FALL

SPORTS

preview

There are great things done in the waning sun By those playing for the glory; When summer’s heat starts to deplete It’s time for fall to tell its story; Of penalty kicks, tackles and licks That all will come to see; The players will shine, the fans will dine, And we’ll all enjoy victory. While leaves are turning, players are yearning To make their hometowns proud; Golfers with aces, or softballs and bases It all pumps up the crowd; Volleycats will spike while quarterbacks hike, And chills we all will feel; So whatever your ball, good luck this fall From the Independent Appeal.

2012 Adamsville Cardinals Football

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

Coming off a run to the semifinals in the 2A State Playoffs last year, the Adamsville Cardinals enter the 2012 season as the favorite to win District 15-A. Repeating as district champions will be a tough thing for the Cards to do in 2012 because of the 19 seniors they lost to graduation, but with 19 seniors on the roster this year, it appears they are reloaded and ready for the challenge. “They have a chance to win more games than any class at Adamsville High School,” Cardinal head coach Brandon Gray said of this year’s crop of seniors. “They’ve won 27 games so far in their career.” With Adamsville posed to make another deep playoff run, the Class of 2013’s football players have a great opportunity to leave their mark firmly engraved on the walls of AHS. To get their, they will need to overcome the adversity of having a bullseye strapped on their backs throughout the duration of the 2012 season. Teams like Trinity Christian, Riverside, Hardin County, and McNairy Central are all looking for payback after being left in the wake of the Red Rage’s prolific 2011 campaign. Offensively, the Cardinals will rely on a solid stable of running backs that includes last year’s 1,000-yard rusher, junior

Zak Neary, along with senior Hayden Reece. The receiving core will look a lot different, but Ross and Lane Burcham, Jacob Terry, and Jonah Lusk have great size and ability and should be able to fill the holes left by Jalen Kendall and Josh Shoate. Quarterback Dalton Plunk comes into the season with another year of experience under his belt, and backing him up will be the athletic John Reed Odom, who is a threat at any position on the field. “We’ve got a lot of good guys, but we’re just trying to put our athletes out there,” said Gray. “We’ve just gotta find that mix, and it might take a few games to find the right mix, but whoever learns the plays the quickest and gets out there, those will be the ones that win the job.” On defense, linebacker Seth Killingsworth will lead the charge for AHS, but he will be accompanied by a handful of returning starters. “We’re going to try and get 11 people to the ball,” Gray said about the defensive game plan. “We practice that everyday. Every play we try to get 11 guys, no matter where the ball’s at, all 11 guys need to get down there and touch it.” “No matter what the outcome of the games may be, I know our kids are going to play hard and give all they’ve got on Friday nights,” said Gray. 2012 McNairy Central Bobcats Football

By Brian Azevedo Sports Writer

The McNairy Central Bobcats start a new season with a new head coach. Coach Charlie Dampeer, a 30 year veteran of the profession, looks to bring the Bobcats out of their recent slump. Dampeer has a young group to work with this season with the team only returning a few starters on either side of the football. “We’re young...that’s the challenge,” Dampeer said. “Its not all about age. Yes, we have young players age wise, but we have young players experience wise as well. Even our guys who are older have not had much time on the field. This makes it hard.” On the bright side, Dampeer thinks the older Bobcats are coachable and great in practice. “The older players we do have, know how to practice. With their work ethic they should be showing the younger guys how to practice and how to prepare for a game,” he said. “We do not spend a lot of time trying to motivate our guys. They know what they need to do. We have to physically get better at our positions and get it done on the field.”

The Bobcats are looking ahead to stiff competition in District 14-AA. If MCHS wants to make a run at the play-offs, they are going to have to beat good teams from Lexington and Liberty, just to name a few. “We have to play well on defense,” said Dampeer. “We will figure out a way to score points, but we have to play solid defense. We have to hang around close late in games and give our offense a chance to score. We have to take it one week at a time. One practice, one game at a time. We have to focus on getting better. That has to be our main goal if we are going to be successful.” Coach Dampeer and the rest of the Bobcat staff are working just as hard as the players. Finding guys to fit in the positions that they might not have played in before is a challenge. Players have to get back to the basics. “We have to keep getting better, and as long as we get a little bit better every time we put pads on, then we are on the right track.” Results: Aug. 17 @ St. Benedict (L 34-14)

2012 Adamsville Junior Cardinals Football

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

For the first time in Cardinal head coach Michael Harvill’s tenure heading up the junior high football program at Adamsville, he will not have a single returning starter. Despite the team being in a rebuilding stage, Harvill still is not counting his team out of the running for their fifth straight county championship. “We’re not counting it out,” Harvill said. “We’ve got some potential with this team here, but because they’re so young we have to have more time to get things together.” Adamsville’s roster is loaded with seventh-graders itching to get some much needed experience on the field. The team only has nine eighthgraders, and only four of them saw playing time in the team’s 6-1 campaign last season. Harvill said that he is seeing growth in his younger players at every practice, and he knows it is only a matter of time before things start to click. “There’s no standout strength on this team that I can say, but I think defensively we’re going to have pretty good team

speed,” Harvill said about his inexperienced bunch. “They just need experience...We’ve already seen big improvements, so we’re looking for even more.” The expectations are still high for the four-time defending county champions, Harvill noted, but despite their youthfulness, the team is prepared to climb that mountain and hope for the best. Assisting them in their efforts this season will be longtime defensive coordinator, Steven Lambert, and newcomer Chad Austin, whose son is on the team. “Chad Austin is helping us this year, and he is going to be an asset for sure,” said Harvill. “He’s helping a lot with the defense and defensive backs. I’m using him some with receivers too offensively, so he’s kinda like your skills position coach, and Coach Lambert is back coaching the defense and doing a great job.” Apart from a tough county schedule, Adamsville will have four tough out-of-county opponents as well. The Cards will travel to Hardin County and Riverside, and they will host Reagan South Side and Wayne County.

The Bethel Springs Rebels lost a lot of talented players after their 7-1 finish in the 2011 season, but that is not stopping the guys from making their goal in 2012 a county championship, which would be the school’s first on the football field. “We lost a lot of eighthgraders last year, but we look to rebound and reload,” said Rebel head coach Brian Franks. “We’ve got a lot of good skills guys coming back. We return three starters; three on offense and three on defense, and the rest of the guys will be young and green. We’ll just have to see how every piece fits into the puzzle.” The Rebels plan to implement a new offense this season. They have transitioned to the Run-and-Shoot system where receivers will adjust routes on the fly, depending on the defensive coverage in front of them. Having a more proficient passing game will also take the focus off of the Rebel running backs, giving their opponents’ defensive coordinators a lot to think about.

Despite the fact that the Bethel offense will put lots of points on the board, Franks says the team’s strength is its defense and its ability to keep points off the board. “We like to build our strength around defense. Hopefully we’ll be fast and get to the football,” Franks added. While the county competition will be stiff, Bethel should have no real issues handling their two out-ofcounty games. The Rebels will travel to Reagan South Side in Henderson County and host a Pickwick Southside team that lost a lot of key players in 2011. Though the team is aiming for a county championship, Franks acknowledges the notion that the county is balanced allaround, and the championship is completely up for grabs. “It’s a toss up,” he said regarding a clear-cut favorite to bring home the title. “It’s up in the air, and it could go anybody’s way.” Will this be Bethel’s year to finally wear the county football crown? They will certainly have their work cut out for them along the way.

2012 Michie Blue Devils Football

By Brian Azevedo Sports Writer

Head coach Michael Cleary and the Michie Blue Devils are ready to take the field and improve on their 2-6 record from last year. The Blue Devils are determined to get back to championship form. “This year, the little break in the heat that we have had has been the biggest motivator so far, said Cleary. “Instead of hundred degree temperatures, it has felt more like football weather. The eighth graders have really been working hard. They are determined to have a better year and fix the mistakes of last season.” The Blue Devils will face a challenge to bring home their goal of a county championship. All teams in the county are competitive and all are looking to make a run at the title. “Every county game is huge. No one (game) is bigger than the other... We feel like Bethel, along with Ramer are the teams

to beat. Our goal is to win the county championship out right, and in order to do that we have to win all four county games. That is what we are going to try to do.” The Michie team will have the help of some experienced players as they look to accomplish this goal. “We have five or six guys coming back who started last year, but last year was some what of a rebuilding year. We were able to get a lot of young guys playing time, and that has turned into valuable experience needed for the upcoming season...The biggest thing we have going for us is that we are returning a lot of skill players. The chemistry is already there. Instead of having to work on that aspect of the game, we can focus on getting better every day.” Determined to meet their goal of a county championship, Michie looks forward to the upcoming season and keeping their title hopes alive.

2012 Ramer Eagles Football

By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

Though the Ramer Eagles were not a team to overlook in 2011, doing so in 2012 could spell disaster for any of the eight teams on their schedule. With balance on both sides of the football and 16 eighth-graders, the Eagles are primed to make a run at the county championship, but head coach Jeremy Blakely knows the team’s path will be difficult. “It’s tough. We’re a small school, but we do have a lot of returning players,” said Blakely. “I’m hoping that if we can keep it together and do what we do, we might have a shot this year.” The Eagles will have to replace a lot of talent at the skill positions, but six starters will return on offense and defense, and Ramer’s experience, especially on the offensive and defensive lines, will be the team’s backbone. “I think we have the people and the knowledge to do things that will probably help out the loss of talent,”

Blakely said. “Our offensive and defensive lines are the most experienced, and they’re what’s going to help us the most.” Outside of the county, the Eagles will have their plates full with four games. Two will be on the road against Reagan South Side and Middleton, and two will be at home against Pickwick Southside and St. Mary’s, of Jackson, Tenn. Inside the county, Blakely says games will be tougher with talent spread out all over the place. “It’s wide open because just about everybody lost a lot, and there’s only a couple schools that have anything returning,” Blakely added. “It would not surprise me if any school won the county championship this year.” The one thing, Blakely says, that can hold the Eagles back this season will be the Eagles. “If we don’t turn the ball over, if we don’t commit mental mistakes, then we should be in every game that we play this year,” he said.

2012 Selmer Loins Football

By Brian Azevedo

Selmer Lion Football Roster 2012

Sports Writer

The Selmer Lions and head coach Larry Williams are looking forward to a new season. The Lions look to improve on the 2-6 season they had a year ago. They spent the offseason working hard and are determined to succeed. “This offseason, we came together as a team,” said Williams. “We got down to the basics, we learned how to trust each other, and we learned how to hold each other accountable in a positive way.” The Lions will rely on the play of some first-time starters but have a few veterans on the team to lead the way. “These guys who were around last year really want to start something great here in Selmer. They are showing a lot of drive and are striving to fix the mistakes that they made last season,” Williams said. “We have been preaching to the guys all preseason, make every effort. If you make every effort and you make every effort to the best of your ability, you can walk to the field with your head high win or lose. This is the greatest lesson that we can teach in football.” The Lions will face a tough county schedule this season. The team will be on the road for three of their four county games. “We are looking forward to our county schedule. Every game is exciting and each team should be competitive,” Williams added.
