Service solutions
Your peace-of-mind is our commitment Our service commitment is driven by our dedication to continuous improvement or kaizen – one of the core pillars of the Toyota way of doing business. This approach is demonstrated by our ongoing investment in our service infrastructure – or ‘Mobile Service Platform’ as we call it. This combines the benefits of technology with a human approach and links you to our global expertise, experience and resources every time we deliver a part or service a truck. Service Contracts Our service contracts are all designed to reduce operational risks and help provide you with a trouble-free materials handling operation. This allows you to concentrate on your core business rather than worrying about unexpected breakdowns, scheduling maintenance, ordering parts or managing service engineers.
There are three levels of Service Contract to choose from: • Safety inspection Designed to keep your trucks operating safely and provide protection for your workforce. This contract ensures that your truck always complies with safety standards set by national laws and regulating bodies. • Preventive maintenance This contract is an effective way to prevent unplanned downtime and costly repairs as we take responsibility for maintaining your trucks according to a pre-determined plan as well as ensuring that they meet all safety requirements. • Full service This contract is designed to take care of all your truck maintenance and repair requirements in order to provide you with the highest levels of operational performance and uptime.

Genuine Toyota and BT parts We build our trucks using only genuine Toyota and BT parts, so if you want to maintain the built-in quality and reliability of your truck it makes sense to maintain and repair them using exactly the same genuine parts. They will provide you with superior operation as well as preserving the value of your investment over time. They also deliver the quickest and most reliable repairs, minimising downtime and maintaining the safe operation of your trucks. Driver training A skilled and motivated driver not only offers increased productivity, but will also operate more safely – reducing the risk of damage to stock and equipment – or worse still, injuries to people. We offer a complete range of training courses outlining the basics of daily safety checks and maintenance routines, as well as covering safe driving practices and operating techniques.

Short-term Rental In today’s fast-paced business environment, flexibility is a key requirement. How do you respond quickly to changes in your operating environment or meet urgent requests from your customers? Our Short-term Rental plan can provide the answer as it gives you the flexibility to quickly adjust the size of your core fleet. Alternatively, you may simply need a truck to meet a specific need for a specific period.
1
Whatever your circumstances, we can usually help. One call will take care of all your needs and give you access to over 20,000 trucks in our Short-term Rental fleet across Europe. Whether you are an experienced logistics professional or you are new to the world of lift trucks, we will quickly and efficiently deal with your enquiry to ensure that you obtain the best solution for your requirements. Payback Rental This is a specialist rental plan where we buy your existing fleet from you, providing you with a valuable capital injection into your business. We would then take care of all the details and simply rent your trucks back to you for a fixed monthly payment – with our expertise it really can be that simple.

More than fleet management Toyota I_Site is more than fleet management. It is a unique combination of technology, information, expertise and support that helps businesses to manage their materials handling operations more effectively. Our approach is an intelligent partnership in which we work together with our customers to deliver tangible benefits while helping to optimise their operations. Who needs it? Toyota I_Site is developed to support truck fleet owners who want to focus on their core business. Therefore, Toyota I_Site offers information and on-going support to give customers tangible benefits by providing greater knowledge and control of their entire fleet. This simplifies administration and frees time to focus on other important aspects of their business.
Practical answers We understand that running a safe, efficient and cost-effective materials handling operation is no easy task. It requires constant analysis and decision-making to control a whole variety of different costs and operational factors. • What is my optimum fleet size? • How can I reduce damage costs? • Which drivers need additional training? • How do I control access to my equipment? You will constantly need answers to these and other questions as your operation changes to meet different customer demands and business goals. That’s why Toyota I_Site is not simply about supplying you with some clever system and some reports about your fleet. Instead, it is an ongoing support programme that will help you analyse this fleet information and provide you with a faster and easier decision-making process.

Toyota I_Site collects information from your truck fleet and the Toyota service database. A Toyota I_Site consultant advises you how to use this information to produce positive results in three key areas of your material handling operations. 1. Reducing operating costs Cut damage costs by making sure that trucks are only operated by properly trained and authorised drivers. 2. Improved safety Controlling access to trucks and monitoring truck impacts will also help to reduce accidents and improve safety in the workplace. 3. Increased productivity Monitoring truck utilisation provides an accurate picture of your activity and identifies under-utilised machines and bottlenecks in your operations.

Used truck solutions
Buy an Approved Used Truck from us and you buy with confidence and real peace-of-mind As part of the world’s leading manufacturer of new forklift trucks we also understand that there are many situations when buying a used truck can provide the best option for your business. It could be that you need a truck immediately but would prefer to own your truck rather than hire one on short-term rental. Or you may only need to use a truck occasionally and so a used truck can represent a good value-for-money choice. Even large fleet operators can gain value from used trucks by utilising them to supplement their core fleet and in the process build some flexibility into their operation. Our guarantee of quality stems from the fact that the only trucks we will accept on to our Approved Used Truck programme are Toyota and BT trucks that have been fully maintained by us from new using only genuine Toyota and BT parts. This means that we have maintained the built-in quality of these trucks during the whole of their operational life rather than trying to certify their quality by carrying out a list of one-off checks. You can be sure of an Approved used truck’s quality without having to worry about a complicated classification system that grades trucks according to different levels of quality – with us; ‘Approved’ says it all in one single word. It also means that every Approved used truck will undergo an individual preparation programme based on our intimate knowledge of the truck. We believe that this not only guarantees the quality, safety and performance of our Approved used trucks but also helps to provide you with value-for-money pricing.

Special Products
The need to adapt Forklift trucks have been the established method for moving and storing goods for decades, and while the basic concept of a unit load conveyed by two forks has largely remained constant, the types of truck employed have evolved in the quest for improved use of space and maximum productivity at the lowest cost. As a result, the industry has developed a wide range of products to suit differing needs, whether it’s loading/unloading, transportation, movement of goods in manufacturing, order picking or straightforward storage. Toyota Material Handling Europe has a long history of working closely with customers to adapt trucks to match precise requirements. Dedicated facilities within their production units are able to interpret customer needs and design optimal solutions. There are generally four main reasons that drive the need to adapt: Adapting to the working environment There are obvious examples where the working environment will demand change to a standard truck. Food manufacturing requires the highest standards of hygiene, and trucks can be built of stainless steel, allowing regular pressure washing and resisting corrosion. In contrast, milling environments demand adaptation to protect equipment against the ingress of dust. Adapting to the load In some operations adaptation can be required to deal with the type of load being handled. Less stable consignments may require additional support to ensure safe and efficient handling. This could involve specially designed stability aids, with for example overhead support to steady the load from above, or a lateral tilt facility to ‘nest’ the load. A frequent example of this is high-stacked roll cages of products such as dairy cartons, which demand high and fast throughput without risk of spillage. In some cases the load may not be palletised at all, instead using side clamps, which can be an effective way of lifting large unit loads such as domestic appliances.
12

26/4/11 14:14:14
Services and solutions
Adapting to the process While material handling equipment is principally employed in storage and distribution industry, there are also requirements in situations where straightforward lifting and lowering of a load is insufficient. In manufacturing, fork lift trucks can be adapted to fulfil a variety of tasks. The process may require a tool, component or raw material to be fed or loaded in a way that could involve rotation, inversion or other manipulation. This type of adaptation is also within the scope of TMHE’s special product development units.
1
Streamlining the process Improvements in logistics may in some cases be calculated in fractions of cents, but the consequential commercial impact measured in multi-digit units of currency. A slight adjustment to the way something is handled may only appear to gain a few seconds, but when that process is repeated many times per hour, per shift, per week and per year the time savings can be impressive, impacting on both manpower and equipment costs. This is the other reason why progressive companies often choose to adapt trucks to precisely suit the needs of their operations. For example, an adapted workspace within the cab of a truck can streamline a process, ensuring that the tools and equipment required to support the flow of an operation are in the right place at the right time.

Our commitment to the environment
TMHE believes that environmental responsibility is a cornerstone of good business practice. In line with the Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) Environmental Action Plan we design-in environmental improvements to our equipment and processes to limit environmental impact throughout the four product life cycle stages: development, manufacturing, operation and recycling. Technologies currently being evaluated are designed to maintain the excellent productivity and performance of our products. TMHE’s production centres in Ancenis (France), Bologna (Italy) and MjÜlby (Sweden) are all ISO 14001 certified. With its emphasis on eliminating waste, the Toyota Production System (TPS) helps to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing activities. CO2 emissions, water consumption, waste-water generation and landfill quantities have all been reduced, while recycling levels for packaging, water and scrap have been raised. Hazardous substances and air pollutants have also been reduced.

Our commitment to the environment
1 In addition to an extensive range of emissions-free electric warehouse equipment and counterbalanced forklifts, TMHE uses catalytic mufflers and diesel particulate filters for its engine-powered trucks. All engine powered forklifts and towing tractors comply with the new European Directive 97/68/EC emission stage IIIa exhaust emission standards. Moving towards the creation of a recyling-oriented society, Toyota Material Handling is continuously raising the recyclable level of its products at end of life. The Toyota Tonero counterbalanced forklift is 99% recyclable, while recyclability levels of reach trucks and hand pallet trucks exceed 90%.

The Toyota Production System and what it means for your business
The Toyota Production System is an expression of The Toyota Way. It empowers team members to optimise quality by constantly improving processes and eliminating unnecessary waste in natural, human and corporate resources. TPS influences every aspect of Toyota’s organisation and includes a common set of values, knowledge and procedures. It entrusts employees with well-defined responsibilities in each production step and encourages every team member to strive for overall improvement. Just-in-time – smooth, continuous, optimised workflows The Toyota Production System fulfils customer demand efficiently and promptly by linking all production activity to real marketplace demand. Just-in-time production relies on finely tuned processes in the assembly sequence using only the quantities of items required, only when they are needed. A smooth, continuous and optimised workflow, with carefully planned and measured workcycle times and on-demand movement of goods, reduces the cost of wasted time, materials and capacity. Team members can concentrate on their tasks without interruption, which leads to better quality, timely delivery, and peace-of-mind for Toyota’s customers. Jidoka – building-in quality When it comes to quality, there is no room for compromise in the Toyota Production System. The TPS principle of jidoka builds quality checks into each step of the production process. By ensuring that all processes are visible, jidoka helps ensure that abnormalities are made visible and addressed immediately. Maintaining quality throughout the production process has helped to build its reputation for quality. TPS empowers each Toyota team member to check for quality, to point out and fix any inconsistencies or defects, and to prevent inferior quality products from being passed on to the customer. And the TPS advantage does not end when the customer takes delivery. Toyota’s highquality products mean customers benefit from better productivity, less downtime and a greater return on their investment.

Toyota Production System
Kaizen – improvement is a continuous process In many organisations the process of change can be challenging. At Toyota change is a way of life, thanks to the company’s fundamental philosophy of continuous improvement known as kaizen. Kaizen means that all team members throughout the organisation are continuously looking for ways to improve operations, and people at all levels in the company support this process of improvement.
1
Kaizen is one of the foundations of the Toyota Production System – not only a process but also an attitude. Toyota’s constant striving for improvement ensures that its customers will always enjoy excellent products that use the most advanced and reliable technologies. Toyota also works with its customers to achieve improvements in its services to them, to optimise their investment in Toyota products. The environment – Toyota’s commitment Throughout its wide range of activities Toyota always considers the environment as part of its daily operations. Its policy is to analyse the effects of every stage in its products’ lives: development, manufacturing, operation, and recycling. Toyota has a policy in place to reduce CO2 emissions, use resources more efficiently, and reduce environmental risk factors. Considering the environment at all four stages of a product’s life is the responsible approach and leads to real environmental benefits for Toyota’s customers with respect to their responsibilities towards environmental issues. TPS is concerned with health and safety Safety is always the focus in all of the complementary philosophies and practices that make up TPS. Not just a priority but a necessity. The tireless effort to do things in the best possible way could never progress if safety were to be compromised by apparent efficiencies. When processes are improved to increase quality, safety is also improved. Toyota maintains health and safety for its team members so they can concentrate on their jobs delivering the best quality products and be more efficient.

BT Lifter long-life hand trucks The BT hand pallet truck range has been setting standards in strength and performance for over 60 years and today’s BT Lifter range from Toyota Material Handling Europe maintains these values. Manufactured at TMHE’s dedicated production facility in Sweden, BT Lifters are proven to be the most durable – lasting up to five times as long as other makes in work-cycle tests – meaning that BT Lifters offer by far the lowest lifetime cost. TMHE is committed to minimising the environmental impact of materials handling. BT’s approach to hand pallet truck design and manufacture reflects this commitment, both in the way it builds trucks and as a result of their long operating lives, reducing renewal rates and, therefore, the impact of truck disposal. Again leading to the lowest possible lifetime cost.

BT Vector A-series Advanced VNA BT Vector A-series is the ultimate VNA truck, offering the greatest productivity, the highest energy efficiency and the most effective use of space, setting a completely new standard when it comes to driving down costs. The BT Vector A-series’ unique articulated chassis allows it to drive between aisles using a transfer aisle up to one metre narrower than that required by a non-articulated truck, which can result in up to 60 extra pallet positions per aisle. The BT Advanced Lifting System dramatically reduces the energy required for lifting, and combines with the low overall truck weight and regenerative braking and lowering to create a machine that can comfortably perform two full working shifts on just one battery charge. This also results in an excellent power-to-weight ratio, which means that the BT Vector A-series offers the highest levels of productivity currently available from this type of machine. The combination of advanced space utilisation, productivity and energy efficiency, as well as advanced driveability and stability means that the BT Vector A-series sets a unique standard for driving down costs in high-density storage.

BT Autopilot Many companies can benefit from automation in their handling processes. BT’s unique Autopilot concept allows simple driverless operation ideal for repetitive movement of goods. Easy to install and easy to modify, BT Autopilot increases efficiency and saves money. The LAE and SAE trucks are ideal for manufacturing applications in which similar journeys are made repetitively, for example, delivery of goods between production lines and storage areas, or between conveyor systems. This frees-up expensive human resources for more demanding tasks. Multi-shift applications in particular will benefit from considerable cost savings.

Automated handling systems
BT Autopilot models are semi-automatic trucks that can also be used manually. BT Autopilot uses laser-guidance technology and creates routes using a straightforward ‘Teach-In’ program. An operator simply drives the truck through the desired transport routes. The truck memorises the route as it goes, using strategically placed reflectors to identify its position. New routes and stations can be added or changed, quickly and simply, at any time. Laser guidance and Teach-In technology offer users a simple system with flexibility, resulting in a costeffective solution to repetitive long-distance materials handling needs.

BT Autopilot in order picking systems
Order picking is labour-intensive and can represent a considerable cost in any distribution system. Building on BT Autopilot technology and integrating it with voice communication and warehouse management systems, BT Automated Order Picking (AOP) can revolutionise the process, increasing productivity by up to 40% and therefore substantially driving down costs. BT AOP uses standard trucks with added automation features and is both scalable and flexible, and able to work alongside manual processes. Cost savings mean that the concept offers a fast return on investment. The concept is simple. The people in the process are only required to transfer each item from its pick position on to the load carrier. Everything else can be automated. With BT AOP, the human picker receives instructions via a headset, as determined by the site’s warehouse management system (WMS). At the first picking position there will be a BT AOP truck waiting to receive the items – itself directed there by the site’s WMS.
AOP • Powered stacker • Max. capacity 2000 kg • Max. lift height 1.79 m • Choice of 480 Ah or 600 Ah battery • For use with Europallets or other pallets without bottom-boards • Optimised for automated order picking

26/4/11 14:25:19
Automated handling systems
As soon as the items are placed on the pallet the truck will automatically move to the next picking position, effectively escorting the operator as it does so. When the pallet or roll cage is full, a new truck will arrive to continue the order as the first travels automatically to despatch, allowing the operator to keep on picking. BT Autopilot technology takes care of navigation and safety and the picker is able to concentrate solely on fulfilling the order rather than negotiating a busy warehouse and continually stepping on and off the truck. This means a lower risk of work-related injuries, less stress for the operator, fewer picking errors and less risk of damage to goods, trucks, and infrastructure.

Only Toyota trucks with SAS know how… To drive down costs Toyota forklift trucks equipped with SAS use intelligent technologies to reduce your driver and damage costs. It all adds up to a significant reduction in your overall truck operating expenses. And because downtime is reduced and workflow is faster, your productivity increases as well. Only Toyota trucks with SAS know how to move loads safely and drive down costs. Savings you can see SAS addresses costs in two key areas: driver costs and damage costs. These areas can collectively account for more than 70% of your truck’s life cycle cost. SAS can deliver immediate savings, protecting your drivers and your bottom line. Six reasons why SAS delivers savings As the focus on workplace safety increases across Europe, SAS stands out as technology that actively reduces the risk of accidents. Unique to Toyota trucks, this patented dynamic system comprises 10 sensors, 3 actuators and a controller. SAS constantly monitors forklift operations and automatically takes corrective action when it senses factors that could lead to truck or load instability. Its six advanced functions work together to keep your driver and goods safely on the move – and your productivity on the up.
To steer clear of unnecessary truck damage Swing Lock Cylinder SAS reduces risks during turning without compromising productivity. If the truck becomes unstable during a turn, the patented Swing Lock Cylinder automatically locks the rear axle to increase the truck’s stability footprint – greatly reducing the risk of a sideways tip-over. Acting even faster than the most experienced driver, SAS provides excellent stability to help protect operators and keep trucks damage-free. Please note that Toyota counterbalanced trucks are equipped with either with SAS swing lock cylinder or SAS Speed reduction when cornering. Consult relevant product brochures for detailed specifications.

26/4/11 14:26:08
Counterbalanced trucks
Speed reduction when cornering If SAS senses the turning speed is too high, it overrides the driver’s instructions and automatically slows the truck to keep the wheels and load in the proper position. Avoiding accidents keeps your drivers safe and your equipment in excellent working condition. Please note that Toyota counterbalanced trucks are equipped with either with SAS swing lock cylinder or SAS Speed reduction when cornering. Consult relevant product brochures for detailed specifications.
To drive down goods damage Mast Front Tilt Angle Control SAS prevents both the load and truck from tipping dangerously forward. Mast Front Tilt Angle Control monitors load height and mast position. If necessary, it automatically limits the mast angle to protect the driver and load. This reduces the risk of injury and property damage, supporting lower insurance costs. Mast Rear Tilt Speed Control When loads are tilted backwards too quickly, they can put the driver, goods and the truck at risk. Mast Rear Tilt Speed Control senses possible risk factors and reduces the mast speed accordingly. The load moves surely and steadily into the right position and work carries on. Fork Levelling Control Adjusting the forks to a level horizontal position takes a little extra time – every time. With SAS Fork Levelling Control, the forks are levelled at the push of a button, making work easier for the driver, particularly when loads are at height. This saves time, which increases productivity and saves you money.
8
To drive down driver costs Active Steering Synchroniser Eliminating hydraulic steering slippage helps operators work safely and more efficiently. The SAS Active Steering Synchroniser does this by automatically aligning the steering wheel with the rear wheels. Your drivers work ergonomically and always know which direction the truck will move for safe, productive operation.
