation would be allowed. As of now it seems like the needful will be done by the government to cool down the agitation against the casinos by shifting them out of the Mandovi River but only time will tell what really happens in the future as casinos are not very comfortable going out of the Mandovi as it may result into losing lots of walk in business. Also they prefer to be close to the capital city due to lots of visibility. Please do leave your valuable comments and feedback on this issue if you feel it's worth doing.

E-Auctioned ore is lying at the Jetties, No fresh extraction until October 2015 Goa's mining industry is waiting for the raise of complete ban and beginning of the full fledged mining operations. Here the honorable Chief Minister of Goa is saying that no fresh extraction will begin until the material which is e-auctioned get lifted from the respective jetties. Mining being the backbone of the Goan economy pressure will keep mounting until it resumes back normally. Parsekar made it clear on the floor of the house that the state government is working towards ensuring that all the e-auctioned ore is moved out of the jetties where it is currently piled up. "Till date there have been six e-auctions conducted by the mines department through which 6.3 million tonnes of the ore is auctioned," he told the House. "Of the total auctioned ore, 5.6 million has been sold out grossing revenue of Rs 706 crore to the state coffers. Almost half of the ore which has been sold is still lying at the jetties," he added. The Chief Minister was responding to the question raised by the BJP legislator Subhash Faldesai who raised doubts over resumption of mining activity due to existing ore on the jetties. "How will we be able to export more ore when jetties are flooded with the ore?," he said. Parsekar said government has been pursuing with the agencies to transport the ore from jetties. "Because of our constant follow up this ore will be moved...All the ore would be sold. I reiterate that by October this year the mining will resume," he added. The mining industry which is the major revenue generating business in the state had come to standstill after the Supreme Court ban. The ban was lifted last year allowing the state to grant fresh mining leases.

The government has the target of 1 crore consumers and Goa is having the best track record in this being the smallest state in India. Presently Goa has around 5.5 lakh gas connections out of which 4 lakh are the active users and 1.5 lakh connections are blocked due to various reasons either for being dormant or due to multiple connections. HPCL has the largest market share in Goa for domestic LPG supplies while BPCL standing second in the row and IOC is being the last. Neslte India's Maggi noodles is Safe says FDA authority in Goa In the recent past after the havoc created by the UP based FDA inspector when he claimed to found out that the lead content in the Maggi is much high than that of the permissible limits. That resulted in nationwide recall of Maggi noodles which authorities in India claimed to be unsafe & hazardous for the human consumption. But the FDA authorities in Goa have different opinion on this, according to them the Maggi noodles is safe for the consumption and it comply with food safety standards. The lab test done by the UP based FDA inspector drawn Nestle into its worst ever crisis in India which resulted into the nationwide recall of Maggi noodles which labeled as unsafe for the consumption due to high lead content beyond the permissible level. The Swiss food and beverage maker challenged the findings in court, which last week asked for a retest of the samples. On Wednesday, the Food and Drugs Administration of Goa said it had sent Maggi samples to a local government-approved laboratory for testing in June following the recall. "This is a total report and the lab testing shows that Maggi samples are in compliance with the food safety standards as per the Food Safety and Standards Rules," Goa FDA director Salim Veljee said by phone. "Lead is below permissible limits." According to the available report Nestle India had reported second-quarter loss after the drop in sales following the recall. Nestle India Ltd did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. Its shares were up 5.8 percent in morning trade versus a 0.8 percent rise in the broader market. "Nestle India is making all efforts and will continue to engage with authorities to bring Maggi Noodles back on the shelves," Managing Director Suresh Narayanan said last week.

TV MOVIE GOA

Credits: TOI, Naguesh Rao Sardesai, Art Critics, the article has been restructured and edited by Rajesh Ghadge.

What is stopping Konkani films from making it big like Bollywood League? This column of TV MOVIE GOA has been started to keep our readers updated with the latest happenings, gossips and developments in Goa television and Movie industry of Goa and from our forthcoming issue we will try to bring you some exciting stuff from “Gollywood” that is what Goa Film Industry being addressed now a days by the film makers and enthusiasts. The entertainment industry in Goa is age old with the existence of traditional Tiatr entertaining the majority of population of Goa but with the due course of time Tiatr started losing its charm for various reasons one of the main reason was the audience. The film industry did not take its root in Goa but there were few films made in Konkani language in 70's, the film such as Bhuyarantlo Munees could be one such example but that did not give rise to any production houses in Goa then. The film production started in Goa somewhere in year 2004 when first IFFI came into Goa and film enthusiasts in Goa realized the need of it then. But still the industry did not grew much or may be it just started taking shape. According to one art critics Naguesh Rao Sardesai the most important reason why industry did not grew in Goa could be the ratio of Konkani speaking population in India according to him 41% of countries population speak Hindi but hardly 0.24% speaks Konkani this was the main hurdle to the popularity related to the viewership of Konkani movies across India. Despite some good cinema in Konkani in the recent years, the viewership has been limited and so is the coverage given to it by the local media. As a result, the investment for a local film is not viable, leaving the films wanting in quality and technical aspects. Low investment gives poor quality films which draw less crowds and the cycle continues. According to Minaxi Martins who is an actress from Salvador do Mundo “Market for Bollywood films is big and so their budget is also big. As their audience is big, they are sure of recovering the amount spent on the movie and making huge profits. Konkani cinema has a small audience in Goa. Small amounts are spent on Konkani films, as the money spent

36

cannot be recovered. So our films are not as good as Bollywood films and people are not willing to watch them. In such a scenario, government must give subsidies to Konkani film producers. For last 4 years subsidy has been stopped by government further affecting Konkani films production. Other states are helping their film industry. Goa government must treat film making as an industry and give subsidies to compete with Bollywood. Once quality of Konkani films improves, audience will increase.” Mahesh Rane, a film maker from Mapusa says “Although the first If fi gave a boost to Konkani films, only 1 or 2 Konkani films were produced every year. To compete with Bollywood we have to produce at least 5-6 films per year having high quality. Also, although there is money available to produce good films, people must come and see the films. So to give a boost to Konkani films, and raise them to Bollywood level, people must be encouraged to watch Konkani films. People must encourage film producers by watching films in theatres. Rajendra Talak, a notable producer and director in Goa's film industry do not have much different opinion on this issue, according to him “There are several factors which hamper Konkani films from making it to the big league alongside Bollywood movies. First and foremost, there is limited level of technical knowhow and Goan films need to deal with universal themes. Besides this, Konkani as a language has comparatively limited patrons. Above all, Goans are not pushy and do not indulge in or resort to aggressive marketing tactics.” Now this makes clear that the Goa has all the resources and talent but it does not have market, many a times our own population do not go out to see regional language movies due to the assumption that quality may be poor. The question here is how this scenario will change? What will make Goa's film industry grow and who are going to be the future stakeholders of this industry? We will come to you more with on this in our next issue. Keep watching for this column in coming issues of Incredible Goa.

DIVINE GOA

The Divine City and the Preserved Heritage of Old Goa

40

SEPTEMBER 2015

Old Goa is not just a world heritage site but it is a compilation of rich history of holy place in Goa. This place can also be addressed as the divine “City of Churches the reason behind this is the maximum number of churches in Goa is situated here in just 1KM radius. The most prominent amongst them is the Basilica of Bom Jesus where the relic of St. Francis Xavier (also known as Goencho Saib) has been preserved for more than 400 years. You may wonder as what is so special about this place? Is it just because of the churches this city is famous? Or there is something else which makes this city prominent in Goa? This article will take you through the divinity and history of this place and at the end of this you will have all your unanswered questions rejoined. In Present days, Panaji is the capital city of Goa, but in the Portuguese reign Old Goa was the capital city of Goa. It has been revealed in the history of Goa. Old Goa or Velha Goa (Velha means "old" in Portuguese) is a historical city situated in North Goa district in the Indian state of Goa. The city was constructed by the Bijapur Sultanate in the 15th century, and served as capital of Portuguese India from the 16th century until its abandonment in the 18th century due to a plague. It is said to have once been a city of nearly 200,000 domiciles, before the plague destroyed this place. The Portuguese used this as their business hub and they traded across continents. At present the remains of the city are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was founded in the 15th century to replace Govapuri, which lay a few kilometers to the south and had been used as a port by the Kalama and Vijayanagar kings. Old Goa was the second capital after Bijapur of the rule of Adil Shahi Dynasty. It was surrounded by a moat and contained the Shah's palace, and his mosques and temples. The city was captured by the Portuguese, and was under Portuguese rule from 1510 as the administrative seat of Portuguese India. The Viceroy's residence was transferred in 1759 to the future capital, Panaji (then Pangim), at the time a village about 9 kilometers to its west.

DIVINE GOA

During the mid-16th century, the Portuguese colony of Goa, especially Velha Goa, was the center of Christianization in the East. The city was evangelized by all religious orders, since all of them had their headquarters there. The population was roughly 200,000 by 1543. The outbreak of Malaria and cholera epidemics ravaged the city in the 17th century and it was largely abandoned; only having a remaining population of 1,500 in 1775. It was then that the viceroy moved to Panjim. It continued to be the de jure capital of Goa until 1843, when the capital was then shifted to Panjim. The abandoned city came to be known as "Velha Goa" in Portuguese, 'Old Goa', to distinguish it from the new capital Nova Goa (Panjim) and probably also Goa Velha, which was the Portuguese name for the town located on the old site of Govapuri. Velha Goa was incorporated into the Republic of India in 1961, together with the rest of Goa. The picture of 1760 was very horrible in the history of Goa, imagine living in the most glorious city in all of the Asia which was also known as Rome of East then, filled with ornate cathedrals soaring at heights unimaginable to most people on the subcontinent. Then one day suddenly a disaster strike, all the people around you falls sick, eyes bleeding, mouth foaming. Your neighbors die in their dozens, and then you're parents, your cousins, your friends. You rush to the cathedral to beg

God for help, but the deaths continue. The smell of decay hangs heavy in the hot, breathless air, and it's an all-toofamiliar scene. It all really happened here hundreds of year ago. But this time, you decide it's worse. Scrabbling together what you can carry of your belongings, you scoop up your children, praying it's not already too late, and flee the glorious city of dreaming spires. You cast a final glance back as the towers and turrets recede into the distance, and put your mind to the future, and onwards Panaji. Life in Old Goa, the principal city of the Portuguese eastern empire from 1510 until its abandonment in 1835, was anything but dull. Its rise was meteoric. Over the course of the century following the arrival of the Portuguese in Goa, the city became famous throughout the world. One Dutch visitor compared it with Amsterdam for the volume of its trade and wealth. This place across the Mandovi river just 9KM away from present capital city of Goa remains with only handful of imposing churches and convents which was once so grand and so powerful it rivaled Lisbon. Afonso Albuquerque - the founder of Goa - built the first church here, that of Our Lady of the Rosary. He also built the Se Cathedral, the largest church in Asia, which took 80 years to complete. The construction of Churches continued at a fast pace and eventually there were some 12 huge and magnificent churches and monuments

roughly in an area of one square kilometer in Old Goa. The city had as many as seven markets where traders came from China, Arabia, Zanzibar and other Indian states to trade in silk, cotton, spices and perfumed oils, etc. There were markets for blacksmiths, goldsmiths, fish and meats, and one for diamonds. Rua Direita ("the Right Path") the main avenue which lead from the wharf, under the Viceroy's Arch and passed through the centre of the city, was lined with shops and palatial villas of the rich.

The name Old Goa was first used in the 1960s in the address of the Konkani monthly magazine, dedicated to spread the devotion of the Sacred Heart, Dor Mhoineachi Rotti which was shifted to the Basilica of Bom Jesus in 1964. Postal letters were returned to the sender, as the name "Old Goa" was unknown then, according to then and long-time editor of the monthly, the great Goan historian late Padre Moreno de Souza, SJ. Old Goa contains churches affiliated to various congregations, including the Se Cathedral (the seat of the Archbishop of Goa), the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Church of S. Caetano, and notably, the Basilica of Bom Jesus which contains the relics of Saint Francis Xavier, which is celebrated every year on 3 December with novenas beginning on 24 November. Then the Mandovi River started to silt up, making it difficult for the ships to berth at the once-bustling port. Soon, in

1759, under the orders of the viceroy, Conde do Alvor, the city was shifted to Panaji. Most of the buildings except the churches were pulled down and the rubble used to build the new capital. Today, Old Goa is a World Heritage site. There is a small village around the huge churches and convents. Some of these are still in active use, and others have become museums maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The city no longer bustles with crowds and trading people, but with a little imagination, you can picture the thriving city that used to be at the site. Early morning and late evening (till 5.30) are the best times to visit the site.

ETHNIC GOA

Thanda, thanda, Cool, Cool I love Goa's tropical weather MOSTLY…except for March, April, May- the sun is unrelenting, the air unobliging & the heat oppressive. And as the monsoon approaches- a strange humid pressure begins to form, there's no escaping it. At times I describe it as the weather itself experiencing nausealike it's ready to throw up but can't, like it's just waiting to feel better but can't. For a lot of people it's a natural call to move to a better climate like a hill station or just take off for a long vacaybut then what about the simple folk who don't have the luxury to 'up n go'! Your best bet? Dress Better. Consider your wardrobe as combat gear for the season and during these months it's all the more crucial. So here are some failsafe pointers that will keep you cool and trendy.

OPT. 1

OPT. 2

White isn't always right- For a lot of people a basic rule of thumb is to wear white- it's cool, soothing and absorbs least heat- But personally I'm not a fan. I believe for Indian skin tones- Ivory, pale yellow, Lime & lemony shades deliver better results as they bring a splash of freshness. Sometimes I find sparkling white too blinding in sun. At the same time just because it's hot out there doesn't mean that you need to eliminate ALL color, bring in a bit of darks as a contrast- like a tan belt, a maroon brooch, Khaki bottoms- you get

Fabric matters- More than the color- it's the fabric that holds the key to keeping cool. So as long as you stick to crisp 100% cotton, linen, exquisite pure chiffon and georgette- you are sorted. This is the perfect time to wear cotton palazzos, Lucknowi chikankari kurtas, daintily printed saris & girlie sundresses. Pack away your polyesters dresses, synthetic tights & those 5% lycra jeans for a better day.

OPT. 3 Work the Hippe Deluxe look- fashionistas in goa are blessed to have a fabulous line up street shopping & ea markets. There's one near you wherever u stay. If you are in North then apart from the Wednesday anjuna market and the Saturday night market, there are ea markets at Baga, calngute beach roads that are open through the year. If you are in southhit the road leading upto Colva beach or even cavelossim- and you would get these shops with super bohemian clothing and great accessories too. The ONLY rule is to not carried away and dress from head to toe in your shopping haul from these street bazaars. Then you run the risk of looking like a tourist. Try to match a cool top that you bought with a good branded bottom, a handkerchief kimono with a pair of good shorts and branded foot wear. Mix cheap and expensive, not cheap and cheap- that's a disaster.

OPT. 4 Dungarees are back- Across all major fashion runways, fashion houses and high street labels- designers are working overtime to give these humble overalls a great new revamp. Forget those ill fitting denim dungarees that you remember from the childhood- the new ones are coming in all colors & patters from polka dots, florals, pop art and stripes too. And the best part, fashioned from pure fabrics like tartan, gingham, high deneer 100% cotton they fit super sexily. You can pick from full length, calf length or shorts- it's all out there.

OPT. 5 Perk it up- this is the best time of the year to rock accessories. Keep the clothing simple and let your silk scarf, giant sunglasses or even an offbeat umbrella be the prop to dial up your look. Think less in terms of jewellery as metal may irritate skin due to sweating. Give you're your other embellishments a chance like a tribal bag, a freaking awesome sunhat or some wooden kadas.

Just remember- you don't need to dress Up, sometimes it's all about dressing down- in style! Chill..... Ruchika Davar

Do you have Property in Goa? Be careful, Land grabbing in Goa is on Land is a goldmine in Goa. This small state has huge resources and opportunities. The land mafia is targeting this tiny beautiful state for their selfish motives, please read the report here.... Rajesh Ghadge As the prices of the properties are soaring in the state, the cases of grabbing the land and forging the documents are on rise in Goa. There are numerous properties in Goa which are under litigation due to this kind of activities. Lots of Goans are staying abroad and they have left their land and properties either in the hands of some trusted person or unattended, since they didn't had a time for these small places, but now due to slack in overseas market and booming property industry in Goa has brought them back to their motherland just to discover that, either they have lost their properties or are it is under some litigation. The recent case of Mapusa is an eye opener for the people who have left their properties un-unattended or with the mercy of some crooks. According to the news published in the local daily “Mapusa police on Friday arrested three persons in a forgery and cheating case in which property owned by a Porvorim resident was sold to a Mumbai resident by forging documents”. The story goes like this, a year ago owner of this land who is also the complainant now, received the information that someone had sold his land measuring 1400 SQMT in Socorro village by forging the documents, acting on this information he logged the complaint in Mapusa police station after collecting the information from Mapusa Subregistrar's office. He was informed by the office that his land was sold on 11th June, 2014 to one Antoinette Gomes from Malad, Mumbai and the mutation of the said land is also done accordingly.

48

SEPTEMBER 2015

The complainant then collected all documents from both departments and filed a complaint at Mapusa police station. Acting on the complaint, Mapusa police arrested Antoinette Gomes alias Firdose Sayad, 32, resident of Wadala Mumbai from his residence. During the police interrogation she revealed the names of two more accused, Tilsidas Narvekar, 38, Resident of Siolim and Abhijit Das, 46, resident of Socorro. The complaint was registered by Mapusa police in June 2014 but still it took them one year to arrest the culprits and they have been booked under sections 120, 120B, 419, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 420 of IPC, the police sources have informed that some more arrests are likely to be done in this case. The entire operation was done under the guidance of Mapusa Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar who is doing the further investigation in this case. The sources said that there is big and organized syndicate is working in this field and their main job is to grab the properties belonging to people who are staying abroad and sell them after forging their documents. The unsupervised properties are their main target in this illegal business. According to the news in local daily “Land grab in Porvorim area by forging documents

was in the news in December 2013 when Goa's first Arjuna awardee Dr Otilia Mascarenhas fell prey to the racket. Mascarehnas, an orthopaedic surgeon with super-specialty in sports medicine, practices in Germany. Her property was sold by an impersonator in the name of her deceased uncle Jose Fernandes”. According to the sources from the office of sub-registrar, under the Indian Registration Act, it is not the responsibility of the civil registrar's office to verify the owner of the property. The responsibility of the subregistrar is to see whether the party who executed the submission is the same which is for admission in the presence of the witnesses. This gives a clear message to all those who are either staying abroad or left their properties unattended, may need to take care of their properties on their own and government departments of land and revenue will not be in position to detect the forgery and stop these kinds of illegal activities. Do you find this surprising? Perhaps there are more surprises are waiting for you, cause you never know who is involved into this game at the end of the day. Please do leave your suggestions and comments on this issue and please take care of your own properties in case if you own one in Goa.

The Issue of Portuguese Nationality For Goans Born Before 1961 When I first published this article on our website, it created the huge ripples of mixed r e a c t i o n s a n d comments, and then I thought of re-print this on the print media, and here the copy. hope you like it. Rajesh Ghadge According to the prevailing law in Goa, anyone who is born in Goa before 18th December 1961, their children and grandchildren are eligible for the Portuguese passport and nationality. In some cases, children born in Portugal to non-citizens may be eligible for Portuguese citizenship. However this does not apply to children born to tourists or short-term visitors. Portuguese citizenship law is complicated by the existence of numerous former colonies and in some cases it is possible to claim Portuguese citizenship by connection with one of these jurisdictions. The most notable of these are Goa. Portugal allows dual citizenship. Hence, Portuguese citizens holding or acquiring a foreign citizenship do not lose Portuguese citizenship. Similarly, those becoming Portuguese citizens do not have to renounce their foreign citizenship and this is applicable to the Goans holding the Portuguese passport as dual citizenship. Although this issue became very controversial in Goa upon the revealing of information of several politicians, even legislators, police officers, bureaucrats, lawyers and thousands of Goans holds Portuguese passport. The 'dual citizenship' issue had become a political hot potato with two ruling legislators, Glen Ticlo and Caitu Silva, being accused of having Portuguese passports. To resolve the Portuguese citizenship

issue in Goa the central government with the panel of three-member highlevel committee B K Prasad, additional secretary, Union home ministry, on Sunday said that the “Union government is serious about resolving the issue of those Goans who have registered their births in Portugal and they will submit a report to the Union home minister on these issues.” Addressing to the media Mr. Prasad said, "We have to resolve the issue and we have to clear the confusion in the minds of Goans."

declaration stating that they have registered their births in Portugal for the better future of their children and they are Indian citizens. Many Goans, born in Goa, before December 19, 1961, register their births in Portugal and obtain Portuguese citizenship. Their children, who are born after 1961, are also eligible to register their births in Portugal and obtain citizenship or get a 'bilhete de identidade', which is said to be as good as getting a Portuguese citizenship. According to the sources many Goans use the 'bilhete de identidade' to travel across Europe as it makes the Schengen visa redundant. Many have sought employment in Europe on the basis of the bilhete. Government statistics say there are around 40,000 Goans who have registered their births in Portugal, but, do not have a Portuguese passport or bilhete de identidade.

The three-member committee, which arrived in Goa on Saturday, held a series of meetings with lawyers who are wellversed with Portuguese law, defence minister Manohar Parrikar, NRI commissioner Wilfred Mesquita and south Goa MP Narendra Savoikar on Saturday and Sunday. Sources, who were present at the meeting, said that it was suggested that the Union government should amend the Indian citizenship act so that those who have registered their births in Lisbon, Portugal, should not lose their Indian citizenship. The suggestions have been made that,

With the increase in globalization it is quite possible that the system will allow people to enjoy the dual or may be multiple citizenship, but as far as the Goa is concerned it is mandatory to allow the people and their heirs to have dual citizenship as they the law in Goa is still governed by the Portuguese law to some extent.

Goans who have registered their births in Portugal should be allowed to give a

Golf Course Resorts in Tiracol Faces Sti ffresistance from Local Residents The Golf course project in Tiracol, Pernem has c r e a t e d h u g e controversy involving the Chief Minister of Goa who is also the elected representative from that area, the report Rajesh Ghadge Any new project in Goa does not accomplishes without the stiff opposition from the local residents, take an example of Konkan Railways or floating Casinos in Goa, have faced huge resistance from Goan people, but it always ended with defeat of agitators, it is very difficult to say why people in Goa fight against any new development and why at the end of the day give the mission. There is a new agitation kicking off against the golf course resorts at Teracol. The golf course project at the Teracol is spread over the 342 acres of land which will include the golf course and allied hospitality services such as resort and spa and is expected to cover the entire village. Government is considering this project as the large revenue generation product. Government is also providing the subsidy of 25 per cent of the project cost while keeping the upper limit of maximum Rs. 50 crore. On Sunday despite of heavy rains the entire village had came on the roads to protest against the golf course project. Besides the villagers, hundreds of people associated with several NGOs from across the state poured into the tiny village of Tiracol on Sunday to voice their protest against the golf course project. This is the first time that an agitation against the golf course was supported by people outside Tiracol. Speakers at the meeting said that the golf course was earlier planned by the government in connivance with the builders in Betul and Paliem plateaus but people united and opposed the projects and were successful in doing

away with the project. “If the project comes up in the village, the forest cover, natural springs and traditional fishing activity will be permanently destroyed,” said one of the local agitators. Speakers at the meeting said that the golf courses developers Leading Hotels Pvt Ltd claimed that the land acquired for the project is barren but the environment impact assessment report prepared by the company's own consultant shows the 19,000 plants and trees in the property while indicating the 1,966 tress which will be chopped for this project. “Governance is neglecting the environmental violation and supporting plan which will destroy Goa and Goans. We are here to declare our support to the villagers of Tiracol” said Sabina Martins of Goa Bachao Andolan. The speakers at the meet also said that the company has submitted a proposal to install 17 bore wells in the property and since these well falls within the uppermost part of the property and the village is located below, villagers will face scarcity of water. “The most negative effect of the golf course project will be the effect on drinking water. Around 1,250 cubic metre of water will be required for the project per

day,” environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar said. “All Goans will come together. The golf course planned at Paliem plateau was scrapped after people cutting across all barriers opposed the project. This time also Goans will come together to save Tiracol” Kerkar said. “Tourists at the golf course will be from America and Europe. About 450L of water will be required per tourist per day. From where will the water come? The government plans to start a new water treatment plant at Tuem to feed the golf course project,” he said. Prasad Shahapurkar, legal advisor St Anthony's tenant mundkar association (SATMA) said, “Tenancy rights have been violated by Leading Hotels Pvt Ltd. The people are with us now. The movement is to save Goa. We are fighting to save land for future generations. We don't want money.” “We have to protect our ancestral land. There is a wrong understanding of development. What is happening is destruction of nature. Many years ago people fought and opposed the previous proposals of golf courses. We are with the people of Tiracol and this time too we will not allow a golf course project,” said Fr Eremito Rebello.

Vasco based lad sells fish online on Goa's first online fish store fishopper.com This is the story of 19 year old, 3rd year BBA student Rachard Pereira who is the student of MES of Arts & Commerce, Vasco. This story starts with the origination of unique business idea which stuck into the mind of this young to be entrepreneur who always dreamt of starting the online business after getting inspired from online giants like flipkart and snapdeal. “I never heard anyone selling fish online and then it stuck into my mind to carry on with this idea, I always used to follow the online giants like myntra & flipkart and I made my mind to start this venture on my 20th birthday on 4th August 2015,” Expressed Richard. According to Richard he has decided to work till the age of 60 in which he start his business at the age of 20 and work hard for 40 years and after that he wanted to take rest and enjoy his life. The reason he thought of selling fish online was due to his family business which is running for three generations “Our family is into the fishing business for three generations and we sell the fish to the fish mongers but that way customer do not get any benefits so I have decided why not to sell directly to the customer that too online and that made me start this portal.” He said. According to Richard this idea is new and unique as he never heard before anybody selling the fish online “I never heard any one selling fish online. People cut an keep fish but no one sell fresh fish online,” he tried to clarify. He is also of the opinion that his business model is different than the other existing online businesses across the country. When we tried to find out as how does he manages the deliveries of the fish to his costumers he said that “We have our boats coming at 3pm and 10pm, whatever orders are placed by 8pm are delivered by the next morning to the people, I also upload the available inventories on website, earlier delivery time was 3 hours which is now reduced to 1 hours” The orders are not only booked online but people also calls Richard to find out what fish is available and their prices, but it is not always as now a day's everyone is online and they even check the status of availability on their mobile phone before placing the order online.

52

SEPTEMBER 2015

Once they place the order portal ask them to submit their address and other delivery details, once the confirmation is done the customer receives the message of confirmation. According to Richard there is no possibility of playing the prank on this since all the messages get filtered and if it is the wrong number we get to know the status about the same immediately.” Basically, according to him the working people don't have time, if they get the best rates and home delivery that too cleaned fish then why they will not take? Richard pointed out. “I worked for almost three months on planning and marketing, today I am selling fish online and everybody from

Vasco till Zuarinagar knows that I am selling fish online. “I did Facebook advertising, printed 10000 pamphlets and distributed them into Vasco area, whats'app advertising, but what worked for me the most is the word of mouth advertising” He said. When we asked him what is his future plan of his business expansion he said “First things I am going to do is set my things in place by training my team into this business so that they able to manage things in their own, meanwhile I will also concentrate on my studies and let's see what plans the destiny has for me”

His brush with guitar occurred in 2009 when he received his first guitar as his birthday gift from his father. He started learning guitar on his own and subsequently started doing the maintenance of his guitar all by himself which served as the seed of a Guitar laundry idea which began in year 2013. The Guitar Laundry, located In Miramar, provides quality and professional services, repairs and modification to customize your guitar, or simply refurbishing it. Any business idea normally originates from the need. Aakash realized the need of maintenance of guitar was the major task that any new guitarist would face in its day to day use of this musical instrument. Guitar is one such musical instrument which needs continuous maintenance and for major chunk of the beginners it is a big challenge. Many of them discard the guitar and leave it on the loft for collecting dust. Guitar Laundry is one such place in Goa where you just need to bring your Guitar in whatever condition it may be and rest assured that the Guitar will look as good as brand new when you collect it back from this laundry. Guitar Laundry does not only restore the Guitar but it also provides the option of Custom Paint Jobs which gives your guitar a complete different look. According to Aakash “Everybody Has a Guitar They Used to Play Back in the Old day. Felicitation of “Mummy” Victoria Fernandes on her 80th Birthday with launch of “Flower of Fire” Victoria Fernandes social worker turned politician is a lady of substance celebrated her 80th birthday in alluring ceremony at Kala Academy in attendance of dignitaries from political and cultural field.
